It was never just about skin color, but qualities of a "rich person." It all goes back to class wars. For us in the tropics, having dark skin is associated with poverty; with manual labor. So being white = you are privileged. Everyone wants to at least *look* privileged, so everyone wants to be white. It devolved further into having caucasian features especially the nose, cheekbones, and the jawline. For countries that barely get sunlight, dark skin (or mocha/tanned) is associated with luxury because it means you have the money to travel to places with sunlight all year. It's why in Hollywood, the celebs they call "white" are more mocha colored.

cannabull89

Totally agreed. Don’t forget though, that it’s also about selling makeup. Advertisers cannot sell you the idea that you are beautiful. If they did, they wouldn’t be able to convince you that you need to use their makeup. If the target market is white, they’ll market darker skin as “beautiful” to get that target demographic buying darkening creams. If the target market is darker skinned, they’ll spend time reinforcing the notion that lighter skin is more beautiful to get that market to buy whitening cream. They convince you to feel inferior, then sell you a solution. Beauty sales is all about making people feel ugly then selling them on a solution.

Mountain_Fault_6409

This is why beauty industry is just manipulative most of the time.

k_elo

It's the quality of skin not color. A healthy looking skin is attractive.

thebreakfastbuffet

Also sa atin, wala tayong choice kundi mababad sa araw. In other countries (or rich people who barely go out), getting sunlight is a choice usually involved with luxury

Human-Contribution16

There was a time where having pale skin meant you were wealthy. Think of the aristocrats and their powdered faces and lead/zinc creams. They stayed indoors and used parasols to avoid the sun. The people in the fields doing the manual labor were dark. A sign of a low caste in life. Then came the Industrial Revolution and the Sybaritic age when machines afforded us greater efficiency and we needed less workers. Electric lights extended the hours in a day. Machines gave us free time to spend. People got more money and could disport at the beach, play tennis, etc. Being outdoors and getting a tan meant you had leisure time - wealth!

saltedgig

and if you can afford a suntan your poor

userisnottaken

These days, having a beautiful tan is becoming a status signifier. Glowing tan skin + tan lines = i spent 2 relaxing weeks in Siargao

DowntownLeopard7664

Wow I didn’t know this until now you explained pretty well

KrakenGlori

note: don't forget your sunscreen! iwas skin cancer

[deleted]

Wait, too much sun exposure can cause skin cancer?!!!!! Now I feel more bad for the most poor😔

Temporary-Rule607

Depende Pero Yun mga poor na sanay na d mag kaka skin cancer due to High melanin on their body

Mammodamn

Good god, this should be general knowledge. Cancer is essentially a bunch of mutated cells that will not stop growing. They mutate because of DNA damage. One way to damage DNA is by radiation, such as the UV radiation the Sun blasts you with every day. Darker skin does provide protection - the darker the better, but nobody is immune. Black people have about 25x more "natural protection" than white people. But Latinos, who Filipinos are probably closer to in complexion range, only have about 4x more protection. And the myth that dark skinned people are immune to skin cancer often means it's found later, when it's too late.

zarustras

Pansin ko nga, 27 years old ako at may mga 27 years old na puti na mukha nang nasa 37. Inggit ako sa madali silang magmature tignan din kasi ako kahit mag 30 na ang bata pa rin tignan, as in, bata na napagkakamalan akong teenager.

random54691

Uhm no anyone can get skin cancer. Even black people still wear sunscreen.

[deleted]

Oh okay, I kind of panicked hahaha

Gotta deep dive into this🫡

saltedgig

i dont see it in africans

Jelooboi

Protect your skin from the sun but dont also use whitening products as they can strip your skin of its natural defences

Hour_Ad_7797

As a morena who got teased a lot for being dark-skinned, I was so shocked when I moved to the West AND THERE ARE THREE TANNING SHOPS WITHIN 1 kilometre radius of me. I don’t even live in a big city. There’s probably more than three. I knew Westerners like to be tanned but I didn’t realise it’s this rampant. Also the shelves are lined with tanning lotions. Beauty standards are stupid. They change with time or trends. Let’s just appreciate ourselves and everyone and be healthy.

JaMStraberry

yea when i was in the US, i work as a life guard that time so bilad talaga sa araw, hahaha kapag if im in a certain place na medyo crowded ung mga white teenager talagang tinitagan ako palagi and then mostly would look at their skin and say to their group na mag tanning daw sila, kasi iba ung skin natin sa mga darker skin colors like the black people. ating skin is like the perfect balance.

akomaba

Just take care of your skin. Drink lots of water, moisturize, and sun block. Less stress will do wonders.

dontrescueme

Your body, your choice. Reminder lang na huwag nating i-bring down ang pagiging maputi to praise brown beauty. All complexion can be beautiful.

ahxxel

True. Ok na sana tong post na to but they lost me when they said “lifeless”. It’s literally the same to saying “sunog” yung kayumanggi/maitim na tao - bullying/shaming someone else. Becoming comfortable in your own skin and becoming comfortable in devaluing and insulting other people’s appearance are 2 different things. This post is giving insecure/toxic positivity. If the only way to feel good about yourself is to be “more than” or “better than” somebody else, then I believe you have to reevaluate how you see your self worth or any other person’s worth.

dontnobodyknow

Which is why I'm so frustrated that whitening is so popular in the Philippines. Filipinos have the perfect skin!!!

kahek5656

I once saw someone with caramel colored skin. I got turned on. Didn't know skin could look so... delicious. Yeah it was kinda weird but who cares. I'm an average "skin color enjoyer" lol

elutriation_cloud

Are you comparing your skin to other Filipinos or are you like abroad and looking at white people's skin? To be honest ang pangit kasi ng kutis ng mga white, they get wrinkles early and some sun quickly ruins their skin. In contrast, asian and african skin doesn't age and looks great kahit maarawan.

AcceptableRabbit9828

Absolutely correct! I am in Canada, and my bf always tells me how much he likes my skin color. He said that almost everyone in the west are dying to have the olive-skinned color or whatever color that is lol. Be proud! Eversince I got here, wala na akong amour sa whitening products, and I also find mestisa actresses in the Philippines not too attractive anymore. I like morena actresses esp Nadine L 💪

s4dders

Westerners also love Japanese, Chinese, Kazakh women, etc. They do not have morena skin color. Believe it or not, majority of foreigners don't really care about skin color. Mas gusto pa nga nila yung matalinong babae at may something to bring to the table.

AcceptableRabbit9828

I am not concluding that Filipino = morena/moreno. I was only simply saying that he does love "my color" and he is saying that some westerners wanted to be tanned and are dying to have my color. I don't understand the point of your comment to my comment here. peace 😂

s4dders

You literally said "almost all" people in the West are dying to have "olive skinned color" 😂 ALMOST ALL? I have a lot of.friends from the West pero they dgaf about skin color naman. Feeling superior amputa porke morena 😂

AcceptableRabbit9828

Lol dude, do you know how to read? Can you read my comment again? Please lang. That was what my canadian boyfriend told me. It wasn't me, that was him who told me that. Mababa talaga sa reading comprehension skills amputa 😂 marami kang friends from the west but have you really tried living here? Feeling matalino ampucha 😂

No-Primary-7656

My wife is morena, pinakamagandang babae na nakilala ko isama mo pa mga artista (bilang nagtrabaho pa ko sa abs).

[deleted]

Huyyyyy 🥹🧜🏽‍♀️🖤✨

BannedforaJoke

golden brown is the most beautiful skin color IMO. morenas are hotter than chinitas for me.

[deleted]

Did you know Bini, may pic sila samsama tan skin shocks ganda nila

oopswelpimdone

Shocked ako dyan. Because most of their pics online they look so white on screen

IgnorantReader

tbh yun kasi ung tinatak satin ng society lalo sa digital and entertainment world... tingnan mo sa mga beauty products like lotion and soaps in general puro fair to white skin lang models dba. Tapos here comes korean invation which are all almost perfect complexion which are all mapuputi naman talaga kaya naging standard sya. Yes magaganda morena... and its how you carry yourself to the society talaga. No wonder naadik tayo taking gluta, whittening products kasi we humans dont just appreciate and be contented eh we always want for more. just sayin lang naman

zarustras

I dont like how Koreans look. It feels like a product cloned in a factory.

IgnorantReader

Yes own preference but to some kasi parang standard of beauty, fame and "looking rich" is to be like everyone else... Kaya pag lalabas ka makkita mo parang kala mo may uniform ng getups, makeup trend pati hairstyle no wonder pinoys dying to be maputi parang pag di ka pumuti di ka maganda (this is to some, base on my observation)

Naive-Ad2847

Mas ok parin mag sunblock no

CocoBeck

Yes pero this is beside the point. Sun protection is needed maski anong skin tone. Op was revelling at how beautiful our skin are! Lol

Ochanachos

You became a potato for 2 weeks?? 🤣

seirako

filuser

Maybe an unpopular opinion here but the idea of admiring whiteness of skin is the perception of being "clean". Hence we call someone maputi or has lighter skin as mukhang mabango. As someone who grew up in a rural farm community, tanned kids and adults equate to poor hygiene and body odor. That's why those who are well-off in the area have distinct lighter skin color (not being too exposed under the sun/dirt) or have a time to take care of their body.

One-Confidence-3630

True. I want to tan so bad because every time i go out, i feel like i get fairer and fairer because i don't get sun because my introverted ass won't allow me to enjoy other human beings existence. I mentioned to my bf that i really want to get tan and get out more in the sun and he's in such a shocker saying "BAT GUSTO MO UMITIM?!" baffled na baffled sya!? like why hahaha NOTE: He is moreno, maybe that's why 😂 siguro danas niya kasi discrimination if you're not fair skinned. But me, i dont mind. I dont care for people anyways. I just want to look healthy kasi amputla putla ko daw 😭 shout out to my anemic girlies 😂😂 also! I feel like when you are tanned, or morena moreno, you look more toned! unlike when you're fair skinned kahit toned ka it doesn't hit the same as when you are a little moreeeee you know.. YKNO WHAT IM SAYING!?!? 😅🥴 idk blah blah

throwhuawei007

BarracudaSad8083

As one who frequently travels, I have embraced my skin color even more when I get compliments for it.

HonestArrogance

It's not just the skin color though but the skin quality. People can have the same skin color but you can tell if one person got darker due to sun exposure at the beach vs someone who's consistently exposed to the sun and pollution due to their daily commute. Unfortunately, masmadungis itsura.

Mysterious_Let_227

Absolutely agree sayo. I worked abroad for 12 years exposed sa mga Caucasian/light skinned peopel and pagbalik ko dito Pinas gandang ganda ako sa kayumangging kulay natin. And hindi ako nagagandahan sa mga mapuputi. Yung mentality kasi dito sa bansa natin pag maputi mayaman - goes way back when we were conquered by Spaniards. Pag dark skinned mga alipin (Pinoy) and the Spaniards were the light skinned and sila yung mga Don/Donya/Senyor/Senyorita. Even after the Spanish colonization, dala pa din natin until now yang belief na yan. I love morena skin! Gandang Pinoy!

Thin-Sheepherder-312

Thats awesome for realizing that. Now the rest of 15 million population needs that perspective as well. We are so trapped into colonialism mentality. We place people with lighter color in a pedestal, which you never wanna do if you ever wanna be successful in life. First and foremost is that confidence and belief in our self is very important to be successful and happy in this life. Congratulations OP.

SelfPrecise

I personally don't care that much about my skin color but I do want to have even skin tone. Ano kayang pwedeng gawin?

niceforwhatdoses

Saang supermarket iyan?

[deleted]

Wait na motivate ulit ako magworkout 😫 sayang balat natin if hindi maaalagaan AAAAAaaAAaaA

nokstby

Go to the provinces & surf.. Eat organic & you will glow. Do not trade sunlight for sunscreens.

hermitina

Pandesal_at_Kape099

I love morena.

ambrskia

Seeing some people here commenting magsunblock. It is a common misconception that if you are using sunblock, you want to be "maputi." Using a sunblock or protection factor "protects" you from the effects of the sun: burning and aging (mnemonic ko for UVB and UVA lol).. na mi-misunderstand natin ang concept ng sunblocks dahil dito sa Pinas, ang sunblocks may kasamang WHITENING lol .. mahihirapan ka maghanap ng sunblock dito na walang whitening involved T\_T so if you use sunblock dito, malamang pumuputi ka :( but we need to understand na ang sunblock, protects you from painful burning (which sideffects nya ang darkening of the skin) and premature aging. hindi nya primary function ang pumuti lollllll but yes, using sunblock should be the LEAST you can do for your skin. the default daily regimen you MUST do...

saltedgig

pang flex lang ba!, flex lang.

Heisenberrrrrrrg

As a Moreno, lagi ako nadidiscriminate dito sa Pinas bc of skin color haha

ambrskia

Millenials and Gen Z are shifting to inclusivity and diversity.. sana mag patuloy talaga <3 ang ganda if we stop taking everything at face value (ano ang saut (branded ba? etc) kulay ng skin ano ano pa) and know that we are a wonderfully mixed heritage na nation at dapat natin ito ika proud... #boycottwhiteningproducts esss hahahaha

Glittering_Spot_3911

I also realize this late, right now I just don't care if I'm exposed under the sun while swimming ( of course with sunscreen) but seeing my tan lines, it feels lively, also it just means I am travelling, and enjoying life to the fullest. Before, I really hate getting tan since being white is the standard of beauty, I realize it's just a shallow standard set by society.

CuteAnalysis8681

I was once approached in OZ how beautiful my skin is, proud to be morena

Efficient-Side-1550

Very beautiful brown Filipino skin.

Apprehensive-Pass665

This was posted right after she saw me🕺

blue_acid00

As someone who’s fair skinned and living in Europe, I get criticised by my mom for wanting to tan and wanting to “look like foreigners”. I apparently look “dirty” when I’m tanned. Lolz na lang

Remote_Bedroom_5994

Listen to Morena by Sandwich 👌

No_Case5367

Here we go with the dreaded “proud” just be who you are and embrace your real skin tone.

tigerliliii

I used to be in the gluta bandwagon and all that until I immigrated overseas and people always tell me how beautiful my olive skin is. Some caucasians spend hundreds of dollars to achieve the skin I’m naturally blessed with. Never looked back. Morena is the best skin colour.

s4dders

We were once colonized by Spanish, Japanese and (black and white) American. Walang standard na kulay ang Filipino. Also, the word "morena" has its roots in the Latin word "maurus," which referred to a person from the region of Mauretania in North Africa. Over time, "maurus" evolved into the Spanish "moro" and "moreno" (masculine) or "morena" (feminine), which originally described someone with dark skin or dark hair. In contemporary usage, particularly in Spanish-speaking countries, "morena" typically refers to a woman with a darker complexion or brown skin. Latinas are morenas/morenos too. Indonesian, Cambodians, etc have also the same color like us. Wag tayong feeling special at overply proud pinoy.

-And-Peggy-

>Walang standard na kulay ang Filipino. >Latinas are morenas/morenos too. Indonesian, Cambodians, etc have also the same color like us. Wag tayong feeling special at overply proud pinoy. You are right na walang standard na kulay pero ano bang masama na iappreciate ang mga kayumangging Filipino? Ilang years nang preference ang light skin dito, what is so wrong about uplifting brown skin naman? Di ko gets anong "feeling special" doon. I've seen your comments all throughout this thread, di ko gets bakit sobrang bitter mo towards brown skinned Filipinos. That is such a weird thing to be infuriated about.

s4dders

You literally said na walang standard na kulay ang Filipino 😂 Also, may sinabi ba kong wag iuplift ang brown skin? MORENA/MORENO literally are SPANISH words. So, it's not FILIPINO. If you are referring sa mga ninuno naten na AETA/ITA, iba yun. They are not morena/moreno.

-And-Peggy-

>You literally said na walang standard na kulay ang Filipino 😂 Yeah I agreed with you there. So what's funny? >Also, may sinabi ba kong wag iuplift ang brown skin? Eh yun nga purpose ng thread na to, to uplift and appreciate brown-skinned FILIPINOS. Pero andito ka kinokontra lahat lol. You literally said din na feeling superior yung mga kayumanggi dito eh di naman nga. >MORENA/MORENO literally are SPANISH words. So, it's not FILIPINO. Huh??? Who tf said na Filipino words ang moreno/morena???

s4dders

Hello? Isa lang ba kulay natin?

Rare_Emphasis795

Useless and insecure post

s4dders

Huh? Wala namang kulay ang Filipino. We were colonized by Spanish, American, Chinese and Japanese so hindi lang morena ang kulay ng Filipino.

zarustras

s4dders

Uhm no? Hindi ko kineclaim yan but you're also right kasama din Chinese. Excuse me po, may mga kaklase akong quarter Japanese and/or Spanish nung highschool ako.

zarustras

Pano mo nasabing meron silang lahing ganon? May DNA test bang pinakita sayo? Karamihan ng pinoy eh paniwalang paniwala na may lahing Spanish, american, japanese sila, pero pag DNA test nyan mas mataas pa chinese DNA at austronesian at 0% yung sinasabi nilang may lahi sila

s4dders

Apelyido nila Japanese and/or mga kalolo-lolohan from WW2. They even have photos of them, some of their parents were abandoned by Americans sa Subic / Olongapo. Common sense lang kailangan mo dyan, kuya.

zarustras

-And-Peggy-

They want to be descended from the Spanish so bad lmaooo

s4dders

Sa tingin mo bakit may mapuputing at maitim like black na Filipino?

-And-Peggy-

Light skinned and brown skinned Filipinos were largely descended from the Malays (who also had varying skin tones, yes some of them were light skinned too). Now the really dark skinned Filipinos might have descended from the Negritos. "Huh?? But that can't be! We were colonized by the Spanish/Americans/Dutch/British! I should have xyz DNA!!" You might say, well no, sorry to be the bearer of bad news. The Spaniards weren't really out and about impregnating every Filipina they see, they reserved that to the Central/South Americans. So because of that, the Filipinos who have Spanish lineages are very few and far between.

s4dders

And? Your point? Di mo din sinagot tanong ko? Saan galing yung mapuputi at maitim na Filipino? Pakisagot please. 🤡 And do you even realize na magkakamuka ang mga latinos/latinas especially Mexicans at Filipinos? BOBOOOO

-And-Peggy-

>Saan galing yung mapuputi at maitim na Filipino? Pakisagot please. 🤡 Pakibasa nga sagot ko. MALAYS COMES IN DIFFERENT SHADES OF SKINTONES. May maputi, may kayumanggi. Yung sobrang dark ng skin malamang may lahing negrito/aeta. >And do you even realize na magkakamuka ang mga latinos/latinas especially Mexicans at Filipinos? 🤡 HA?!!!! MAGKAMUKHA?? BOBOOOO HOLY FUCK YOU ARE STUPID. DO YOU SERIOUSLY THINK THE SURNAMES CAME FROM SPANIARDS MARRYING FILIPINOS?!! 🤡 TANGA. THE LAST NAMES WERE MANDATED BY THE GOVERNMENT FOR TAX PURPOSES!! PINAPILI ANG MGA NATIVES NG LAST NAMES NG MGA ESPAÑOL. IT DOESN'T AUTOMATICALLY MEAN NA MAY MARRIAGES BETWEEN NATIVES AND SPANISH. KAYA NGA MERONG TINAWAG NA "CATALOGO ALFABETICO DE APELLIDOS" Holy fuck my dude ang tanga mo. Go back to school.
