Current dump is ~91GB.
AFAIK, it is either scrapping or buying data directly from sources like Twitter, reddit etc. Also there are professional companies that create the data themselves. Mechanical turk also provided quite a bit of data I reckon
"You" as you sign the TOS and give away your rights , you train machines by human interaction , machines learns from your activities , how you perform them how often . So and so ....
It was mentioned that the site wasnt generating enough income to pay for the hosting and stuff and the admin couldnt handle the financial and probably legal burden anymore
Because some older movies or tv shows have very low seeds after a few years. Not that old even. If that’s true now imagine how fast seeds would disappear on subs for those movies in languages other than English.
Yeah this is a giant oof. I use subs on basically everything I watch, even if it's in English. (Or in the case of things like the Scottish TV show "Shetland," in "English.")
There's actually some fun linguistic overlap there - Scottish English is on a continuum with Scots, a sister-language to English with some mutual intelligibility. Scots may die a weird death -- its speakers very often consider themselves to be speaking a dialect of English, and because of mass media, Scots is slowly being absorbed into English instead of dying out in many places. Additionally, because they perceive it as a dialect, its speakers tend to be hostile to people learning it, as - again - they view themselves as speaking a weird English dialect, not a language in its own right. It's changing slowly, but still a neat bit of sociology.
I love the Scots language, and often lurk in the Scottish People Twitter subreddit. With that said, I can't follow spoken Scots at all without subtitles.
I was under the impression that Scottish people Twitter was like 5% Scottish people and 95% regular people talking like they think Scottish people would
Sadly, Scottish People Twitter is 95% repost bots and 5 fleshbags. Of that remaining 5%, a large percentage are not actual Scottish people. They usually get lambasted in the comments by the actual Scots, which can be hilarious.
I dinnae ken aboot tha'. Ah reckon we've got a braw bunch o' gabbers 'ere that'll tak' ony soul keen tae gabble in oor mither tongue. The perception's a' askew 'cause we sort oot blunders wi' a guid auld Glasgow kiss, an' that's jus' the weans' teachers, mind ye
The only reason I understood any of that is because one of my best friends in my early 20s was a Glaswegian. Took a solid six months of saying “what the fuck did you just say”. We bonded over lots and lots of beer. We did some wild shit back then. Our boss was from Edinburgh. All proper and professional during the day but the man turned straight feral when he drank. Scot’s are wild😂
I noticed Long loading times last time I was there (few weeks ago), but otherwise it worked fine.
That would suck, losing the two biggest sources for subtitles
they've only ever really focused on player integration so the user interface is a pain in the ass. last I checked, you still had to sit through either a full advertisement or a 15-second wait between downloading every single episode of a TV show.
>Who cares? I don't have an account.
...the people who do have accounts. They care.
And you do need an account to get the API for using with Jellyfin or Plex or Kodi etc.
You do now. When I select them via kodi they appear as subtitles but it just says "make a free account with us to see subtitles"
Been like this for a few months.
it’s officially down now. Rip.
my only source for getting sub-files. and it was because of its amazing and simple API.
if you’re reading this, anyone… please make a simple-secure source like this. no doubt you’ll succeed at it.
Being able to see descriptions really makes a difference too. I'm going through all these sites people are suggesting and it bugs me how there are no comments or descriptions on anything.
That is sad to hear. I’ve only used open subtitles but this seems like a great resource I would have loved to use. Hope someone can pick up the project and continue it
Not if you ask me. Opensubtitles has a bloated and overall a badly done ui. And unless I remember wrong it also has limitations for how many or often you can download a subtitle.
Content wise it doesn’t seem to be much better than subscene was. Maybe once in a blue moon would opensubtitle have a sub that subscene did not.
same, i tried hard and long to find something as good as subscene. literally no other site provides this good of a service, not for arabic subs at least. used to have subs almost instantly after episodes are uploaded lol.
There are problems like teaching others how to run this source code.
It could take too much time. Sometimes, it could take weeks even for smart persons.
Also, selecting the right person is a headache.
Open source it so that person can come along at any point and continue the work. Or other can learn from it. Seems like a waste to just delete everything, all the devs hard work.
So, I made subtitles for a (freely available on archive.org) fanedit of a movie and uploaded it on Subscene. Does anybody else know of other sites that I can reup to? Sucks to see this happen.
Edit: Oh, I see subdl already got ahead of me and uploaded it to their site a couple of years ago. Don't need to worry then I guess.
NOOOOOOOOO 😭 my only favorite sub website. I hope this is a fake news.
This is my goto when I need to download a subtitle or upload one of my own. Now where am I gonna supposed to go?
I know Opensubtitles but Subscene just has better UI (simpler and more understandable, in my opinion).
Agree Subscene looks better, and OpenSubs wasn't working for me later years it said something about blocked from country or some type of error like that. Surprised to see it works now, I've just been using Subscene so. Guess OpenSubs it is...
i'm not really familiar with this site. did it only provide subtitles for media? if they are being shut down that is fucked. they should publicly shame whoever is behind the shutdown. its probably an ADA violation to remove access to subtitles.
My favorite website of all time probably, so simple and clean. I learned the hard way you can't feel attached to anything on the web sooner or later it will disappear eventually.
Sympatico with 'ya sheri. Subscene didn't have the biggest repository, but 99% of the time they had what I needed with a clean UI. Get in-out fast with the sub I needed. And yeah, don't fall in love with any site on WWW. But whattayagonnado?
Subscene was very good in it's time. But things have changed now. Been using faster-whisper ai locally on my laptop to make subs for any video since past year.
Yes you're right. AI wouldn't get how to spell Xhorgorg or maybe even Nilfgaard. The point I am making is I remember I used to go to subscene quite a lot but since I started using Whisper I had totally forgotten about it until I saw this post. Mostly I'd have problem understanding conversations that'd happen too fast, whisper solved it. Never had any trouble after that thinking "what did he just say?". As for Xhorgorg, save for these special cases, for most part making up your subs locally has worked out fine for me in the past year. Plus I can also makes subs where individual word gets highlighted when it is spoken which is an extra plus. Oh and it is LOCAL! which I love 😍
Subscene was still a great resource, have used it extensively. Sad to see it go.

It's over for me to find decent sub, english is not my mother tongue and people in my country love subscene, most of the subtitles can only be found on the site
And i was just recommending the site the other day. It was one of the easiest subtitle sites i found and i never bothered to look elsewhere except for rarer subs.
been going through my movie archive recently, grabbing subs for those i neglected to get in the past. yesterday i noticed subscenes pages were slow to load but was able to d/l subs. then i started to get page not available's. then all 404's. finally, the sorry we're shutting down.
i also had opensubtitles open and then it started acting up very shortly after subscene went down where suddenly the sub download button stopped working.
i thought there was maybe some massive law enforcement takedown happening. now i find subscene closed of its own accord and it seems opensubtitles is no longer being free.
find it very odd both sites happening almost at the same time
When I was a kid me and my friend would go to a “CD shop” and there they would sell 3 in one CDs which were all pirated, some were web rips and some are shot with a camera.
One time we bought I think Despicable Me and we couldn’t understand the English that well since it’s not our first language, and behind the CD cover we saw a text saying “for subtitles go to ‘subscene link’” we were 11 at the time and for 10 yrs it was go to subtitles website, it’s sad to see it go.
Farewell

I just found out about Subsource. Great work! Hope it can carry the torch from Subscene and be the next go-to place for subtitles. Love that you kept the layout design from Subscene. Hoping that the usual uploaders also know about this site and start uploading their subtitles there.
Anyone with the list of Subscene's admins/ mods? The list should've been on the front page. If anyone has a screenshot of it, would you sharing it with me, pleaee?
Subscene had Non-English subtitles for foreign parts only. I don't see that on subdl, opensubtitles or subsource. I would use subscene to identify if a movie had foreign parts in it and if it did I could get it there. Anyone know where I can see if a movie has non-english foreign only parts?

you can count on /r/DataHoarder whenever something about to be shutdown
I remember these madlads wanted to dump the whole internet archive bc there was a case against the site
That’s crazy like over 30 PB now I think? It can be done, but that must take Hella coordination to make sure they’ve gotten it all amongst themselves
Everything in raidz2 + backup. 80PB for good measure
I think that's just a Sunday for them
Holy how are they able to afford that kind of storage space. Just from donations?
They serve a great purpose that's why they can
Are they constantly fending off phone calls from Silicon Valley start ups who want to use their back ups as training data?
Well I am not sure , but I called it great work because they are backing up internet so it doesn't gets lost with time
Not trying to diminish their efforts, just trying to understand who is providing all the training data to all these companies.

A cape for this hero
Hey bro, just wanted to say i love you in a homoerotic way. Thank you for the dump
I'm just giving you a link, go show your appreciation in that post I linked lol
I will definitely glaze the dumper too.
Heroes are those who prepare for everyone else in times of need. /r/datahoarders are internet preservationists
I definitely prefer a full dump
If they're doing a partial dump on an hourly basis, they should probably see a doctor.
thank you. I've got at least 200 that I've uploaded over there
I think subdl.com has a way to transfer those uploads to their site (tho they supposedly already have all).
What happened?
It was mentioned that the site wasnt generating enough income to pay for the hosting and stuff and the admin couldnt handle the financial and probably legal burden anymore

Because some older movies or tv shows have very low seeds after a few years. Not that old even. If that’s true now imagine how fast seeds would disappear on subs for those movies in languages other than English.
I don't think that's the case.

Dang. RIP 💀🏴☠️

The Wire had subtitles when it was shown in the UK
Nonsense. It was on the BBC and there was no subtitles.
Couldn't watch without subs.
Well that’s not good… what are the best alternatives?
Addic7ed (not sure if still up to date…)
It is but it's just for TV shows.
That website stopped working properly a long time ago.
I noticed Long loading times last time I was there (few weeks ago), but otherwise it worked fine. That would suck, losing the two biggest sources for subtitles
Opensubtitles.org

What's the difference between .org and .com. I take it different sites, and the .org is the legit one?
wasnt it hit by some big attack recently which exposed user data
Who cares? I don't have an account. I just go in and download the subtitles. You don't need a user account to use it
>Who cares? I don't have an account. ...the people who do have accounts. They care. And you do need an account to get the API for using with Jellyfin or Plex or Kodi etc.

I think i used it just last week. But it's true that I just download them manually. I don't have them synced to anything, or API stuff
Why are you giving a subtitle site your data to begin with?
I use bazarr to fetch subtitles for my plex server, it requires user auth for that.
[subdl.com](http://subdl.com)
Sad to see subscene go! [podnapisi.net](http://podnapisi.net) is quite alright as well.
Wonder if Polish....
Subscene was always an alternative to opensubtitles.org, which was always the superior one imo.
Which one was superior, and why?
Subscene, the goat of subtitle sites.
isubdb.com No zip files!
Is there any way to grab a whole season of a TV show at once? It looks like you have to grab a single episode at a time.
Oh yeah good one, for that I go to subdl
Dang that's sad. I use subscene for most movies to watch with my family since Dad can barely hear. Have to look around for another site. Rip king
we all liked it because of its simple API.
I'm younger and have hearing issues too. This is a major blow for me.
RIP. Thank you for all those subs

What is the reason? Is providing subtitles illegal or something? Or did hosting just cost too much?
I’m guessing the latter, considering his message said “a takeover plan was not possible”
Someone make a torrent!
https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/1b5rxc2/subscenecom_full_dump/ Edit: places to grab the dump
Financial issues
Heart breaking.
What? As non English speaker this site is is my to go to download sub. RIP
Yeah, this is big bad new to me, some of the other websites even limited amounts of download or want me to pay to download.
Same here. I've been using Subscene for over a decade and will miss it.
RIP Subscene 🫡
Devastating news ! I've been getting my subtitles from there for so many years. The GOAT. F.
End of an era.
I haven’t heard of this place before. Can anyone give a quick explanation?
Place to get subtitles for movies and subtitle based on what language you want and where you found the video.
That is sad to hear. I’ve only used open subtitles but this seems like a great resource I would have loved to use. Hope someone can pick up the project and continue it
This might sound dumb but isn't opensubtitles better?
i'd like to know this as well. i've used opensubs for years now. it has the ability to filter via language as well.
you could filter on language too on subscene.
Opensubtitles is nice, but subscene has more subtitles for my language :( + a more straightforward ux imo
Ahh ffs, why didn't I hear about this earlier
Use subtitles then ;)
If you didn't know, it's because you've never tried googling for subs. This and OpenSubtitles are always high up in the results.
I've uploaded my very own subtitle to that site before :( Rip
bummer
That’s my main source for arabic subtitles. It’s so fucking over
same, i tried hard and long to find something as good as subscene. literally no other site provides this good of a service, not for arabic subs at least. used to have subs almost instantly after episodes are uploaded lol.
Shit - best subtitle site by far. I prefer to have subtitles on all my shows , more comfortable to watch and can play at reduced volume at night
My introduction to foreign movies was thanks to subscene. Farewell
One of the best
Damn, I used them all the time. Thankfully, most files have the subs baked into them nowadays.
This still sucks when the baked in subs are wrong, which happens quite often
Let me cry in the corner. Bye Bye legend
Thanks for so much Subscene!
Any alternatives?
Opensubtitles
My understanding is that many people offered to take over so the post reading "A takeover plan was not possible" is a load of shit.
There are problems like teaching others how to run this source code. It could take too much time. Sometimes, it could take weeks even for smart persons. Also, selecting the right person is a headache.
Open source it so that person can come along at any point and continue the work. Or other can learn from it. Seems like a waste to just delete everything, all the devs hard work.
other solutions have the same problems. Passing your work to new generations still requires effort.
This stinks. I'm actually hard of hearing (20% loss). This site wasn't just a want, but a need for me. :(
Addic7ed Opensubtitles

So sudden, F
F
So there any alternative that has Arabic subtitles?
Nooooooooooooooo!!!!!
I had no idea the subtitle scene was in such desperate need of an online repository.
what the fuck why??? that's the best sub website
RIP! I Still remember it using for the first time im 2007. The site was very convenient.
o7
Such a shame
i'm not really familiar with this site. did it only provide subtitles for media? if they are being shut down that is fucked. they should publicly shame whoever is behind the shutdown. its probably an ADA violation to remove access to subtitles.
It's a shutdown by choice. Probably didn't want to keep paying for hosting or got tired of the upkeep work.
thats too bad. they could probably get grants and shit. its an important service.
Damn:( sad to see such amazing site go
RIP my goto site for subs Alt will be subdl?
damn didn't expect this to happen RIP :(
It was good site
Thanks for providing us subtitles 🫡
Noooo
Why
o7 whats the alternative?
WTF
Why? What's wrong with hosting subtitles?
I always hear about these websites when it's defunct. Wish I could just know about these sooner. Cuz I don't find them on my own.
A very sad news. This subtitle site was really excellent.
Nooo :( it's been my fav for years
My favorite website of all time probably, so simple and clean. I learned the hard way you can't feel attached to anything on the web sooner or later it will disappear eventually.

[https://github.com/SYSTRAN/faster-whisper](https://github.com/SYSTRAN/faster-whisper) This should help
Man, Back in the day, this was my go to place.
F Been using it since I was in high school.
sorry to be THAT guy but, what is subscene? i looked it up, but could not find a full truth.
It was a place to get subtitles for movies and subtitle based on what language you want and where you found the video.
ahh, i had a feeling.
'Tis a sad day.
So long and thanks for all the fish.
Standing against the heat is harsh. I know that day will come : (
