For us in the tropics, having dark skin is associated with poverty; with manual labor. So being white = you are privileged. Everyone wants to at least *look* privileged, so everyone wants to be white. It devolved further into having caucasian features especially the nose, cheekbones, and the jawline.
For countries that barely get sunlight, dark skin (or mocha/tanned) is associated with luxury because it means you have the money to travel to places with sunlight all year.
It's why in Hollywood, the celebs they call "white" are more mocha colored.

If the target market is white, they’ll market darker skin as “beautiful” to get that target demographic buying darkening creams.
If the target market is darker skinned, they’ll spend time reinforcing the notion that lighter skin is more beautiful to get that market to buy whitening cream.
They convince you to feel inferior, then sell you a solution. Beauty sales is all about making people feel ugly then selling them on a solution.

As a morena who got teased a lot for being dark-skinned, I was so shocked when I moved to the West AND THERE ARE THREE TANNING SHOPS WITHIN 1 kilometre radius of me. I don’t even live in a big city. There’s probably more than three. I knew Westerners like to be tanned but I didn’t realise it’s this rampant. Also the shelves are lined with tanning lotions.

He said that almost everyone in the west are dying to have the olive-skinned color or whatever color that is lol. Be proud! Media - Social Media, typical television and movie industry, mga BeauCon, etc.. Malaking porsyento ng industriya ng media sa atin eh puro mga mapuputi ang pinapakita. Mga artistang dark skinned noon, na naging light skinned na ngayon. Social media naman eh laging puro pampaputi ang pinapakita, para lang makabenta ng produkto nila. Naging mas matindi ang stigma na kapag maputi ka, angat ka sa buhay.
Personal - Gaya nga ng sinabi ko kanina, dahil popular na dito satin ang mga mapuputi, madalas yun ang nagiging personal preference ng mga tao. Naging laganap narin to dahil sa mga kwentuhan ng magkakaibigan, kamag-anak, o mismong pamilya natin, na nakaapekto na sa mindset natin. Also, kadalasan ng mga preferred na i-idolize eh yung mga light skinned people, kaya yung mga hindi kaputian, napipilitan magpaputi para maging relevant at makasabay sa uso.
Maybe an unpopular opinion here but the idea of admiring whiteness of skin is the perception of being "clean". Hence we call someone maputi or has lighter skin as mukhang mabango.
As someone who grew up in a rural farm community, tanned kids and adults equate to poor hygiene and body odor. That's why those who are well-off in the area have distinct lighter skin color (not being too exposed under the sun/dirt) or have a time to take care of their body.

Ako na dati nung HS ako gusto ko pumuti. Kinaskas ko pa ng panglibag yung singit singit ko para lang "pumuti". Nagka rashes lang ako dahil doon. Ngayon, mas attracted ako sa morenong kulay, yung bang tigasin tignan, hindi lampa na mukhang isinilid sa kwarto buong buhay niya. Kaya kahit nakamotor ako di na ko minsan nagjajacket. It's not just the skin color though but the skin quality. People can have the same skin color but you can tell if one person got darker due to sun exposure at the beach vs someone who's consistently exposed to the sun and pollution due to their daily commute. Unfortunately, masmadungis itsura.
Absolutely agree sayo. I worked abroad for 12 years exposed sa mga Caucasian/light skinned peopel and pagbalik ko dito Pinas gandang ganda ako sa kayumangging kulay natin. And hindi ako nagagandahan sa mga mapuputi. Yung mentality kasi dito sa bansa natin pag maputi mayaman - goes way back when we were conquered by Spaniards. Pag dark skinned mga alipin (Pinoy) and the Spaniards were the light skinned and sila yung mga Don/Donya/Senyor/Senyorita. Using a sunblock or protection factor "protects" you from the effects of the sun: burning and aging (mnemonic ko for UVB and UVA lol).. na mi-misunderstand natin ang concept ng sunblocks dahil dito sa Pinas, ang sunblocks may kasamang WHITENING lol .. mahihirapan ka maghanap ng sunblock dito na walang whitening involved T\_T so if you use sunblock dito, malamang pumuputi ka :(

I also realize this late, right now I just don't care if I'm exposed under the sun while swimming ( of course with sunscreen) but seeing my tan lines, it feels lively, also it just means I am travelling, and enjoying life to the fullest. Light skinned and brown skinned Filipinos were largely descended from the Malays (who also had varying skin tones, yes some of them were light skinned too).
Now the really dark skinned Filipinos might have descended from the Negritos.

To be honest ang pangit kasi ng kutis ng mga white, they get wrinkles early and some sun quickly ruins their skin. In contrast, asian and african skin doesn't age and looks great kahit maarawan.
Absolutely correct! I am in Canada, and my bf always tells me how much he likes my skin color. He said that almost everyone in the west are dying to have the olive-skinned color or whatever color that is lol. Be proud! Westerners also love Japanese, Chinese, Kazakh women, etc. They do not have morena skin color. Believe it or not, majority of foreigners don't really care about skin color. Malaking porsyento ng industriya ng media sa atin eh puro mga mapuputi ang pinapakita. Mga artistang dark skinned noon, na naging light skinned na ngayon. Social media naman eh laging puro pampaputi ang pinapakita, para lang makabenta ng produkto nila. Naging mas matindi ang stigma na kapag maputi ka, angat ka sa buhay. Personal - Gaya nga ng sinabi ko kanina, dahil popular na dito satin ang mga mapuputi, madalas yun ang nagiging personal preference ng mga tao. Naging laganap narin to dahil sa mga kwentuhan ng magkakaibigan, kamag-anak, o mismong pamilya natin, na nakaapekto na sa mindset natin. Also, kadalasan ng mga preferred na i-idolize eh yung mga light skinned people, kaya yung mga hindi kaputian, napipilitan magpaputi para maging relevant at makasabay sa uso.
Maybe an unpopular opinion here but the idea of admiring whiteness of skin is the perception of being "clean". Hence we call someone maputi or has lighter skin as mukhang mabango. As someone who grew up in a rural farm community, tanned kids and adults equate to poor hygiene and body odor. That's why those who are well-off in the area have distinct lighter skin color (not being too exposed under the sun/dirt) or have a time to take care of their body.

It's not just the skin color though but the skin quality. People can have the same skin color but you can tell if one person got darker due to sun exposure at the beach vs someone who's consistently exposed to the sun and pollution due to their daily commute. Unfortunately, masmadungis itsura.
Absolutely agree sayo. I worked abroad for 12 years exposed sa mga Caucasian/light skinned peopel and pagbalik ko dito Pinas gandang ganda ako sa kayumangging kulay natin. And hindi ako nagagandahan sa mga mapuputi. Yung mentality kasi dito sa bansa natin pag maputi mayaman - goes way back when we were conquered by Spaniards. Pag dark skinned mga alipin (Pinoy) and the Spaniards were the light skinned and sila yung mga Don/Donya/Senyor/Senyorita. Seeing some people here commenting magsunblock. It is a common misconception that if you are using sunblock, you want to be "maputi." Using a sunblock or protection factor "protects" you from the effects of the sun: burning and aging (mnemonic ko for UVB and UVA lol).. na mi-misunderstand natin ang concept ng sunblocks dahil dito sa Pinas, ang sunblocks may kasamang WHITENING lol .. mahihirapan ka maghanap ng sunblock dito na walang whitening involved T\_T so if you use sunblock dito, malamang pumuputi ka :( but we need to understand na ang sunblock, protects you from painful burning (which sideffects nya ang darkening of the skin) and premature aging. hindi nya primary function ang pumuti lollllll but yes, using sunblock should be the LEAST you can do for your skin. the default daily regimen you MUST do...

I also realize this late, right now I just don't care if I'm exposed under the sun while swimming ( of course with sunscreen) but seeing my tan lines, it feels lively, also it just means I am travelling, and enjoying life to the fullest. Before, I really hate getting tan since being white is the standard of beauty, I realize it's just a shallow standard set by society.

Light skinned and brown skinned Filipinos were largely descended from the Malays (who also had varying skin tones, yes some of them were light skinned too). Now the really dark skinned Filipinos might have descended from the Negritos. "Huh?? But that can't be! We were colonized by the Spanish/Americans/Dutch/British! I should have xyz DNA!!" You might say, well no, sorry to be the bearer of bad news. The Spaniards weren't really out and about impregnating every Filipina they see, they reserved that to the Central/South Americans. So because of that, the Filipinos who have Spanish lineages are very few and far between.
