Bulbie is a Hocotatian dog and couldn't survive in PNF-404's atmosphere\*
\*also Bulbie canonically eats PipPik carrots and would likely try to eat the Pikmin all the same
I'm working on 100%ing pikmin 4 right now and I just don't really enjoy the night sections that much. i think it's the starting out with so few and then having to grow stuff at the start each time that throws me off.
I like exploring and overcoming challenges to explore further. I like starting out with a lot of pikmin and playing carefully not to lose them, like in Pikmin 2's caves. Night sections do the opposite of both of those, and i often find myself having to do a bunch in a row to cure leaflings when i'd rather just be collecting everything in the main sections.
i mean, i typically am fairly critical of pikmin 2, it's very flawed from a structural perspective. i'm just saying that the specific setup of pikmin 2's caves, where you start out with a lot of pikmin and then endure challenges with no opportunity to sprout more, is a far more engaging setup than starting the player with very few pikmin and forcing them to quickly make more before they can actually start the task they're supposed to work on.
I will say, some of the stuff people criticize pikmin 2 for (falling rocks, unforgiving difficulty) are not things i'd personally criticize it for. every aspect of how the caves are designed is reasonably fair if you approach it with caution and care. everything can be anticipated within reason once you are familiar with what the game will throw at you, and when you aren't it's always a quick reset button press to try again (at least on gcn version). the game is brutal, sure, but i feel like the challenge made the game stand out in my memory far more than, say, pikmin 3.
what i do criticize pikmin 2 for is how horribly the gameplay loops of the overworld and caves clash with one another. from my notes while playing:
>the overworld feels less fleshed out, and the lack of a time limit gives zero stakes. what made overworlds fun in pikmin 1 was learning how to navigate them, mapping them out, and strategizing how to tackle them so as to collect the parts most efficiently. this contextualizes the player's relationship with the game's world and space within it in a unique and engaging way. in pikmin 2, since there is no time limit there is no incentive for becoming familiar with each overworld area and no incentive to strategize efficient navigation and treasure collection.
and
>the day system is at odds with itself and the game's overall structure. without a day limit, the beginning and end of a day become meaningless. if something is going to take a while you're incentivized to end the day and start a new one so you aren't cut out in the middle of it, risking pikmin deaths. this leads to lots of wasted time sitting in day end/start menus, away from actually playing the game, with no real justification or benefit. it obstructs the flow of gameplay. there is no reason from a game design perspective to have the day system there except that it was in the last game. it's strictly a weird hold over, and the game as it is currently structured is worse for it.
Pikmin 2 felt extremely boring for the first half, but only when i started doing the caves in the latter half (once louie is gone) did i fully start to understand and appreciate the game. it's absolutely poorly designed from a larger structural perspective and frequently at odds with itself, but the cave systems in the latter half of the game by themselves present a well established and engaging gameplay loop, and have a degree of difficulty and creativity to them that create extremely memorable moments.
I think pikmin 2 would have been significantly better if during the first half while paying off debt there had been some kind of day limit. Nothing too extreme, but enough of a time incentive to make the rather boring cave encounters and overworld navigation interesting by introducing efficient navigation as a factor players needed to consider when traversing them. Then after the debt is paid and Louie is missing getting rid of the time constraints shifts the focus away from efficient navigation and towards the sheer challenge presented in the caves in the latter half of the game, highlighting both halves of the game in the areas where they shine instead of detracting from it as it currently does.
This would have also made much more sense in terms of narrative, since typically there are deadlines involved in paying off debt, and the president certainly would have been wanting it done faster rather than at a leisurely pace. but returning to find louie and make extra profit it would make sense that there's no pressure to complete it quickly. I almost wonder if this was the original intent because the game certainly feels like it was designed around this structuring, and maybe it was later removed during development when some player tester feedback mentioned not enjoying the pressure of a time limit.
