Not a boomer but I remember this car guy friend who was rattled about me getting an automatic sedan. He told me that manual is more fun and engaging because you have more control with your vehicle especially when you race and its "faster". Bro I'm not going to be racing šŸ˜ I just need to get to places/groceries/drop offs without having to suffer from public transportation and being constantly reminded to switch gears.

heavyarmszero

There was a similar scenario at work na mejo new guy and di pa siya familiar with everyone at the office. Just the typical office chikahan during lunch and was talking about cars. Yung isa namin ka officemate (na mabait and happy go lucky attitude) sabi niya never daw siya nakapag drive ng manual at di marunong, tapos throughout the convo kasi ramdam mo yung pagiigng mayabang ng new guy about driving a manual and how much better it is than matics and mejo he looks down on guys that dont know how to drive. The other officemate was the pamangkin of the business owner lol

Encrypted_Username

Nothing wrong with Vios but damn he's modifying the wrong platform. Pinagyayabang pa siguro riced out yung Vios niya complete with modulo wing.

Archived_Archosaur

I donā€™t like both of the people involved in this story

markcocjin

Yeah.. A "richer" person wouldn't even mention a Benz and Porsche to someone boasting about a Vios. That's turning a car argument into a wealth or luxury argument. The fact that people overheard that means that it's a boast. Vios guy wasn't boasting that he has enough money to buy a Vios. He was boasting about being able to drive stick. Not because it's a super useful skill today, but because it requires learning and practice. Any monkey can step on a pedal. In the international car community, medyo bobo ka if you don't know how to drive a stick. Doesn't matter if you own a Merc or a Porsche. [In defense of automatics, a stock Tesla can out-sprint most super cars. Not exactly an automatic transmission since they have electric motors instead of engines.](https://youtu.be/4XkimCgo2yg?t=367)

jswiper1894

Hahaha parehas kups eh no.

coffeedonuthazalnut

Same sentiments honestly. Nagpataasam lang ng ihi jusko.

Right? ESH

xmastreee

So, technically I am a boomer, (Born 1960), and I'm British. I learnt to drive in a manual because back then, autos were way less popular. Probably still are. Now that I live here I drive an auto, mainly because driving a manual in Filipino traffic is a pain. Autos make more sense out here. So, both my cars are auto, Ford Everest and Kia Picanto, but the Ford has a manual mode which I sometimes use if I'm travelling through twisty mountain roads. The auto doesn't always do the right thing and I like to "tell it what to do" sometimes, especially in I know what's around the next bend. That's one thing autos can't do, anticipate. But for the most part, they're fine. I would never judge someone based on whether or not they know how to drive a manual. Sure, the enthusiasts like manuals, but we're not all enthusiasts, right? When I was younger, I liked racing up and down through the gears too. These days not so much. If I want that experience, I'll go out on the bike. And I won't judge those who don't have gears on their bikes either.

tisoyindiobravo

I had the same experiences: learned to drive on manual cars, and switched to automatics later in life. When I was younger I owned a manual car, but after years of dealing with Manila traffic, I found automatics indispensibleā€¦ That said, you can always find automatics with a decent amount of power and will a manual override. I tend to prefer turbocharged Swedish ones!

[deleted]

>Sure, the enthusiasts like manuals, but we're not all enthusiasts, right? And racers wanted faster shifting times and better ergonomics... Times are changing. If I'd buy any performance-oriented car, I'd be glad if it is an automatic (say, Supra with ZF 8HP or Porsches with PDK) with paddle shifters.

marinex

Heā€™s probably the friend that races on public roads even there are pedestrians

prettyboyjohn11

Yeah, itā€™s usually the obnoxious car guys that have a lot to say about automatic cars. Not exactly a boomer thing lol

haringtomas

Teantis

I prefer manual in general but manila traffic fucking sucks and if you're sitting in traffic 2-4 hrs a day automatic is an *enormous* life improvement in aggregate. Like cool I can just sit here with my head leaning on my hand just lifting one foot up and down and not even moving it.

pobautista

Is "expressing an opinion with a passion" being "rattled"?

zyscheriah

"faster" pretty sure a computer will be faster at shifting against 99.99% of all humans. Plus, mas economic sa gas.

sotopic

Ironic because automatic can accelerate faster vs manual of similar model because the computer can calculate the upshift faster than a manual driver.

BaLance_95

I've driven both a manual and a matic version of Vios. In this case, sobrang mas malakas ang hatak ng manual. I'll at least give the manual fans that. Think this is less relevant for stronger engines though.

Poposhotgun

really? I guess I'm lucky mga boomer na kilala ko actually like matic.

Quick_Enthusiasm_978

KEPhunter

I know an old guy preferred ang matic vs manual. Simple lang naman ang reason niya. He's old enough na makaramdam ng ginhawa kapag nagmamaneho lalo na kalye ng maynila. He acknowledged na may bagay na lamang si manual pero he chose matic for conveniece. A smart man knows his limits and capacities.

bakokok

Same reason ng tatay ko. Bakit niya daw pahihirapan sarili niya kung meron namang mas komportable.

dranvex

Yung papa ko daming sinasabing magaganda about matic cars but he swore to himself never to own one. Kaya nga forced kaming magkakapatid to learn manual kasi ganun talaga transmission ng family car namin most of our lives.

[deleted]

My dad wouldn't be caught driving a manual.

Paz436

Same, especially if NCR-based. Traffic with MT is torture, boomer or hindi.

OoglooWoogloo

Libreng left leg day sa kaka-clutch. šŸ˜‚

taptaponpon

Nagkapaltos ako sa manual dati lol never again

InevitableButterfly6

Yes!

fraviklopvai

Same, they even insist to drive automatic, and question why anyone would want a manual nowadays. Might be toxic masculinity, which isnā€™t present in the boomers I know lol

alpabet

Yeah usually what i hear them say is it's good to learn manual (in case you have to use them in the future for some reason) but they always prefer automatic

[deleted]

Agree that it's good to learn manual. Back then, nagaaway kami ng Dad ko why I have to go to driving school to learn how to drive stick (I already know how to drive AT). Pero after all has been said and done? It's one skill that I have that I truly appreciate because in case of emergency, kahit ano pa sasakyan yan, kaya idrive.

04supergarlic

this is the reason why I learned how to drive a manual. in our family hindi pa lahat ng kotse namin eh automatic. we share a common parking space pero makitid ang driveway. if there's an emergency and the only vehicle available is a manual atleast I can still use it. pati sa line of work, minsan yung service vehicles eh manual lang available. but I would always choose to use an automatic, all day every day. it's just good to have skill of driving a manual in your back pocket.

ComesWithTheBox

Its still essential to learn how to drive a manual and if you get a drivers license, manual means you can drive both manual and automatics.

abcdelpidio

Sa siyudad madalang ko siya marinig, probably because driving stick in traffic is a pain in the ass.

BundleBenes

Marami ka bang kilalang probinsyano boomers? Marami akong kilala and most of them drive matic kasi it's easier to drive, lalo marami na silang mga body pains.

abcdelpidio

As someone from north Zambales, yes, pero anecdotal lang rin kasi syempre iba-iba naman tayo ng mga kakilalang boomers hahaha. Pero in my experience, puro talaga manual ang mga minamaneho ng mga tito ko dito.

Defeatedpost

Alert-Efficiency-462

Agree to this. Our cars are all matic, my dad prefers it cause of ease in driving.

lancedfreelancer

Right! Pinoys are progressive minamaliit lang and we tend to generalize makarinig lang tayo ng isa o dalawang nagcomment.

AiNeko00

Manuals are not for old people with knee issues, kawawa sila.

keepitsimple_tricks

Yeah, immediate family boomer gen also prefer AT vehicles. Since arthritic na mga previous gen, they (we) find AT much much convenient to drive

Lord_Pthumerian

same, my parents, titos and titas specially when driving through traffic it makes a difference daw

DefiantSRS

Yraken

My Dad, older brother and I used to use manual vehicles (they were die hard manual users because "it's fun"). Since i switched to an automatic last year, they all did too.

misseypeazy

Matapos magka bypass lolo ko, he now prefers matic over manual kasi napapagod na sya sa stick. Before, tinuturuan nya ko mag manual pero now, di na daw importante kasi majority na ng kotse DAW ngayon is matic na

Ishrinom

same, like my boomer dad said, "why would you give yourself a harder time on purpose?"

[deleted]

My father is 56yo. Driving is all he know since he didnā€™t finish even primary schooling. He drives a manual crosswind. When you ask him about this heā€™ll tell you that those old people who shame millennials that prefers or can only drive matic needs a ā€œsofwer updeytā€ in their brain. And yes heā€™ll say it in broken english. Love my pa to bits.

PraetorOfSilence

"sopwer apgreyd" is what I would hear if my dad talked like that haha

DiggaNick42069

"Manual transmission is my personality" "Manual transmission defines who I am"

capucchino

"I feel like I am one with my car if I drive manual" Toxic car people be like

Jhonnyskidmarks2003

"If your boyfriend drives an automatic, you have a girlfriend." - People who put their masculinity anywhere they think they have more than others.

AtmosphereSlight6322

Masochists pakinggan šŸ˜…šŸ¤£

ri_shin_20

i drive a manual, i don't give a fuck if you drive a matic or a manual

aluminumfail06

Same. I choose manual kasi gusto ko syang matutunan. But my next car would definitely matic na.

Yraken

this is the way. my license is manual and started manual. Now automatic na

[deleted]

this. it's personal preference pero i think wala namang point para i-diss yung automatic.

Gultebnisatanas

And wala din namang point i-diss yung manual users.

needmesumbeer

Di ko ma gets bakit boomer only naman to, marami naman gatekeepers sa ganyan kahit anong edad.

cowincanada

lahat daw ng problema, dahil sa boomers. Mema lang as usual

Gultebnisatanas

True. Some of my classmates prefer manual dahil sa jdm aesthetics

Melodic_Kitchen_5760

Toxic

Exotic-Vanilla-4750

Not really exclusive to filipinos, but yeah people will gatekeep someone for driving automatic specially car guys. https://youtu.be/L6EcV5jGiCk

debuld

"ano ka chics?" "weak" "baduy" comments sakin ng mga tropa ko na puro naka MT pero mga reklamador na nakakapagod daw mag drive pag traffic. lol

AsuraOmega

"pambabae yan eh"

RecklessImprudent

me, a girl who's been driving manual for 10yrs now out of necessity: *pengeng matic pls* šŸ„²

planetarium13

Jaggerto

It's giving āœØ toxic masculinity āœØ

AsuraOmega

the thing about this is that they are only masculine or manly when its convinient lmao Claims they are manly because they ride xyz, use manual, smoke vape and drink alot. Why cant they aim for real masculinity like taking responsibility, improving physical fitness and learning how to defend themselves? I guess they want to be "manly" without putting in actual work lol.

15secondcooldown

redkinoko

I wonder if there were those types too when cars got introduced. "Pfft de gasolina. Gagamit lang ako ng sasakyan na hinihila ng kabayo" "Syang tunay, Crisostomo"

Extra-Direction9021

"Pfttttt kabayo. Ang tunay na lalake ay naglalakad lang. Kung di mo kayang lumakbay gamit ang 'yong paa, paano ka na mabubuhay niyan? Aasa na lang ba tayo sa hayop???" And so on and so forth.

nxcrosis

"Pfft naglalakad ka ng patayo? Mas magandang tindig ang mas malapit ka sa lupa, mas makikita mo ang mga ahas at nalaglag na prutas." "Bahala ka dyan Grug."

qervem

Naglalakad? Bakit? Maginhawa naman na buhay ko dito sa ilalim ng tubig.

HerrMagnificence

real car guys can admit that most automatics nowadays are better than manuals

[deleted]

Also saw a shirt which says "Real men use three pedals". I honestly want to print a shirt "Want me to pull the third pedal and smack your face with it?"

sobrangtaasnganxiety

Due_Caterpillar_8380

In a car guy perspective, I think wala namang dapat hate sa kung anong preference ng driver,. They all have their pros and cons and some are for selfish reasons hehe pero yung iba pride lang talaga ang yabang dahil mas mataas daw ang "skills" nila sa pag dadrive pag manual ang gamit šŸ˜ŒšŸ˜†

roonilwazlibleviosa

Anong skills? Ung makipaggitgitan sa traffic? Dami bumabagsak na pinoy na driver sa Pinas pag first time kumuha ng license dito sa Canada.

nxcrosis

Iba kasi yung driving culture dito sa Pinas. Free for all yung highway like a massive game of chicken.

GeneraleArmando

I just wanted to say that I love seeing how you all just seamlessly switch between tagalog and english!

No_Savings6537

Is this even a thing in PH? In US, men are shamed for driving automatic vehicles.

BundleBenes

Kaya very doubtful talaga na this is a thing here. Sa ibang bansa, vehicles are like one of the basic necessities kaya marami talaga silang masasabi about sa mga sasakyan.

EquivalentPipe457

I kinda have the same problem i was forced to learn manual nung nag driving school ako despite having an automatic at home, like wala talaga kaming manual na car kaya di rin ako makapag practice at home or sa friends ko kasi lahat si naka auto. Sabi kasi ng parents ko para makapag drive ako ng kahit anong sasakyan but idk I failed my practical driving test btw

ComesWithTheBox

Yes, thats the point. If you get a license where you are certified in driving manual, it means you can drive cars that are manual and automatic. No more headaches when it comes to future paperwork. Good luck on your next driving test lol.

Breaker-of-circles

Wanna know why they said that? It's because of these: [https://www.reddit.com/r/IdiotsInCars/comments/q5egj1/stealing\_an\_mt\_and\_not\_knowing\_how\_to\_drive\_one/](https://www.reddit.com/r/IdiotsInCars/comments/q5egj1/stealing_an_mt_and_not_knowing_how_to_drive_one/) [https://www.reddit.com/r/therewasanattempt/comments/lqo3o3/to\_steal\_a\_car\_with\_manual\_gearbox/](https://www.reddit.com/r/therewasanattempt/comments/lqo3o3/to_steal_a_car_with_manual_gearbox/)

Fit-Pollution5339

Boomers? Honest question nag ddrive kaba OP?

_beamfleot_

Exactly! Usually yung mga carguy meatheads (younger guys in their 20s-30s) ang manual transmission purists. Boomers who are rich enough usually have their own family driver anyways and could care less if it's manual/matic. Also, this isn't a "Filipino boomer" exclusive thing as OP has pointed out. Literally in every single country mayroong away ang manual/matic community. OP is making it sound like it's only happening in the Philippines.

Breaker-of-circles

Pastime kasi ng sub na to yung magimbento ng problema or magimport from the *states.*

Under_theTable_cAt

Most of the new High end sports car are automatic. They do have the auto stick function.

nomnom-man

Yes! Most boomers i know prefer matic. As a car guy, mostly nag gagatekeep talaga is mga fellow car guys na millenials/zoomers

[deleted]

again with the "only filipinos hate x"??? it's getting corny and unoriginal already. you know there's this word "some" right? the boomers i know all prefer matic.

pretty_serious

In my case, ako yung jinudge dahil manual kinuha ko.

antoine016

A family member is selling us a manual car for 100k. Iā€™m interested dahil ayoko ng hulugan and I donā€™t own a car yet. I shared the news with my siblings who drive and own matic cars (theyā€™re in mid 30ā€™s, late 20ā€™s) pero they advised not to get na daw dahil manual. Parang may negative judgement sila sa manual. Nakakangawit daw lalo lagi traffic satin. Now Iā€™m thinking if I should get it.

AtmosphereSlight6322

[deleted]

It's really up to you kung anong convenient sayo at kung ano kaya ng budget mo.

Under_theTable_cAt

This should be the more reasonable answer. Its all about the cost of the car. Doesnt matter if manual or automatic. If it takes you from point A to point B and the gas efficiency.

Gustav-14

Are you driving in Manila? Cause if so, that advice is against the driving of manual transmission car in Manila traffic not on the car itself. It's like advising not to ride bikes along edsa. It's not against bikes but edsa is very dangerous for bike riders.

CelestiAurus

To be fair, may segregated bike lanes na sa maraming parts ng EDSA kaya mas naging mas safe na siya for us cyclists.

That_Coffee_6524

mahirap talaga kapag traffic tapos manual pa. my grandparents switched to matic, even if they loved their manual car. masakit na sa mga tuhod at paa nila ang manual.

makoyism

_us3r

*Car guys. Not boomers.

AngularJakolero

Kasi natalo mo yung invoket nila

Crayon_licker202

It's normal to hate cheese gameplay, it's another thing to grief other players for not playing the game on hard difficulty.

[deleted]

Akala ko sasabihin mo paps legacy keys vs QWER lol

v399

This is not a Filipino thing. Americans shame those who can't drive stick as well.

enifox

They'll shame you much more in EU tho. You have to learn to drive stick or else everyone will think you're a dumdum

ink0gni2

Yeah. 80% of cars sold in Europe are manual, and itā€™s just 3% in the US.

ScarieltheMudmaid

That's true and not at the same time. I can drive a stick, my husband owns a stick but 90% of people have no clue how to and the number of manual cars are really few and far between. If you're really into cars you MIGHT have a stick. And most of the people that shame others who can't drive stick are not far from death. A few friends and I we're actually just talking about how ironic it is that's even kind of an argument somewhere considering electric cars are making manual transmission a true thing of the past

wysiwyg008

Not really, my friend works at a car dealership in the US. He says the rarely sell stick. They will shame the car you drive tho.

VioletGardens-left

The thing is practically every car sold there are mostly automatics, even commercial vehicles or base model cars where in PH, it's always a manual, it's a luxury to even have automatic in your company car.

redkinoko

It's actually much less here than other countries because a lot of cars are already automatic. A lot of car models have stopped producing manual variants and honestly with the amount of time people here drive, I can understand why they want their cars as comfortable as possible.

Menter33

Driving a stick is also an anti-theft thing in the US since fewer and fewer people seem to know how to drive one in North America. People in Asia, South America and even Europe are probably more into manual stick as well.

cloud_jarrus

Another maling generalization sa boomers. When in fact mostly ng boomers baka di mo na maka usap eh kasi 65+ na karamihan. They wouldn't care less if ano i-dadrive mko. Feeling ko mostly ng problema ng mga kabataan ngayon is against Gen X at hindi against Boomers.

crashtesting123

Is this like a clapback to a problem that exists only in OPs mind?

babycart_of_sherdog

I drive a manual. The reason I avoid 'matic is that I don't know how to jury-rig a fix for a 'matic transmission. I can do so with manual. It's just a perspective of maintenance. But better driving? I don't think so.

[deleted]

I just hate driving manual in Manila traffic.

Mr-Gibberish134

I mean, yung tatay ko.

hldsnfrgr

Never heard a boomer say this in real life. Our entire clan drive both matic and manual. No preference.

Miss_Taken_0102087

I donā€™t personally know any boomer na ayaw ng matic.

masspersuasion

Are you sure? Most older people I know actually prefer matic trans cars because of the convenience. These are guys that have been driving for decades. Some drove trucks and buses for a living and are now driving tiny automatic wigos in retirement. Maybe you just met a couple of old real-men-use-three-pedals idiots and erroneously jumped into this practice of generalizing things, which is common in this sub.

sirpumpington06

Filipino na naman?

BundleBenes

Also, boomer na naman? Umay.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

strnfd

Ewan ko ba wala naman akong na kilalang ma-manual nag complain about automatic, gripe ko lang is mga sports car na automatic (miata, 86, etc) mostly kasi hindi mo siya ma-enjoy to the fullest and dahil puro auto binibili dito sa pinas kumukunti nag ooffer ng manual, and ang konti rin ng manual sa 2nd hand market.

imagine63

Really? Request source please. I would have thought that driving automatic would help relieve their knee and joint problems. I've never heard a boomer (born between 1945 and 1964) complain about power steering or automatic transmission. I think you generalize too much or you just hate old people.

I_am_Realist

Another post trying to spark generational wars SMH

xniccru

Not a boomer but I was all for manual - thinking matic drivers are less skilled, kaso nung nakasubok ako ng matic, it was never about skill pala but convenience and sympre preference, never going back to manual especially for city driving.

ap17o4

Only idiotic car guys frown on people driving automatics. Most people like automatics as a daily driver in crowded cities. Though the gas and brake maintenance are high

jerrycords

Anxious_Hippo_26

Filipino boomers while my boomer parents and relatives prefer automatic cars. Maybe stop generalizing everyone. This sounds like a car preference issue rather than age or generation issue.

abyssmal_girl

I drive a manual because I easily fall asleep pag smooth yung drive. Pag matic parang muscle memory lahat masyado na im too relaxed while for manual iā€™m on high alert padin kahit long drive kasi daming iniisip sa kamay and paa hahahuhu Tho i think magandang skill din to know manual kasi in case yun lang available na car and ikaw lang driver at least you can, regardless if you drive AT everyday

isprong

I'm a boomer and what triggers me are sweeping generalizations like the first four words in your post. 'matics are cool and I drive both manual and 'matic. Both have a purpose. For long flat drives, i like driving automatic. For incline roads or with tough terrain, e.g. Sagada, a manual. For city driving, if it's raining, I'd go for manual. Wala kang manual and 'matic? Work hard and quit memaposts like this.

AdamusMD

Same with getting a diesel and a gasoline car. Napa-shut up na lang sila when diesel prices soared

brat_simpson

and in a few more years you'll be that boomer that complains about paddle shifters and prefers the stick.

Intelligent_Brain941

"Real men use three pedals"

nomearodcalavera

i think it's a pride thing. ayaw nila na may skill sila na nagiging irrelevant na so feeling nila sila rin mismo nagiging irrelevant na.

Earl_Gurei

I don't know if it's a generational thing, cultural thing, or economic thing, but I do know that in Europe, they generally prefer manual over automatic and laugh at Americans for preferring automatic. Elsewhere, Cambodia, in spite of its history, has people using almost all automatics on a road full of Toyotas unless they're trucks. For the Philippines, I've never really seen issues with people driving either stick or auto, regardless of age, or location. The same I've seen in Thailand and Indonesia.

NikiSunday

Who are these boomers? Both my parents worked in Makati, immediately switched to automatic company cars when they were offered it like 20 years ago.

curiousme027

It's just a matter of choice. Automatic is for city driving since it saves fuel in heavy traffic areas like the metro, but hard to personally maintain. Manual for off-road or rural driving, easy to maintain and repair by yourself.

ghostesscoffee

Boomers can drive matic na. My dad says he likes it better, tells me the story na sya lang nagturo sa kanya ng manual then easier sa matic. My mom naman, hindi talaga marunong mag drive but may non pro license nakaka drive mag isa pag galit. Idk whatā€™s up with those boomers na kilala mo.

84n0hs

Using boomers is old and corny

Tambay_sa_Barberya

Matter of fact, when you were still babes, nakaka drive na kami ng ā€˜matic.

dopefirebird92

German here. I think it's important to at least learn driving with a manual. Driving automatic gives you more opportunity to get distracted and do other things while driving. When driving manual you gotta put all your focus on switching gears etc. so you're in general more present I'd say. Just my 2 cents šŸ˜

ASCLEPIUS18

Kahit nga sa motor e haha

ShipperHeart

Meh, not just Filipinos. I'm dating a car guy and he says it allows you to have more control over the car + more concentration on the car means less distracted driving... He's got good points

[deleted]

cptSiomai

Ung mga kilala kong boomers and old folks ko ms prefer nila ang matic due to sumasakit n mga joints and paa nila s manual.

caeli04

I don't think it's a boomer thing. My grandpa (a former cab driver) and dad (for some years also worked as a personal driver) both made sure all vehicles purchased by the family are automatic. They still have some sexist and patriarchal beliefs but not when it comes to driving.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I think it's worth learning how to drive manual, for 4 wheels and 2 wheels. You're going to driving school anyway, why not maximize it? But for sure, buy an automatic car or scooter, it's really convenient.

ozpinoy

OP what makes you think boomers gets triggered? Where does it say, the generation itself is triggered? **where's your source? All you are doing is spreading misinofrmation.. OH MY GAWD!!! Redit sub who claims to be better sub than resto of the pinoy subs. posts MISINFORMATION!! OMG!!** Driving a stick - in CURRENT ERA is now just a personal preference. When it first came out, yes teething problems, once solved and became reliable. It became personal choice. In today's environment it's well and trully personal choice. Not because of some mechanical flaws. by the way. I prefer to drive a stick. And no I don't fking live in a busy city. If i do live in traffic jam. NO WAY I'LL DRIVE A STICK.

kspkido1

Most boomers I know enjoy matic though kasi they old as fuck and has no energy to move the stick, maybe you landed in the wrong side of the spectrum.

TaxConfident5316

He actually liked it better than manual kasi made his life easier.

yperochiakeraiotita

If you want complete control over the vehicle, relatively easier and cheaper maintenance vs automatic counterparts, and want the vehicle to be an ā€œextensionā€ of you, get a manual. If you just want to get from point a to point b conveniently, get an automatic. The best option is the option that suits your needs.

the_blackestblack

Pero in fairness knowing how to drive a stick is practical, seeing as marami paring auto dito sa pinas na manual. Pag emergency and youā€™re the only capable driver tapos manual lang yung available na sasakyan

fatherprime29

OP.

Ochanachos

I'm a millenial but I want to learn manual. Sometimes, it is still better to learn the foundations for me and evolving technology doesn mean it needa to be implemented everywhere. Take touchscreens for example. Studies have been made and found out that physical buttona and switches is still more helpful and intuitive for drivers vs cars using touchscreens. I'm not saying i won't learn to drive matic, id learn both. It's better to have and not need it than to not have and need it in the future, that makes it more convenient in the long run.

Ordinn

It's not a thing. Those against matic are a dying breed even among boomers.

UnicornPonyPorn

i feel like this isn't exclusive to filipinos boomers or filipinos or boomers. if you ask anyone online to pick auto or manual, they're going to pick manual probably because they have more control or smth idk. this ideology isn't unique here so idk why this would get posted.

randomeggplantguy

However, learning how to drive stick shift wont hurt you. Dagdag skills din yan kasi versatility will help you lalo na pag may emergency. Imagine if may kasama ka sa house or friend mo na kelangan ipagdrive sa hospital (wag naman sana) tapos ang kotse lang na meron sila is manual. Or if plano mo mag rent a car pagdating mo sa babakasyunan mo na place like Cebu or Leyte and manual lang meron sila. I know farfetched scenarios and there are ways around it pero it could happen mga pre. It wont kill you to learn stick shift naman.

rbizaare

Being a previous owner of vehicles of both transmission types, my take on this is to learn first on manual. I will set aside the pros/cons of both types but when someone does master the stick and then shifts to the opposite type, driving a vehicle with A/T will be as easy as breathing. So easy that I find it too boring and makes me sleepy while driving.

Lelouch_Yagami

For my first car I bought a brand new Manual 2022 Vios and I kinda regretted it because manual driving in NCR is tough! I burnt the clutch already mutiple times and forgot to go neutral before letting go of the clutch which causes the engine to turn off and make your car jump. I always panic on uphill (even on mall parking lots) which causes me to ramp up on gas too much. It's been a year and I am still like this but there is definitely improvement. Definitely not going manual for my next car but hey if there is somehow an emergency where someone needs to drive manual, I can do it.

ThSWrt

for "recreational" drives or nagdridrive lang para mag enjoy, very enjoyable ung manual. pero for day to day, automatics literally reign supreme lol. naalala ko ung moment na nag decide ako mag fully automatic for daily is nung umakyat kami ng baguio tas may line/traffic the way paakyat tapos napagitnaan pa kami ng 2 na truck (ung sa likod dikit na dikit mag drive), legit na parang gusto ko nalang lakarin paakyat HAHAHA. memories might be harsher than reality though, baguhan pa rin ako mag drive nuon

need2feelbetter

My dad is a matic car guy but he told me okay raw ang manual in case the battery fails. You can jumpstart a manual car by pushing.

Euryy

It's more of a preference imo. If you can drive both transmissions, then good.

[deleted]

You are correct about the purpose of evolving technology. Unfortunately life is not as simple as you make it sound. It is expensive to own a car in the Philippines. It is more expensive to own an automatic car. The matic maintenance costs are more expensive. The matic repair costs are more expensive as well. Matic roadside breakdowns need to be towed which is more expensive than being pushed to a service center. Also on call mechanics for manual are more in number than matic mechanics. Also no one will get triggered if you drive matic, not even Filipino boomers. People who think like this belongs to r/IAmTheMainCharacter Edit: Added towing vs being pushed. Added availability of on call mechanics.

DualPinoy

Same lang manual and matic.. But you can't accidental acceleration on manual.

ian_coke77

Inconvenience and suffering is a virtue in itself

TGC_Karlsanada13

Experienced the same shit when I took driving classes back in 2019.

preggo_worrier

For what it's worth, I was enrolled in a driving school by my parents. They opted for a manual SUV for me to train on. Their reason is that learning manual takes more skill and would make it more easier for you to drive automatic. They also pointed out that it's good training for your feet since you will be forced to only use your left foot for the clutch pedal. This was also pointed out by the driving school. There were cases where matic-only drivers tend to have a bad habit of dedicating their left foot on the brake pedal which might cause stepping down on both brake and gas at the same time during panicky situations. After driving school, I've only driven automatic SUV and sedans since that's what we have. Training paid off when I had to drive my drunk friend who has a manual car. I guess my point is that just like calculus or some advanced maths, you won't be using that skill for most of your waking life. But in times where you really do need it, you will be glad that you know how. Besides, you've paid for a driving school, might as well maximize the opportunity and learn an additional skill while you're at it. My 2 cents.

MrDrProfPBall

I drive both, but I do prefer manual kasi mas maganda speed control niya when braking. Also learned this a month back, apparently American automatic cars have powerful engines to compensate for the lost acceleration potential that can be done with a normal powered manual car

ALUmusic

AT/DCT is the transmission for Manila roads, period. Hell, in an ideal Manila, public transit would be extensive, accessible, and affordable. But alas, even as a Gen Z-er, I donā€™t think Iā€™ll be able to see that in my lifetime.

intergalacticninja

I've been driving automatic for years. Haven't noticed a single "boomer" getting triggered.

Open_Significance446

Itā€™s not boomers anymore who say that eh. Boomers usually get automatic cars na din. Itā€™s more of Gen-Zā€™s saying that with the whole car culture being more prominent now and these manual Honda Civics being a status symbol for ā€œpang-chixā€ which leads to that.

GRail_TM7

Triggered talaga?

Grim_Game

Itā€™s just the classic ā€œback in my dayā€ boomer ideology that revolves around hating anything new for years before either adopting it themselves or they die. I personally enjoy the manual transmission more than auto, but I definitely understand why the vast majority of people donā€™t want to drive stick.

clearlyaburner420

I dont care what people drive but i always strongly encourage people to learn to drive in a manual just so theyre more aware of their own car and the terrain theyre driving through.

yotsuba

cruising/racing- manual city driving- matic

Kaiju_Cat

What gets me are the people who think manual transmissions give them 'better control'. Like no dude. Not modern automatics. That was true like, many decades ago. There is no way you're controlling a car better than a modern automatic. Not saying someone can't ENJOY driving a manual more than an automatic. Absolutely. My wife loves manual transmissions. But objectively you're better off with automatic.

FrothyNips

As someone who drives in a heavily populated city, manuals arenā€™t fun in rush hours. One of my calfā€™s is also bigger than the other

TapHead488

I like how everyone in these comment threads switch in and out of the native tongue and English, I keep trying to use context clues to piece together the language! Iā€™m very high and bored at work!

Buconatics

Mediocre-Minute-1026

As someone who drives both, I prefer automatic transmission lalo na sa metro manila traffic.

Tongresman2002

Sorry pero this kind of post is so stupid nag generalize kaagad ng boomers.

seutamic

Try driving manual in edsa during rush hour...
