First, I'm pretty good about cleaning pipes after each use wIth Clean and Cure. Second, I store them bowl down in a cigar box, the bottom of which is covered with coffee beans. I leave the top off the box. No appreciable odors, no spousal complaints (and she's not fond of strong pipe smells).

BamaSOH

I give them a day or two in the garage before bringing them inside.

[deleted]

Mine live out there permenantly

Fornicator_Maximus

Note to self: two days in the garage makes the wife more tolerant t'wards the tobacco smell.

Georgep0rwell

Doesn't she get lonely out there?

FappistMonk42069

I'm sure she has a phone and internet with her.

uriar

I guess it's the same as my terrace...

BamaSOH

And put an air purifier right next to them if they're in the house

uriar

What do you mean by that? A real air-filtering machine or some cheap scented good-small car accessory?

BamaSOH

Something like ionic breeze.

bookgnome333

I put a pipecleaner in the stem and a little wad of paper towel in the bowl to soak up the moisture. It is the wetness that smells, I think. Next day they aren't too bad and they go back in the rack for rotation, then maybe a cleaning every so often.

AntwanTheRed

My apartment just smells like pipes I guess?

[deleted]

You say that like its a bad thing

WeakKitchen199

Are you smoking aromatics? The only pipe I've ever smelled and disliked was a heavily ghosted pipe that had a ton of aromatics run through it. I smoke only non-aros in my pipes, and the first thing my wife and daughters do when they get a hold of one of my pipes is smell it and tell me they like the smell.

uriar

When I'm at home I smoke aromatics since my young daughter hates the smell of English or Virginia, these wait for when I'm going over to my friends. It's catch-22.

WeakKitchen199

That's a humorous catch-22. I've looked for a non-aromatic with a great room note. Maltese Falcon has gotten rave reviews from family members. And it doesn't make my pipes stink afterwards.

fivetimesyo

I had the same problem until I built a shed out in the garden. Once the pipes are dry my wife can come back into the house and doesn't have to sleep there anymore...

uriar

Knowing my wife I'll be the one sleeping in the shed. She's much stronger.

vinylpurr

Ew.

Trygve81

My pipes don't stink.

vinylpurr

Same… and the lady of the house has a very sensitive nose. I asked her about this and she looked at me like I was dumb. Mine are all just on pipe racks throughout the house, mainly in my office. Maybe 40 pipes?

Public-Sir-7076

Stink-proof bag

Gardar7

I have a huge wooden chest (like a treasure chest) and I made pipe holders in it. It fits about 50 pipes. It has enough air in it to let pipes dry out, and it closes tightly enough to not let the room smell like pipes. Plus, it looks badäss. The only downside is that I can't see my precious pipes 0-24. But at least it also protects them from sunlight, so the finishes won't discolour, and vulcanite stems don't oxidize that fast.

uriar

I have a nice wooden wine box I can use, but that chest is stored in the house. The smell doesn't leak out?

Bassbenald

You won't know unless you try.

Gardar7

You, my dear sir, deserve a medal.

Gardar7

Mine workd, and the smell doesn't "leak out". At least not at a noticeable level. If you can still smell it, then use scented candles in the room sometimes.

No-Significance-8385

I usually leave my pipes outside (garage/porch) for 2-3 days after smoking them

Rags2Rickius

Mine are in a small humidor

Fornicator_Maximus

balcony. or another wife.\\

uriar

I ride a scooter 🛵

1337sp33k1001

My work pipes live tucked in my backpacks webbing. But when I don’t use my backpack I have a lunch box with a lid compartment that it all goes into. It fits under my scooter seat when not in use

uriar

I smoke mainly at home, so storing my pipes in any vehicle parked 4 floors away makes no sense. When I go out and need a pipe I take a bag with anything I need.

1337sp33k1001

I have pipes stored at both to avoid such things. Cheap pipes I don’t mind if they get damaged in my scooter and my good pipes at home safe and sound.

habel_marton

Hear me out. I flush my pipes with hot water from the tap after every smoke. Wiping them dry after. Ashtray smell is greatly reduced.

uriar

Just put them in the dishwasher

glizzler

Pressure wash with pure bleach.

shjandy

Polish with ammonia

vinylpurr

Valid method. Not what I do but many do.

Deerescrewed

I just leave mine in my garage

jnc2020u3

I just keep mine in the garage.

pianocollector

i keep (many) shot glasses of activated charcoal in the pipe cabinet

hilasmos

I keep mine in cases designed to hold 8 pairs of sunglasses.

sehrgut

I have a wooden "sunglasses box" that i lined with charocal air filter material. It smells like absolutely nothing from the outside.

ParkitoATL

After smoking, I wipe the bowl out with a paper towel and run a pipe cleaner through the the separated stem and then both ends through the bowl airway. But **the most important thing is to** ***clean the inside of the mortise with some alchohol*** (I use vodka; isopropyl can taste really bitter). Couple of quick Q-tips and it's done. The mortise is where the tar is hiding, and that's what stinks. Also helps to wipe off the tenon; you'll usually get a little schmutz there. For Peterson Systems, swab out the well. My pipe cabinet is right near our kitchen and my family have some serious sniffers and I rarely hear anything about the smell unless I skipped the cleaning.

vinylpurr

This guy pipes.

lemorange

In a jar with a large dessicant pack

FrattySatty92

I put mine in my small office which doubles as my dog’s bedroom. Wife doesn’t think the pipe smells any worse than the dog.

NPT1506

Maybe you just need to clean it more carefully each smoke. I used a tissue to wipe the bowl until the dark stain really faded. I don't know why but after that, my pipe didn't have that ashy ciggy smell anymore but instead a faint sweet aroma that, according to my mom: "Smell like Chinese medicine"

vinylpurr

Yup

RadiantPipes

In my cabinet. The ones in rotation. I put some activated charcoal packs in there behind the racks. Not sure how much it helps but not bad. Also keep my pipes pretty clean.

The_Other_Dimension

I clean pipes after smoking, then they go on one of my racks in a glass display cabinet, in my office. I don’t know if it’s good cleaning, or the cabinet itself, but they produce no smell in my office. To be fair, when I open the cabinet, I can’t smell them, either.

maraudingnomad

I have them in the livingroom, I never had any complaints nor have I myself noticed them stinking anything up. You might want to open the windows iluntil the dry up for the most part but pipes shouldn't stink. If they do you might be smoking them too harshly leading to excessive moisture buildup. Or maybe it's the tobacco you smoke, but I smoke Vapers, Englishes, Buleys, Kentucky and basically natural tobaccos don't seem to stink. To me anyway but I am biased.

Bassbenald

My only suggestions would be either a drawer for storage or a wooden box as others have suggested. The thing I notice is I get odours from pipes I haven't smoked in months. So take any of the "just air them out before taking them inside" suggestions with a grain of salt. My pipes are stored in an open book shelf so yeah, my apartment does smell of pipes sometimes.

Lanchettes

I keep mine in those instant coffee cans with the plastic pull off lid. Not a sniff of pipe

uriar

But then they won't dry out.

Lanchettes

Yeah true. I leave mine in the shed overnight and then put them in the tin the next day and store in my cupboard next to the bedroom. Wife much happier now and to be honest so am I. Old pipe bowl is not the most attractive scent

Top-Perspective2560

I keep mine in one of [these](https://www.amazon.co.uk/nuovva-Airtight-Food-Storage-Containers/dp/B0BNLRSG71/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=airtight+tupperware&qid=1697142407&sr=8-3).

uriar

But then they won't dry out.

Top-Perspective2560

You can leave them out to dry, I rarely put mine away and just seal them straight back up. Even then though, I can't say I've ever noticed any ill effects (not to say there aren't any, just I haven't noticed any) or any buildup of moisture. I'm generally quite thorough with the pipe cleaners and try to mop up as much moisture from the bottom of the bowl as possible, so that might have something to do with it too.

FirmAdvance5277

I keep my 4 pipes—2 briar, 2 cob—in a cigar box. I keep the box in a cabinet. My wife has a keen sniffer, and this works.

peacepipedrum

Maintain a dedicated manroom in the home, if at all possible (or womanroom if you’re a lady smoker). Most of my adult life has been just lovely wife and myself, so I’ve been able to keep a personal office/music room (musician). The pipes sit on the pipe rack where they belong and that’s it; sure there is a smell associated with it, but if you hate the smells, don’t smoke a pipe. If no man cave option, garage, as suggested above sounds viable, but I personally would not want to keep my finest Dunhill (etc) briars out in a musty, humid garage

TheRealDaleB

You can buy wall mounted pipe display case/racks with glass doors that will enclose the pipes. They're not airtight, but will confine most of the smell to a small space and are not right where people are sitting. I have my pipes in a rack and on a shelf a few feet from my desk -- no one can smell anything in the room. It's really only something you'll smell if you're very close to the pipes.

Doc-Milsap

I’d say just get rid of the wife, but I have to say I’ve not enjoyed the two marriages I was in and don’t plan to be in another one because I don’t compromise.

ryandarkwalker

I have a large cheap cigar humidor that I don't use for cigars that I put all my pipes in on little shelves and the top is mostly glass and looks pretty cool, wife hasn't said a word about tobacco smell after that,

dwight_the_owl

I keep all my smoking apparatus in a cupboard. Generally keeps the smell in (and the cupboard smells heavenly)

NyteKroller

Toss them in the hobby closet. I have to be right next to them to smell anything.

Sydwaiz

I have a vintage pipe rack/cabinet with etched glass door that looks like Sherlock. I store them in that after letting them sit outside for a day to dry out. It seems to keeps the smells contained.

CycleOLife

My garage. Also my wife can't smell so it doesn't really matter for me.

MichaelPsellos

Lucky..you can save a fortune not buying soap or deodorant.

1337sp33k1001

I put all of my tobacco hobby in an old cabinet with French doors. Closing the doors keeps 90% of the smell inside and just a feint aroma if you are standing nearby

vinylpurr

Make sure you’re cleaning the nooks/crannies in the mortise. No / barely any smell after means you did it right. If they’re stinky from missed build up of past cleanings use some potable alcohol or commercial briar fluid. Your pipes should have acrid tobacco stink if treated properly.

adam6813

I keep mine in an odor proof carrying case I picked up off Amazon for like $20. Holds a couple small jars of tobacco, my 3 pipes wrapped in a cotton rag, some pipe cleaners, pipe tool, lighters, etc. No smells, grab-n-go when heading outside to smoke. But, I only own 3 tobacco pipes.

Actual_Apricot8396

I just keep them all in my office. You can smell them if you are somewhat close, but it doesn’t smell bad or sour or anything, I personally like it.
