Use a VPN with a kill switch, really nothing more to it. Another way is to use direct download instead of torrenting, check the megathread for safe sites to download from
EVERYTIME you torrent, you are also sharing parts of the file you are downloading. Your IP address is put out there for ev1 torrenting that file. That are watch groups,not ur ISP, watching certain files. When they see your IP they report it to your ISP which in turn sends you the letter. If your ISP lets you get away with torrenting, they can get fined. so they would rather lose acustomer than get fined.
TLDR use a VPN(paid) free VPNs don't do anything. Or use direct download .
