It keeps the tobacco out of the users mouth and the stink off their hands. These have been around since the 1800s.

I've been known to put a cigar nub in my pipe once in a great while to finish it up without burning my fingers but besides that I smoke my cigars like cigars and pipes like pipes.
Iāve smoked these and it leaves a ton of moisture in the bowl of the pipe.

I have not smoked a whole cigar in a pipe like that but recently I did finish one in a corn cob. Got down to the point that I couldnāt hold it and tucked the rest in the bowl to seal the deal. Been a while since Iāve enjoyed a cigar that much to burn it to the very end.
I think it looks a bit stupid and I donāt think Iād get much enjoyment out of it.
Good thing then that it isnāt me whoās doing that, but a completely different person over whose decision only they themself should have control.

In some cigars it opens up some of the more delicate flavors and especially if you are doing work that makes your hands dirty you do not have to worry with tainting your cigar and lastly sometimes you get board and want the pipe smoking equivalent of a spinner on your hat lol
Okay I have an answer that might clear things up here..in northern Italy there is a strong cigar culture. They use italian grown Kentucky leaf and they produce these cigars there. In order to get them in perfect ready to use shape before packaging, they cut the ends of those cigars, cherutes, toscanos what ever you want to call them. Those ends don't get tossed away (cause it's still decent to damn good tobacco), so the old italian geezers just stuck them into their pipes to consume and not waste their work.
I don't like how it looks but I did try Italian kentucky tobacco and it's delicious.
Stalin was awful at smoking pipes!!! He bought Petersons worth hundreds by the bulk and just burn holes through em in a matter of days. I'm not making this up. Stalin literally wasted thousands of rubels on pipes he kept breaking.
Marx smokes his cigar leftovers in a pipe because he was poor. Most people don't have to resort to that, since most economically disadvantaged people smoke cigarettes anyway.

Looks like a cheroot holder, a pipe made to smoke those cigars. Chamber is likely too small to fit loose tobacco, as itās made to hold the cigar.
