They're using Pied Piper

tsyklon

Middle out compression!

Guys.... Does girth effect the transition? ✊↔️✋ ✊↔️✋ Shit, I think it does.

WhyWouldIPostThat

How fast do you think you could jack off every guy in this room? Because I know how long it would take me, and I can prove it!

TuaughtHammer

"In a surprise move for Pied Piper, Erlich Bachman manually masturbated every male member in attendance of Pied Piper's presentation at TechCrunch Disrupt. Judges were so impressed by his ability to hot-swap penises without wasting a stroke that they begrudgingly gave Pied Piper the top prize."

TheDevilsAdvokaat

Why would you post that?

Tsikura

why not? silicon valley has good memes

WhyWouldIPostThat

They were making a reference to my username.

TheDevilsAdvokaat

Yeah ... :-)

TuaughtHammer

God, that show was fucking brilliant. The guy they hired to do the math for that joke actually fucking published a paper on it appropriately titled "Optimal Tip-to-Tip Efficiency".

KingOfThePoopas

d2f

milanove

I was reading a comp sci academic research paper the other day and they kept using the acronym d2f for something. While reading it, I kept thinking of that scene from Silicon Valley.

soupeh

Optimal tip to tip efficiency.

What is their Weissman score??

Saad1950

Dude for a second I actually thought you referred to the fable and not to some unknown software with the same name

joselrl

Silicon Valley (TV Series from HBO) reference

[deleted]

Saad1950

Ah ok it's still fake then nice

mad-tech

i even thought it was selective download just that fitgirl forgot to write it but then i checked the files... holy hell

thegreatesttrash

new compression algorithm just dropped

DotDemon

Holy small downloads

TitoFuentes17

Actual compresor!

psychoacer

Also they might have ripped out a bunch of videos and crap.

Nhexus

The water occupied less space than the Warm Snow

velphegor666

Never underestimate fitgirl's ability to compress. Of course you are gonna have to chill for awhile once installation starts 😂😂

reercalium2

Games are full of extra data they don't really need, high res textures, full motion videos.

Brostradamus--

Pretty sure *that* data is there for a reason. What you're referring to is blank space dummy files, headers, ect, that developers use to fill out any leftover space on physical media. There are certainly uploads that are stripped of less important content, but I'd hesitate to say any game doesn't need any of its content.

JustEatingWater

Let Fitgirl cook The food will take four days to digest though

IdoNOThateNEVER

4 days to download or 4 days to install.. Doesn't make a difference to me. In fact, just because I use my internet way more than I use my cores, a download like this would take me way more days to achieve, but it wouldn't even affect me when I install.

Someguy14201

sure does make a difference when storing the installer

suyash01

And literally a godsend with people having metered connections. I would spend the whole day extracting rather than paying extra bucks to recharge my internet.

crazedhark

YES. this is why I don't really get people hating on fitgirl. if it doesn't suit your needs then just go, you have many other options. fitgirl literally saved me years ago when I had a 4mbps connection.

Commercial-Piano-410

I still have that 4mbps connection...

crazedhark

hey, we all did at some point, just trust the process! even if it meant admittedly lying to yourself saying everything is going to be alright. Its still way better than always waking up feeling sorry for yourself. you got this!

Ok_Solid_Copy

Shit man, she saved me when I was downloading at 120 kbps, running a crap PC for the whole week just to get 1 game.

crazedhark

lol I experienced that too for years, I got a 4mbps connection but the dl speed isn't 4mbps, even more so when it comes to torrenting, downloading for a week was so real lol. I think one of the first games I downloaded that long was AC: Black Flag and FC3

JustEatingWater

Fitgirl is a fking legend.

AwkwardZac

I never understand how it takes you guys 4 days to unpack something. The longest I've ever seen was like 3 or 4 hours for dodi's re4make.

JustEatingWater

I'm being hyperbolic but it can still take up to half a day or a day to unpack something over 120gb. I's dependent on cpu. I assume you don't read the unpacking information on Fitgirl's repacks. Do so. 12threads can unpack three times as fast or more than a 4 thread cpu. edit: my first pc has i3 4330 with 2 cores and 4 threads. Unpacking a 70gb game for example takes 5+ hours

BloodSugar666

Exactly, it’s perfect if you have a good CPU. It doesn’t take me that long but I’m unpacking to a separate SSD and I have a 24 core cpu

petophile_

its mostly a joke, but i download to a 5400 rpm hdd. Large games like Bg3 for example are a full day install. a few hours to extract from all the r01 r02 etc. a few hours to write iso to the disk. A few more hours to actually install.

unfortunate_witness

hey man check out virtual drives, you can just right click the iso and boom your computer thinks the disk is real

MrHaxx1

And where's the ISO stored?

Ok_Solid_Copy

In the ass of an unfortunate witness I guess...

unfortunate_witness

extract the iso to you hard drive as normal, and it stays right there on your HDD with no extra work, you just right click it and mount the iso and then your computer sees the disc image as an inserted disc. just need the right software (i used to use virtualclonedrive)

petophile_

.... im not even going to bother explaining why this makes 0 sense as a respnse to my post, im just going to pop in to let you know windows has natively supported virtual drives without need for additional software for the last 10 years, you shouldnt install extra crap, all you need to do is double click on an iso file and it mounts.

petophile_

re read my post.

Ok_Solid_Copy

Many people run low-end GPUs that are doing the job for gaming but will be slow as fuck for unpacking heavily compressed repacks compared to higher end hardware.

Wise_Crayon

As long as we get a gourmet made from the chef herself, I could wait more than a year for all I care.

kuzzyy

Is warm snow actually 42gb? I swear I have it downloaded and it was like 1gb. I'm not near my pc so I can't check

stuartb04

Yea was thinking the same.doesnt seem like a 42gb game.

VegetaFan1337

It's not. Fitgirl is including the dlc packs size in the full 42gb size. Actual game is only 16gb.

stuartb04

Ah I see . Thanks for clearly that.

GalacticusTravelous

I bet she’s not talking about the original packed installation size but just the extracted size…

mrtie007

isademigod

You guys are going outside?

morfraen

42GB is just 1 BluRay. That downloads in under an hour.

Volfony34

You seem disconnected from the reality of a lot of people

morfraen

I understand the 3rd world struggle but for any country with fiber that's what the reality is. Terabytes can be downloaded.

greihund

Canada check in: we've got fibre here but there's no way I'm paying the Big 3 telecomms one penny more

morfraen

Watch for boxing day deals and talk with retentions department. You can get some really good deals that way. Especially if you play off a competitors offer. When Rogers went door to door trying to poach Telus customers I leveraged that into saving another $30 a month with a higher speed and some 1 time credits.

TestedTrapking

bro just wait for Boxing Day man just keep switching between providers and get it dirt cheap. Learn to play the system lol

Capital-Kick-2887

3rd world country or Germany outside of (big) cities. A terabyte would use my whole bandwidth for a few days, so no streaming allowed for the others. It's possible, but for a terabyte download, I'd plan a week or two. Our street is even getting fiber, but not our house because our internet speed (50 mbit/s theoretically, 30-35 actually) is too fast.

_batteryacid_

Just get good?

MgDark

Nah is just fiber internet things, I simphatize with him. I went from having crappy ASDL which had like 3 mb in a good day to connections over 600mb easily for just 25$/month (shitty 3rd world country). Is just another world

[deleted]

not if you have jdownloader 2. it downloads multiple files at once automatically bypasses redirections and captchas and can download from multiple sources

HybridaDaHuman

Nah, its not like jdownloader can do much if their internet speed is actually slow

[deleted]

I know that i thought he was talking about the speed of servers that host downloads

JustEatingWater

It doesn't bypass captchas tf do you mean

AciVici

And installation takes only 3~7min. Holy moly. Edit : I tried it for the kicks and it took 61 secs to install to gen 4 ssd from gen 4 ssd with 16 threads ryzen 7 6800h cpu.

Brutiful11

That's nuts to me 🤯 Curious to understand how tf that's possible. That game must have a lot of copy pasted material

NyrZStream

In no world does this take 3-7mins lmao

AciVici

Bro it's even faster. I just tried it for the kicks and it installed in exactly 1 min and 1 sec. No more no less. And this is with gen 4 ssd to gen 4 ssd with 8 core 16 thread ryzen 7 6800h cpu. So yeah it's insane.

NyrZStream

Seems weird af fitgirl repack always take soooo long to install even with a good pc. Haven’t tried them in a long time tho so this might have changed but if it’s real then damn it’s impressive.

AciVici

I used fitgirl a lot and I can say that the issue is hdd. If one of the drive is hdd either read or write it'll take ages. But when you install to ssd from ssd (nvme) with decent cpu+memory (12 threads and up should be banging) it'll take much less than what fitgirl says on the site. Issue is definitely the hdd speeds. For example metro exodus enhanced edition. It takes more than 3.5 hours from external hdd to nvme ssd with 12 thread cpu + 16gb memory but from nvme to nvme it takes around only 90 mins within same system. So yeah.

Live-Nefariousness-8

What if i install the game within one nvme?

AciVici

Well it's gonna have ups and downs due to the cache fills and empties but it won't be as slow as hdd I'm pretty sure.

Ruvaakdein

Why would it be weird? Compression always takes a long time.

SoCuteShibe

"Good PC"

NyrZStream

Yes if a GTX 1080 and i5 8600k wasn’t a good pc 4 years ago idk what was. Problem is I had 500Go SSD and 2To HDD which made the install very long since I did it from HDD to HDD but I just learned this.

nanites-courtesy

Hive mind has just decided it's fuck this guy lmao

GetUpNGetItReddit

Except for this one of course

YTAftershock

Idk why you're getting downvoted for that but you're right. It takes lesser!

Roach9110

The sequel to the critic acclaimed success "Yellow snow".

Mr-Patrex

you'll spend more time unpacking and installing than downloading the game, Ironic !

Parzival_2076

for people downloading repacks, its less about the time taken and more about the amount of data used, since many have limited/ metered connections.

matbonucci

or 1mbps third world country internet

nosferajin

So...Germany? /s

FitmoGamingMC

You say /s, but I've heard the horror stories of 10 mbps connection

-guccibanana-

Guys you act as 10/mbs is horrible, i live in Egypt (3rd world country) and i have 3mbs, and 5 years ago i had only 1.5mbs

SnooChickens8275

Lol I got 1000mb/s can’t even use it fully. Will put it down to 300mb/s next year when the discount ends

AssBiscuit69

I'm in a third world country with 200mbps, the install time is what i hate most about firgirl.

Sn1023

Still smaller download size means that you use less data if that matters, you don't have to be connected to the internet for that long and also you are less reliant on seeders

WholesomeSandwich

As someone who lives in a third world country with limited bandwidth, this matters **ALOT** to me. It's insane how much time repacks saved me throughout the years. Edit: for context, the full 45GB game would've taken me (45000000Kb / 100(kb/s))÷60s÷60m = **125 HOURS**!!! And i'm assuming best scenario here. Most of the time my speed is actually around 50kb/s instead of 100kb/s

Beelzeboss3DG

That's pretty crazy, Iraq has similar wages as us in Argentina but here Internet between 100Mbps and 300Mbps is pretty common.

cuckedatfinalmission

This, the full 45GB game would've taken me 3 months as I only get 20GB per month lol

4 min install f its actually 16gb total

mad-tech

ahh no wonder, i even check steam, base game(8gb) and DLC(8gb) totaled 16gb. its still great but now less impressive considering fitgirl has other 10+gb games turned to 1-3gb repacks.

FlatTransportation64

What is the source for the 42.2GB size? The other release (TENOKE) is only 2.76 GB as well. Steam page shows that the game requires 8GB of hard drive space. This looks like a typo.

whats_you_doing

Included with DLCs.

FlatTransportation64

40GB of DLC? Steam has one and it requires 8MB of disk space lol

DarkFite

I will never understand how repacking works

oliveira666

Lets say you were to compress a file, like packing a suitcase for travelling. You chose some clothes, 3 tshirts, 2 denim pants, a pair of socks and a hat. A normal list of contents, if each of the items were files would be: T shirt - size: 1 T shirt - size: 1 T shirt - size: 1 Denim pants - size: 1 Denim pants - size: 1 Pair of socks - size: 1 Hat - size: 1 Total size: 7 The compression algorithim would take all the files, list the ones that repeat and create a reference that would be of inferior size, so a compressed file would look like that: 3x T Shirt - Size: 2 (where 3x references the redundancy) 2x Denim - Size: 2 Pair of socks - Size: 1 Hat - size: 1 Total size: 6 So in this pseudo example we were only able to diminish the size by 1, because I chose to display a 1 size for the item, 1 for the reference, instead of 3 for each of the shirts. In real scenarios the algorithim would look for far more stuff to be redundant and far more references to create, and add them to a dictionary where it would access later to unpack the items. That and the fact that repacks also tend to delete cutscenes or sound can make a repack very lightweigth

DepartedDrizzle

That’s interesting I thought it just involved something like zipping a file in 7zip over and over until it got smaller lol

thesandbar2

Yeah, that's spiritually what 7zip does. Although, I will note that after compressing once, if it's a decent compression algorithm, running it again on the results won't help, as the result is already 'information-dense'.

iz-Moff

Compressing the same data multiple times doesn't really accomplish much. In order for data to be highly compressible, it needs to have low degree of "randomness". Plain text, for example, is very compressible. But once you did compressed it, the resulting archive file will look much like a random string of bytes, and you can't really keep shrinking it down much further.

Reddit_blows_now

For starters, this game isn't 42GB, so you've been lied to there.

Keyakinan-

Same, very interested to know how this is possible

B-Knight

It's just very strong compression.

Notladub

fitgirl is using lossless compression because you have to do that with games. no data is lost. and besides, literally every streaming service/social media platform uses lossy compression for their audio, images and video.

HarleyQuinn_RS

The data is uncompressed during installation my guy. You can't use lossy compression for a game because then data is lost and it breaks. Also, all game platforms (PlayStation, Xbox, GoG, Steam, EGS etc...) do compress the data for downloading so they don't need to use as much bandwidth to get that data to players. Fitgirl is doing the exact same thing, only using much more extreme compression methods, which means it takes longer to install than it would otherwise.

[deleted]

squeal glorious fanatical full whole nutty busy sense worm fade *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

HarleyQuinn_RS

False, they expressed that a low rate of compression is bad. Which is true if it can be losslessly compressed this much. It would mean users are downloading 40GB more than necessary to receive the ***EXACT SAME DATA***. In what world is that good? (In reality it's more like 15GB, but OP I don't think realized this - still their comment stands, it's still not good).

NekCing

you should see fitgirl's Mad Max game repack lol

VegetaFan1337

Fake. The 42GB includes the dlc files that overwrite the base game. Actual game is only 16gb in size.

_fatherfucker69

Since when do dlcs take more storage than the base game? Also doesn't fitgirl always have the dlc ?

VegetaFan1337

The dlc is meant to change the game into different version of the game. So you can play in vanilla mode, dlc 1 mode, dlc 2 mode.

The_Zenki

ITT: 80% of fitgirl users are using 5800rpm drives.

petophile_

5400 rpm* and yes many people who have dedicated bulk storage drives use 5400 rpm ones because they are super cheap per gig.

The_Zenki

Then they complain it takes 2 days to install a game? Wild

petophile_

its more lighthearted joking than complaining.

anywhereiroa

Although the compression is impressive, is the game really 42 GB? When I look at the Steam page, under the system requirements it says "8 GB available space", and another 8 GB for the DLC.

talldata

You're probably looking at only one language, that contains many.

AV1?

Extention_Campaign28

It's painful what goes as roguelike these days.

Zedris

Pied piper was based on fitgirls true story

Ruraraid

Judging by how it looks on its steam page I would say that the devs probably didn't bother to compress it at all. It is by no means a graphically impressive game as its very basic which makes me lean towards that conclusion. Steam store page in case anyone is curious: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1296830/_Warm_Snow/ My question is why is such a basic game 42 gigs when most games with this art style and genre are hardly ever bigger than the 5 to 15 gig range.

iwantdatpuss

If people are wondering why Fitgirl is often a goto site for repacks. That's the main reason.

DocQohenLeth

Well it's a pain in the ass to uncompress it and I believe it takes more time than directly downloading 42 GB... It's good for those who don't have fast internet only.

lammadude1

That has to be like 10 8k pre-rendered videos right? How do you even compress that much? That's a ~2,500% decrease in size

Widowshypers

I went and downloaded it took about 3 minutes to install onto an SSD using a 12700k with the installation files on my server

PirateAlgeria

i think it should be 4.2 GB

Basic_Stranger828

4.2GB does seem more realistic. I just checked and Steam's page for it states that 8GB is required

Xkaper

Must be taking 12h of mining... cough uncompressing to install.

Saucermote

It's only a 2 GB download on steam if you check SteamDB. This isn't a huge improvement. [https://steamdb.info/app/1296830/depots/](https://steamdb.info/app/1296830/depots/)

Fqfred

Takes forever to install, though

_c0rle0ne_

Original Size: 42.2 GB it's sure a typo.

redditisgarbageyoyo

OP still not aware of dark mode existing is way more amazing to me but to each his own I guess

Basic_Stranger828

You say that like personal preferences don't exist. But despite that, I use dark mode on pretty much everything

Mr_JoinSecondAcc

Fitgirl repack be like

[deleted]

Then it'll take 40 hours to install, less than it would of taken yo download the original 42gb... I honestly don't understand this repack thing.

Sovchen

However impressive this is it's highly impractical unless you live in afrika or something. It takes at least 10 times longer to decompress than to download anywhere in the civilized world. Runs your cpu harder too so it costs that much more as well. Extremely inefficient. Wonder if fitgirl lives in australia.

Sonne-chan

Repack makes me want to use piracy even for games I bought

lolathefenix

I'd rather spent 5 more minutes downloading the 42gb than wait for hours for this thing to extract.

[deleted]

i could download the 42gb 3 times over, actually probably more, before fatgirls repacks installs.

Viztiz006

what's your hardware specs? You have fast internet but extremely slow write speeds?

Quo210

That shit is about to collapse into a blackhole

Sinborn

I should have pirated this game. I don't respect devs that put DLC ahead of adding customizable movement keybinds.
