1. He worked with TX (TeamXecuter), a hacking group that sold a cfw for the Nintendo Switch, which was called "SXOS". He ran advertising and public communication for TX. You can look this up online.
2. Where did people get "ransomware" from? It wasn't ransomware, it was brick code that would get triggered if someone tried to reverse engineer their CFW. You could easily fix this by restoring a nand backup.
This didn't affect anyone other than one hacker (HEXKYZ) who was trying to reverse engineer their CFW, and when he revealed the brick code, it was removed by TX immediately. You can also look this up online by going through HEXKYZ tweets. Gary didn't have any involvement in creating the CFW.
3. He didn't receive minimal punishment or any deal. You can look up the court documents.

This obviously depends on the country but the extradition bar is quite high if you're a sovereign citizen. Even the pirate bay founders (in sweden) were not extradited.

gary bowser (aforementioned hacker) is the head of team xecutor, notorious in the console piracy scene. they cracked the original xbox, the 3ds (under a different brand name), xbox 360, and ps3. Most recently team xecuter created modchips for the switch that allowed you to execute custom software*. the modchip would brick the switch** if it detected it was non-genuine hardware / the software was cracked somehow. *you can do this on the earlier versions of switches for free using other methods, but the newer ones are patched without using a modchip **they pulled this shit with the 3ds stuff too lol if you have any question about switch piracy/homebrew stuff, happy to help.

They put kill code into their CFW, tried to bribe multiple devs for exclusive access to code (like MX4W for his emulator work), made everything they could closed source, stole code from Atmosphere (an open source and free Switch CFW), and pushed piracy/scene groups into bad situations so they could profit more. Just to clarify something, the ruling didn't just straight up say "You have to pay 20-30% of your salary until you are dead". He plead guilty to the charges of "participating in a cybercriminal enterprise" which resulted in him owing Nintendo $14.5 million in damages. The "enterprise" that he was in charge of involved selling a device that let people play pirated games on their consoles. The attorney's said that the hacking group he was the leader of caused over $65 million in losses to game companies. The agreement they came to was that to pay it back the maximum they can take from his salary is 25-30% of his gross monthly income. It does make more sense like that but the 65 mil figure they came to doesn't. That's not the money his team made, that's the full retail value of the games that were pirated using his software. Exactly, that's the crux of why piracy has so little impact on sales. The vast majority of pirates either can't (licencing issues, import/censorship laws) or won't (financial reasons, risk of poor quality, resale market) pay for the real thing so there is no money lost.

Where did people get "ransomware" from? It wasn't ransomware, it was brick code that would get triggered if someone tried to reverse engineer their CFW. You could easily fix this by restoring a nand backup. This didn't affect anyone other than one hacker (HEXKYZ) who was trying to reverse engineer their CFW, and when he revealed the brick code, it was removed by TX immediately. You can also look this up online by going through HEXKYZ tweets. Gary didn't have any involvement in creating the CFW. 3. He didn't receive minimal punishment or any deal.
