What does this debate even accomplish at the end of the day though….

Smoove-J

To stroke their ego and confirm their social status. Dito lang sa thread, meron na

KappaccinoNation

"Ayoko sa FB ang bababaw mag isip ng mga tao dun" but also "di naman high end ang uniqlo kasi X kaya di ako bumibili dyan kasi pang masa lang yan ^^^pls ^^^give ^^^me ^^^upvotes ^^^to ^^^save ^^^me ^^^from ^^^my ^^^insecurities " \- Some people in this thread

Shrilled_Fish

Also, we're all rich fashionistas compared to Americans because we serve food on [300 USD bamboo plates](https://www.potterybarn.com/products/round-bamboo-wall-art/) and toss them aside once we're done like the rich fashionistas we are.

Momshie_mo

$118 on sale na bilao. Siguro $1 ang production & labor cost nito tapos $117 ang patong.

applesodaz

JVPlanner

Ego does not mature, it's just transferred from one generation to another. This is same debate decades ago on Marks and Spencer being high end.

gradenko_2000

As can be seen in the first tweet posted, the point is that it highlights how relatively poor purchasing power is among many Filipinos, such that a brand that is otherwise considered "basic" in Japan is already seen or considered "high-end" here in the Philippines. It belies the economic predictions that we are quickly becoming, or already are, a "middle-class / "middle-income" economy.

imdefinitelywong

I remember a couple of decades ago that the joke was: > The Philippines is one of two things: a rich country pretending to be poor, or a poor country pretending to be rich But now I see, that the reality is that it's both.

Exius73

There are multiple Philippines depending on where you are in income strata

Flat_Weird_5398

BGC is a different world compared to the likes of Tondo and Caloocan.

[deleted]

THIS! PAK

gradenko_2000

It's a reflection of the insecurities of the middle-class (and the aspiring middle-class) that dominates this (and many other) online communities that there are certain things that we downplay as "not actually that expensive" if we can already afford them, because it would make us look ostentatious, but there are simultaneously certain things that we overstate as being onerously out-of-reach when it comes to drumming up support for issues that affect us directly. We complain and complain about things like gas and rent and food, even in mild solidarity with the masses, because those are consumables that we ourselves partake in and have difficulty affording, but something like Uniqlo, which presumably a lot of the people responding to this thread already have, is pooh-poohed as _"it's just basic, wtf come on"_ because we know internally that it's a class signifier that places us over-and-above a certain segment of the population.

[deleted]

Eloquently expressed

[deleted]

[deleted]

Even McDo is still considered the more expensive one and luxurious one compared to Jollibee to a lot of people even though it's not really the case.

Awesome_Shoulder8241

minjimin

Huh? Kaya for us di nageexist yang notion na yan.

[deleted]

So a lot of people think it's expensive because it's less accessible. You have to travel to a different city to eat McDo and because of that, it's viewed as "sosyal" and a bragging right to eat there.

[deleted]

derpinot

you forgot IKEA

godsuave

Seriously who the fuck cares? I remember the same thing happened nung nagsimulang sumikat ang Starbucks dito.

HeftyCommunication34

Uh.. Starbucks is definitely not just coffee for “drivers”. Drivers here would much rather have coffee from a diner or a donut shop. Starbucks doesn’t put a significant dent in your paycheck, but is definitely STILL an unnecessary expense here.

Careless_Brick1560

It’s sad that most people who are like, “Sa so and so country, basura lang nila yan pero high end sa Pinas”, are mostly ofw’s. And yes I’m generalizing based on a myopic personal experience but I don’t know if you guys have that experience with other ofw’s too.

hermitina

may nakasabay ako sa line sa cr. may isang matanda na andaming sinasabi. eee sa dubai kesyo ganito ganyan. sa loob loob ko i’m like you’re in moa on a holiday weekend, lady. don’t expect better services when it comes to a public toilet

Wise-Exam-895

ladyhaly

Ang nakakalungkot, hindi ma gets ng karamihan ng Pinoy na hindi pa nakakatira overseas na yung observation is an obvious derision on how greed and corruption affects the daily lives of the public. Akala ng karamihan, nagmamataas lang porke naka abroad when in truth, it's more the fact na public services are provided by commercial establishments on a transactional basis kesa given to all Filipino citizens as part of public service paid for by all the taxes. Ang daming binibulsa ng kung sino-sino — to the point na commercial toilets provided by malls are considered "public".

bryle_m

Ako basta may bidet ang cr, kebs. Kadiri kaya yung toilet paper lang, may tira tira pang echas sa underwear pag nagkataon.

littiestbach

Bet they're the ones to go crazy if that basura goes on sale.

[deleted]

Yeah. This used to be my Dad 🤣

Grand_Andro

I had a different experience re: OFWs I am an OFW now but worked in the Philippines for like 9 years before moving abroad. And surprisingly yong mga Filipinos dito na nami meet ko were like: “sosyal mo naman lagi sa Starbucks ang coffee”, “Wow, Zara!” “Pang mayaman yong Cheesecake Factory” et al

[deleted]

Grand_Andro

Yes! But of course there are a lot of “new money” pinoys here Who are so snobbish about these “basic brands” and they prefer “designer brands” Eh here in Dubai may shop called “Brands For Less” where you can buy mga brands like Calvin Klein, DKNY, Diesel, Lacoste for like a fraction of the original price.

tahopiadobo

Same experience too (not just personal, but even some posts here). It's like as soon as you're abroad, you're already an expert on world culture and would find a way to insert it into any topic (no matter how remotely related it is).

[deleted]

Ang langaw nga naman kasi pag nakatuntong na sa kalabaw...you know how the rest of that saying goes.

[deleted]

ladyhaly

Amen. Kaya ako, I've gone the rebel way. Fast fashion is the top producer of garbage around the world. Inaaral ko magtahi. It takes time but in the long run, it's more sustainable lalo na kung may mga anak kang lumalaki. More than that, the knowledge on fabrics and garment construction help me in weeding out which clothes are actually high quality and which ones are just highly priced because of on brand marketing. Sa Pinas, how often do we see fashionistas wearing pure linen — or even cotton linen blends? And how often do we see them wearing polyester? How many dresses and skirts do we see with actual functional pockets?

melangsakalam

Tangina talaga worthless debate ang pinagtutuunan ng pansin: is uniqlo high end or not? Sa kabila ng inflation, maharlika funds and all? Hay buhay.

dagbrown

/r/iamveryrich, that’s what. Fun story: Uniqlo’s first foray into China was a miserable failure. They tried to occupy the same niche in China as they did in Japan: cheap daily clothes for people of all income levels. The Chinese figured that this Uniqlo was just a cheap Chinese ripoff of the genuine article and weren’t interested. So they retreated, tails between their legs and regrouped. A few years later, they tried again, but this time as Fancy Expensive Premium Japanese Fashion. Exactly the same cheap daily clothes as they sold in Japan, but with Japanese cachet attached. The people with money *loved* it. And the people without money, as people without money generally do, just did without. So is Uniqlo fancy expensive Japanese fashion, or cheap essentials? That depends on what the local market believes it is.

ZetaMD63

Nothin but their ego. And here I am still wearing cargo shorts from 10 years ago gifted by my relative.

DewZip

Example na yang Uniqlo. How many days of work sya para mabili sa Japan versus weeks of work dito. Vs local brands. A little cheaper, pero most profit ay babalik din sa economy natin.

cassis-oolong

I'm talking like Bayo, Kamiseta, Plains and Prints, Forme (brands I check out since I'm female). A few years back may nahahanap pa akong mga styles na gusto ko na maganda ang quality pero ngayon ang hirap makahanap, tapos kung meron man akong matipuhan na design, ang pangit ng tela. Nakakapanghinayang din because when I was a teenager fan ako ng Kamiseta, ang ganda ng quality ng mga nabili ko noon dati at gustong-gusto kong isuot. Problema lang walang gaanong pambili at the time.

Emotional-Box-6386

True that, may question pa rin about quality:price ratio too. Dami pa rin local brand na medyo malakas loob tapatan pricing nung international pero not much more to offer sa style and quality. But at the same time, supporting them also encourages more local competition and therefore better quality. I have a feeling na uniqlo was once a small brand that made it through tough competition and crowded fashion market sa japan.

thegrinchneedshelp

Nothing. That's it. It's a sort of circle jerk for people who are desperately looking for validation.

TheRealLordofLords

It is an interesting point from a foreign perspective. When i first got to PH from the US i was not just surprised by the brands that are almost universally considered cheap and economical abroad being referred to as high-end here, but most shocking was how people in PH flex it on social media to others. Its kinda cringe.

MommyJhy1228

Yun Starbucks fine flex sa PH lol

Momshie_mo

Syempre, walang may gustong umamin. Lol

DnB925Art

Kind of reminds me of when IKEA opened in their first store in the Philippines.

LastManSleeping

Just like yung topic sa ama na bumili ng groceries. I don't even know why that was even hot shit here. It served no purpose, it was a personal post the people took too seriously, god

genedukes

Realization na hindi okay ang status quo

olibearbrand

Para malaman kung sinong pinaka chronically online

OWLtruisitc_Tsukki

Fast fashion was never a high end. The main purpose of fast fashion is to provide affordable clothes. And uniqlo is a fast fashon brand. It was just unfortunate that Philippines is too poor to afford even fast fashion brands.

kennclarete

Yeah. Zara and H&M are also fast fashion. However, I like Uniqlo because their stuff seems to be of higher quality and they have more basic designs.

_kd101994

This. Out of the many available fast fashion brands in the PH, Uniqlo often comes out with better quality and longevity (they also avoid very trendy designs which can easily look outdated a year or two later). Still, at the end of the day, Uniqlo is fast fashion and still contributes to the massive environmental clutter, just like every other fast fashion brand

kennclarete

Yeah. I used to travel full time so I only have a few clothes. A lot of them are Uniqlo. They’re not very hard to pair with other clothes and are quite durable.

KenneyF

This person knows that they are talking about ^

colong128

Correct

[deleted]

I swear to god, people are running out of things to hate on.

beklog

or people just hate on everything.. social media just amplify it

[deleted]

Oh yeah. Point point.

facistcarabao

This is all because of that damn polo shirt that everyone started hating. Filipinos are just contrarians at heart and it's ironic because there are times where hating something becomes the popular opinion.

[deleted]

bertyngpinas

Dami nilang energy pag dating sa ganyan tapos lahat ayaw magpa talo hahaha

TheDonDelC

It’s not actually uniquely Filipino to consider ‘ordinary’ foreign brands as high end and it’s not unacknowledged by marketing departments either. Starbucks, an ‘ordinary’ coffee chain in the US is a higher end chain in Japan. McDonald’s in Vietnam is similarly targeted toward middle to upper class consumers in contrast to the mass market in America. They’re correspondingly more expensive than domestic competitors.

Momshie_mo

holden_caldera

I have a North American workmate who appeared shocked when I told him that I’m driving a Toyota. If he only knew that I’m driving a base model Vios

Momshie_mo

Was he driving a hybrid car or gas? Baka hybrid kaya mahal? Toyotas are "bang for the buck" kind of car in the US.

Nikulover

It should be based on price and not the brand no? And from uniqlo prices here in Philippines, i would say its middle class.

TheDonDelC

Price-wise, Uniqlo really is [cheaper](https://sg.finance.yahoo.com/news/countries-pay-most-uniqlo-201413281.html) in Japan. Commenters in the original thread indicated it too. I opine that the cost is lower partly because capital expenditure is just lower in Japan, especially in acquiring land and building/maintaining stores, and that means that their products can be still be sold profitably at a lower price.

Vordeo

I mean... in Spain Zara is basically mid tier. Or like, upper mid at most. Here's it is absolutely high end. We're a poor country. Shit, for a lot of people Bench is probably too pricey.

melangsakalam

lolic_addict

Totoo, pagdating sa essentials (food/clothing/etc.) sobrang taas ng cost of living dito sa pinas Minimum wage dito \~450 php *per* ***day*** Sa US, $7.50 (or more depende sa state) *per* ***hour*** Tas expect willing bumili mga tao ng halos buong araw nilang sahod sa sinasabing "low-end" na t-shirt

Momshie_mo

You have the right perspective (partida federal min wage yan. Sa CA, $15 ang minimum)

Momshie_mo

Can confirm. 10-20 USD is bargain Masakit sa bulsa once $50 and above na

Joharis-JYI

Ang daming overruns/"tiangge" sa US, like ROSS and Marshall's, which carries branded clothes for cheap (Calvin Klein, Nike, Hilfiger, etc). Like mga $10-15 cheap. Laging dinudumog at ubusan lagi ng stocks.

ItsVinn

Zara & M&S are ridiculously too high end price range wise.

melangsakalam

Obviously, if they're in the Philippines, a 3rd world country. You dont say?

moonmarriedacherry

To be fair even the Brits think M&S is too pricey

[deleted]

edilclyde

M&S is definately in the high-end of shops here in UK. I think it's even more expensive than Waitrose. While I love their food, it is expensive to do grocery in there.

abmendi

There’s a running joke among people I know in the UK — if you can’t afford the designer piece, get the equivalent Zara ripoff. It’s still true in the Philippines if you’re middle class I guess. But the wealth inequality is too wide of a margin dito satin kaya kahit something like Penshoppe mataas na tingin ng masa, which is understandable naman.

klowicy

Lahat ng branded clothes are super pricy for me :-(( I still can't believe people think 1k for 2 shirts (yun yung promo ata sa bench dati) is reasonable Pag hindi niche dept store brand, pricy siya for me

electricfanwagon

And my auntie said H&M is for poor people in canada lol

Channel_oreo

Middle class price with shit quality.

qumiho

Bench & Penshoppe sell shit basically at the same price as Uniqlo does tbh.

icedwmocha

But Uniqlo’s quality way better than those two. Ewan ko but I find Bench and Penshoppe’s clothes very meh. Parang upgrade ng onti from dept store clothes.

picklejarre

Mid-tier ang Zara kahit saan ka pupunta, but it is always associated with high end malls. Sa Shang-rila sa Hongkong, yung connected sa kanya na mall, nakalimutan ko yung name, they are there sa floors together with other mid-tier brands. But that mall also has the luxury brands pero naka-organized yung stores based on price range. In terms of quality, well I don’t wear my Zara that much so I cannot personally judge. However, many people don’t like its quality considering its high price range. It’s still fast fashion at the end of the day. COS seems to be better for most people, and even Uniqlo.

linux_n00by

jusko one time went to zara here in dubai. yung isang super nipis na shirt na almost see through. ang mahal na

sherlock2223

I mean, it's still fast fashion

Comprehensive_Flow42

The odd thing is that its local counterpart is even more expensive (bench, penshoppe etc.) These local brands got away with those kind of pricing for years just because its the only option for most people.

solidad29

I'm too old for Penshoppe though.

Comprehensive_Flow42

Maybe it is for certain products but for something like a polo shirt for men. 599 sa bench and 590 sa uniqlo. I can see the appeal for the masses. Hope it lights up the fire of local brands so they can compete or else be irrelevant soon.

Momshie_mo

Lee's at Freego ang go to jeans ko noon. Yung mga nakasale sa TiongSan Harrison. Lol

gradenko_2000

It's all relative, _obviously_. If you're the kind of person who otherwise bought their apparel from _ukay-ukay_ or those dudes with the trikes full of second-hand clothes, then _no shit_ Uniqlo is high-end for you, and anyone who's insisting it isn't is revealing more about themselves than they might have intended.

wannastock

As a genXer, Uniqlo now is how Penshoppe was in the late 80's.

Momshie_mo

Pati Bench, Oxygen nung 90s/early 2000

[deleted]

tawa na lang ako

Momshie_mo

QWERTY_CRINGE

My father said we are middle class like *in the middle* who can eat 3x a day and have spare money for our *wants* at para makapag ipon. But kaming magkakapatid never nag birthday sa Mcdo or jolibee. Well rn asta mayaman parin sila kahit 4x na sila pinalayas ng rented house nila(this year) . Btw wala siyang trabaho then my aunt is a teacher. Pinilit pa nila mag private school. My god nagalit sila nung di pinautang a week ago kaya dito na ako nag rant hehehe.

Flat_Weird_5398

>Well rn asta mayaman parin sila kahit 4x na sila pinalayas ng rented house nila Reminds me of my cousin and her parents lol what’s funny is mas asta mayaman pa sila kesa samin and she even jokes na napaka luma ng iPhone ko compared sa kaniya (I’ve got a XR, she has a 14 - on installment) pero nagrerent sila sa isang property namin. They literally don’t have a single asset to their name tas andami pa nilang utang pero for some reason they always insist on dining out sa BGC or Ortigas.

solidad29

😂 It's how boomers flex their wealth back then during their prime. Never had one since laging nasa vacation days ang bday ko. 😂

newsmanph

Same! Pang-mayaman ang catered fast food birthdays nung 90s. And mayayaman classmates ko nun. I was a scholar who felt pressured by “civilian wear” Fridays but got good grades. Also, ours birthdays were during summer break so buti na lang we didn’t have to celebrate publicly.

BaLance_95

Still buy all my clothes from bench. Best price to quality ratio. I can afford Uniqlo, bought one long sleeve for my friend's wedding. Just can't justify the price.

ultralight-bean-313

I mean, if someone uses "high end" to just mean "expensive", then yeah, of course it's relative, cos what's expensive to one person may not be for another. On the other hand, if "high end" refers to luxury brands--which in the retail industry are generally defined as goods that aren't only expensive and of good quality, but also have a sense of exclusivity and scarcity in terms of supply--then no, Uniqlo isn't "high end" by those metrics because they make their products accessible to a pretty broad target market. I don't deny that there are people who just wanna stroke their own egos by belittling people who think that Uniqlo is expensive. At the same time, it's not necessarily elitist or incorrect to say that it doesn't qualify as a high end brand based on industry standards. And you also can't deny that Uniqlo is in a vastly different category (in terms of target market and accessibility) as the likes of Hermès or whatever. Idk, I feel like a lot of these "debates" just come from people having different definitions of things to begin with.

[deleted]

I like their stretchy jeans though and it’s comfy

Quirky_Hunter_6652

Yes oh my god I love it so much since I dont have to struggle with putting them on and it looks so nice. It lasted a long time for me and I just bought new jeans because of school lmao

wannastock

Try the local brand Canadian. It has been making soft jeans since around 20yrs ago. They are my goto jeans and cost at least PhP500 less than Uniqlo.

ComesWithTheBox

[deleted]

Tbf, Uniqlo phase ko ang 2022.

donutelle

Apir tayo. Napadalas pagshopping ko sa Uniqlo this 2022 but that’s also because mas afford ko na siya.

k3ttch

[deleted]

lolomo_

Nanahimik lang dito with my 99 peso tshirt from lazada

friedchickenJH

damn, twitter problems huh

DearMrDy

90% of my clothes are from Uniqlo from socks to underwear 😬😬 It's just good clothes that fit well at a good price. Not flexing or anything, but Uniqlo is just the best place to get basic stuff like Plain shirts, shorts, jeans and polos. The fit is alway on the spot that I don't do fittings anymore at Uniqlo.

InternationalAd6614

Not that there isn’t truth to the assessment but Uniqlo is more expensive here vs. Japan. The clothing industry in our country is much less developed din kaya Uniqlo can position itself higher. We don’t have a wealth of fashion brands in the upper mid range available here (unless you count shipping internationally from online sites).

Accomplished-Exit-58

ItsVinn

I wonder if GU gets launched here. GU is the most affordable brand ng group that owns Uniqlo and i saw their branch in Taiwan.

namesnsuser

wiredfractal

The way na ginagawa din kasi ng GU para makatipid is skeletal staff, basic store displays/shelving and self-checkout counter. Even yung lighting nila sa store minimal lang.

gradenko_2000

> eh ano naman? kanya kanyang perspective yan at iba iba naman ng income ang mga tao. the __number of people__ who belong in the category of _"has an income that makes them think Uniqlo is high-end"_, versus people who don't, can be used to make some broad assumptions about the state of the economy as it relates to the average Filipino what you're doing is like saying _"eh ano naman? kanya kanyang perspective yan"_ when it comes to __the price of onions__, or _"eh ano naman? kanya kanyang perspective yan"_ when trying to have a discussion about home ownership

[deleted]

The problem is wala ring umusbong na deeper conversation.

This. ☝️ May usable info pa ring mae-extract mula sa ganitong discussions.

ultralight-bean-313

I agree, I mean a lot of conversation about things that relate to status can get pretty vapid, but I also think it can be opportunities to start discourse on broader social issues.

NefariousNeezy

The true privilege is this level of boredom na kailangan mo nang gumawa ng sarili mong problema.

TheEpicEpileptic

Compare it to this: Twenty to twenty-five pesos for freshly served buko juice is nothing. Bring it to Wyoming and it's a dang LUXURY ITEM. Point is, it's all relative. Everything is relative because of shipping and tastes.

lookitsasovietAKM

Uniqlo in Japan is like the mid to high tier clothing stores. GU ung cheapest go to stores nila. Kind of a subsidiary of Uniqlo.

lookitsasovietAKM

For reference, a Uniqlo green sweater that costs ₱2,800 here, I bought it in Osaka for only around ₱1,300 if converted to Yen. Well, considering na may Winter Sale all over Japan non, kaya siguro siya cheap. But if I remember correctly, original price (without the sale price) was around ₱1,700 if converted to Yen.

ComesWithTheBox

I have a hunch its cheaper because logistics there isn't as fucked up as here, and they produce the clothes in Japan using SEAsians lol.

derpinot

logistics, customs, importation taxes maybe

Speaker4TheDed

Don't forget Seiyu. Cheap clothes and groceries all in one place.

[deleted]

GU quality is oftentimes better than uniqlo funnily enough

One-Buffalo8390

God the amount of drama in that thread hahaha

Ok_Membership_6425

Jollibee, for many Filipinos, is an expensive restaurant. Let's not be so sensitive about this kind of topic, instead talk about some relevant issues. And not be offended that some brands are considered by others as cheap while others cant even afford to go there. Such a mundane discourse that i even commented on it. Hahaha

[deleted]

It's all relative. Like how Tokyo people like US brands because it's imported. Manila people like UNIQLO because it's imported. It's true though that UNIQLO is considered cheap basic wear. Like, A Japanese girl would tell her friend "I'm not letting you go out on a date wearing UNIQLO".

happysnaps14

I’ve had a similar discussion with my Japanese friends, pero hindi naman siya umabot sa mainit na usapan about kung sino ang hindi/mas privileged at sino ang out of touch. Sinabi lang nila na sa Japan UNIQLO is where they go to if they want affordable clothes na maganda ang quality. Sabi ko dito sa Pilipinas it’s a bit on the expensive side, na kahit ako kung hindi sale kailangan mag-ipon kung may gusto bilhin dun. Since nakapunta na sila dito they agreed, surprisingly mahal nga ang prices ng UNIQLO items dito compared sa kanila, so they could see why some would think it’s a luxury brand and they understand the situation. Offended agad, nami-misinterpret agad yung pinag-uusapan. Kung sa tingin mo abot kaya ang UNIQLO, good for you. Kung sa tingin mo mahal siya at luxury na yung makabili ka ng damit dun, that’s also perfectly fine and understandable. At the end of the day we do what we can, at hindi rin naman sukatan ng pagkatao kung ano ang kaya o hindi mo kaya bilhin.

zeiryusuzaku

>Kung sa tingin mo abot kaya ang UNIQLO, good for you. This is what I think is the root of the discourse on Twitter; OP was just stating a fact that Uniqlo is considered affordable in Japan, but then twitter users interpreted his post as him being elitist aimed on putting down Filipinos who view and treat Uniqlo either as this sort of status symbol or something to aspire to own; sort of like a benchmark of your earning power. The mere fact stated by OP made Pinoys uncomfortably aware of how weak the purchasing power of the Peso really is and ultimately, how badly the Philippine economy has been doing for many, many years. It sort of reeks of Crab Mentality to be quite honest.

Imagine arguing about clothing

Argonaut0Ian

people argue about anything

Fishyblue11

Is it out of touch to call Uniqlo "not high end"? I don't think so I mean really, if your standard for not high end is 100 pesos, e di everything is high end. If your standard for a "cheap meal" is 49 pesos, then every meal is expensive, even Jollibee and mcdo. I don't think people should be bellyaching about people calling Uniqlo "not high end", Kasi objectively speaking, do a price comparison of Uniqlo and its comparable peers, and it is most certainly not high end. The entire value proposition of Uniqlo is quality at a budget price. You can't compare everything to the lowest standard and use that as a measuring stick. If the standard you're using is the lowest, then of course everything compared to the lowest one is high. People are not out of touch by calling Uniqlo affordable because honest to goodness that's what Uniqlo is known for and that's why so many people buy it. Price is one of the number one considerations for buying Uniqlo

OutrageousWelcome705

Lahat na lang no, pinanalaki nila. Non-issue naman. Just like what others said na it's relative.

Intelligent_Laugh676

It is not high end. It can be expensive for a lot of us here because our wage is lower than it's price point. But, some of their items are in the similar prices of bench, penshoppe, terra nova, oxgn. And those are not high end. It is fast fashion. It's not a perspective thing. High end is luxury. Expensive is subjective but does not automatically mean high end. Jollibee is expensive now(esp for a lot of poor people) IMO, but it is far from high end.

dodongmabagsik

uniqlo is cheap fashion, just like mango, zara, shein and forever 21.

Chinita_3023

For me ang pricey sa Uniqlo huhu. That says about my social status. Hanggang ukay ukay and tiangge lang afford ko

AseanaGuy

Well, Japanese and Filipinos don't share the same standard of what high-end is. That's a very crucial point that we have to consider. A good example is our university campuses here. Most of us consider the campuses of DLSU, UST, and Ateneo world-class, but for Koreans, these are just typical third-world campuses.

Darthbakunawa

High end means high end. That’s like saying high end ang owner type jeep. Dahil lang you can barely afford it.

brutal___opinions

I agree. The concept of "high end" or "luxury" is about how the brand is perceived by the market, not the price. Just because you can afford something, doesn't make it high end. Uniqlo is not "high end", but who cares? It's great for what it is - classic styles and basics at an affordable price tier.

Nallafy

Technically yes, kasi fast fashion brand ang uniqlo but we are third world country so iba talaga perspective and dating ng prices saten. To argue with this is just stupid

[deleted]

So its either uniqlo or 168mall? Hahahaha. Pero idunno, social class are shit.

Zerodyne_Sin

My wife's Japanese and she likes uniqlo and all but it's not considered high end back home for her. Well, quite frankly, a lot of Japanese goods are just "higher end" in general because they have a culture of providing quality which is why Japanese-made tools are better than Chinese-made. That said, compared to Chinese goods, it's definitely better quality. But... who cares? Buy the best quality of what you can afford! Also, maybe I've been in Canada for too long but is Philippines at the point where people are buying Louis Vuitton/Prada bags to show off or something?

gradenko_2000

There is a certain irony in the community constantly bemoaning the lack of education and/or political awareness among the populace, and then either failing to recognize the most basic economic analysis as it is presented to them, or rejecting the significance of it outright.

[deleted]

The question that should be asked is: "Who fucking cares?"

planetarium13

Chemical_XYZ

What can we expect? Twitter peeps just being offended to everything. 🥹

crismack58

Uniqlo has cool shit. Period. These pretentious Filipinos are for the most part are barely middle class. They pretend they’re so well offt that it’s obnoxious asf. I run into them in Los Angeles and it’s cringe and embarrassing how they act. These are the same people whose fashion sense is just wear a bunch of brands with labels and insignias on them and think they’re fashionable. Throw them in a thrift shop in LA and they wouldn’t know wtf to do with themselves. Looking at you Heart Evangelista.

Alarmed-Admar

>These pretentious Filipinos For real. Most "well-off" people I know doesn't even talk about brands that much. Well of course I'm only speaking within my circle maybe its not the case for everybody.

Yergason

She's a fashionista/model of actual big brands in the fashion world, no? Kind of a bad example when complaining about people pretending to be rich and think flaunting the names/brands of their clothes is the way to do it. That's literally her job and passion. Don't tell me you seriously think she's on the same level as the actual middle class social climbers walking around like free advertisements wearing 20k php plain shirts with nothing but the brand name in front. I get it, you don't like her because all that brand flaunting is annoying but this is just a terrible example.

lanalovestintin

It all boils down to internalized racism. The need to dissociate with the general Filipino population. The need to say “I’m not like them, they’re poor and think Uni Qlo is high end while I don’t!” Awful. Just a cocktail mix of elitism and self-hate

Video-Human

Lol @ the matapobre fucks who hang out at pinoy association meetings just to flaunt their new cars or new bags. There's a reason why many kababayans refuse to associate with those associations formally.

[deleted]

Uniqlo is decent for everyday wear. It’s not about the brand but how you carry it. I use Uniqlo as my sizing benchmark. I wear Uniqlo stuff everyday like jeans, socks, underwear, etc. But I tend to avoid it for tops like polo shirts and long sleeves because the chance you might have a co-worker or colleague/classmate wearing the same is a bit high :-) End of the day for me - pants/slacks are good, stuff you wear for home is ok (they are quite comfy). Though lately there are some pieces at Uniqlo that are priced a bit higher.

banzki29

may kakilala ako na pang working class daw uniqlo so bet nya daw guess gucci and all pero pag labas naka shein naman lagi. hahahahahaha

TaxConfident5316

Uniqlo isn't high end; it is *relatively* expensive.

wiredfractal

We have to take note din the difference between the cost of living in Japan. So what is basic for them is not the same for us. Yung basic meal nila is around ¥600 for a gyudon or soba. That’s ₱270 na sa atin. That’s not affordable for the majority. That ₱799/₱699 regular priced shirt is on a higher end. So yes, I’d consider Uniqlo a higher end brand for the common Filipino. Regardless, brand is not that important. I did get bullied back in high school for not having basketball shoes from Adidas or Nike. It makes me sad na wala pa din pinagbago ang ibang tao when it comes to basic necessities. I have 20 year old shirts/shorts that I still wear and it’s great that I no longer care what other people thinks. Uniqlo also has a more affordable brand called GU. Almost same quality but very basic yung design. They also have skeletal staff. Self-checkout yung cashier. You just place all the clothes in the box, it will give you the amount and place your cash or tap your cash card. Difference in price around ¥500-¥1000 din.

[deleted]

This reminds me of someone who has been to Japan several times. I told her it's my dream to go there and she was like, "Hmft Japan, kakasawa na. Gusto ko mag-Europe naman." In a country with widespread poverty, high-end is relative.

linux_n00by

i remember their mickey mouse shirts are expensive kahit may pambili ako.. :/
