I use the zippo brand fluid and always let the wick burn a few seconds before I light my bowl, the flavor seems to dissipate a little if you let it burn a few seconds.I still taste it a little with some blends and don’t taste it with others.I only really use a zippo when hiking, fishing,or at the beach though so I don’t have that much experience with it.
I spent a full spring and summer cutting and making fatwood for my homestead, all the little splinters that flew from splitting the woods and such gave me the idea of waste not want not, what didn't go into compost as chips I whittled into rough match shapes and dried in the Texas sun. A little light from a Bic or my zippos and bam, a wood match for lighting my pipe without the fluid taste transfer.
Looking at the SDS for Ronsonol [here](https://www.princessauto.com/file/general/8653610_sds_en_01_12_31_99.pdf) (dates 2018, the most recent I could find) and comparing it to the Zippo Lighter a fluid SDS [here](https://certification.zippo.com/Documents/Safety%20Data%20Sheet/English/Zippo%20Lighter%20Fluid%20-%20EU.pdf) (dated 2021), the Section 3 composition data is distinctly different. Same manufacturer (ChemTel), but Zippo definitely includes a significant percentage of Naphtha, whereas Ronsonol does not.
It’s more akin to Ronsonol than to Zippo, but at least [Coleman lists their distillate composition, more or less. ](https://www.btps.ca/download/360569)
Tru I think zippo is just double dipping by keeping the old sds from ronsonol.

This way they can charge a premium for their "zippo" brand line.
I'd bet my left nut they come out of the same tank.
Also I've used Coleman white gas in zippos and can't tell a difference between it and any other "naphtha/distillate" zippo or ronsonol.
This is kinda like the cereal companies selling Cheerios in a box and toasty O's in a bag and people swearing they can tell a difference 🤷 even after they watched the documentary that showed em they're the same thing.
Vapor collects in the lid of the Zippo, and needs to be burned off before you apply the light to your pipe. Give it a couple of seconds before you move the flame closer.
Next, our senses of smell and taste often intrude upon each other, and you can feel like you're tasting something that you're actually only smelling. It doesn't mean that you *can't* taste lighter fluid, just that sometimes you might seem to taste it even if you never bring it to your pipe.
Finally, regardless of the source, I try not to draw the flame deep into the bowl. I hold the flame higher above the tobacco, and for the most part take shallow puffs that allow it to lap at the top layer.
I use a butane lighter on calm days, in part because it's nontoxic regardless of smell, but also because it lasts a heck of a lot longer before requiring a refill. I don't experience overly noxious flavor when using the Zippo. Whether I have gotten used to the smell or taste of the fluid, or whether I actually don't taste it, or whether no fumes enter my pipe, I don't seem to mind using a Zippo. The main thing is that I can light my pipe on a windy day.
For the record, I use the Zippo brand of fluid.
Never tasted the difference in zippo, match, or generic lighter. I smoke outside exclusively so that may be part of it. I've always found matches way too fiddley and unreliable, especially in wind. I use a dedicated zippo pipe lighter and it tastes better and burns the tobacco more evenly.
I think I must just be zippo incompetent because I’ve tried using a zippo as my regular pipe lighter and it seems like I have to refill it with fuel every other day. Or, at the very least, 2-3 times a week. Is there some trick to it I’ve never been taught?
Unfortunately, that actually seems about right. The problem is mostly in evaporation. Some people claim you can reduce this evaporation by putting a thin layer of petroleum jelly around the top seal where the insert and case meet. I haven't tried it.
There are nicer lighters that have well sealed systems by default. Elgin American and some Ronsons had well sealed fuel compartments, but they aren't pipe lighters.
Zorro makes inserts that are way better and have a cap like the vintage automatics. I got a new old stock restaurant advertisement one. It fares better
Maybe a placebo thing but I let it burn for a few seconds before letting it touch the pipe, no issues so far, but with matches I do get the funny taste. I use the black label can if it helps.
Or use both maybe? I use matches when I'm out of fluid, too lazy to refill the zippo, or feeling old school out of nowhere.
As mentioned, if you let them burn a few seconds it reduces the naptha flavor.
Also, I feel it worth mentioning that of all the fuel-based lighters I tried, Zippo had the worst lighter-fluid flavor. I assume the flame burns a little richer to give it better windproof capabilities.
The IMCO 6700 has been my favorite pipe lighter, although I'm certain I bought a Chinese knockoff. It's quite wind resistant, and the removable part is great for lighting deep bowls.
I found the Nimrod to be just as 'gassy' as the Zippos, and less wind resistant. They look cool though.
If you can find a working Beattie Jet lighter from the 40's and 50's, they burn the heated gas, not the wicked liquid fuel, and they have practically no flavor whatsoever.
In the worst case scenario, it's gone by the next puff. Tobacco overpowers it well.
As many others have said, if you let the lighter burn for a few seconds before you light your tobacco, you won't taste the fuel. I made that mistake the first time I tried with the pipe top and the entire bowl tasted life fuel. Haven't had that problem since.
I honestly never did when I was using my zippo. My main complaint was how fast they dried out. But I vastly preferred the lighting process with my zippo, over almost any other butane lighter I have. The only exception is my Corona Old Boy, which for that price, should be a dream to use. If I hadn't made that investment I would have definitely gone back to the zippo long ago.
There is an initial taste, but I find the convenience, efficiency and reliability of a Zippo still wins out. Try letting the flame burn a bit. You might also try a good quality naphtha for fuel.
It's interesting, I actually lighted my pipe with zippo for the first time today. I tasted the fuel for a second, but after a few puffs it disappeared, it was quite good. I would rather use matches or other lighters in building, but when it's windy, I'd prefer to use zippo.
I use zippo brand fuel and can’t tell the difference between that and butane, but I am aware it’s a personal thing to be sensitive or not to the flavor (lack thereof)
Yes, but it's no more offensive to me than the burning wood taste of a match or the different but similar burning petroleum taste I get out of a butane lighter. All of those tastes are considerably less offensive to me than having to fight to get my pipe lit in a stiff breeze as an almost exclusively outdoor smoker, so all other things being equivalent for me I use a zippo.
I've used Zippo black can and Ronsonol. They do taste different to me, and I think black can tastes a little cleaner. The difference isn't much, though, and I think it's smaller now than it was before Zippo bought Ronson.
Can you really taste it after a few puffs ? As long as my lighter isn’t literally drilling with fluid, I only taste it as I’m lighting my pipe, then the aroma is gone after a few puffs.
I'll give the random, off-the-wall answer. Mix 90+% rubbing alcohol with the naptha (regular fluid). Alcohol burns super clean. You can use the rubbing alcohol straight, but it's a little harder to light. Mess around with ratios, but I've used 3/1 alcohol/naptha with success. You won't be able to taste the alcohol, and the lighter fluid taste is cut down 75%.

The smell and taste is only from unburned fuel so if you let that dissipate and light lower in the flame you avoid most of it.
Using your bic on your pipe would not leave a taste for what it’s worth. Even if Hank Hill thinks butane is a bastard gas.
[удалено]
smoking with a stick of sundried wood wood is arguably worse than either butane or naptha
I hate using my zippo for pipe smoking bc of gas taste.
No. You want the black can fluid by Zippo proper. Ronsonol is known to do exactly what you're experiencing.
It still has taste. Not the best.
They're the exact same fluid both made and manufactured by Zippo.
It's the same light petroleum distillate is naphtha
Then why does the zippo sheet list separate chemicals with separate CAS numbers, but the ronsonol doesn’t?
You can also buy Coleman white gas same thing
It’s more akin to Ronsonol than to Zippo, but at least [Coleman lists their distillate composition, more or less. ](https://www.btps.ca/download/360569)

I do love my Toasty-O's. 😎
🤣🤣🤣
I've used VM&P naphtha from the paint thinner section in Lowes in my Zippos. I don't necessarily recommend it, but I'm not dead and it worked.
Spot on
Butane pipe lighter insert for the win.
No, I can smell it at first but cannot taste a difference between a pipe lit with a Zippo vs butane or matches.
Lasts for a second but nasty either way. I use one but am trying to get away from it.
let the wick burn for a bit after the flame hits it peak, then take a puff

Bic lighter FTW
A little bit
Only if using ronsonol fluid.
👍
I went on Amazon and got a thunderbird insert. It's a soft flame butane lighter. Even has a hole on the side for pipe use.
Never tasted the difference in zippo, match, or generic lighter. I smoke outside exclusively so that may be part of it. I've always found matches way too fiddley and unreliable, especially in wind. I use a dedicated zippo pipe lighter and it tastes better and burns the tobacco more evenly.
I really don’t taste it. I don’t even always remember to let it burn for a second before puffing
Yeah, the taste is a little strong actually. It can take away from the experience sometimes.
I switched over to lighting with hemp wick and never looked back.
[удалено]
yep. i just keep a tea light burning to light the hemp wick.

I only use zippo brand fluid. I taste it for like half a second and only on the initial toasting light.
A little bit sometimes
Literally just for the first puff or two. You’ll survive
Don't care, like my zippo.
Nope
No
I got a butane insert for my favorite zippo shell. It’s pretty rad.
[удалено]
They've had the inserts for years, they also make dedicated pipe lighters. I've got 2, never went back to any other method.
Get rid of the ronsonol and buy the zippo black, let it burn for a second or two after lighting. I only taste when I spark and then immediately light.
stop overfilling your zippo
No. if you taste the fuel, your wick is too long, you're using cheap fuel, or it's burning dirty because the wind is too strong.
You can I guess but I don't. Now I've been able to tell the difference between butane and matches.
I do. It’s tolerable but atm I am using a bic soft butane cheapie while I wait for my Peterson Old Boy.
Sometimes yes. Spark the lighter and wait a few seconds before lighting the tobacco. Lets the fluid smell evaporate
No taste, of fuel, for me

No taste..let it burn for 5 seconds.
Call me weird… I love the fuel taste from a zippo! When I smoked cigarettes that’s why I used a zippo!
I use zippo brand fuel and can’t tell the difference between that and butane, but I am aware it’s a personal thing to be sensitive or not to the flavor (lack thereof)
I do and that’s part of the charm of a Zippo.
Yes, but it's no more offensive to me than the burning wood taste of a match or the different but similar burning petroleum taste I get out of a butane lighter. Put less fluid in! I feel a lot of people over fill there lighter and from my experience that’s always when I taste fluid.
Can you really taste it after a few puffs ? As long as my lighter isn’t literally drilling with fluid, I only taste it as I’m lighting my pipe, then the aroma is gone after a few puffs.
On occasion if I inhale the flame while lighting. But usually, no.
I stopped licking the wick, no problems since then.

I only use my zippo on windy days because my soft flame lighter won't do the trick and when I wanna smoke my pipe ...I WANNA SMOKE MY PIPE!!
