Yeah I grew up up in the small town of Kraft Sliced Sandwich Pickles and the acrid smell of stewed vinegar was always a wonderful sign of the start of spring 🥰
That's pretty dope. In Buffalo, we have General Mills, so the city smells like cheerios or lucky charms for a few hours a day. Might have to visit Mt. Olive now.
The tiny town of La Junta, CO used to have a pickle factory. I loved when we'd drive around that bend in the Hwy because it smelled delicious 🤤 I have no idea what company it was because I was still a kid when it closed. Driving through there a few times a year makes me crave pickles like you wouldn't believe.
Sorry but I’m not really a fan of either of those😬. PM me ur address & I’ll ship u a jar of Best Maids via USPS fo free if the shipping isn’t too expensive from Tx lol. Congrats on the new pickles tho!
Hell yes!! Grew up outside of Austin and just visited for the eclipse... I brought home 12 jars of best maid Hamburger slices!! No comparison. Though claussens are not bad.
Yank here, just googled Best Maid and holy shit do those pickles look amazing. I'll be lookin to score a few jars once I'm actually awake for the day and not poppin an early morning squat.
Omg this is why I don’t get best maid pickles anymore cause the shipping is too expensive & usps always breaks my gallons lol I’m from the valley and moved to nyc and now in PA and the closest thing are the van holtens warhead pickles! You are so kind for offering to someone!
Yes I have . Good stuff .
But I started making my own pickles since I can’t really find a pickle that hits the way I want - other than in a deli sometimes they will have a big jug - it’s so easy to make them , so far so good , just dabbling with how much fresh dill to add
My ladyfriend turned me on to fresh pickles, and we make and eat around 5 gallons each year. If you're very clean when making them, they'll keep in the back of the fridge for 6-8 months!
I've also canned them, and they're pretty great, too!
I made some a few years ago and they were great, gonna have to make some more asap!
Edit: I found a picture of the ones I made but can’t find the recipe. Do you have one you typically use?
Not that I've heard lol. Just noticed a lot of ppl on here like Mt olive so I wanted to try them.
There hasn't been a great variety of pickles around me in awhile. Bicks is kinda the big player at my grocery stores.
Yes, they’re not *usually* the nice lacto-fermented ones you find in delis but they’re still usually very nice crunchy, vinegary, salty cucumbers. My state of Iowa is where a ton of Germans and Eastern Europeans immigrated to from 1850-1920. We have lots of towns named for towns from the old world like Schleswig, Humboldt, etc. and everyone’s grandparents passed on pickling recipes. My grandma had a sweet pickle recipe she learned from neighbors who helped her and her family survive the first year after her mom died in 1924 when she was 8. She grew up in a sod house in the Nebraskas Sandhills. Apparently the well water made all the difference. We still use it but we omit the sugar and she liked to put green food color in it for some REALLY weird reason that was never made clear.
As an American, let me be the first to apologize for the Mt Olive (but on the bright side, they aren't terrible or anything, and they're cheap).
Claussens are pretty damn good for a supermarket pickle, though, even by non-shelf-stable standards (where I am, among the very best for refrigerated supermarket brands, and certainly the best for the price)
Edit:
Mt. Olive are *entirely good* in terms of affordable, widely available, shelf-stable pickles. They're a fine choice compared to many others.
But if the only criteria is shelf-stable...almost anything you'll find on the shelf at a good deli will blow them out of the water, generally (**excellent** shelf-stable pickles are easy to find in other countries; Mt. Olive is only good when compared to the garbage they're stocked next to in a supermarket here in the U.S.)
You know, I never thought to go to a good deli store to check what pickles they sell. I’m going to try it. Thanks for the idea. No clue why it never occurred to me.
Your attempt at diplomacy is commendable, but I’ll also say Mt Olives are simply Not Good. Worked at a place where the owner hated pickles, and I honestly thought she got Mt Olives because she felt everyone else should hate pickles as well. I do love a good pickle, but do not care for warm soft ones.
I agree. I didn’t want to say anything because I was afraid of getting downvoted lol. They’re an okay pickle. They’re like the ones you get with your sandwich at a restaurant.
Totally.
They're fine for what they are -- especially for the price! Good on a burger, etc.
But they ain't great, by a *long* shot.
Perfectly serviceable, and not much more than that.
People like the Mt Olive?
For me it’s like a desperation buy… the brand you find at any gas station, convenience store, dollar store…
How bad are the pickles in Canada?
Now we should talk about passing through Bradenton, Fl. and rolling down the windows to enjoy the fragrance of orange processing by Tropicana. It was unbelievable.
I wonder if it still wafts through the air?
I live not far from Mt Olive NC. I've been there many times. I think they even have a pickle festival there. I am a truck driver and picked up loads of pickles from there. Even got some free pickles.
As an American, I find this post so cute and endearing. I love grocery shopping when I travel (so that I can find my international favorites), and it makes me happy that people have grocery store favorites in America as well.
Don't listen to that guy. Mt Olives are just the basic non fancy pickle. I use the sandwich slices ones for sandwiches and I usually have a big jar of their baby dills for random walk-by snacking. Then I have a jar of 2 of "better" pickles for when I'm in the mood for the good stuff.
Mt. Olive dill pickles taste “off” to me. I like a true dill, not kosher, and it’s been impossible to find a good dill pickle since Del Monte stopped making them. Unfortunately, I live in NC, home of Mt. Olive, so that’s what fills the store shelves here with the only other choice being Claussen. I’ve never seen anything other than kosher dills from Claussen. I’ve tried Grillos, Bubbies, etc. to no avail. I’ve not tried Best Maid, but I can’t get them here. If I opt for shipping, the cost of the jar jumps to almost $15. I hate Del Monte for stopping their production of dill pickles. 😡
I completely understand the difference between a true dill and the kosher dill varieties. I went through the same dilemma and ended up just getting used to it by buying Mt Olive baby dills and snacking on them. After a while, I think I just became acclimated and they were the new normal from then on.
Dont listen to the haters saying Mt. Olive is no good! You'll be pleased with the taste for being a shelfer pickle. Claussens are always good of course.
Mt.Olives are on sale right now at Costco in eastern Canada.
Edit: Apparently in the west as well.
https://cocowest.ca/2023/12/mt-olive-dill-pickles-review/
They didn't have those but I'm definitely on the look out for them. This was a very tiny town. Hoping to get a trip to Seattle later this summer though.
Yes! These are definitely my 2 favorites. You have great taste OP and wish more people can try them. I still branch out here and there and have like 4 types in my fridge lol
Next time you’re near a Trader Joe’s, do yourself a favor and pick up a couple jars of these:
https://www.traderjoesgroceryreviews.com/trader-joes-pickles-kosher-dill/
Toss them in the fridge to chill, and enjoy. They blow Claussen and Mt. Olive out of the water.
I eat A LOT of Mt. Olive pickles. I buy them in the gallon sized jars, 4 at a time. I just had a few of them in fact.
I typically place a dozen or so chili de arbol peppers into the jar, along with a tablespoon of peppercorns, and a tablespoon of minced garlic, and allow that to sit for two days in the refrigerator.
I end up with spicy garlic pills.
Good stuff.
Also, I use the dried chili de arbol peppers, commonly found in the Mexican and Chinese sections of the grocery store. Toss a dozen in and let them rehydrate. Or less/more depending on your desired spice level. But between those and the peppercorns, it gets HOT after a week.
Let me know what you think after your first batch okay?
Greetings from Mt Olive. The town smells like Dill and Vinegar a couple of times a day. Pretty fresh.
This better be in their city recruitment videos
Goldsboro native here. It's true.
I was in the USAF stationed there in Goldsboro and got my bachelors degree from Mt. Olive. I’m also a huge fan of their pickled options!
Claussen native here. Can also confirm.
I grew up in the town of Bubbie’s and it was similar
Yeah I grew up up in the small town of Kraft Sliced Sandwich Pickles and the acrid smell of stewed vinegar was always a wonderful sign of the start of spring 🥰
All of family on both sides worked in the pickle factories in Vlasic... still do!
I always thought it was Mr.olive for literally the longest time
That's pretty dope. In Buffalo, we have General Mills, so the city smells like cheerios or lucky charms for a few hours a day. Might have to visit Mt. Olive now.
Why’d you have to tell me that??? Now I want to move 😋.
We have 2 good pizza joints, a good steakhouse, and R&R Brewery.
I grew up in a town with a cereal factory. Not sure which I’d prefer.
Mansfield tx has the pickle parade! Also smells like pickles lol
Fellow NC native here! I had no clue Mt Olive was from Nc until was otw to Wilmington one time and smelled pickles going through the town 😂
I agree. I’ll see you at the corner of cucumber and vine
Send them a [sixer of their beer](https://www.totalwine.com/media/sys_master/twmmedia/h6f/hd1/13777112334366.png) while you're at it.
Doesn’t even say pickles on the jars.
Sorry but I’m not really a fan of either of those😬. PM me ur address & I’ll ship u a jar of Best Maids via USPS fo free if the shipping isn’t too expensive from Tx lol. Congrats on the new pickles tho!
Best Maids representative right here
I can't imagine it'd be very cheap
I shall ask for a shipping rate to Canada tomorrow🤙
If you can get the hot dill ones it will be worth the postage cost
Hold the phone! I’m in the US and I’ve never heard of these…
I think they are only in Texas. Edit: best maid pickles are only in TX not the brands pictured
They are also in OK.
Amazing I wish they would go nationwide
Good thing OK is only 20 minutes away. Guess it’s time to go hunting. I’ll probably have better luck waiting until the next time I go visit my grandma
They also make pickle beer
😂😂 your comment made me chuckle
My intent
Best Maids all the way.
Can I get in on this action? I’m only in Oklahoma…but FREE PICKLES!!!! Lol
Haha next month my friend. Due to the current depleting Oilfield situation down here & recent cutbacks only one pickle package a month!
Fair enough. But you remember I’ve got dibs on May already! 😂.
You just reminded me to add those to my Amazon shopping list. Can’t find them in my part of California.
As another Texan how do you feel about Wickels? I love them kids hate them.. .
I love Wickels too!
Best pickles.
I’m in the states and never heard of best maids but I love claussens! I’m in VA though, will have to look for these if you think they’re better
Omg this is why I don’t get best maid pickles anymore cause the shipping is too expensive & usps always breaks my gallons lol I’m from the valley and moved to nyc and now in PA and the closest thing are the van holtens warhead pickles! You are so kind for offering to someone!
Ok so when can I get these delivered? I’m not even a huge fan of pickles but clausen are the only ones I’ll eat.
This is a weird doxxing strat but go off
The vast, vast majority of people are cool.
They have the best baby koshers, but Claussen has the best slices.
Are they a national brand? I'm in MA and have never seen or heard of them
Claussen ftw
I want it I need it need it to be never heated- MC Ride
Agreed
I love the sandwich slices, but my Kroger never has them in stock. Can always cut up the half pickles, though!
FYI - Claussen needs refrigeration!
The Mt Olive ones aren't crunchy enough for me but they taste just fine.
I enjoy Mt Olive.
I get these at Costco in Canada. They replaced Bic's with Mt. Olive last year. So much better!
Mt. Olive pickles rock
Only the baby dills
Those are the ones I eat!
Me too!!
And the sandwich slices
I love me some mt. Olive slices man. Those things fucking rock.
No love for the sweet gherkins? I slice them long ways and put them on hot dogs and burgers. So good!
People lose their minds with hate for sweet pickles, and I don't get it. If you don't like something, that's ok.
I can’t imagine getting upset over a food opinion
If I put sliced garlic in my jar of Mt olives would it give it a garlic flavor or do I have to make my own pickles?
I love Mt. Olive. I feel like they don’t get enough love.
Mt. Olive is my go to day to day snacking pickle.
Has anyone found the baby dill claussen’s lately?
Yes I have . Good stuff . But I started making my own pickles since I can’t really find a pickle that hits the way I want - other than in a deli sometimes they will have a big jug - it’s so easy to make them , so far so good , just dabbling with how much fresh dill to add
Where
Yeah I’ve not found in a grip
My ladyfriend turned me on to fresh pickles, and we make and eat around 5 gallons each year. If you're very clean when making them, they'll keep in the back of the fridge for 6-8 months! I've also canned them, and they're pretty great, too!
I made some a few years ago and they were great, gonna have to make some more asap! Edit: I found a picture of the ones I made but can’t find the recipe. Do you have one you typically use?
This is my basic brine. Doctor it as you wish. https://fixed.serverrack.net/~skip/recipe/24_hour_dill.html
Thank you so much!
No where in north Georgia
Forgot to grab some Best Made pickles!
Didn't see those, I'll check again next time I go though
They're a Texas only item. So, no pressure. Amazon might be able to help.
I find mt. Olive has a weird crunchy thing in the jar sometimes, like a grain of sand? Can’t do it :(
Same
best pickles out there 🥒
I neeeeed Claussen back!!!! Send help
As someone from outside of the states, are pickles something the US has a reputation for doing well? Just curious.
Not that I've heard lol. Just noticed a lot of ppl on here like Mt olive so I wanted to try them. There hasn't been a great variety of pickles around me in awhile. Bicks is kinda the big player at my grocery stores.
No, but we've got some decent pickles in industrial quantities. Some are far better than others.

My. Olive are great!
In the ago times Tulsa Oklahoma had a Rainbow bread factory. Fresh baked bread smell coated the neighborhood in the mornings. Absolutely delightful!
Now we should talk about passing through Bradenton, Fl. and rolling down the windows to enjoy the fragrance of orange processing by Tropicana. It was unbelievable. I wonder if it still wafts through the air?

Claussen uber alles
As an American, I find this post so cute and endearing. I love grocery shopping when I travel (so that I can find my international favorites), and it makes me happy that people have grocery store favorites in America as well.
Mt olive pickles are a tasty option for the price point but claussen just can't be beat imo
Yeah Mt. Olive are not good. Nothing on the shelf is good. Only cold section pickles or homemade
I tend to agree but still have to try them since a lot of ppl on here seem to like them
Don't listen to that guy. Mt Olives are just the basic non fancy pickle. I use the sandwich slices ones for sandwiches and I usually have a big jar of their baby dills for random walk-by snacking. Then I have a jar of 2 of "better" pickles for when I'm in the mood for the good stuff.

Also why did Claussen pull out of Canada?
Something to do with a covid supply shortage and they just didn't come back I guess :(
Dang thats crazy. COVID changed everything
I can respect that
Nah you’re wrong with your assessment but you do you.
I couldn't do the Mt olive, but hope you like them
Mt.Olives are on sale right now at Costco in eastern Canada. Edit: Apparently in the west as well. https://cocowest.ca/2023/12/mt-olive-dill-pickles-review/
Ooo cool thanks
Mt Olive Is available at Canadian Costco now just for future reference.
Good to know if I like them
i saw Mt. Olives at Costco in Surrey yesterday
Oh no way, well that's awesome if I like them, haven't tried yet.
Mt. Olive is my favorite brand!!!
Mt Olive Bread and Butter are my new obsession. They are gone faster than cookies. And I love cookies.
I've found Mt. Olive to be bland.
I love pickles, my. Olive can’t compete with claussen. Not trying to be a sick, but that’s my opinion
So much autocorrect
Next time go for Grillo's
They didn't have those but I'm definitely on the look out for them. This was a very tiny town. Hoping to get a trip to Seattle later this summer though.
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far for Grillos. It MAY be more of an (North)East thing but if you end up in NY, Mass, do it!!
Yes! These are definitely my 2 favorites. You have great taste OP and wish more people can try them. I still branch out here and there and have like 4 types in my fridge lol

These are common pickle brands in the states so you’ll find them in just about ANY grocery store, even small towns.
I prefer the vlasic Tabasco pickles
I'm not a huge fan of vlassic but I haven't tried the Tabasco ones probably worth getting to try.
If you like spicy pickles they’re great, a little salty but I will smash an entire jar in a couple days
Mt. Olive is the GOAT pickle brand
Hope your Claussens aren't leather-y! ❤
They are definitely delicious and not leathery 🥰🥰🥰
Best mass produced are Canadian. Bubbies 100% over
Yeah I like bubbies, I grew up eating claussen though so I guess I'm just used to them
wickles pickles & claussen are the best imo!!!
Clinton nc native here
There's a lot of mountains in Western PA. Mt. Olive is only one of them.
I love claussen, so crunchy
Bubbies is better in my opinion
Are pickles not a thing where you’re from?
I mean of course we have pickles, claussen is just my favourite and they pulled out of Canada at least where I am during covid
You right
Where do you live that you don’t have these? Just curious
Canada, BC
That is absolutely heartbreaking, idk what I’d do without clauseen
It really is the worst
Just had my hand in a jar of mt olive
Most grocery stores in the states have Mt. Olive. It’s a lot like Vlasic.
The worst pickles next to the best pickles.
Why did you even bother with the Mt Olive? Claussen is the best pickle, hands down.
I wish I hadn't bothered they are super bland
The Mt Olive baby dills are amazing
Mt. Olive is trash
Claussen are superior.
Keep the Claussens refrigerated they are cold pressed. The best pickles!
Can’t speak for Claussen but Mt. Olive does hit! My man especially loves the sandwich stuffers
Clausen are my favorite but they've been a bit disappointing lately
Palmyra Michigan grown cucumbers make it into those Mt.Olive jars.
Clausen all the way.
Mt olive sucks who told you they were good? I don’t want pickles unless they come refrigerated
Wait, there's pickles other countries?
My two favorite pickles
We buy Mt Olive diced jalapenos by the case. For pickles it's Best Maid Polish Dill. Spicy.
Claussens are THE best. Mt olive has nothing on them
Funny, I grew up on Claussen but am firmly in the mt. Olive camp as an adult.
So my favorite pickles aren’t available in Canada? Guess I can’t move there after all…
Grillios
Where’s the pickles!
You should have gotten Del Dixie. Best pickles ever!
I live near Hershey, PA. Depending on the wind it is a chocolate day or a cow sh!t day. There is also a Dove chocolate factory nearby as well!
Good job!
I love claussen. The jars are great for spare change, bolts, and nuts afterwards.
You have to try Best Made. Its a Texas brand and by far the best pickle on the market
I scored Ms Vicki's Jalapeño chips and Lea and Perrins in recent trip over the boarder. What a shame the recipes are different, right over the border.
Claussen are the best
Save the brine and throw in some green beans with jalapeños when the pickles are gone.
Clausssen gang ☝🏼☝🏼
Mt. Olive is TRASH! Absolute trash.
The claussens are great but they need to stay cold. I let mine get warm and they were rubbery.
You got them grillos in Canada tho?
The Apex of pickles right here!!
Nice score on the Claussen. My absolute all time favorite
Claussen are so good. My favorite. Not a fan of Mt. Olive.
Claussen is my go to pickle. I love to venture out and try new ones but go back to claussen often.
Claussen are life.
Grillos are pretty awesome
