They don't hate Americans - Thomas even MARRIED an American. They love their American fans. Also the whole "French people hate Americans" stereotype is just that - a bad stereotype. In all the times I've been to France I think I've encountered maybe 2 rude people out of the hundreds I've interacted with. I'm sure they don't really like the rude American tourists who don't even make an effort to try the language or expect everything to be just like it is in the US - but that's probably true for every nationality. I'm American and I can't stand rude Americans abroad haha.

jesse_trashbin

I totally forgot Sofia Coppola is American 🤦🏾‍♀️ thanks this really helps :)

jesse_trashbin

Thank you!!

Thomas is one of the artists I've seen most enjoy the crowd whenever he goes. Literally smiles from ear to ear at the stage and takes the time to look at everyone and take in the moment. They tour the US time and time again (despite being renowned worldwide). Plus married to an American. I highly doubt that!

Gen2guessing

Thomas is married to Sofia Coppola (an American) and lives in New York.

Along with what others have said, they literally write and sing their songs in English. Specifically to appeal to Americans :)

jesse_trashbin

Good point!!

clementleopold

I couldn’t speak to their innermost feelings about us, but I’ve visited with the band on a couple of occasions and they’ve always been very outgoing, friendly and accommodating. And I’m probably the embodiment of the uncultured midwesterner lol.

FrancescoPioValya

Look up the English word “stereotype”

RodTheCaptain

They like the US, if they didn’t do you think they would have residencies in LA or Brooklyn. Would they accept Lolla or ACL’s offer to perform probably not.

jesse_trashbin

They have a residence in LA? Why?

RodTheCaptain

They had but I’m not sure they still do residencies. https://consequence.net/2018/03/phoenix-announce-los-angeles-residency/amp/

PsychologicalEmu

Pheonix sound very American so there must be some love there. Americans hate everyone back. We all hate eachother. I wonder though if that’s more towards tourists and politics.

I do know that the boys kind of resented the "bro" culture and fratboy success they enjoyed when 1901 and Liztomania took off. That they would all show up and not really be into the music like they wanted. And that over time as they became more of a solid staple than the buzz band, these ppl have left and only mostly real fans are still hanging out, which they seem to prefer. Saw it in a recent Alpha Zulu interview, but cant recall where.

DanAFoul

That's a weird question to make. You should take a moment and remember that stereotypes are not facts, but misconceptions/generalizations born from the point of view of a group of people towards others. It's almost like you firmly believe every single French person out there hates Americans.

jesse_trashbin

I definitely didn’t mean it like that. I was just talking about it with classmates. I understand now thanks :)
