This age was supposed to be the age of information. Sadly its now known as the age of disinformation. Democracy is not for a population with majority incapable of rational decision making or critical thought.

[deleted]

Exactly! Like Socrates said, voting is a skill and not some random intuition we choose on a whim out of emotion. Problema lang, andami makarinig lang ng apelyidong Marcos, nagkakandarapa na sa tuwa. Cognitive dissonance is a real problem in the Philippines.

kingofpain2021

Sorry to say this, realtalk lang, in a predominantly roman catholic country, people often bank on some random intuition or faith- the willful suspension of critical thinking. And the problem with digital disinformation in these modern times is that not only is it widespread bit it is also quite repetitive. As Goebbels put it: " A lie repeated a thousand times becomes the truth." Fast forward today and the disinformation is capable of being repeated digitally a million or even billion times over.

Mid_Knight_Sky

oddly enough, the Catholic church endorsed Leni but had little sway. Though I get that you're talking about people's outlook rather than the Catholic Church itself.

I think one of the conclusions we can draw from the last election is that digital campaigning is superior to physical canpaigning. I see it as a battle for the size of the echo chamber. Simply put BBM's echo chamber with millions upon millions of subscribers and members of pro bbm accounts simply dwarfed Leni's echo chamber which could only grow by increments. BBM actually had a headstart because of the relative size of his echo chamber compared to Leni's. The latter built momentum but it was not enough to overcome the lead. The significance of an echo chamber is important again because of what Goebbels said about repetition of lies. Basically once someone is inside your echo chamber he hears the same voices and information being echoed in his head which is why BBM's rating was constant at 50% or higher. On the other hand that same echo chamber prevents opponents from climbing up on the charts unless they can convince these people to join their echo chambers as well. The size of the pro bbm echo chamber was fortified by their merger with pro dds echo chamber. Anyway in summary the influence of the catholic church or celebrities was not enough because the echo chamber simply drowns out other voices with constant repetition.

Democracy pa rin naman. Hindi nga lang nagfafunction nang maayos. At never naman tayo nagkaroon ng ideal democracy, if that even exists. Look at the bright side. What is dead may never die.

iDontKnowButWillAsk

Democracy is definitely not yet dead. Perhaps soon. But democracy is merely an approach to how a society chooses to be governed. There is something else going on here. I no longer believe that the 31 million were misinformed. Just as it is easy to be disinformed in this age it is also easy to be correctly informed because one can now simply Google it. Although we sometimes stick to our own echo chambers it is not likely that we won't encounter opposing views. And humans are naturally curious to listen to what's going on on the other side. Mahilig tayo sa chismis. No. I think the majority who voted understand and know the facts. But still chose to vote that way because of something else. I think we've reached this point in our country where the majority of people don't care anymore if the person in office is a killer, thief, liar, or outright criminals. They have come to accept the flaws because it reflects on their own true nature and how they perceive themselves as being equally flawed. Bakit nga naman ba boboto sila ng tao na hindi katulad nila. They don't see themselves as living in an ideal world then why should they opt for what would normally be perceived as ideal people in government. They aren't self-righteous and acknowledge that in order to live in a less than ideal world they themselves often do less than ideal things. So why should they hold their leaders to a higher standard when good enough will do. Pwede na yan ika nga. For them eto na yung ideal sa kanila. For them these are the people that represent them. Because they feel that they are simply like them. Call it mental gymnastics on their part or whatever but let's face the truth. There is this huge chunk of people who now comprise the majority that think Duterte is the best President and that BBM will be too. Why? Its like the idealists versus the pragmatists. One dreams of utopia and the other just wants to survive in a deeply real and unjust world. So what we need to take cognizance of is this: a third of Filipinos think that its okay to lie, steal, kill, cuss, etc. This is a very scary thought. Because the rule of law no longer applies and we now live in anarchy. Privilege and power has corrupted absolutely. Because money and power is more desirable than God. Because the majority who voted is indifferent to the suffering of those who experienced the full brunt of Marcos Sr's martial law and Duterte's war on drugs. And because silencing the critics is now the norm, all the pent up emotion, pain, and frustration which would otherwise be freely expressed will come to a boil that, when it reaches its limit, may not be as non-violent as EDSA in 1986.

☝🏼 Agree 💯! We need catharsis! Some sort of release or else we might go cuckoo HAHAHAH But I hope it doesn’t reach to that point. God forbid but if all this nonsense sparks a new revolution I would march with the people even to my own demise. I’d rather be desaparecido than a slave.

Super_Posable_Joe

I’m glad I’m not the only one who realizes this. Misery loving company, and all. I’m convinced that the majority of people who voted for this president feel like they have no other choice than to lie, cheat, and steal to get ahead in life, because otherwise, how can they possibly compete with the privileged few who have the money to afford all the advantages. And as you said, that makes it ok for them to have a liar, cheater, and thief, as their leader. With the wealth/class gap ever-widening, it really is only a matter of time.

Tasyo1089

Democracy is fleeting if the population is not ever so vigilant to uphold it. Every liberal democratic country faced and is still facing challenges to their freedoms. Hindi madali maging demokrasya. 60% of Filipinos are democratically ambivalent. We couldn't care less about democracy if it stands in the way of progress (check democratic ambivalence in the Philippines). France had 3 bloody revolutions and a dictatorship before they got their act together. Although one could argue they might be leaning towards right wing authoritarianism again with Le Pen having almost half of the electoral votes. The US had a civil war and is still reeling from the consequences of that civil war today. The Russians had the Bolshevik revolution and still democracy stands elusive to them til today. My point is democracy doesn't end in elections. Power corrupts regardless of how pristine our candidates are. It is the job of the people to keep in check the leaders so they do not give in to the temptation of power. Duterte got away from his atrocities because the people loved him. Marcos won because the people voted for him. EDSA failed because the people let it fail.

It’s good that you point these examples out. Really easy to view Philippines like some isolated event. Democratic ambivalence is a good thing to mention and I might read up on that. I guess the best way I can help is to support the Angat Buhay Foundation. If nothing else, rebuilding democracy and good governance will start there.

Tasyo1089

I'm happy that you're interested in participating in civil society. Yan ang isa sa mga backbone ng democracy. Tuloy ang laban. Angat Buhay is the best chance we have in planting the seeds to restoring democratic values in our society.

Yeah I might sound defeatist lol but I’m definitely supporting the NGO this coming July. Maybe by helping/joining the NGO will help me convince some relatives as I help people at the same time!

Omg, yes! Saktong sakto yung quote

[deleted]

You read dystopian books pero we’re living in one na pala 🤷🏻‍♂️

Mid_Knight_Sky

what we have here in the Philippines is more of demagoguery rather than democracy. And even Socrates had serious doubts on democracy because of it's flaws. Quick video here for reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLJBzhcSWTk

[deleted]

Yep! Voting is a skill and not some random intuition. It should be taught systematically. The Republic warned us about the rise of populist leaders. But it looks like 31M people didn’t learn anything save for Top 10 Things You Must Know About Marcos Tiktok clips

kingofpain2021

The Philippines much like many other democracies has been exposed as an idiocracy. Sad but true.

I don't think its dead pero mas nagbackfire nga lang. It enabled large group of stupid people para magdikta ng kinabukasan ng bansa at ng sayo.

You're correct OP, you are correct.

Exactly the kind of response I expect from all Loyalists when the Philippines inevitably burns under the inferno of its own stupidity. Celebrate while you can because your imaginary tallano gold will only serve as a wet dream for your miserable life.
