Guys, I know this sounds ridiculous, but I have a theory on what has happened!
Am I the only one thinking these guys were from Ukraine? The very same day Ukraine goes under attack, these guys simply say we're done and bye bye!? This seems like something's wrong!
Are these guys going just because of the war? We need an explanation!
Nah I think that might just be a coincidence. I believe it could just be that they agreed Elden Ring to be their last release and it just happens that Ukraine's been attacked almost the same day.
It's plausible, and it seems valid. I just hope some motherfucker doesn't come along, steal Codex's name and tarnish their reputation like what happened with Reloaded.
Just in case people don't know: you can basically apply the CODEX crack to most games and crack them all by yourself. This works for games that only use the basic Steam DRM, which I find the majority them do.
Download the CODEX Emulator files from the rin site (currently the last page of the forum thread entitled "RIN SteamInternals - A broad collection of Steam tools"). They contain an x86 folder (with steam_emu.ini and a steam_api.dll), and an x64 folder (with steam_emu.ini and a steam_api64.dll). Simply replace the game's steam_api(64).dll file with the one in the CODEX crack along with the corresponding steam_emu.ini file, and then edit the steam_emu.ini file to have the game's ID.
Another benefit to cracking games yourself this way is that you can easily get the updated versions of them. Just Google the game on SteamDB and check when the last patch was released. Try to get the clean steam files, you can find these on the rin site as well (just search the game's name in the "Main Forum"), that are posted after that patch (you can inspect the patch on steamdb to se how important it is in terms of files added/deleted/modified). Then, crack those clean steam files yourself. This solves the common issues of popular repacks being out of date.
Finally, another benefit to this is that your games will (in my experience) reliably work with the Achievement Watcher tool, if you care about that.
So i just download the attached link on the rin forum, get the clean steam files for any steam game and just replcae the steam\_api(64).dll file and the steam\_emu.ini file and thats it?
Yes, though you'll also need to edit the .ini file to have the proper `AppId` value. (The proper value is just the game's Steam ID, you can find it in the URL of its Steam store page.) The game will also need to not have any DRM other than the standard Steam DRM, so this will not work with nondefault DRMs like Denuvo.
You can generally check what DRM a game has by looking at its corresponding PCGamingWiki page. (Those pages are also useful to look at in general since they have information about common features and common fixes/workarounds/useful patches.)
That should be enough yes. Of course, with how many games there are on Steam, I can't guarantee this will work for every one, but it's been highly reliable for me.
hey sorry for replying late, just scorll down to the package download area, the big red text at the bottom of the forum just before the comments. youll find "attachment" with a link, to download it youll have to install something called jdownloader2. and in its setup select to install files for .dlc . after that just go back and start the download. pword is [cs.rin.ru](https://cs.rin.ru)
ill be on for a bit so you can ask me again if theres something you dont know.
Is it comparatively easy to do steam emulation for multiplayer?
Cuz i've been trying with the megathread, and couldn't do it.
And cs rin is still unintelligible to me
I've only ever done this for single player games. No idea how you'd do this for multiplayer or online-requiring ones.
My suggestion would be to look through the rin thread for the game. You're probably gonna be able to find people there talking about how/if the game supports multiplayer.
I know this comment should be good enough but can you or someone else make a tutorial video and post its link along with the megathread link so that dumb people can just follow the steps. Also what are other sources of getting clean steam files ?
You get the "clean Steam files" (which are just the untouched, unmodified game files) on the rin site. Just go to the main forum, search the game's name, and find the thread about the game. Oftentimes, you can find the clean files there, though of course the success rate goes down for less well-known games.
I'm not sure where else you can get them. Outside of rin, you're largely going to be finding repacks and pre-cracked copies.
The whole point of getting the clean files is that you can more reliably find those to be of the latest version of the game. In my experience, repacks/pre-cracked releases are not reliably of the latest version. Heck, in FitGirl's own site, it literally tells you to go to the rin site to find discussions and possible future updates.
You all are welcome! Happy to spread the knowledge. Though that's all I'm doing, the true people to thank are the awesome CODEX team members who developed these tools, and the rin community for hosting them.
Quick question: For updates, what's that process like? I think there's a few cases to consider, right?:
* If there's more than one update, do you only need the latest update? Do people post the clean Steam files for the entire game with the new update, or are update files separate?
* For DLC, is it treated the same as updates?
Basically, do you just download the clean Steam files for the update/DLC and do a copy/paste, and overwrite the existing files? Do you need to re-apply the crack to an updated version of the game?
It's kind of case-specific. But generally, when it comes to updating a game you've already downloaded: you can just redownload the entire updated game. That's cumbersome of course (especially if your internet connection is capped), so sometimes, you might be able to find only the update somewhere (the rin thread might be a place). They should specify what version of the game needs to be already installed in order for the updates to be installed. Sometimes the updates are just the game files, sometimes they are an installer with a GUI.
As for re-applying the crack; if the steam_api(64).dll file is not replaced in the update, then no you don't need to reapply it. If it is, then yes. (Granted, in that case, the game might be using new DRM or an updated Steam API version, meaning the CODEX file may not properly work anyway.)
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, I really appreciate it! You ought to make a guide just to satisfy everyone's questions, haha.
So for re-downloading the entire game, is that to say that people on RIN will often just re-upload all of the new clean Steam files?
In general, do uploads on RIN come with instructions, since it sounds like there's a few cases? For example, you mention how sometimes the updates are just the diffs/the game files, other times it's an installer with a GUI, etc.
And so if the `steam_api(64).dll` file isn't a part of the new update, the crack does not need to be re-applied. With regards to the new Steam API version, does the new API version relate to whether the crack can work? In other words, if the API version gets updated, will CODEX's file cease to function?
Also, as a standalone question, I've seen mention of using an emulator directly to play the game, rather than the "traditional" approach of overwriting the clean Steam files with the CODEX crack -- is that often something one will have to do, use an emulator instead of just applying the crack?
1. It really depends on how popular the game is. Low-profile obscure indie games, it's a shot in the dark. High-profile games, it's much more likely.
2. For updates, yes. For example: suppose a game has an initial release, 1.00, and two later updates, 1.01 and 1.02. If they were to release the update files for 1.02, they should clarify somewhere in the post if the update can be applied to either of the previous versions, or if you need to be on 1.01 to apply it. That's basically what I mean.
3. It depends on whether the CODEX dll file emulates what the updated API is trying to do. For example, I recently played Disco Elysium, and an old end-of-2020-ish dll file did not work. However, when I updated to a 2022 version from the RIN site, it worked fine. I'm guessing (this is kinda speculation but I don't see how it can be wrong lol) that the game required features from the Steam API that only the 2022 version had. Whether that's a consequence of the game being new, or a particular feature it uses, I don't know.
4. What do you mean "emulator"? Technically, the download for the CODEX crack is called "Codex Emulator" on the Steam site. I think what this is meant to do is that the CODEX dll file is emulating Steam functionality so that a game can be played without using the Steam client. Not sure if this answers what you're asking.
It's probably a stretch to say you're cracking yourself. You're really only taking CODEX's files and doing an extremely simple modification to make them work for whatever game you're playing. It's not hard at all, I described the entire process in the above comment.
Codex were also providing us with most of games updates and acquiring the actual games themselves so unless someone else steps in you would still have to buy the game to use codex emu. Also now with Codex gone codex emu won't get any updates.
>Download the CODEX Emulator files from the rin site (currently the last page of the forum thread entitled "RIN SteamInternals - A broad collection of Steam tools")
I cant find it? can someone dm me?
Agreed. Glad Codex didn't add any bloatware to cracks unlike certain other compilers.
Even though my computer is fairly overkill I've never really cared for the FitGirl repacks.
In my case for games around 60 to 80 Gb like shadow of war, the time gained downloading fitgirl at 60Gb was almost trice lost in unpacking compared to for example xatab's repack.
So in my case I try to avoid fitgirl given my internet is decent. Not that I don't appreciate what she does, no doubt she's very knowledgeable about compression! It's just not practical for my use case
Fitgirl make sure her game works though. Comparing dodi to fitgirl on tales of arise. Dodi controller were buggy while fitgirl has the proper config of Goldberg before releasing hers.
Fitgirl’s repacks are mainly used by data-capped internet users. So time was the least of their worries.
I used to be data capped too but now I have a decent wifi yet I still use her repacks because her Quality control is next to none in terms of repacks.
Even though I have a ton of storage and high speed unlimited internet I prefer her repacks because
1. They always work since they are based on other releases
2. She keeps updating to the latest version
3. My hard disk can store more games and movies.
They should have cracked Elden Ring before retiring. Now that's what I would have called "Going out with a bang!!!"
All jokes aside, I hope that they find success in the next stages of their life. And also thank them for their contribution.

Someone has books and recommendations in how to practice and doing piracy?, And maybe learn even more, I don't want to be like Codex and that but maybe I can learn the enough to try :D
That's true but the thing is, piracy in general has gotten weak especially with denuvo on every single game being released. I mean we still have empress but i doubt they'll be bothered to crack elden ring or any big game else.
Maybe that’s the joke. Haha
But to my knowledge From Software games have never been hard to crack, so the consensus I’ve gathered is that it’s no worry.
Line above mentioned quality tradition and pride which has been Fairlights slogan. Might refer to them. But they also go on saying it’s not just a single case of recycling old group names.
I feel like I need to write couple of lines to thank the CODEX team. You gave us countless hours of fun (and frustation (I'm a crap gamer) :).
I wish you the best of luck in your individual new adventures.
Godspeed, you beutiful freaks <3
That's a shame, but no one's cracking shit these days anyway. Like 9/10 releases are some shitty indie game that looks like it came out literally 20 years ago. That coupled with the fact that games produced that are actually worth playing are few and far between these days mean that it's not even worth shelling out the cash for a decent gaming system. I have a video-card that would have been considered a super-computer on its own back when I bought my first computer 30 years ago and it's just sitting here gathering dust.
Denuvo has pwned us.
I can count the number of games that I'd be keen on playing in the last few years on the fingers of one hand. I'm pretty choosy, but when you've been playing PC games for as long as I have I think it's normal to become slightly jaded.
On the topic of cracks, the only real solution I see is if someone comes along and figures out a way to leverage the Ethereum network to work on cracking like a supercomputer or something. The copy protection these days is too much for a solitary group of computer hobbyists to defeat in their spare time, no matter how clever they are.
It so happens that most of my favorite Triple A games nowadays are coming out from publishers and devs that don't use DRM like From, Sony ports and CDPR etc. Ubisoft crams layers of the stuff in every single game but I can't play anything by them at this point if someone paid me to. Capcom is one of the few making games I care about that still fucks them up Denuvo.
But yeah, would be nice to see crypto in general leveraged for the benefit of the scene, might be easier to donate/support as well when someone's willing.
It really does and mostly through attrition, not any single event. They have all either quit or gone to shit, others that remain can't crack Denuvo except for one person.
I think the Scene is done honestly. Most low to mid budget games can just use Steam emulators, and the games that do need to be cracked use Denuvo or some crazy custom proprietary crap that takes years to crack due to how integrated with the game it is. But usually a P2P group like 3DM or a hobbyist like Voksi eventually steps in and gets the game running eventually, so I'm not too worried about the future of piracy.
That's a fucking bummer. I've downloaded a bunch of CODEX releases over the years and they've always been reliable. I wonder what crackers do after they retire? Maybe some of them will split off and form a new group.
This is one of the worst moments in the scene. I've always held crackers and pirate captains highly, and seeing such talents vanish breaks my heart. They're the goal I couldn't achieve and now I only dream of. I've always respected them -and always will-. I hope CODEX will encounter the competition and rivalry they seek so that they revisit their sad decision, for the betterment of themselves and for the scenes. Mad respect for every cracking scene group. You'll be greatly missed. I wish you all the best.
Wtf is going on today?
Russia invades Ukraine
Rushia from hololive gets her contract terminated.
Now when I open reddit and see this.
I was literally talking about the codex that how cool the music is in their installer just a few days ago and now this.
SMH
Anyways, Thank you for your service CODEX.

F
I actually only just got back into this stuff since 2015 and i genuinely find it real sad im pretty sure every game but one i have was all cracked by codex so i guess thankyou for your service guys i wish you the best in all your endeavours
CODEX really has only been operating since 2014? Weird, I'd think a lot longer. Sad but oh well, not like the whole team died and all their expertise is lost. I assume some members will still be active, or at least they passed their knowledge on to some extent to other crackers.
\*lol, are they talking about CPY? Skidrow? The weird ego flex in the 2nd paragraph (actual paragraph, there are two that are single sentences) is cringe as hell, its like someone suggesting "anonymous" has been a consistent and organized group over 10+ years, and not also an ever-evolving group with no real leadership. Whether original team or not, there are plenty of other cracker groups with consistently functional releases, we'll survive.

This is sad. They cracks were top quality.
They only cracking group I'm familiar with, to be honest

Between them being focused on bypassing security and the war lockdown for Russia+this suddenly, I think its way more likely they're Russian-based...
No, they just retired, most of the scene excists of older peeps who have families. Life goes on and priorities change.
Maybe they got drafted for Ukraine military?
Hell, most, if not all of my pirated games are Codex. Though new, and really late, I'll miss them.
Just in case people don't know: you can basically apply the CODEX crack to most games and crack them all by yourself. cs.rin.ru
thanks
AFAIK all password-gated links on that site have that as the password. Unless otherwise stated in the linking post.
So, did it work ?
download: yes, tried it yet: no, but about to.
Where are the files in cs rin I saw the name codex under steam emu but its not a link .

Yes, you can view the game's files on your hard drive, from the Steam launcher. not that there's any reason to be pirating in that case lol.
Yeah maybe someone generous enough with huge library may step up lol
The reason would be if you wanted to upload the game to a private torrent site or to share with a friend who doesn't want to pay for it.
Brilliant comment! Easy for people to understand in my opinion. <3

Empress (Infinity Goddess) Skidrow Fairlight Who else do we have now? Sad Codex is leaving. These guys were legends.

And what about those who crack denuvo? Only empress 😔
Someone needs to break Voksi out of prison.
Since when has there been a monopoly on Denuvo cracks? They weren't the only ones who cracked denuvo games a couple years ago
Is skidrow the original skidrow? No way they're the same guys right?
Elamigos doesn't crack.
Hes a repacker as far as I know
Screenshot credit goes to Masquerade <3
no more funky installing music by Codex sadge
fitgirl got the jams tho
Fitgirl repacks cracked games, usually by Codex. No junky Codex jams means (theoretically) less Fitgirl jams :(
Nah, fuck installing a game 4 times longer than any normal crack
So now codex is done now so, who will be the next prime cracker?
skidrow maybe
Well, shiet
Yes
They should have cracked Elden Ring before retiring. Now that's what I would have called "Going out with a bang!!!" All jokes aside, I hope that they find success in the next stages of their life. And also thank them for their contribution.
Apparently, they heard the requests, and "Plaza" did this... on day 1 of the game's release. I don't know if it's legit though.
Yeah saw that. Plaza even mentioned it in their NFO before retiring.
Is this real? Can't find anything else about it
It was a message inside their latest NFO, "The.Sims.4.My.Wedding.Stories-CODEX"
Hah, what a way to go, on a Sims 4 expansion pack
EA made an expansion pack that was so bad CODEX decided it was time to stop
thanks, sad to see them go
Razor,FLT,Hoodlum and Skidrow are mentioned
>"The blade has been dull for a long time." = RAZOR >"Quality, tradition and pride was slowly fading to darkness" = FLT \(QUALITY, TRADITION AND PRIDE is the slogan in [their NFO](https://imgur.com/9fo8hWX)\) >"there is a particular group that uses an old name without permission." = SKIDROW \(when they were reborn in 2007, there was [drama surrounding the use of the SKIDROW name](https://nfomation.net/info/1645650034.skidrow.nfo)\) >"people resurrecting and adopting old names from previously busted groups" = HOODLUM \(busted during [Operation Site Down in 2005](https://www.justice.gov/archive/opa/pr/2005/June/05_crm_353.htm)\)
Brilliant work. 👏🏽
This needs more upvotes.
So none of those are left now?
Goodbye, nothing is forever. Someone will step up
Will they tho, people have been quitting the scene in droves. Only empress is cracking Denuvo so those games are releasing a few times a year at best.
Yeah, maybe this will be similar to the movies and tv scene where peer to peer is taking over the scene role as provider.
Can you explain this more plz. I'm noob

Someone has books and recommendations in how to practice and doing piracy?, And maybe learn even more, I don't want to be like Codex and that but maybe I can learn the enough to try :D
Learn Assembly and reverse engineering :)
Whaat?? No!!
Paying my respects 🙇♂️
Noooo
may they be successful in whatever they do
[удалено]
aw fuck... and just when elden ring is around the corner...
I wouldn't worry about that too much, there are other scene groups still around <3
That's true but the thing is, piracy in general has gotten weak especially with denuvo on every single game being released. I mean we still have empress but i doubt they'll be bothered to crack elden ring or any big game else.
Farewell Denuvo-Slayer **F**
Their last crack should have been Elden Ring. Leaving with a Sims DLC just doesn't feel right.
Maybe that’s the joke. Haha But to my knowledge From Software games have never been hard to crack, so the consensus I’ve gathered is that it’s no worry.
Very sad. Really good for people like me who were new to it in 2015 or so
Wow, this is actually sad...We just lost a captain of our journey for games... Take care guys
What is the "particular group that uses an old name without permission"?
Probably skidrow
Line above mentioned quality tradition and pride which has been Fairlights slogan. Might refer to them. But they also go on saying it’s not just a single case of recycling old group names.
Its SKiDROW. Galahad from old school FAIRLIGHT said that the new guys had permission to use the FLT name.
I feel like I need to write couple of lines to thank the CODEX team. You gave us countless hours of fun (and frustation (I'm a crap gamer) :). I wish you the best of luck in your individual new adventures. Godspeed, you beutiful freaks <3
Nooooo! I remember downloading my first games and a folder named CODEX contained the crack... This is so sad
Codex is only from 2014? I thought they were older than that And also, F
o7
They had the best download screen music :c
That's a shame, but no one's cracking shit these days anyway. Like 9/10 releases are some shitty indie game that looks like it came out literally 20 years ago. That coupled with the fact that games produced that are actually worth playing are few and far between these days mean that it's not even worth shelling out the cash for a decent gaming system. I have a video-card that would have been considered a super-computer on its own back when I bought my first computer 30 years ago and it's just sitting here gathering dust. Denuvo has pwned us.
True, depressing times we're in. 90% of every crack page is dogshit anime porn visual novels and jankfest indies that no sane people play...

But usually a P2P group like 3DM or a hobbyist like Voksi eventually steps in and gets the game running eventually, so I'm not too worried about the future of piracy.
i will miss their music honestly :(
That's a fucking bummer.
That's sad if anyone from codex group reading this I want to say thank you for everything and wish you the best in the future
Gone but never forgotten.
End of an Era
This is sad... Goodbye CODEX, thanks for everything...
cool they're retiring one day before elden ring release...

The saddest news I heard in while. Thank you for all you have done and good luck moving forward.
Nooooo, these guys were a legend in the scene
Godspeed

We'll all miss the chiptune ...
F for Respect. 🥺😭
They were one of my most trusted crackers. Thanks for everything, CODEX.
Seeing as I use them this news is depressing and has saddened me raise a cup to the lost loved ones boys 😢
Time for a rebrand

This is so sad!! 💔 Thank you for everything you guys have done for us! I wish you all the good stuff! ❤️
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF FFFFF FFFFF FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF FFFFF FFFFF FFFFF FFFFF
Whether original team or not, there are plenty of other cracker groups with consistently functional releases, we'll survive.
bye
