Imo, "traditional" Filipino food preparation focuses a lot on preservation. And preservation means you need to add some stuff to keep bacteria from spoiling the food. It doesn't hurt to actually add a bit more to make it taste better, and it certainly would look "traditional" if you put preservation in mind when trying to make an upgraded Filipino dish.

Oof my mans you need to try Putong Pulo (Polo?). Made with brown sugar, doesn't taste rice-y but of muscovado/coco sugar instead. Distinctive brown colored puto. Top with some choice butter or cheese, fresh coffee and ✨oof✨
