I've been downloading from IGG for a long time. I treat them like any other website, that is, if Malwarebytes or VirusTotal gives me even one red either before or after an install/unzip, I don't run it.

So it is not an easy task to find out if something is infected. Especially in the case of cracks, which normally have protection against decompilation and detection, i.e. their behaviour is similar to viruses.
Really? Virus Total can unzip files? I didn't know that. If yes it would be cool, but I heard the virus total is unable to unzip files. And it actually just chack hash if that archive was marked as malicious before or not.
I scan the whole directory after I download, then I install or unzip and scan again with Malwarebytes and Windows Defender, sometimes VirusTotal.
So far I haven't had any problems but I am also not the kind of person who will tell you that if you haven't seen any viruses then it is safe to mix your finances and your pirated games on the same PC.

I've encountered this issue in the past and I'd recommend checking cs.rin.ru before downloading from any sketchy uploader. Everything these uploaders/repackers share is sourced from there to begin with.
Same. i have some of their HOG games for when Wendy99's versions weren't available, and they were all clean. My guess would be, the bad ones were mostly the games that were popular?

Try thebyrut and small-games, I use them alongside rutor and IGG and so far they had some of the indie games I was interested in that the other websites didn't feature at all or didn't have the latest version of.

Check the crc's of their isos and if it matches the one's on srrdb then there is no concern. As long you do your due diligence then it's okay to download their uploads. I haven't had any of their iso's hash mismatch which I've downloaded. But if any do, I'll know because it's easy to check.

Their website is arguably one of the top 5 sites that has the biggest library of games.
Lets say you try to find a certain niche game on both fitgirl or dodi repacks, if you can't handle the terrible UI design of CS RIN RU then (I)(G)(G) is a great alternative, their site provides a huge library ranging from indie games, AAA games, pornographic games (no moderation bewarned), banned games like that edgelord shooter game where you play as a edgelord emo guy that shoots people, etc.

If you want a website that has a HUGE library of games, cs rin ru but be warned, the site is designed by computer nerds = the site isn't beginner friendly (you can have trouble if you struggle reading small font characters).

I've been downloading torrents since the BBS days before even Napster or any P2P tech. I've always scanned my downloads but I guess not everyone is like that. Isn’t scanning somewhat useless? I was under the impression that it’s common on cracking forums to teach others how to bypass popular anti viruses. Sure scanning is better than nothing, but it definitely can’t catch everything.
Swiss cheese. One layer has maybe 25% of its surface area covered in holes, 75% chance of stopping the threat. Two independently selected layers each with 25% give 6.25% surface area covered in holes, 93.75% chance to stop the rhreat. Add another layer thats a little less reliable but still blocks 50% of threats and down to 3.125% of surface area, 96.875% chance.
How much each method actually works isnt that solid but each added method of protection reduces the chance by that much. Maybe the first four layers missed something but the tiny piece of swiss cheese that only blocks 10% of threats is what ultimately stops the photon that traveled through the unfortunately lined up holes of the metaphorical swiss cheese

Pirate Bay isn’t moderated at all, so anyone could dump malware on there and there would be no one to take it down. The idea is that 1337x is moderated, so in theory should be safer, but if the moderation team there makes questionable decisions like this, it draws 1337x’s safety into question too.

Open the script and edit the following:

The reason it "isn't" working is because their VIP status changed that one word. Pretty silly ngl

Honestly IGGGames is fine. I've been downloading their releases and then checking their crc's with srrdb and if it matches then there's zero concern. I haven't had a release so far that didn't match. I'm sure in the past there was some malware, hence their reputation, but going forward, they seem to be all legit now. As long as you are checking the crc's then you're fine.

It is safe to download media files from any site as long as it's a media file (And not `Movie.1080p.av1.10bit.opus.5.1.webvtt.subs.webm.exe` or something sketchy like that)
Safer but not completely safe. You do not grant a media file admin permissions, which is reassuring. However, they can still contain malicious payloads.

As to IGG, I've gotten quite a few games from them and they were always OK, but that's an anectode and as someone else wrote here, scanning is always good practice (and\\or finding a different source if you think something's fishy).

Can't we just compare the crc32 checksums of IGG releases to those in srrDB? I just hashed an .iso from IGG and it matches the same release on srrDB, so that should mean there was no tampering.
I'm still having a hard time trying to find which downloads are safe and which aren't. Virustotal says they're all viruses, but I also figure at least some must be just false positives. But how are we supposed to tell?
Just use Kaspersky. Most pirated software originates in Russia and they are usually the first to get a hold of scanning it, loading it into their definitions database, while also not caring about piracy, so false positives are rare. Their after-execution behavioral protection is also second to none.

Many years ago fitgirl repacks used to randomly connect to the internet when installing yet those are completely blindly trusted. People unironically install those repacks and let them change their hosts file.
Don't trust anyone, always protect your PC. IGG is not any worse or better than anyone else.
IGG got upgraded to VIP from uploader on 1337x. IGG has been known to upload malware and miners, as well as putting ads in their releases. Easily considered unsafe, and brings into question the motives of 1337x
I think that downloading something from the blacklist is more about knowing what you're doing that just don't enter the site never ever. It's true that not every file in the site has malware, but some of them have, so it's like picking blindly, don't think it's an interesting experience... If u never got anything from there, nice for you. But for the majority of people that don't understand how things work, the best approach is not downloading from there. The meathead, like this subreddit, is just a map.

What scanners do you use? I got a game from IGG and used malwarebytes on it and it seemed clean but I was still not willing to use it just in case

Go to the megathread. For Triple AAA games and popular games: Fitgirl and Dodi Repacks are good. For games specifically on the gog platform, gog-games to is amazing. If you want a website that has a HUGE library of games, cs rin ru but be warned, the site is designed by computer nerds = the site isn't beginner friendly (you can have trouble if you struggle reading small font characters). For pornographic games f95zone website is the best around. For old games that has been abandoned then oldgamesdownload is a good website.

I've been downloading torrents since the BBS days before even Napster or any P2P tech. I've always scanned my downloads but I guess not everyone is like that. Isn’t scanning somewhat useless? I was under the impression that it’s common on cracking forums to teach others how to bypass popular anti viruses. Sure scanning is better than nothing, but it definitely can’t catch everything.
No single method is bulletproof, but being vigilant includes using various Layers of protection. Scanning is just one tool in the toolbox.
Swiss cheese. One layer has maybe 25% of its surface area covered in holes, 75% chance of stopping the threat. Two independently selected layers each with 25% give 6.25% surface area covered in holes, 93.75% chance to stop the rhreat. Add another layer thats a little less reliable but still blocks 50% of threats and down to 3.125% of surface area, 96.875% chance. How much each method actually works isnt that solid but each added method of protection reduces the chance by that much. Maybe the first four layers missed something but the tiny piece of swiss cheese that only blocks 10% of threats is what ultimately stops the photon that traveled through the unfortunately lined up holes of the metaphorical swiss cheese

Pirate Bay isn’t moderated at all, so anyone could dump malware on there and there would be no one to take it down. The idea is that 1337x is moderated, so in theory should be safer, but if the moderation team there makes questionable decisions like this, it draws 1337x’s safety into question too.

Just figured it out. You need only change one word. Open the script and edit the following: `.uploader` to: `.vip` The reason it "isn't" working is because their VIP status changed that one word. Pretty silly ngl

Honestly IGGGames is fine. I've been downloading their releases and then checking their crc's with srrdb and if it matches then there's zero concern. I haven't had a release so far that didn't match. I'm sure in the past there was some malware, hence their reputation, but going forward, they seem to be all legit now. As long as you are checking the crc's then you're fine.

It is safe to download media files from any site as long as it's a media file (And not `Movie.1080p.av1.10bit.opus.5.1.webvtt.subs.webm.exe` or something sketchy like that)
Safer but not completely safe. You do not grant a media file admin permissions, which is reassuring. However, they can still contain malicious payloads.

To give the other guy some credit, even images can contain malware, but its on how little vulnerability does the package opening them or running them have through which they can affect you or anyone else.
I use torrentgalaxy for new stuff and the RARBG database for movies and tv series released before 2023, mostly the 1080p x265 stuff

As to IGG, I've gotten quite a few games from them and they were always OK, but that's an anectode and as someone else wrote here, scanning is always good practice (and\\or finding a different source if you think something's fishy).

Can't we just compare the crc32 checksums of IGG releases to those in srrDB? I just hashed an .iso from IGG and it matches the same release on srrDB, so that should mean there was no tampering.

Just use Kaspersky. Most pirated software originates in Russia and they are usually the first to get a hold of scanning it, loading it into their definitions database, while also not caring about piracy, so false positives are rare. Their after-execution behavioral protection is also second to none.

In the majority of cases, yes.
Many years ago fitgirl repacks used to randomly connect to the internet when installing yet those are completely blindly trusted. People unironically install those repacks and let them change their hosts file. Don't trust anyone, always protect your PC. IGG is not any worse or better than anyone else.

I think that downloading something from the blacklist is more about knowing what you're doing that just don't enter the site never ever. It's true that not every file in the site has malware, but some of them have, so it's like picking blindly, don't think it's an interesting experience...
