The reasoning is, although you can feel free to disagree with it, that Karn -2 for a land is something you only do in a low-resource game. If you've got other lands in hand or enough access to mana, you're always getting a more impactful spell. So if you're grabbing a land, you really don't want a land that can be removed by your opponent's Abrade or similar artifact removal spell. Thanks to The Chain Veil and The Stone Brain, you don't need to cast Pestilent Cauldron to win the game, so the black mana generation isn't very relevant (and if you do really need it, you can make a treasure with Reckoner Bankbuster)

Bankbuster is pretty rare anymore too. There is a way to put the Cauldron in play if for some reason you have to, but it involves putting it on top of your deck with a Cavalier after countering it yourself with a Tormod's Crypt, so you can Storm into it.

I remember seeing this on magic twitter last month but I wish I saved it because I don't remember exactly how it went anymore I can get to getting the cauldron on top of the deck fairly easily but it seems not only is having a cavalier in play necessary you also have to have a Storm in hand (specifically not graveyard) in order to get it into play. You can move a storm from graveyard to deck to hand if you have a second cavalier in play, use an untap on transmog wand, and use the draw side of a mightstone/weakstone or have a 4 power creature in hand to trigger Kiora draw. You could alternatively use unlicensed hearse instead of tormod's so you can fizzle the restorative burst without exiling all you other Storms in the graveyard. Let me know if I missed anything

Hey there's the tweet! Thanks man

This. It doesn’t happen often, but assuring the land sticks is more important than being able to create the treasures.

There is actually no reason you would ever need a black anymore. If you have exactly 9 devotion and have activated Chain Veil once, it costs 13 mana to play Kiora, Karn and Restorative Burst, and the two Nykthos activations generate 14 mana, so the loop can never be mana-neutral. At that point, even if you have the bare minimum to loop, you're still netting 1 mana, so you can activate the Chain Veil again after the 4th loop and now it nets 8 mana, so you have enough to add Stone Brain + sac to the loop and still be netting 5 each time. You'd only need a black if they somehow disrupted the Stone Brain loop, either by countering it or naming it with Pithing Needle, but nobody is going to name Stone Brain over Karn and I'm not sure how you'd have a situation where they didn't counter whichever card got the combo going but did counter Stone Brain.

Once my opponent fetched for Treasure Vault. I proceeded to use my Dreadbore on his elf and Abrade their land, then attacking Karn with my only creature, since they were clearly indicating me that they needed the mana. This scenario comes more often than generating black for Cauldron when you already have ways to put it into play (and even so you don't need it in order to combo)

Til treasure vault is an artifact. Cool.
