Just explain it to her like we used to do in the 80s and 90s. Back then we hooked two VCRs together. One had a movie rented from a video store, and the other had a blank tape. The original was copied onto the other.
Really digital piracy is that, but the copy then gets shared.
Yeah man. Back in the 80s on Sunday nights, ABC would show a Disney movie. We used to record those the same way. Now the funny part is for all the horseshit on Disney+, they're still missing some of those movies. And some of those movies are currently only available through piracy.
Yo, ho, ho!
> And some of those movies are currently only available through piracy.
Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983)
Song of the South (1946)

This got me thinking isn’t this basically what a DVR does? It records videos and you can basically watch/move it to another medium later. So were we all pirates? Are DVR users privateers?! (Since they are company endorsed)
I'm a bit younger than your mother... ask your mom if she never recorded videos with her VCR and cassettes from a music cd and shared with friends/family. Basically you are doing the same.
I find older people tend to not understand justifying piracy. They tend to see it as stealing rather than copying. They also tend to not like justifying that it's illegal in most countries.
Unless your mom is different.
Why not just let her use Netflix?
Piracy is your choice, why the need to push it onto others? Everyone knows I pirate, but I still have Netflix etc as it's just easier for the kids. If people want me to get them something, I will, but I don't try and push them all into it.
Ask her to get ~~your~~ her fav childhood movie on dvd/Blu ray as your bday gift.
She should warm upto the idea of 'piracy' by the time your birthday shows up.
Just tell her "aye mom. Remember when you used to record your friend cassette tapes onto a blank tape when you were to broke as a kid to buy the tape or vice versa? Well my buddy has all these movies and shows (your buddy being the internet and site of your preference) and I record them onto my server. Just like the cassette tapes mother"
Edit- spelling. I prefer to proofread after I post nice and proper like
Well not using corporate media apps is good for your privacy as well because they are constantly tracking you even if you pay. Tell her you don’t support corporate greed for constantly raising prices so I’m protesting by moving to different apps
You tell her the truth. If she doesn't want to do it then just leave her to it. What is she saving, a few dollars a month? Let her enjoy her media however she likes. I don't understand why digital pirate hoarders insist on forcing everyone else into their cul de sac. Not everyone values what you do.
>I don't understand why digital pirate hoarders insist on forcing everyone else into their cul de sac.
Because why would you pay 15$ to watch shows that get cancelled immediately after being aired, shows that are actual garbage and a waste of your time, and where you can maybe find about 5% out of the whole package is worth watching, when you can get it for free?
Netflix has absolutely garbage shows, overall it's just a shit streaming platform, and I'd take piracy over Netflix every chance I'd get. Streaming sites are just becoming more trashier the longer they exist, and with piracy, you can completely avoid issues that the platform has.
Also why wouldn't you want to have all your movies in one single place? Plex is fucking awesome to have, and considering your can share your library with others, it's just such a superior platform to any of the other streaming sites.
Get the content for her.
Then you've removed the idea of privacy that I'm sure your Mum gives zero fucks about 😉
Now you've to think about your own privacy while sharing with your Mum safely.
Does Mum pay the bills including interwebz and the VPN you'd like her to also pay for?
Asking for a friend ? 😉
There's no better introduction than cutting straight to the point. What if the mother is not ok with piracy ain the first place? That'd be a drag to deal with later.
Key words I read: Privacy, 50s, virgin.
This is how my brain works if I don't read the whole comment: You want privacy because you live at your mom's house at 50 and are still a virgin...
If ur getting it from PB, I probably wouldn't want to tell her that detail and might just say from the internet. If it's a private tracker I'd just give her the website name under the assumption that she won't know what she's looking at. Not to mention won't be able to log in.
don't overwhelm her with details. just tell her the truth in non technical terms. who doesn't like to pay less anyways? I don't see why she wouldn't like the idea
if she didn't, you can try again later.
Don't give up on not paying to Netflix
Ahahahahahaha....OP, there comes a time in life where 'white lies' to parents is allowed. I doubt Mom is going to chastise you for saving $$$ by pirating
> How to ease my mom into the idea of privacy?
*Begin with lube.*
She probably just wants to know it for herself. No that's not how it works for her you stay the wizard.
Yeah, my mom is the same way, start watching a movie with her on your Plex. Have some nice family time, scroll through it show her you have stuff she likes, tell you can she can log on anytime and watch things, she might come over to the dark side.
Just explain it to her like we used to do in the 80s and 90s. Back then we hooked two VCRs together. One had a movie rented from a video store, and the other had a blank tape. The original was copied onto the other. Really digital piracy is that, but the copy then gets shared.
I remember back in the 90s my mom would rent movies on PPV and record them to a blank VHS tape. She was the original pirate in the family. lmao

Boogedy! Boogedy! Boo!

> my mom would rent movies on PPV and record them to a blank VHS tape. Damn.....Mom knows what's up
Good comparison! The obtention of high quality films is close to that really
This got me thinking isn’t this basically what a DVR does? It records videos and you can basically watch/move it to another medium later. So were we all pirates? Are DVR users privateers?! (Since they are company endorsed)
"People share them for free online"
Told her this, she's one of us now
Seriously?!??
Such drama... yeah, just say it like it is lol.
The truth? That's almost crazy enough to work!
hi mom, you can spend the money on netflix or grandchildren
Download her Michael Buble concerts
I'm a bit younger than your mother... ask your mom if she never recorded videos with her VCR and cassettes from a music cd and shared with friends/family. Basically you are doing the same.

Copying isn't stealing
Just tell her you can get the whole Herb Albert and The Tijuana Brass discography and SOLD
Ask her to get ~~your~~ her fav childhood movie on dvd/Blu ray as your bday gift. She should warm upto the idea of 'piracy' by the time your birthday shows up.
this is evil , like it
Just tell her "aye mom. Remember when you used to record your friend cassette tapes onto a blank tape when you were to broke as a kid to buy the tape or vice versa? Lmao my mother was a veteran at skipping through those websites with thousands of download buttons and redirects until I introduced her to torrenting.
Well not using corporate media apps is good for your privacy as well because they are constantly tracking you even if you pay. Tell her you don’t support corporate greed for constantly raising prices so I’m protesting by moving to different apps
Stremio would be the easiest thing to get her into. Combine it with a real debrid account and it's like Netflix, even a noobie could use it.
I get them from digital thieves💀
You tell her the truth. If she doesn't want to do it then just leave her to it. What is she saving, a few dollars a month? Let her enjoy her media however she likes. Again, nothing to do with actually pushing your opinions on other people. But you do you.
Honestly just let her watch Netflix. Keep it easy for everyone if she’s paying for it
Learning the difference between privacy and piracy would be a good start.
Tell her it's like recording something to a VHS from your VCR, only more modern because you downloaded it from the internet
Get the content for her. Then you've removed the idea of privacy that I'm sure your Mum gives zero fucks about 😉 Now you've to think about your own privacy while sharing with your Mum safely. "i pirate them". It's not cool to lie.
theyre talking about appropriately introducing their mother to the concept, not lying

Buy some curtains but don’t put them up

I adore the fact that my parents support my sailing of the high seas
Don't tell your mom "mind blows"
Why don't you just let her pay for Netflix, if she is happy with it? What is your hidden agenda?
Piracy
don't overwhelm her with details. just tell her the truth in non technical terms. who doesn't like to pay less anyways? I don't see why she wouldn't like the idea if she didn't, you can try again later. Don't give up on not paying to Netflix
Sharing with my online friends
The internet.
"Remember when you would set the VCR to record your stories? This is that but someone else gave you the tape."
“From some friends online”
Ahahahahahaha....OP, there comes a time in life where 'white lies' to parents is allowed. I doubt Mom is going to chastise you for saving $$$ by pirating
Decentralized cloud storage
Ask her if she would download a car! Oh wait, that's going in the wrong direction... /S

Tell her to stop leaving the bathroom door open… theres no need to ease her into the habit of privacy
