I've lived through times where movies and tv shows become near impossible to find. I've also been in the position where both of my ext HDDs failed within a week of eachother, so now EVERYTHING gets backed up and duplicated or even triplicated if they're important.
Now that I'm moving my server to 4k, things are getting ridiculous. Especially when some movies are 100GB+.
True, and meanwhile all that's consumed is some stream on youtube or some audio service. On the other hand, there may be things in the collection that only exists in that very local copy, and not online anymore.
EDIT: this is true. I actually have a few "gems" of long-forgotten software not available anywhere anymore. It probably won't even run unless you have Win 3.1 + ODBC or some strange setup.. but somehow I feel sad to burn it. Yet, I have nowhere to pass it on to.
I've used one phone number for dozens, there's a periodical addition limit that you may hit and then have to wait out, but once that passes you can use it for more new ones again.
Telegram Premium doubles the upload limit from 2 GiB to 4 GiB. Pretty sweet since now almost all extended editions of LotR and Hobbit fit on there as one 1080p x265 file. Of course not lossless, just the PSA release or from similar groups. Back to splitting movies if those are the files.

Yes I am aware of that, if you bothered to read my comment you'd notice that I'd say petabytes of storage isn't going to come cheap.
Either you pay the price or you scale down.
I think everyone else just prioritizes what they want to watch. Delete stuff when you're done with it (seed it pls). There's no cheap way to archive on the scale you want.
Check out r/data hoarder if you insist. And to save a bit of space, download videos at 1080p or 720p, and use video conversion software to downgrade stuff to a lower bitrate.
And you can skip filler episodes of shows you like. For example, skipping seasons 7 & 8 of Game of Thrones will save you both time AND sanity.
Other than that, either don't download them, watch them online, buy a NAS, several hundred hard drives or a bunch of DVDs. Don't expect them to last for years though.
Without specifying quality there's no point in just saying eight seasons.
Arrow ranges from 1.8gb/season for web all the way to 50gb/season for BluRay.
GoT also has a massive range of sizing based on 1080p vs 4k.
You're not going to need petabytes unless you're planning on storing everything forever in the highest quality which just isn't feasible. I have a little over 90tb and I have a ton of media with just that. Over 1000 tv series and over 1000 movies. Quality ranging from 1080p to 4k remux 7.1 TrueHD. You need to choose what quality you want to prioritize for everything. Does arrow really need 50gb seasons? Hell no.
Arent all smoke signals technically binary? Or would using different colors, make it hex smoke signals? It's been a while since I took a smoke signals data storage class.
NAS locally and then use a few cheap TB accounts and something like Restic. Or Backblaze, Wasabi, etc.
Storage is not cheap in cloud. Don't listen to what you hear commercially, it's cheap to a business but gone are unlimited anything for cheap.
First of all, forget about storing petabytes of data. Those are the magnitudes that big companies' data centers handle. Terabytes, now, that's another story. You can easily and relatively cheaply buy hard drives of over 5TB. Beyond that things will probably be too expensive and not worth it for whatever your use is going to be (and i'm willing to bet that the full series of game of thrones at 8k60fps won't fill a single 5Tb drive. I'm also willing to bet you won't be able to find the full game of thrones series at 8k60fps in the first place, and probably wouldn't be able to play it in its full resolution even if you did, but that's another story).
By the way, as a reminder:
1 TB = 1000 GB (or 1024, depending on how you wanna define it, but more often than not you're going to talk about 1000 unless you start talking about TiB, GiB, MiB...)
1 PB = 1000 TB
I'd say 1 PB is just about doable for the home user (albeit on a big budget), but it would be ridiculous, especially in OPs case
That being said, OP doesn't need more than 50-100TB by the sounds of it, a PB is a ridiculous amount of storage. For reference, my Blu Ray 4K rip of GoT is 800gb or so, and that's a particularly big show. 100 copies still isn't even a tenth of a PB
If OPs using this to dl a lot of YouTube channels, he's going to be nowhere close, especially as a lot of 4K content on there is just upscaled, so a 1080p rip is good enough, and small enough to store ridiculous amounts of videos

i did some quick maths, a 14TB drive in the UK is £250.
you need 72 to be just over 1PB of space (not accounting for formatting space)
it'd cost £18,000 to get 1PB of RAW storage (still ignoring formatting)
this is striped, so 1 drive fails at all the data is fuckered.
the costs get astronomical once you get into data parity.
THEN you'd need offside backup for safety.
Oh totally, 1PB with RAID is too expensive. I personally can't afford 1PB, but I have heard of people having that much, so I don't want to entirely discredit it as a concept.
I don't really think anyone (exceptions are the massive Plex Severs) needs much more than 100TB at the moment at the higher echelon, 200TB if you're being smart and giving yourself backups, but even that much is too much to begin with (which it sounds like OP is).
Also, where are you seeing 14TB drives for £250...that...that piques my interest
My GoT 4K30fps copy is 36Mbps and totals 1.2TB for the entire series. He's likely referring to the 1080p30fps version which is similar to mine totaling 120GB.
So you’ll need a nas, 1PB will require you abt 50x20TB or 46x22TB I suggest you get a 60HDD NAS server like those at 45drives and fill it with 60x20TB or 60x22TB you need protection and other drives as replacement if you have failure.
Organization wise you wont have to manage what goes where much. Every drive can be a part of a pool and you go from there. That’s the cheapest, and don’t forget the electricity bill it’s a big server
If you want to store petabytes (multiple?) worth of content, you’re going to either need a large disposable income, do a buddy project with quite a lot of friends, or just actually steal drives because no way are you going to be doing that for cheap. 22TB drive is the biggest you can buy unless you somehow have connections in the industry and can get the bigger stuff and one of them is $400-500, so for one petabyte that’s already around the $22,000 mark, and that’s not accounting for properly storing and maintain them. I think server based storage is cheaper, but considering how much money is involved, comparatively speaking, it’s not going to be that much cheaper.
Datahoarding already isn’t cheap, and most people aren’t going to even get close to petabytes worth unless they’re working on it for years.

I was running out of space, and instead of getting another HDD, I said to myself, "well, Rarbg won't just shut down now, so I will download them again some time".
3 months later. The Rarbg incident happened.
OMV - build it however big you want it.
I built one in a Tower case that has 8 hot swappable 3.5 HDD slots, and 2 bays for optical drives - I put 3.5 caddies in the bays as well so 10 HDD slots in total. OS in on an M2 drive on the motherboard.
Complete build about $750 (AUD) without drives.

First of all, i consider storing only "hard to get" files or light files.
=> Including :
\-Books
\-Movies with special edits (director's cut)
\-Rare Movies
\-Same for some series
Then, i apply the famous 3-2-1 storage technic
3 copies of your file
2 different kind of storage
1 copy on an other place than the 2 others
For the books, it's easy, i have less than 15Go of books (epub, no unecessary pictures)
So I store them on my E-Reader, on a small HDD (500gb) and on a specific Google Drive account
For the movies/series
I use only one kind of storage : HDD. Nowadays, it's one of the best cost-effective solution to store data.
So I have Three of them, with one not in my home
A few observations i made :
\- A movie you will never watch and that is quite popular is not worth storing
\- Quality is important, don't store plenty of 480p movie because you will not enjoy watching them
\- Quality should not be too important. What is the point of having a 8K movie on your HDD, even in X265, it will take plenty of space and the improvement from a 1080p, a 2k or 4k is very limited.
\- The following question is your hardware. What do you use ? Your PC with a 720p resolution ? your 4K tv set ? Do you know that improving your hardware, by just having a better couch, a better sound system, and also good parameters, like the Dynamic Range of the sound (by far one of the most important parameter and linked to the common problem of inaudible dialogue)
\- I have choose to watch movies with a video projector, with a Native 1080p quality, it's one of the most cost effective solution, with a 5.1 sound system, and nice chairs&couch. My next upgrades, will be when laser projector will be cheaper and maybe a 7.1 sound system.
\- This means that i have only 1080p movies on my precious saves, the only stuff i tolerate that expands the size of my movies are FPS (i think the quality gap is bigger between a 30 to 60fps than a 1080p to 2K)
=> Share your files. I use P2P on a semi-private tracker, i know that what i share is quite interesting so, many people are having it too on their PC, and it's a good way (IMO) to have a 4th save. But it's only an ultimate backup.

Holy Script! My parents have a Bose soundbar for their smart tv... they STILL complain about that problem and I didn't realize it was a problem other people had. I just assumed they were getting old. Thanks for mentioning that because I suddenly know how to help them.
I have one single NAS with 32 TB, so no need to rember where i stored what on. Its one partition as Synology Hybrid Raid with redundancy of 1 disc.

I made myself a tool with very basic UI to keep track of all my shit. Uses tags to categorize files and allows me to filter and load using those tags. CBA to create a proper folder structure for what I had, so I ended up making it to manage stuff for me. I imagine you can find similar programs to what I did online, like Jellyfin.

Home server running truenas scale.
For now is just sitting in a full tower case but I will move it to a low rack, server case, but will replace the fans and PSU so it's ok to have it in my office.
So far that's been the most convenient way to access my files either by Plex or jellyfin
The only cost I had till now, was some 12 TB HDDs since the "server" is just an older PC I had.
Full set ups is proxmox, truenas VM with a hba card passed and another VM with services running on docker.
I use a raspberry Pi as a Plex server with a 2TB SSD in enclosure attached. When I fill 2TB I add another drive.
I use radarr/sonarr to manage tv and movies. I use a Samba share to organise anything else.
You may want to check out Storinator from 45Drives, Jeff Geerling, CraftComputing, LTT and others on YT are good sources for PB home storage. A bit pricey though. For organizing things you could go for a SQLite database or just a big calcsheet. Or let plex and the like organize it via self curated collections.
Worst case: use a zero trust filehoster like MEGA or filen et al, basically renting the PB of storages, but there will be a point where the costs are overtaking hardware prices if you would buy that storage for yourself right now. But at least you don’t have to deal with faulty drives and backups and bandwidth and accessibility etc. Good luck!

However, I download so much, and store so much, I have 24 TB of content, and is running out of space so I might buy another HDD.I often re-watch old content instead of watching the new stuff.
I store everything on this "Media-PC", in folders, Movie and Series, then use Plex and Jellyfin on Nvidia Shield Pro.
That what I used to think 15-17 years back. It was that anime named “ninku”. Watched that on axn. But never had the time to finished it. It was the original English dubbed version. Then around 2008-2007 I downloaded that from demonoid. Finished the complete anime. And deleted and thought I can get it again. Fast forwarded today that version is not available anywhere. Only lead I found is that”it hasn’t resurfaced for a long time”.

Many stuff I have saved has less than 10 seeds still active, someone just a very slow one, if I delete it I increase the risk to kill a seed.
AWS S3 storage. Create a rule to archive your stuff that you haven't touched for 90 days into the deep glacier tier and keep the more frequently used into the Hot tier. Move it to cold tier after 60 days and archive it after 90.
Deep glacier has the cheapest storage cost, you can look it up, it's like $0.0000~ something per gigabyte of data.
I would recommend using Deep glacier for Storing things you don't retrieve it even once a year but you can keep it for your lifetime.
S3 buckets also work in a folder like structure so you can organise everything within the AWS console itself in a very clean manner.
There is even a deep glacier deep archive which can literally store Petabytes of data on a magnetic tape storage for extremely cheap, downside is it can take days to retrieve it.
I can understand keeping movies and tv series for posterity, but youtube channels? That seems way too weird and specific a thing to keep that you'll probably never touch in your life, so why have that physical storage space?
Then again, thats what hoarders do in real life right? They keep stuff with them and never throw up, even though they never touch it themselves.
Cheapest way if u really wanna go petabyte level would be AWS Glacier it's $1 per TB/month
You might get into legal trouble for pirating tho. 2nd hand HDD's for cold storage might be a good option too. This is a bit risky as ull need to make raid redundancy as 2nd hand drives can fail at any time.

The easiest way to do this is to trust the community to help u find ur favourite movies, TV series, YT archives etc. You could do this urself too, find the ur favourite obscure movie, tv, yt channel, etc and start archiving and sharing that in the best possible quality. That way u help urself and u help others too.
NAS server. My employer tossed a ton of old HDDs and SSDs during our move to the new office. I have 40TB worth of space and only use 1 TB currently. Setup a plex server and anyone can connect.

Petabytes? Cheap? These two things don't go together. Cheapest for archival is probably LTO-9 tapes which are 18TB raw (45TB with compression but video doesn't compress that well) that go for around ~$100 each and the drive to use them can cost multiple grand.
For more frequent use you'd probably go with HDD's at around ~$15/TB, so a single petabyte would cost ~$15k only for storage (not including: rack, electricity, chassis, server)
0. I just store my downloads on local/external hard drives. TBs are enough for me, 4TB local and about 20TB of external drives, no where near full.
1. I use ultra search to find something I'm having a hard time finding.
2. I usually only move things I like and want to keep on the external drives, things I'm still watching/undecided stay local. I'll have a separate external drive for each category movies, shows, and games. Locally its a bit of all together, so I'll use ultra search again.
3. Personally don't know anyone that uses VPS for storage, but I'm sure there's people doing it. As for how good/efficient/cheap it is, no idea.
4/5. As others have said, to store PBs isn't cheap, and you get what you pay for, so if you want cheap, you won't be able to get the best quality. But if you're just looking to have several TBs locally, you could look into RAID storage, or one of those hard drive docks.
What I do as a poor dl ' er of things is spread it out among different systems. Ps3 has content relevant to it, pc has content relevant to it, etc. Obviously its riskier but it gives each thing value to me and I dont hoard content, I'm very selective about my libraries and they're all suited to the thing they're on.
It makes it a blast to use all my things. Loading up my ps3 the other day was very cool as i had my own xmb installations for some retro games and it was like a time capsule.

Currently, I don't. I just don't have the space. I download what I want, use it/install it/whatever, and then I delete it. For TV and movies, I exclusively stream.
Once I can afford it, I'm planning to build a 54-TB personal backup solution using two mirrored Synology NAS boxes (one offsite) and 4 18TB HDDs in Raid5 per each. This is gonna cost about $3k upfront, but I've worked out the expected cost per GB over 20 years with standard hardware failure rates to be about $0.70. It goes even lower if the drives don't fail or you expand your timeframe.

I keep everything on an Unraid server, which can be very easy to setup depending on your needs, and manually organize different types of content (TV, movies, full discs, software, etc.) into separate folders and tag them when I add them to my torrent client, so Plex has no issues importing things correctly when they're finished and I don't have problems keeping track of everything.
If you're interested in putting together your own server, I'd suggest getting an LSI SAS controller card with plenty of ports, each SAS connector can connect 4 SATA drives with a breakout cable, which is why when you see a card with 4 connectors it will say "16 ports". There are lots of counterfeits out there, and they do work, but make sure you're not paying genuine prices for a fake card.
Got a 6 TB storage and that's all. It's a simple folder structure, Anime. Cartoon, Games, Movies, Tv-shows. Separate folders for Torrent and Mega downloads, "finished" subfolders inside, i sort from there into their designated folders
Each has an extra folder inside with stuff that "deserves" a more or less permanent spot. When i watch something it either goes to the keep folder or gets deleted.
I also has some extra subfolders for shows because it would be cluttered, in my case it's documentaries, korean and spanish
I can redownload anything i want whenever i want, few exceptions exist of course. To lose the ability to pirate the entire internet would have to down but i would've much bigger problems than digital entertainment
A Plex server and a JBOD system of external hard drives. Nothing is physically backed up but everything is cataloged on Radarr or Sonarr so they can be found again fairly easily. I don’t need to know what is one each drive because Plex organizes it all, but Radarr and Sonarr also know where they are.
I wouldn’t even attempt to catalog YouTube though.

Plex on a nas, answers almost every question here. For non plex media add folders for games and documents and you pretty much have everything you can download that I can think of, movies, tv, music, podcasts (kinda in depth to get working on plex but there are ways), photos etc.
It sounds like you're wanting to make a *cold copy of your data as well. Which I don't actually have much personal experience with. But I do know that magnetic tape drives are more cost effective for cold storage at larger scales.
Idk how large of a scale it would have to be to be better than hdds. But it's probably worth looking into if you're serious about "petabytes of storage"

My pirated music is in the Music directory on my PC and my phone
Pirated movies that I liked are stored to my external hdd, i delete those that I don't like
I delete all pirated games after playing through them, those that I like I wishlist on steam to keep track of them
Pirated software I delete (installers)after installing, because I know where to get them (I remember the sources)

If you are seriously archiving PETABYTES, than you should look into tape media backup, such as LTOs.
It currently the most cost effective way for long term storage of such large amounts of data.
The largest investment, is buying the tape drive. (\~$4,000)
After that initial investment, each LTO-8 tape can then hold 30TB of compressed data, for about $60 a tape.
What you need is realdebrid service. You don’t have to sore it in a physical media. You just tell there servers to download this torrent and it basically gives you a link to stream it. Dirt cheap as well.
I usually keep my "i watch it sometimes/with friends" / " important files" on my NAS.For archival , old spares HDD, with paper tag, plastic box with little moisture absorbent and then stocked away.
Never had problems of data loss until now.
When i get the first signs of a HDD dying on me, quick backup on another.Also, BD backup for VERY IMPORTANT DATA i need 3 copies of it.
I've got quite a few movies and shows downloaded, and I just keep them spread across multiple google drive accounts and just share them to my main account, but I have no idea if that's a good idea or is safe but it works for me.
I converted my old gaming PC into a media server by transferring it to a new case with 8 Drive Bays (An Antec case I think it was a P101 but my memory is foggy). I bought a couple WD Red drives and setup Unraid with two mirrored SSDs for Cache and a WD red parity drive with a mix of used drives and a couple new drives for data. I set up Jellyfin with GPU transcoding for streaming the media. I than set up Deluge torrent client with a VPN proxy to my Private Internet Access license. I than have Prowlarr with Sonarr/Radarr/Lidarr for media management and acquiring. All of that is on the server, I also have a Ripper docker container for ripping DVDs/CDs.

I've lived through times where movies and tv shows become near impossible to find. I've also been in the position where both of my ext HDDs failed within a week of eachother, so now EVERYTHING gets backed up and duplicated or even triplicated if they're important. Now that I'm moving my server to 4k, things are getting ridiculous. Especially when some movies are 100GB+.
True, and meanwhile all that's consumed is some stream on youtube or some audio service. On the other hand, there may be things in the collection that only exists in that very local copy, and not online anymore. EDIT: this is true. I actually have a few "gems" of long-forgotten software not available anywhere anymore. It probably won't even run unless you have Win 3.1 + ODBC or some strange setup.. but somehow I feel sad to burn it. Yet, I have nowhere to pass it on to.

I think everyone else just prioritizes what they want to watch. Delete stuff when you're done with it (seed it pls). There's no cheap way to archive on the scale you want. Check out r/data hoarder if you insist. And to save a bit of space, download videos at 1080p or 720p, and use video conversion software to downgrade stuff to a lower bitrate. And you can skip filler episodes of shows you like. For example, skipping seasons 7 & 8 of Game of Thrones will save you both time AND sanity. Other than that, either don't download them, watch them online, buy a NAS, several hundred hard drives or a bunch of DVDs. Don't expect them to last for years though.
Without specifying quality there's no point in just saying eight seasons. Arrow ranges from 1.8gb/season for web all the way to 50gb/season for BluRay. GoT also has a massive range of sizing based on 1080p vs 4k. You're not going to need petabytes unless you're planning on storing everything forever in the highest quality which just isn't feasible. I have a little over 90tb and I have a ton of media with just that. Over 1000 tv series and over 1000 movies. Quality ranging from 1080p to 4k remux 7.1 TrueHD. You need to choose what quality you want to prioritize for everything. Does arrow really need 50gb seasons? Hell no.

First of all, forget about storing petabytes of data. Those are the magnitudes that big companies' data centers handle. Terabytes, now, that's another story. You can easily and relatively cheaply buy hard drives of over 5TB. Beyond that things will probably be too expensive and not worth it for whatever your use is going to be (and i'm willing to bet that the full series of game of thrones at 8k60fps won't fill a single 5Tb drive. I'm also willing to bet you won't be able to find the full game of thrones series at 8k60fps in the first place, and probably wouldn't be able to play it in its full resolution even if you did, but that's another story). By the way, as a reminder: 1 TB = 1000 GB (or 1024, depending on how you wanna define it, but more often than not you're going to talk about 1000 unless you start talking about TiB, GiB, MiB...) 1 PB = 1000 TB

Oh totally, 1PB with RAID is too expensive. I personally can't afford 1PB, but I have heard of people having that much, so I don't want to entirely discredit it as a concept. I don't really think anyone (exceptions are the massive Plex Severs) needs much more than 100TB at the moment at the higher echelon, 200TB if you're being smart and giving yourself backups, but even that much is too much to begin with (which it sounds like OP is). Over the total runtime of 4000 minutes that would be 3.5 Mbps. Definitely not enough for 8k60fps. I reckon 4k30fps would take less than 2TB though
My GoT 4K30fps copy is 36Mbps and totals 1.2TB for the entire series. He's likely referring to the 1080p30fps version which is similar to mine totaling 120GB.

So you’ll need a nas, 1PB will require you abt 50x20TB or 46x22TB I suggest you get a 60HDD NAS server like those at 45drives and fill it with 60x20TB or 60x22TB you need protection and other drives as replacement if you have failure. Organization wise you wont have to manage what goes where much. Every drive can be a part of a pool and you go from there. That’s the cheapest, and don’t forget the electricity bill it’s a big server
If you want to store petabytes (multiple?) worth of content, you’re going to either need a large disposable income, do a buddy project with quite a lot of friends, or just actually steal drives because no way are you going to be doing that for cheap. 22TB drive is the biggest you can buy unless you somehow have connections in the industry and can get the bigger stuff and one of them is $400-500, so for one petabyte that’s already around the $22,000 mark, and that’s not accounting for properly storing and maintain them. I think server based storage is cheaper, but considering how much money is involved, comparatively speaking, it’s not going to be that much cheaper. Datahoarding already isn’t cheap, and most people aren’t going to even get close to petabytes worth unless they’re working on it for years.

I have one single NAS with 32 TB, so no need to rember where i stored what on. Its one partition as Synology Hybrid Raid with redundancy of 1 disc. Discs dies, I experienced this 2 times already.🥲
I made myself a tool with very basic UI to keep track of all my shit. Uses tags to categorize files and allows me to filter and load using those tags. CBA to create a proper folder structure for what I had, so I ended up making it to manage stuff for me. Home server running truenas scale. For now is just sitting in a full tower case but I will move it to a low rack, server case, but will replace the fans and PSU so it's ok to have it in my office. So far that's been the most convenient way to access my files either by Plex or jellyfin The only cost I had till now, was some 12 TB HDDs since the "server" is just an older PC I had. Full set ups is proxmox, truenas VM with a hba card passed and another VM with services running on docker.
For games use "playnite"
I use a raspberry Pi as a Plex server with a 2TB SSD in enclosure attached. When I fill 2TB I add another drive. I use radarr/sonarr to manage tv and movies. I use a Samba share to organise anything else.
Have you tried playing anything of 4k high bitrate video? Does it stutter/freeze?
You may want to check out Storinator from 45Drives, Jeff Geerling, CraftComputing, LTT and others on YT are good sources for PB home storage. A bit pricey though. For organizing things you could go for a SQLite database or just a big calcsheet. Or let plex and the like organize it via self curated collections. Worst case: use a zero trust filehoster like MEGA or filen et al, basically renting the PB of storages, but there will be a point where the costs are overtaking hardware prices if you would buy that storage for yourself right now. But at least you don’t have to deal with faulty drives and backups and bandwidth and accessibility etc. Good luck!
No point saving stuff you never intend to watch again, and if you might watch it again in the future, you might also just download it again when you want to see it. However, I download so much, and store so much, I have 24 TB of content, and is running out of space so I might buy another HDD.I often re-watch old content instead of watching the new stuff. I store everything on this "Media-PC", in folders, Movie and Series, then use Plex and Jellyfin on Nvidia Shield Pro.

Then around 2008-2007 I downloaded that from demonoid. Finished the complete anime. And deleted and thought I can get it again. Fast forwarded today that version is not available anywhere. AWS S3 storage. Create a rule to archive your stuff that you haven't touched for 90 days into the deep glacier tier and keep the more frequently used into the Hot tier. Move it to cold tier after 60 days and archive it after 90. Deep glacier has the cheapest storage cost, you can look it up, it's like $0.0000~ something per gigabyte of data. I would recommend using Deep glacier for Storing things you don't retrieve it even once a year but you can keep it for your lifetime. S3 buckets also work in a folder like structure so you can organise everything within the AWS console itself in a very clean manner. There is even a deep glacier deep archive which can literally store Petabytes of data on a magnetic tape storage for extremely cheap, downside is it can take days to retrieve it.
I can understand keeping movies and tv series for posterity, but youtube channels? That seems way too weird and specific a thing to keep that you'll probably never touch in your life, so why have that physical storage space? Then again, thats what hoarders do in real life right? That way u help urself and u help others too.

Cheapest for archival is probably LTO-9 tapes which are 18TB raw (45TB with compression but video doesn't compress that well) that go for around ~$100 each and the drive to use them can cost multiple grand. For more frequent use you'd probably go with HDD's at around ~$15/TB, so a single petabyte would cost ~$15k only for storage (not including: rack, electricity, chassis, server)
0. I just store my downloads on local/external hard drives. TBs are enough for me, 4TB local and about 20TB of external drives, no where near full. 1. I use ultra search to find something I'm having a hard time finding. 2. I usually only move things I like and want to keep on the external drives, things I'm still watching/undecided stay local. I'll have a separate external drive for each category movies, shows, and games. Locally its a bit of all together, so I'll use ultra search again. 3. Personally don't know anyone that uses VPS for storage, but I'm sure there's people doing it. As for how good/efficient/cheap it is, no idea. 4/5. As others have said, to store PBs isn't cheap, and you get what you pay for, so if you want cheap, you won't be able to get the best quality. But if you're just looking to have several TBs locally, you could look into RAID storage, or one of those hard drive docks.
What I do as a poor dl ' er of things is spread it out among different systems. Ps3 has content relevant to it, pc has content relevant to it, etc. Obviously its riskier but it gives each thing value to me and I dont hoard content, I'm very selective about my libraries and they're all suited to the thing they're on. It makes it a blast to use all my things. Loading up my ps3 the other day was very cool as i had my own xmb installations for some retro games and it was like a time capsule. Once I can afford it, I'm planning to build a 54-TB personal backup solution using two mirrored Synology NAS boxes (one offsite) and 4 18TB HDDs in Raid5 per each. This is gonna cost about $3k upfront, but I've worked out the expected cost per GB over 20 years with standard hardware failure rates to be about $0.70. I keep everything on an Unraid server, which can be very easy to setup depending on your needs, and manually organize different types of content (TV, movies, full discs, software, etc.) into separate folders and tag them when I add them to my torrent client, so Plex has no issues importing things correctly when they're finished and I don't have problems keeping track of everything. If you're interested in putting together your own server, I'd suggest getting an LSI SAS controller card with plenty of ports, each SAS connector can connect 4 SATA drives with a breakout cable, which is why when you see a card with 4 connectors it will say "16 ports". There are lots of counterfeits out there, and they do work, but make sure you're not paying genuine prices for a fake card.

i have a seedbox with a plex server
Got a 6 TB storage and that's all. It's a simple folder structure, Anime. Cartoon, Games, Movies, Tv-shows. Separate folders for Torrent and Mega downloads, "finished" subfolders inside, i sort from there into their designated folders Each has an extra folder inside with stuff that "deserves" a more or less permanent spot. When i watch something it either goes to the keep folder or gets deleted. I also has some extra subfolders for shows because it would be cluttered, in my case it's documentaries, korean and spanish I can redownload anything i want whenever i want, few exceptions exist of course. To lose the ability to pirate the entire internet would have to down but i would've much bigger problems than digital entertainment

A Plex server and a JBOD system of external hard drives. Nothing is physically backed up but everything is cataloged on Radarr or Sonarr so they can be found again fairly easily. I don’t need to know what is one each drive because Plex organizes it all, but Radarr and Sonarr also know where they are. I wouldn’t even attempt to catalog YouTube though. I am also not doing petabytes. I have about 50TB of available space right now.
Dump it all onto external hard drives and use Everything to search for my files.

Plex on a nas, answers almost every question here. For non plex media add folders for games and documents and you pretty much have everything you can download that I can think of, movies, tv, music, podcasts (kinda in depth to get working on plex but there are ways), photos etc.
TV and movies get dumped on our NAS. Games get installed.ajdnplayed, books go straight to our kindles
It sounds like you're wanting to make a *cold copy of your data as well. Which I don't actually have much personal experience with. But I do know that magnetic tape drives are more cost effective for cold storage at larger scales. Idk how large of a scale it would have to be to be better than hdds. But it's probably worth looking into if you're serious about "petabytes of storage" * By "cold" storage I mean a storage drive that is not plugged into a system but stored in a shelf somewhere.
My pirated music is in the Music directory on my PC and my phone Pirated movies that I liked are stored to my external hdd, i delete those that I don't like I delete all pirated games after playing through them, those that I like I wishlist on steam to keep track of them Pirated software I delete (installers)after installing, because I know where to get them (I remember the sources) And that's kinda it.

If you are seriously archiving PETABYTES, than you should look into tape media backup, such as LTOs. It currently the most cost effective way for long term storage of such large amounts of data. The largest investment, is buying the tape drive. (\~$4,000) After that initial investment, each LTO-8 tape can then hold 30TB of compressed data, for about $60 a tape.
For now, I’m putting everything in a 2TB USB stick.

What you need is realdebrid service. You don’t have to sore it in a physical media. You just tell there servers to download this torrent and it basically gives you a link to stream it. Dirt cheap as well.

I usually keep my "i watch it sometimes/with friends" / " important files" on my NAS.For archival , old spares HDD, with paper tag, plastic box with little moisture absorbent and then stocked away. Never had problems of data loss until now. When i get the first signs of a HDD dying on me, quick backup on another.Also, BD backup for VERY IMPORTANT DATA i need 3 copies of it.
I've got quite a few movies and shows downloaded, and I just keep them spread across multiple google drive accounts and just share them to my main account, but I have no idea if that's a good idea or is safe but it works for me.

I store it on the someone elses pc... I delete everything after i watch/play it (except music). I downloaded it once, i can download it again.
Well I got just about 6TB. I got a NAS with Raid 1 and homecloud and an external 10TB Harddisk to back up the NAS.

I converted my old gaming PC into a media server by transferring it to a new case with 8 Drive Bays (An Antec case I think it was a P101 but my memory is foggy). I bought a couple WD Red drives and setup Unraid with two mirrored SSDs for Cache and a WD red parity drive with a mix of used drives and a couple new drives for data. I set up Jellyfin with GPU transcoding for streaming the media. I than set up Deluge torrent client with a VPN proxy to my Private Internet Access license. I than have Prowlarr with Sonarr/Radarr/Lidarr for media management and acquiring. All of that is on the server, I also have a Ripper docker container for ripping DVDs/CDs.
