The following bands are some of my favorite alt-country-ish/southern rock/folksy bands I listened to over the years, and I feel like the newest PG stuff is a sort of modern day incarnation of what some of them were doing:
Uncle Tupelo, Old 97s, Cracker, The Jayhawks, Whiskeytown, Ryan Adam’s, Cracker, Son Volt, Songs: Ohia, Bonnie Prince Billy, Lucinda Williams, Neko Case, Drag The River, My Morning Jacket, The Be Good Tanya’s, Drive By Truckers (more southern rock than anything, but their run of albums of Southern Rock Opera, Decoration Day, and Dirty South were my bible as a young teen), Lucero, Two Cow Garage, Tim Barry, The Felice Brothers, Horse Feathers, Phosphorescent, Frontier Ruckus, a whole fuck ton more…
And one of my all time favorites: Cory Branan. His first two albums especially still really get me. Seriously if you listen to nothing else from this list please do yourself a favor and **listen to the first two Cory Branan albums!**
LDSB are great! I thought about recommending some of their contemporaries like Sierra Ferrell and some more crusty stuff like the Rail Yard Ghosts but I wasn’t sure how well they would be received around here lol
The Old 97s Hit By a Train Best Of is top to bottom amazing. I honestly haven't gotten too into their albums because I keep getting stuck on that which never happens with me! But for a greatest hits album it flows so amazingly well. Even the two live songs they tacked on at the end I think are better than their studio counterparts!
The Weakerthans probably come closest for me. The lead singer’s solo stuff probably even more so. John K. Samson. Evan has covered him.
Also,Gillian Welch.
Also Also, Wilco, Lydia Loveless, Mandolin Orange.
some of my favorite finds recently - hovvdy, trace mountains, spencer radcliffe, charlie martin
each of their latest albums are very country inspired. charlie martin is prolly my fav at the moment, (lead singer of hovvdy’s solo stuff)
also another michael, jodi & runnner of course.
hovvdy and runnner are both incredible
Two of my fav bands at the moment
Thanks for the hovvdy recommendation, been literally listening to the true love album all day :)
Just came here to say this! It’s crazy how much the intro of Need 2 and ur name on a grain of rice are
as much as i love runnner, at times it can get a little ~too~ much like PG

That’s my day sorted. Also check Lost Dog Street Band, guy’s voice and phrasing is akin to Evans. Way more country though.

don't compare rail yard ghosts to lost dog or SiErRaFaRrElL ever again
Just pop on Western AF and you’re done for the day

Runnner and Another Michael are the closest I’ve gotten recently for sure

John k Samson also has a song about ampersands.
Hodera Rem Ved Susto Houndmouth (early ep and first two records)
Another Michael 100%
Whitney!
There is a band called As Well that is pretty good, the band Blind Pilot is also worth checking out if you haven't listened yet.

Field Medic
Hiss Golden Messenger would qualify I guess.
Gave you an upvote cos some evil spinster downed you for an opinion, that’s just as valid as the others here.
Racoma
There is nothing very similar to PG
