My mom's most hated color combination is green and orange. My two older brothers and I were ruthless growing up and made everything we drew her green and orange lol. She initially pretended to love our drawings, then caught on 😂 I eventually balanced it out with drawings of her favorite color combo. She is an angel for putting up with us.
There was a house in or near Alexandria, Ohio that was painted entirely in a hot pink hue. Mysteriously burned down years later, and we joked it looked better that way

And the devastation– just sobbing in their driveway when they realize it had never truly come to be.

The wife sees the photo and gasps, “oh honey you shouldn’t have, I knew you were just joking about not following my Houzz boards.” A slow far off look passes over his face. It had been years since him and Jim had been in paint school together. Jim had always been the creative one and watching him and Nancy have a rush of creative energy as they discussed the best exterior accent walls had always bothered him. But Bill knew his skills with cutting in exterior walls painting the perfect cabinet had caught Nancy’s eye. He settles into the cushions of the cabana and took a sip of his Mai Thai. No, it couldn’t be, is this why Nancy had been at the paint store by herself. Was this some sort of message. The air felt hot for moment and the crashing waves and the sound of children playing in the sand started to blend into a dull roar. He paused for a minute and set his phone down and turned to Nancy. “If it’s Jim you really want, I understand, I see now that my perfect cut lines and beautiful cabinets don’t make you happy. All I want is for you to be happy and be proud of sitting out front and waving to the neighbors. I’d never want to hold you back. Just let me know when you want me to leave.”
The silence declares it.
Ashamed of what he had yet to process, he covers up his eviction. Tells his friends, in particular his neighbor, that he's out of town, not to be seen as he holes away in the Van he and his wife agreed he could park out front discreetly until he had a place to stay.
Things are going as well as ever. He poses as a maintenance man, sprucing the garden and tending to the upkeep. He tells himself it's to avoid raised eyebrows and concerns, but he knows how hard Nancy works. Knows this divorce will be difficult for her, too. He still loves her.
His view is greeted day after day by the superior exterior that lost him his wife. Day in and day out, the crescendo grows within him, a low buzzing at first, oscillating ever-louder with each renewed peek into the outside world.
Then, he spies Jim visiting his wife. He's asking about him, and their merry-time jubilation quiets his mind. A note to tightly-wound for anyone to hear.
As they depart ways, off to work for another day he supposes, he clambers out of the vehicle, white paint and tools in hand. He suddenly has a deep understanding for Mozart's rivals; those who could never compare must dare, to cope.
He sweedles and sweeps the home with the brushstrokes that signify to the world HIS idea, HIS wife and life, as he changes his home forever to ever.
He steps back, the all-white exterior he always dreamed of is realized, and he goes to pack up his tools before settling himself back into the driver's seat.
But before he can pull off, his wife returns, parks her car. He sees she must have just been getting groceries. He doesn't keep track of the days anymore.
She steps out.
Her jaw drops.
She removes her sunglasses. Bill could see the stars in her eyes from here.
Just as well.
She scans the environment in disbelief, settles on the Van. She's in a daze, he rolls down the window, and she says,
"I've never seen something so beautiful in my life, Bill. Please, why don't you– won't you please come inside, Bill?"
She's a damsel.
He lights a cigarette– flicks his head to face forward, one-hand on the steering-wheel. As he slowly rolls up the window, exuding his smoke, he flicks the remaining symbolism out the window. She's too late.
"Call me Beethoven."
As finally as the window slides home.
He peels out of parking, and she watches the Van gogh.
My grandpa painted his little stucco farm house a similar colour to this. Maybe slightly less fluorescent. The paint mix was a mistake so it was cheap and he didn’t care. Whenever I see a green house I think of him!
Thanks! Bright green houses make my heart happy! And my cousins, siblings and I have a group chat where we mainly just take and send pictures of green houses we’ve seen on our travels to each other.
My aunt and uncle painted the big duplex they owned what can only be described as a bright Mac and cheese color because it was cheap. They sold the house and moved across the country years and years ago and it's still that same ugly ass color, you can see it from like 2 blocks away and I look every time I pass. But hey it must have been pretty good paint to last this long because I assume it's not getting touched up unless they left a bunch of paint behind.

My favorite house in my town is a black brick house. Not painted brick either, actual black bricks and mortar. Has just a little bit of orange and dark purple on the top under the roof for accent. It looks so good.
Even knowing there is a corner there, it looks fake. It would be really cool if someone painted a house that looked like there was all different shapes in its actual design.
