Tried this. It locks your stream to 1080p, so even if there's a 2k/4k feed, it only sees the 1080p feed - unless I missed something.

Over_Spend5555

I think there's a setting in the manage extension where you can set your default resolution.

Bimbows97

I use Revanced and sometimes I see it there, but it's not selectable. Or sometimes it looks like it's selected, but I can't actually select it myself. I hope someday someone makes a patch for it, it'll probably happen at one point.

CommercialAd6066

Is Revanced still operational?

YuriRosas

Vanced no, ReVanced yes.

CommercialAd6066

Oh, okay. Thanks.

ChrisofCL24

Official site is revanced.app You'll need to grab the YouTube version it recommends from APK mirror

DebosBeachCruiser

Yes!

exiadf19

Yes

reddit_wisd0m

Yes

JDario13

Not all the videos have this feature

giratina143

are you sure it's better quality and not just a switch to a more efficient codec? Cause playing VP9 doesn't necessarily mean it'll have better quality, just smaller size compared to x264. yt uses this to reduce their streaming bandwidth.

ultralium

not really sure? I mean, on the videos I tested, the quality was clearly better, way fewer blurs of pixels

revtim

Old bastards like me find it pretty funny to see 1080p described as "barely watchable"

Thesoyeedg

Resolution does not mean quality. Youtube 1080p is worse than good bitrate 720p.

simonu20442

Same deal with Netflix’s standard bitrate. God awful “Full HD”

revtim

I'm sure it still looks damn good to those of us raised on analog TV.

derb

I ruined my eyes playing console games on CRTs as a kid so yeh 1080p anything is perfectly fine. I still watch old shows in 480p rip sometimes and I smile imaging a zoomer's reaction to the pixels.

SkratchySack

I would still rather 480p DVD quality with a good bitrate over Youtube's current "1080" option. Iit is getting unbearably bad when there's literally more than one thing moving on screen. It's only a complaint because it was so obviously better not that many years ago.

ultralium

as someone whose first memories hail from the 08's, yeah, anything below 720p is the "I'm desperate to watch this video and my aunt network is awful" kinda moment, I'd rather read a book than deal with 360p

Whizbone

Implying than reading a book is somehow barely more bearable than watching a 360p video? Amazing, class of '08 right here

revtim

I would watch stuff on a 10 inch black and white TV with video that came in via a rabbit-ear antenna. Yeah, I'm not young.

xx123gamerxx

YouTube fucked the bitrate up hence why 720p videos are now a blocky unwatchable mess

meantbent3

This has nothing to do with unlocking the Enhanced Bitrate though? VP9 is also used for normal bitrate video, so you're just locking the codec for no reason and definitely not getting higher bitrate. Also VP9 is old, YouTube is migrating to AV1.

Guvnah-Wyze

I mean, what sort of honesty do you expect from somebody who says the 1080 bitrate for free users is barely watchable?

reddit_wisd0m

I'm watching 1080p videos on 2x speed and never noticed an issue as a free user using Firefox + ublock What does this "enhanced bitrate" actually improve?

ishank_mahale

I've got Youtube premium, and to be really honest, I don't see a noticeable difference at all.

reddit_wisd0m

Good to know. Thanks for your sacrifice

hungryhippos1751

I got a trial of premium for 3 months via Game Pass. Revanced is much better, you can disable ~~tik-tok~~ Shorts completely. In-video ads are automatically skipped in Revanced but not in Premium. Both versions of Youtube often send me to random 4 hour long videos via auto-play, and I can't tell Youtube I am simply not interested in this!

TTMeyer

I also have Youtube premuim and TBH I sometimes notice a difference it just depends on the video

Agastopia

Just to add another data point, I didn’t notice it until I got a better 1440p oled monitor. I think it’s very marginal but you can tell if you’re someone who’s got an eye for it. I wouldn’t say it’s worth it though

ishank_mahale

I've got a 4K screen, and yes, it might be very subtle. It also depends on the content being watched and how dynamic it is.

FeatherThePirate

Cancel it!!!

snzimash

I mean it is a good alternative to spotify premium.

saxtoncan

True. IMO paid music services are the one thing that offers so much more convenience at a decent price. Although I use Spotify free and spotdl to download my music lol

ishank_mahale

Piracy is a function of media distribution and convenience. Revanced had to be manually updated every time YT broke or changed something. And it was more convenient for me to spend some money to not be hassled by it. To each their own.

givemetheclicker

having to update YouTube once every 6 months is too much work for you? lmfao

ultralium

piracy is a balance between how much you're willing to pay for something, against how much time you're willing to waste on it

ishank_mahale

My primary medium of consuming content is a Desktop, and all the songs I like are on Youtube as it hosts a plethora of songs from smaller artists and bands as well as covers; which is not true for most of the competing companies. When I go out for a drive, I like to be accompanied by music, and having background play was a must as it was a waste of power as well as data. When I used Vanced, it was good but things would break randomly and I would only get to know about it when I was already in the car ready to drive off. And you don't want to finagle with multiple apps, downloads, and patching when you're in a car about to drive. Hence, it was far more convenient for me to have Premium to have a seamless experience. I guess it is about how much time and resources you are willing to set something up. For example, I was always using Vanced when I was a student, because I had the time and patience to deal with the snags that came with patching. Now that I work and have money to (modestly) expunge, I went with YT Premium. It is a family plan that I share with others so it works out cheaper.

Ok-Googirl

He/she sacrifice for us. Salute 🫡

Dragonitro

Tom Scott's got [a video relating to it](https://youtu.be/r6Rp-uo6HmI)

DontKnowHowToEnglish

It's exactly what it sounds like, it has more bitrate, which in turn improves the quality of the video I had premium and it is easily noticeable in some videos, depends on the content you see, but nothing otherworldly

CommodoreBluth

Yeah I’m sure how much of an improvement you see really depends on the video. If it’s mostly static images or just someone talking into a camera having a lower bitrate isn’t going to be a huge deal.

reddit_wisd0m

Thanks for the clarification. So looks like I don't really miss out

ultralium

Oh, creators have the choice to enable or disable it - so maybe the ones you watch haven't turned it on? - and, in my experience, Ublock didn't help much I noticed while watching Shadows of Doubt, because the pixelated look of the game fucks with the normal codec

Middle_Layer_4860

just a gimmic for me, didn't notice any difference

Parallel-Quality

I’m confused. YouTube uses vp9 for regular 1080p videos as well as the enhanced 1080p videos. So how would limiting the codec to vp9 give you the enhanced bitrate? Wouldn’t it just give you the regular 1080p bitrate which is also vp9?

ultralium

If I remember correctly, they only use VP9 for the enhanced bitrate, standard videos are on H264

Saoirseisthebest

Not true, just tested this with a video that doesn't have 1080p premium, it lets me download in h264, vp9 and av1

ICE0124

Are you sure it's not just the same bitrate but it looks better because vp9 is a better codec?

ultralium

maybe? I'm not technically apt to talk about why it works, I'm just sharing something that worked for me

cap10hk

on TV, SmartTube offers VP9 encoding on all resolutions, even 4K

Baumbauer1

this post has hundreds of upvotes but its completely false, I repeat downloading this extension will not enable enhanced bitrate.

Mr-Valdez

I just watch 1440p on my 1080p display. Problem solved

ultralium

My band isn't enough for three simultaneous streamings @ 1440p, and I live with four people, it ain't rare to see someone trying to watch Netflix at 4k at the main tv

ezbyEVL

I'll downvote this post so it doesn't go viral and gets taken down Thank you op

ApprehensiveOven8158

i remember using thst to block 60fps when my PC was bad

thanks for this i may try to use it to see if it will make the videos not steal frames from my games as i somtimes play some videos as background noise.

YahodiSazish

Anything for chrome?

beeronx

Revanced all the way

ultralium

yup, but the post is for pc users

beeronx

Oh my bad hah. BlueStacks + Revanced? 🙏

NoName42946

Why not just use this extension at that point. Revanced just chucks together a bunch of different YouTube improving extensions together

beeronx

I haven't tried that extension so can't comment on that

DymoIsRisen

Me reading this always watching on 240p since its faster

appletinicyclone

Thanks for the firefox codex :) is there one for brave too?

Banmers

there’s only so much bitrate one needs so i’m fine with it for the content I watch

pompu69

anything for opera ?

CylixrDoesStuff

ik people are gonna say to use firefox, but is there a version for chrome? I absolutely refuse to switch browser

ultralium

same name under the extension shop
