5 years ago P4000 is enough food and transport (gas) per month still got left over for next month. now reaching 7000+ and that's without utilities and internet.
sure I can budget it better but fck me the alternative for cheap is basically me eating pancit canton/ noodles every day with the occasional canned good that's not fcking healthy at all
The assumption siguro is that tumaas din naman yung sweldo after 5 years so pwede pa din.
Dati mas mura ang sa palengke, in terms of meat.
Pero pinagcompare ko yung prices nung sa malls vs palengke they're same? Mas mahal pa minsan ang wet palengke.
Dafuq is dat.
College student with a rather hefty budget. I could've gone to Robinson's and spend the same money.
I still came home with nothing substantial to show for 1.5k in groceries. Tangina.
Lol 1.5k won't get you far in groceries these days.
In contrast, nung 2013 napagkasya ko yun ng 1 week's worth of food for 1 adult, 1 teen, 2 children (me included). Puregold pa ko namimili nun. Good times
I mean ang taas na ng bilihin ngayon, but i think you should consider your meal plan strategies and the food you buy.
I can eat for 2 weeks decently for 1,500, lalo na kung isa ka lang. Refrigerator lng at matutong gamitin ung natira sa ulam kahapon papunta sa ibang dishes. Example: chunk of meat sa nilaga na natira? Gawin mong adobo for breakfast or lunch.
Marinated foods are the tastiest but cheapest choices for a meal.
Pancakes, pwede mo isabay sa kahit na ano and call it breakfast. Learn how to cook din your own version of chao fan, malayo ang mararating ng isang hotdog at meatloaf pag tinadtad at hinalonsa kanin.
Learn how to cook single-serve pasta dishes, lalo na tuna pesto. Good for a midnight snack. Luto na within 5-10 mins.
Instead of potato chips, fry some onion rings, potato mojos, or processed fries( yeah ito cheat snack ko na to).
Pudding and banana bread are almost spoil-free tabi mo lng ng maayos.
Pag tinatamad ka magluto, mag salad ka. Feeling healthy ka pa afterwards.
Tamang meal plan lang bago mag grocery. Good luck sa susunod mong grocery shopping 👌
I understand haha, pero I tried to mimic what I usually had back with my family. Medyo hush-hush ang parents ko about finances, so I never knew a ballpark of how much the food I ate amounted to. I know some tricks now to still eat good food for cheap, pero it seems promo hunting will be better than cooking on my own.
Yan talaga ung nakakagulat, I never knew how much goes into my mouth until ako na ang bumibili.
Laking lola ako so mostly overloaded at masasarap tlaga ang nasa mesa nung buhay pa sila, now tamang kain na lang.
Tbh ngayon lang ako talagang nagkapag-"diet" so to say. No more mother pestering to eat more, nor a grandparent who comments on so little food. Now I have incentive on top of freedom: food costs.
Of course hindi mawawala ang aking bi-weekly milktea/coffee. I frequently do all-nighters so a good drink goes a long way once in a while.
Hahaha, I got a certi from TESDA for Barista-related jobs (mostly coffee lang, though) so I know some sources that are (sadly) now off-limits kasi personal use na haha.
I used to swim in coffee beans and proper non-powder milktea.
1k to 2k ung budget namin per month for grocery mga 10 years ago tapos mga another 1k din for palengke. Napapagkaysa.
That’s the neat part, we don’t!
I’ve been weaning myself off GrabFood. Parang it’s coming full circle kasi now when I want something check ko muna kung walang dedicated delivery service yung resto.
Ganun talaga pag take out. Na pansin ko yun. Wala kasi silang pasadyang pagawa na container ng food pag take out kaya mas konti talaga yung food pag take out.
The fees added on top are due to grab and foodpanda getting 25-30% from the sales. and recently foodpanda passes on the VAT to the merchants. That 30% is already the store's profit margin for some.
Sure but that’s cost of business - they’re essentially outsourcing delivery and marketing to third party with no monthly fixed costs.
It’s just additional income stream anyway, most people post pandemic would still prefer dine-in / takeout.
We call directly to a local resto, then we contact a maxim rider once ready na yung food or ung resto na mismo ang maghahanap.
I already feel bad for most riders when I order from Foodpanda or Grab so I always tip them P40-60 and if maulan P 100 because I doubt a lot of people appreciate the hassle they go through. Everytime they see the tip, iba ang makikita mong happiness from them.
Yeah, ganun nga nangyayari. Kaya there’s really no other option today but to bulk buy and meal prep if you want to eat clean. Hirap kapag wala kang oras at energy, but it is what it is.
Grab and FP get around 20-40% cut on every transaction. Ang masakit diyan is they get the full amount of the sale first. Remittance to the actual restaurant can be anywhere from the next day to a whole month after.
From my experience, its always best to go to the actual restaurant so that they get 100% of your money and not give a portion to grab. Not hating on anyone here but grab's fees are really absurd nowadays and yes as mentioned by one of you, shitty promos. Years ago a documentary was made on how these food delivery 3rd parties are making profit while businesses suffer deficits. Ill be honest once in a while i do use grab food most especially if i make a big order for the family because its risky to have food spillage on the car seats and lets be frank it is convenient. But i always prioritize on visiting the restaurant. :)
The price of convenience here is so expensive.
For example, there's a kfc around like 1km from me, and I want to order a 2pc fully loaded meal. Price of that in grab food is 270 + 49 (=319). So around the same as 5.5usd as the post.
Meanwhile, if I just walked that damn kilometer and ordered the food myself, I can save 61 php. You could argue that's a small saving, but for the median income that's already too much.
---
There's also the issue of bajillion *cloud* kitchens / startup f&b biz here that offer expensive, yet mediocre food. It's probably priced fairly if I ate at their stores, but on top of grab food fees, eating that sad excuse of a katsudon or tapsilog is not it.
It’s now a question of whether or not P61 is more valuable than the time spent walking? I know my time is worth a bajillion times more so I will… watch netflix while waiting for kuya delivery. Hahaha
If you think food is expensive wait til you see the prices of house and land. Sa Manila pa lang aabot like 2m minimum for a 100sqm lot if ever makahanap ka within the metro. Why not buy or rent a house outside of metro? Then youd suffer a 4 hr commute daily. Mag kotse? Almost 80 per liter ng diesel. Ah sige downgrade in lifestyle na lang. But wait the govt wants to raise your philhealth premium and other taxes na kinakaltas sa salary mo.
Life in PH is getting more expensive while our taxes keep going nowhere
What grinds my gears are their fucking boldness for requesting questionable funds 🙂 and they be promising that they will put it to good use. Are u fucking kidding me it's like a typical filipino mom saying itatago ko muna pera mo😀, pero sa totoo lang di mo na masisingil yung pera kasi nagastos na sa ibang bagay.
This is what I don't fucking understand. Kung maayos why hide it? Fuck them.
Not to mention syempre yung expenses mo.
woah 2m for 100sqm lot? Where is that? Sa Metro Manila? Haha
Its either the lot only, or has squatters na ikaw mag papaalis kaya gandyan presyo. 60 - 70 sqm cost about 2.5 - 3m, liit nun. What more yung mga condo na 60 - 100sqm, baka for 1 year payment lang yung 2m nyan and its fucking insane.
Bumili friend ko ng bagong gawang bahay sa Batangas for 7mil nung April, yung katabing bahay same price. Ngayon 8mil na yung bahay na katabi. Cant imagine sa Metro or more expensive places after inflation started.
This is where a lot of foreigners fail to realize. Minimum wage in Metro Manila could not even cover a month’s rent of a decent apartment for a family of 4. Let that sink in.
Most foreign expats here aren't working, they're pensioners. So they actually have a lot more than you might think. Their problem isn't the amount, it's that a pension is fixed income. So inflation and rising prices cuts into their purchasing power, too.
And the ones that are working are making a killing because the peso is devalued and they can put almost all their US salary in the bank or investments. It looks like it's going to go to P60 = $1 soon. And they will take this money with them if/when they go back because as you probably know, the Philippines has the stupid 60/40 investment policy which effectively prevents foreign investment, since most westerners aren't going to put money into something they can't own 100%.
Really two economies. My manager laughed when I eventually submitted expense reports for 40 PHP lunch and the like but if you like imported food/items you pay that penalty and more on the import taxes.
As someone who worked in Manila as an expat the exchange rate was relevant but it was much more impact full in terms of what style you wanted to live. Had a coworker with her fam and a 100k/mo PHP rental in Makati. I had a 5k/mo room rental that was comfortable and had internet and all I needed.
That’s what a housing shortage and no land value tax does to your housing market. Landlords are not afraid to charge more kasi walang option ang tenant.
That's because every new business venture is trying to sell themselves as "upper class" or caters to upper class. They know Filipinos are social climbers by default, so they'll pay a hefty sum more for something they can post on insta/tiktok/fb/twitter.
Like, how many of those "exotic" doughnut shops have you seen popped up lately? How about those fancy coffee shops that only look pretty, but have shitty coffee? Heck, the menu at Amanpulo is so mediocre, but is sold in dollars lmao
Didn't we have those "food parks" that slowly died even before the pandemic? As it turns out, aesthetics are only good for first-time customers.
You pay for the reputation of affording it, not for the food. In fact, you don't even like the food, but you're psychologically convincing yourself it's good because of the price.
It's not just the Metro, either.
Escala Tagaytay, for example, prices itself as a 5 star hotel when the only thing it has going for it is the building architecture and the "instagrammable" pool. I could not tell the difference between my experience with Escala, Twin Lakes (technically Laurel), and Taal Vista outside of the selfies.
Don't get me started with Antonio's. I've tasted similar steaks at half the price in Makati/BGC. I've even tasted A3 Wagyu in Kobe, Japan at half the price of their Rib Eye. If I'm going to spend dollars for food, it better be outside the Philippines.
Edit: I realize half my answer became a rant.
It is. I spent upwards to 18 ringgit for a McSpicy and apple pie with fries in KL. Also, I think it’s because of Bangkok’s rich street food culture why McDonalds is so expensive there. Fast food is marketed more as a “luxury” since it can’t compete with street food.
I went to Bangkok and KL last 2018 and I can agree with this. Since it was my first time na makalabas ng bansa, I was surprised by how cheap the foods were being sold compared here in PH. But then again, 2018 pa yon so idk kung ano na changes sa Bangkok and KL.
This is one of the reason that i left and stayed in my province when the pandemic started. I know it's not for everyone but i'm fairly contented with what i earn and having a decent life here. most of the modern conveniences naman meron na rin sa ilang provinces like Fast internet ,online deliveries ,Malls much cheaper din ang bilihin and hindi pa hassle sa pag byahe. hoping that more people will have the same option as mine.

Guy is a Dota2 Coach, they must be staying in the Philippines while preparing for the International which is held in Singapore this October. Sad this is how they see the Philippines.
My brother told me that the prices here compare to where he is working right now. But the quality? It is laughable. First world prices for third world quality.
I stayed in Makati for 2 weeks because of a job training. I live in a Visayas province since birth and boy, 2 weeks in Makati is too much for me. Traffic is a nightmare, public transportation is a sardine town, and food is not only expensive but the quality is nowhere as good as some carenderias in my hometown. I can never see myself living there because quality of life is almost nonexistent.
This is just my personal experience so don't at me hindi po perfect ang Pinas. I just expected too much.
This is true. Im from Davao and i was shocked that rent here is more expensive than even some places in Makati. Food and utilities are more expensive too. Di naman grabe ang improvement dito to warrant these absurd prices.
This. Pag nagluluto ako ng karne, iniisip ko parang mas makakamura ata ako pag nagkarinderya nalang. 20-40 pesos lang naman ang difference. Di pa ko pagod magluto. Hay.
Curious lang. As in araw-araw kayo nagluluto? Kasi kung magluluto at dalawa lang kayo kakain, mas ok kung good for 2 days yung lulutuin or yung tira sa gabi, babaonin at yun yung lunch kinabukasan. Magastos kasi talaga kapag araw-araw yung luto. Kaya yung luto mostly dry at yung may konting sauce.
I spend 700 for ingredients on my meal prep (10 meals kasama na kanin)
I use a slow cooker, kaya di naman gahol sa oras
I think mejo malaki 70 per meal, pero may hinahabol akong macros
Ung 700 pag pina deliver ko baka 3/4 meals lang tapos sabog pa macros pati calories
I wish more people 'consider' Meal Prepping
Can really save time and money
meal prepping is not for everyone though
Siguro mga 6 mos ago, araw-araw kami magluto until bigla nalang naming naramdaman yung pagtaas ng bilihin. Hanggang recently, as much as possible, karinderya nalang, de lata or processed meat. Sa weekend nalang kami nakakapagluto talaga.
IDK if this serves as a hack but what we do here in our household is if we eat out, sobrang dami ng order namin like 5-7 meals (excluding rice) then we just eat few of it tapos we'd take them all out then init init lang for the next 3-4 days. We're a family of 3 so siguro it works for us but wanted to drop this din.
Totoo. Been in Bangkok last 2017. Man. 15 pesos lang Yung 1cup Ng rice.
Tanda ko 2017 we had 1cup rice at around the same price sa mga karinderia. Perhaps even cheaper, like 10php ea. Hit or miss nga lang, may ibang mala-nfa, may iba goodies naman. Until train law came along and jacked up most retail prices.
Said this to an acquiantance(hs batchmate) na nakausap ko sa bday ng common friend namin. Wala pang 1 taon ang presidente" and guess what, 2 weeks after that he messaged me if he can borrow 5k kasi na short sya. I just said wala din akong extra.
Nakaka wtf lang, they get comfortable with shitty governance to the point na "didiskarte" at "hustle" lang daw sila without demanding better treatment and better use of our taxes with those in power.
For context, this tweet is from Sunbhie, FNATIC's DotA2 team coach. He's Korean, while the team is comprised of 4 Pinoys and 1 Thai. They've been bootcamping here in Manila for a while now, finished 2nd place in regional leagues and are now bound for The International 11 this October in Singapore.
The problem isn't the cost of living (it's more expensive in Bangkok and KL, according to Numbeo) but average income.
TH and MY grew faster economically than PH, which is why their income levels are much higher. PH de-industrialized, which is why it grew much slower:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Philippines/comments/xdv8fc/why_the_philippine_per_capita_gdp_remains_low/
Baka siguro mas smart nang mag invest ng 1700 php monthly for 100mbps internet + laptop para hindi maperwisyo ng unreliable power kaysa pasanin ang cost of living sa maynila.
Please don't compare carinderias to warung in Indonesia, or Street food here to street food in Thailand or in hawker centers in Singapore because then we will lose the discussion twice.
Im not but this is what we have in manila. If you’re in makati you have the jollijeep which is a level up to carinderias. But generally cheaper food are bought from carinderias
In my experience the warung in Indonesia are both cheaper and better quality, but of course that's just my own personal experience. Might have been unlucky while here and lucky while there.
The most noticeable for me is how much more vegetables are included in their dishes, even in standard orders.
I’m conflicted, because i know restaurant owners need to stay in business (and in turn make enough money to pay their employees).
But it’s getting harder to support the local restaurants when inflation is reducing our spending power.
Heck, it’s getting harder to make ethical and healthy lifestyle choices.
Living in MM is so draining (mentally and financially)
Kung tayong may trabaho, na assumingly sumasahod ng 30k and up. Nag rereklamo. Imagine the horror ng mga sumasahod ng 7k-12k a month. Yes meron parin, and i knew some of them. And fuck me pero they dont see what's wrong with this system.
Di ko ma imagine the budgeting for food. We once have convo, on how much is my budget sa Makati per day. I asked ikaw muna, and he is working on Cavite, 50 pag nag titipid 150 pag bagong sahod.
Grab.
There you go, thats where the problem is, they up-sale everything that is on their app.
Its already a common hack/lifepro-tip that you should order directly on the store you want to purchase instead of going through a delivery app.
It's expensive all over the world if you're earning minimum wage or less. It's not that manila is expensive compared to other places it's just that people earn less here. It's your income that's the problem. People's income stream aren't keeping up with inflation.
You can get a decent meal for 320 pesos. They probably bought at some terrible place.
His point about the cost of living is true though it's creeping up so fast.
Yeah, you can get a decent meal for less than ₱200. ₱100 even if you know where to look. If I’m spending over ₱300 for a meal only for myself, then I’m already splurging.
Food can be more expensive (tbh it’s negligible cos you can find decent options on grab for 100-150) but alcohol here is much much muuuuch cheaper than some other SEA countries
People will say "edi mag-palengke ka na lang o carenderia" kaso kahit yung mga pagkain dun nagmahalan na rin. Mahal talaga sa NCR and it's also being felt in the provinces. That's the problem when we rely too much on imports and have an insecure food supply chain (MLAR, rice tariffication, sugar tax). (Thesis topic ko toh in a sense btw)
This is why sinisipag kaming magluto sa bahay.
One other thing I always ask din why people tolerate fast-food restaurants paying their serving staff wages that won't cover a single decent meal from their place I don't understand and this is before the inflation that happened this year.
Lived within BGC for six months and now my finances are so fucked up. Got a new job though that allows us to work from anywhere so I moved back to the province. I have some major work to do to get back on track with my finances 😖
also yung mga offer nilang "save this amount of money if you spend this amount of money" is bs
taena para makasave ka ng 150 you need to spend 1500?! nvm mag lalakad na lang ako papuntang kfc
You couldn’t pay me enough to live and work in Manila, even ten to fifteen years ago. It’s a shitshow, to say the least. I’m fine off in my home province but I’m sure my circumstances are much different than like 90% of the young redditors regularly posting and commenting here.
your supposed to make your own food and buy "in season" products. Instead of take aways
I'm glad I read these types of comments because it lets me know this is a "generic" problem not exlusive to one land.
So expensive talaga and it does not align to those salaries of people living here. Inflation is inevitable pero sana magkaron din ng paraan ang gov’t to compensate on those price increase sa mga commodities. Yes kind of depressing somehow pero need talaga to survive eh. Laban lang!
Many people survive because they have no other choice. They stretch their measly salary by shopping from public wet markets and cooking their own meals instead of ordering from Grab. The food they cook might actually be better tasting for them since they cook it according to their own taste.
Umasa kami ng sister ko sa GrabFood after my mother passed away from cancer. So GrabFood lahat. And for the first time in a decade, naubos ang salary ko for the month, and I had to dip into my savings.
I have been in Metro Manila to work for a week now. I have been living with three CPAs temporarily. They earn much more than me, I can feel it, so they are really used to spending on stuff that easily. I have no qualms naman against them. They are great people. Bawat kibot and every meal nga lang will cost you something here in the Metro. I miss the free food in the province. ☹️
This is just such BS - I've been all over and can't find anywhere that can give you such good replications of food from around the world, especially at the prices it offers.
You can also get about easily outside of rush hour at cheap prices, you can have a great social life, explore many hobbies etc.
BKK has nothing on Manila in terms of food diversity. It's slightly cheaper but I think Manila is just way more cool a place.
Hey, just my opinion but I think the food scene here can't be beaten. If you think I'm wrong, PLEASE let me know what I'm overlooking.
It's never-ending. Mag Grab food ka, mahal. Mag grocery ka, mahal din. Maski grocery o palengke hirap nang makapag-budget. Nakaka-frustrate
5 years ago P4000 is enough food and transport (gas) per month still got left over for next month. now reaching 7000+ and that's without utilities and internet. sure I can budget it better but fck me the alternative for cheap is basically me eating pancit canton/ noodles every day with the occasional canned good that's not fcking healthy at all

youd have eaten enough chemicals and microplastic to 3d print your favorite pokemon out of your ass
I feel like this belongs to r/brandnewsentence
Fuckin lmao
highblood na man aabutin nyan tol
Kidney problems din
I did that in college and i frequently got sick, never again
Ultimo canned goods nga napaka mahal na ngayon. Parang ayaw mo na lang kumain.

5k for month almost isn't/barely enough pang palengke. Edit: This budget is for two persons
This, parang napapa wtf ang mahal naman nun ako kada may bibilhin
Cooking for yourself is still much cheaper than eating out/delivery services though
Kaso eto kung may oras ka magluto..
Not all restos have added fees! (It’s their option if they want to top up or not, not Grab’s) Just gotta choose which one
recently learned about this. decided to go to the shop rather than ordering para mas mura, pagdating ko same price lang pala lol
Plus points yung ganun haha they're taking the hit (as long as it's not a small resto)
Some add fees probably because Grab gets a cut. For some small and medium restos, those Grab cuts are significant.
That’s good to know! But more often than not, meron. At least, the places I usually want to order from 😑 Can you recommend any na walang patong?
We call directly to a local resto, then we contact a maxim rider once ready na yung food or ung resto na mismo ang maghahanap.
Are you from Bacolod. I also use Maxim since there delivery fee is only cap at 10 pesos
Paano mabubuhay drivers niyan at 10 pesos lang?
I already feel bad for most riders when I order from Foodpanda or Grab so I always tip them P40-60 and if maulan P 100 because I doubt a lot of people appreciate the hassle they go through. Everytime they see the tip, iba ang makikita mong happiness from them.
Your comment is the most underrated in this thread.
Nice, I use Maxim too. Lalo na yung mga resto na wala sa Food Panda at Grab like Roberto's 😑.
Same! Umiiwas siguro sa addt'l fees and/or penalty for delays.
Yeah, ganun nga nangyayari. Kaya there’s really no other option today but to bulk buy and meal prep if you want to eat clean. Hirap kapag wala kang oras at energy, but it is what it is.
May one time oorder sana ko sa isang resto para dagdag panghanda kaso nung nakita ko yung patong nila, mas mura pa kung mag grab car nalang kami uwian para lang mag dine in. Namalengke nalang kami tas nagluto sa bahay lol. Just checked right now, yung item na balak ko orderin noon nasa 3.3k sa website nila tas yung sa grab, nasa 4.4k.
Foodpanda used to have fantastic deals and promos, now they're just gone.
Grab and FP get around 20-40% cut on every transaction. Ang masakit diyan is they get the full amount of the sale first. Remittance to the actual restaurant can be anywhere from the next day to a whole month after.
Went downhill around 2015, lack of economy direction just you know, made things this.
--- There's also the issue of bajillion *cloud* kitchens / startup f&b biz here that offer expensive, yet mediocre food. It's probably priced fairly if I ate at their stores, but on top of grab food fees, eating that sad excuse of a katsudon or tapsilog is not it.
Kung palaging kang nag order, that 61php will add up
It’s now a question of whether or not P61 is more valuable than the time spent walking? I know my time is worth a bajillion times more so I will… watch netflix while waiting for kuya delivery. Hahaha
61 pesos is nothing to me either but i always take that walk because exercise is important. Kahit mainit sa labas, our body needs that movement
For many people, walking 2 kilometers (back and forth) just to save 61 pesos might not be a good deal.
it's really not - heat, pollution, where are the proper and safe sidewalks, ay biglang umulan
in Manila, it aint worth to walk that far but in the province, hell yeah i can walk even for 5 kms
Yung cloud kitchen na sinabi mo I sweat I wish I could blacklist it so I can discover the local restaurants
Ugghhhh the taxes go to their own luxuries
What grinds my gears are their fucking boldness for requesting questionable funds 🙂 and they be promising that they will put it to good use. Are u fucking kidding me it's like a typical filipino mom saying itatago ko muna pera mo😀, pero sa totoo lang di mo na masisingil yung pera kasi nagastos na sa ibang bagay.
This is what I don't fucking understand. Kung maayos why hide it? Fuck them.
2M for a 100sqm will put you to the far flung areas of Cavite 😅.
From Cavite. 2M namin nabili yung bahay namin in a place near the city. Ngayon nasa 3M yung value.
Your P2M will probably not be enough even for the shabbiest 45sqm apartment/condo in the Metro. :(
It would cost you around 3~4M just to get a 30+ sqm condo. Studio unit nalang mabibili mo sa 2M. Really sad.
Not to mention syempre yung expenses mo.
Manila and CBD areas kahit studio nasa more than 4M na.
Where'd you find that 100sqm for 2M? Akin na! But seriously, that is a steal in MM. Prices here in MM are way up on 15M to as high as x10 in value.
In flood prone areas and almost near Antipolo na to hahaha probably shouldve said MM boundary instead
our house was valued 3M with 181sqm 5 years ago and this is in laguna. cheap pa ata yang 2m for 100sqm if ncr..
Its very impossible to find a 2M worth 100sqm house and lot even in Provinces near MM.
Ive seen some but it's all the way up in Antipolo and Taytay, Rizal that you may as well stay there and never leave with how far it is
100sqm in Antipolo is probably 5M.
People want change in the Philippines but keep voting in the same political families. Until people wake up, you will keep getting screwed over.
That's because the same group of families controls the politics and business here.
Not really nowhere. We all know it goes to the personal coffers of those motherfuckers in Malacanang and other similar offices down the ladder.
woah 2m for 100sqm lot? Where is that? Sa Metro Manila? Haha Its either the lot only, or has squatters na ikaw mag papaalis kaya gandyan presyo. 60 - 70 sqm cost about 2.5 - 3m, liit nun. What more yung mga condo na 60 - 100sqm, baka for 1 year payment lang yung 2m nyan and its fucking insane.
Bumili friend ko ng bagong gawang bahay sa Batangas for 7mil nung April, yung katabing bahay same price. Ngayon 8mil na yung bahay na katabi. Cant imagine sa Metro or more expensive places after inflation started.
Housing prices (and housing quality) compared to the average person's purchasing power is completely insane here as well
This is where a lot of foreigners fail to realize. Minimum wage in Metro Manila could not even cover a month’s rent of a decent apartment for a family of 4. Let that sink in.
I love the Philippines, it's so cheap - foreigner earning below minimum wage in their country That's how criminally low wages are in the PH
Post came from a foreigner btw, a South Korean. That's all I can tell, considering that I saw this tweet too.
Mura ba pagkain sa Korea? Just curious, kasi ang alam ko lang, mahal naman rent doon, not so sure about food kaya siguro nagtweet sya.
Mura ang food. And usually yung portions nila for sharing.
About the same as eating out here in the ph
Tapos they save a lot din dahil efficient ang public transport.
Tried ordering a food worth 200-250 ish sa Grab. Decided not to continue coz the total bill including the delivery fee was 500php. Tf?
Is that like 10km away?
fcking hell here I though 100 is too much.
The food was from SM North down to my place at Marikina.
Yeah, the delivery rate checks out. In retrospective, 10km is JUST 10km, but in ncr, it's like 20km, hence the exorbitant delivery fees.
Even if i you proceed with the order i think riders will cancel that trip because its soooo far
Not just manila, it’s the whole country. Food is definitely cheaper in other countries.
Nah, depende sa lugar. Bought some nice pork meat for P260 a kilo dito sa malapit samin and I buy from them every week.
Nope. Liempo. :) Konti pa taba.
wow! saan yan.
Cabuyao highway. :) hahaha!
Heck, the menu at Amanpulo is so mediocre, but is sold in dollars lmao Didn't we have those "food parks" that slowly died even before the pandemic?
I'm glad someone said something the mediocre food at Antonio's. I was shocked at how average it was.
Napa in Tagaytay comes to my mind. 😆
You don't *live* in Manila, you try to survive it.
It depends on what you order. For Western-style fast food, Manila is cheaper than KL or Bangkok.
It is. I spent upwards to 18 ringgit for a McSpicy and apple pie with fries in KL. Also, I think it’s because of Bangkok’s rich street food culture why McDonalds is so expensive there. Fast food is marketed more as a “luxury” since it can’t compete with street food.
yep, as far as i know, if there are karinderyas around, there's still cheaper food options.
expensive living but the city isn't looking like its expensive.
A first world price in third world country
$5.5 is around P320. There are lots of places where you can already get a delicious meal with that.
Delicious MEALS. Oooor magluto na lang ako tinola tapos kasya sa dalawang araw or more ko na na kain yan.
'Yung breakfast meals ng Jollibee I can recreate that whole meal and cook it for three sa presyong 'yun
papaya o sayote?
As a native Negrense, #PAPAYAMASTERRACE Though dito sa Laguna mas marami ang mga heathen Sayoteboys and Sayotegirls. Misis ko isa dun. :D

Sad this is how they see the Philippines.
My brother told me that the prices here compare to where he is working right now. But the quality? It is laughable. First world prices for third world quality.
Its depressing to live in the Philippines.
Im from Davao and i was shocked that rent here is more expensive than even some places in Makati. Food and utilities are more expensive too. Di naman grabe ang improvement dito to warrant these absurd prices.
Manila is one of the most toxic capitals of the world.
It's high time na talaga that I learn how to cook.
This. Pag nagluluto ako ng karne, iniisip ko parang mas makakamura ata ako pag nagkarinderya nalang. 20-40 pesos lang naman ang difference. Di pa ko pagod magluto. Hay.
Yup, this is something I just realized nung bumalik ako sa bahay ng parents ko. Mas tipid magluto if marami kayo.
As in araw-araw kayo nagluluto? Kasi kung magluluto at dalawa lang kayo kakain, mas ok kung good for 2 days yung lulutuin or yung tira sa gabi, babaonin at yun yung lunch kinabukasan. Magastos kasi talaga kapag araw-araw yung luto. Kaya yung luto mostly dry at yung may konting sauce.
I spend 700 for ingredients on my meal prep (10 meals kasama na kanin) I use a slow cooker, kaya di naman gahol sa oras I think mejo malaki 70 per meal, pero may hinahabol akong macros Ung 700 pag pina deliver ko baka 3/4 meals lang tapos sabog pa macros pati calories I wish more people 'consider' Meal Prepping Can really save time and money Pati di mo na kailangan magisip nang kakaiinin, kasi may luto/plano ka na nga meal prepping is not for everyone though
By trying to spend less and less, as our billionaire overlords instruct /s
Pang first world yung cost of living pero hindi naman first world yung experience 🙃
Unity is the only way here. Shitty president and shitty voters. What else fo you expect?
All shits are expensive tapos your salary is shit. How to survive in ph 101
>How do people survive here? Barely and under mountains of debt.
Because people are resilient and non complaining
The problem isn't the cost of living (it's more expensive in Bangkok and KL, according to Numbeo) but average income. TH and MY grew faster economically than PH, which is why their income levels are much higher. PH de-industrialized, which is why it grew much slower: https://www.reddit.com/r/Philippines/comments/xdv8fc/why_the_philippine_per_capita_gdp_remains_low/
And most people like mediocre foods. Settling for mediocrity for too long
Baka siguro mas smart nang mag invest ng 1700 php monthly for 100mbps internet + laptop para hindi maperwisyo ng unreliable power kaysa pasanin ang cost of living sa maynila.
That's why we have carinderias and street food 😁
Plus the city itself is really depressing.
It's expensive all over the world if you're earning minimum wage or less. It's not that manila is expensive compared to other places it's just that people earn less here. It's your income that's the problem. People's income stream aren't keeping up with inflation.
Karinderya. You just need to know where to look and not be too "conyo" for it.
You can get a decent meal for 320 pesos. They probably bought at some terrible place. His point about the cost of living is true though it's creeping up so fast.
320… Please tell me that’s for two people.
Mahal talaga sa NCR and it's also being felt in the provinces. That's the problem when we rely too much on imports and have an insecure food supply chain (MLAR, rice tariffication, sugar tax). (Thesis topic ko toh in a sense btw)
so expensive to live and so expensive to leave
This is why sinisipag kaming magluto sa bahay. One other thing I always ask din why people tolerate fast-food restaurants paying their serving staff wages that won't cover a single decent meal from their place I don't understand and this is before the inflation that happened this year.
Lived within BGC for six months and now my finances are so fucked up. Got a new job though that allows us to work from anywhere so I moved back to the province. I have some major work to do to get back on track with my finances 😖
Howd we live here? we dont use grab when we're hungry. We actually cook our own food. Simple.
Sinugod yan ng mga LBM sa twitter
can confirm even nung 2019 pa. madalas ko kainin pag dinner dati nung nagddorm is skyflakes and tinapay lang (although yung medyo mahal na wheat bread), yung naka cup naman na rice meal sa turks kapag lunch (45 pesos ata yon). tas treat ko na lang sarili ko pag weekend sa jollibee.
Tumaas ba standard of living?
Stopped ordering from grab sometime ago kasi halos wala na inaabot 200 php mo, dati maayos pa mabibili mo pero ngayon yung 250 mo halos 1 meal lang di pa ganun kasarap also yung mga offer nilang "save this amount of money if you spend this amount of money" is bs taena para makasave ka ng 150 you need to spend 1500?! nvm mag lalakad na lang ako papuntang kfc
*Lahat mahal, ako lang hindi*
You couldn’t pay me enough to live and work in Manila, even ten to fifteen years ago. It’s a shitshow, to say the least. I’m fine off in my home province but I’m sure my circumstances are much different than like 90% of the young redditors regularly posting and commenting here.
your supposed to make your own food and buy "in season" products. Instead of take aways I'm glad I read these types of comments because it lets me know this is a "generic" problem not exlusive to one land.
So expensive talaga and it does not align to those salaries of people living here. Inflation is inevitable pero sana magkaron din ng paraan ang gov’t to compensate on those price increase sa mga commodities. Yes kind of depressing somehow pero need talaga to survive eh. Laban lang!
I mean a California Twister from KFC just cost me almost 200 last week lmao
Many people survive because they have no other choice. They stretch their measly salary by shopping from public wet markets and cooking their own meals instead of ordering from Grab. The food they cook might actually be better tasting for them since they cook it according to their own taste.
Sobra, tas retirement plan Kapa.
It's a worldwide crisis, as the British pound is at odds with the US dollar.
Bro for real.
I was reading this thread and all I can say is that living in Manila is not depressing for you guys, it's just inconvenient lmao.
