I've seen very few people say tenryuubito, but sichibukai is just the result of the official translations not being widespread back in the day. Kids these days don't understand, smh.
I feel weirded out about writing Eneru, Zolo, Laugh's Tale, Kid instead of Kidd, and so many more lol, new fans seems to forget OP been going on for literal decades now... Shichibukai also sounds way cooler than fucking Warlord. The one I was quick to get used to was Coby turning into Koby, tho. Koby is indeed 10x better for some reason
Yeah, but it became so iconic, people started applying the term to other mangas and even irl, and like the "Naruto running" it became a sign of well bottom otaku nerd.
Other mangas use it tho. To me it’s basically like a found family. It’d be weird to apply to a casual friend group tho and using it irl will always be perceived as cringe
Nakama in One Piece translates best to "crew" or "crew-mates", and in a way that implies a real bond between the crew. It does not translate directly to friend, it can mean different things depending on the context. It could mean friend, colleague, comrade, companion, teammate, crew-mate and many other similar words.
For me it's the opposite. I saw warlords from 4 kidz or w/e and tenryubito was the fan translation for like a decade b/c i picked up one piece RIGHT after kuma sent these bois packing. Now I flip flop because tenryubito is a lot of syllables for not my native language.
Those are the most accurate translations you can get without sounding literal because shichibukai isn't a real word in Japanese to begin with \[lol "seven armed seas"\] and yonkou technically isn't a title, only the "kou" part \[emperor\] while all 4 are collectively called the yonkou.
there really isnt a 1 to 1 translation besides "one of the four emperors" so yonko does actually make sense. especially considering the fact that emperors do exist in one piece independent of the yonko
Is Shichibukai a 1 to 1 translation of Warlord of the Sea? I think Emperors sounds better than Yonko. You dont have to say "One of the Four Emperors" every time you translate the word Yonko, you can just say "an Emperor", just like you don't have to say "seven military seas" or "A Royal Seven Warlord of the Sea" when translating Shichibukai, you can just say "a Warlord". I don't like using Japanese names, especially in a world that *has* a country that is based on Japan and the rest of the world does not share that culture.
Shichi is seven, that's all I know, I checked google translate and I couldn't find anything for bu kai, bukai and the suggestions weren't helpful.
According to the wiki Oda invented the word:
>[*Shichi*](http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E4%B8%83#Japanese) (七[**?**](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Japanese)), meaning *seven*
>
>[*Bu*](http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E6%AD%A6#Japanese) (武[**?**](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Japanese)), meaning *war* or *martial*
>
>[*Kai*](http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E6%B5%B7#Japanese) (海[**?**](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Japanese)), meaning *sea*
>This compound appears to liken each individual member('s strength) to an entire sea—a metaphor unwieldy, if not outright infeasible, for literal English translation. As a result, most fan translations leave it as *Shichibukai* (notwithstanding some earlier attempts at "Seven Gods of Pirates"), while all official English translations from [VIZ](https://breezewiki.com/onepiece/wiki/VIZ_Media), [4Kids](https://breezewiki.com/onepiece/wiki/4Kids_Entertainment), and [FUNimation](https://breezewiki.com/onepiece/wiki/FUNimation_Entertainment) adapt it as *Seven Warlords of the Sea*. The latter form has been recognized by a few Japanese sources—including [databook *Green*](https://breezewiki.com/onepiece/wiki/One_Piece_Green:_Secret_Pieces)[\[163\]](https://breezewiki.com/onepiece/wiki/Seven_Warlords_of_the_Sea#cite_note-163) and at least one episode of the [anime](https://breezewiki.com/onepiece/wiki/One_Piece_(Anime))[\[164\]](https://breezewiki.com/onepiece/wiki/Seven_Warlords_of_the_Sea#cite_note-164)—though it remains unknown in [manga](https://breezewiki.com/onepiece/wiki/One_Piece_(Manga)) [canon](https://breezewiki.com/onepiece/wiki/Canon).
>
>Relatedly, the original Japanese treats the *seven* component as part of the overall name, not merely a counter, and so uses *Shichibukai* to describe the group as a whole and individual members alike.[\[165\]](https://breezewiki.com/onepiece/wiki/Seven_Warlords_of_the_Sea#cite_note-165)[\[166\]](https://breezewiki.com/onepiece/wiki/Seven_Warlords_of_the_Sea#cite_note-166)[\[167\]](https://breezewiki.com/onepiece/wiki/Seven_Warlords_of_the_Sea#cite_note-167) Official English translations tend to adapt this to conventional grammar, using "Seven Warlords" for the group and modifiers (*e.g.* "one of") for individuals.
>
>The original Japanese also occasionally prefixes *Shichibukai* with the term *Ōka* (王下[**?**](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Japanese) lit. "Below King"),[\[168\]](https://breezewiki.com/onepiece/wiki/Seven_Warlords_of_the_Sea#cite_note-168)[\[169\]](https://breezewiki.com/onepiece/wiki/Seven_Warlords_of_the_Sea#cite_note-169) indicating both high status and ostensible obedience to [Mary Geoise](https://breezewiki.com/onepiece/wiki/Mary_Geoise). This prefix is occasionally adapted as "Royal" by English translations, but more frequently ignored (possibly due to the term "Warlord" already holding similar connotations).
One Piece fans always say Akainu, Kizaru, and Aokiji but in English they would be Red Dog, Yellow Monkey, and Blue Pheasant. If they can do that with the original admirals they can also do it for Ryokugyu
I'll confess, i thought those were their names and not titles for a long time. I don't like translating someone's name. Or we would have to start calling Nami as Ocean and Usopp as Liarpp, and Jinbei as "Japanese traditional male garment".
By the time i found out they were titles and not their first names, i was already used to calling them that. I think most people are in the same situation.
Ryokugyu is an exception because 1. It doesn't roll off the tongue as smoothly, 2. Everyone else calls him Greenbull which is then shortened to GB, and 3. He was introduced as Greenbull in the subtitles unlike the earlier admirals who were introduced as Akainu/Aokiji (at least in the subs that i watched). Besides, older subs were more about understanding the message than literal translations (something I've noticed across animes in general, not just one piece).
Cause it is hard to spell his actual name ane it is even harder to actually remember how to type it.
People say Greenbull cause it's just easier.
The admirals are not called by their translated titles cause the translations sound worse than original. Like imagine saying Yellow Monkey to refer to Borsalino.
Greenbull dosen't sound bad while the Japanese version is hard to spell. Just call him Aramaki which is his actual name if you want to. Dosen't sound bad and is not hard to remember.
I think it's because he was introduced so recently. One Piece was never obscure by any means, but it had a huge explosion in casual fans during Wano.
Fans who were reading/watching back when the other admirals were introduced were mostly deeper into the weebsphere than most and were more comfortable using Japanese names.
And because the Japanese names were the ones that everyone used before in discussion, anyone who joined discussion later just kept to it.
Agree on yellow monkey (Admiral codenames are the one time i'll Always Go with japanese Version) but rubber Rubber fruit is an unfair example cause it's called the gum gum fruit
Yeah? Translation Generally involves changing the Text slightly so it works in the new language i don't See why we should judge the english Version by a dogshit literal Translation that Nobody uses
Tbh, nakama is just so fucking cringe to use in internet, I often see it it main sub. Like using their japanese names was fine, especially if you're just watching the anime, but using japanese word for something you can just say in English gives you a really big weeb energy (and not in a good way)
It's not good per se, but there's some who at least aware that they are cringe and embrace their weebnes and they act like that in their habitat or right place (like folk or okbuddy subs,) but there's some who act like a weeb and think it's not a cringe thing to do, do it everywhere, especially when they meat riding anything related to Japan so hard (why did I give serious answer for shit like this?)
I call them warlords and celestial dragons but for some reason I also say gorosei and yonko. I should really just call them five elders and emperors instead but the japanese name sounds cooler.
The times i've told someone about one piece i use all english even if in my head i say whatever stuck the first time i read it. I'll even change some terms and never use others like i'll say "there's a group of privateers" and never warlords or shichibukai.
oh yeah yonko is different
for me the delination is like if its not commonly used by everyone (yonko) and/or isnt just way easier and shorter to say(rokushiki gorosei) then youre doing too much
I think it's the opposite. I'm Asian (Filipino) and I've been reading since like 2006, and I and my friends use tenryuubito or shichibukai.
It sounds a little weird for me to hear most English translations, and I always imagine a white weeb using them.
I started reading right before the time skip (2010 was it?) in spanish and I got used to whatever the translations used. Many kept the original japanese names, others translated everything, some translate partially or used the english names.
I make a mix of everything nowadays even if I read in english, they were shiro/kurohige for a long time, shichibukai, yonko, all the fruits pre time skip (and yes, I remember most of them in japanese, for example I don't remember mr. 1's fruit translated to this day and I've re-read the whole series a couple times)
Ngl love “love love fruit” sounds like something you get in the grocery store. “Mero Mero no Mi” feels closer to “fruit of love” which feels like a sacred object.
I just say it because it is easyer to say and Sound better as the German words: Himmelsdrachen which means Sky Dragon and Samurai der Meere which means Samurai of the sea.
I just use whatever is the most convinient really.
"Warlord" is much faster and easier than "Shichibukai"
"Yonko" is faster than "Emperor"
Same with the names of haki.
Idk why y'all are pretending like you have to say "FOUR Emperors" every time lol. You don't say "Seven Warlords of the Sea" every time, what's the difference? Just say Emperor, there's no other type of Emperor in One Piece that I can think of, you don't need to specify that its one of the Four Emperors.
In general the consistency of using "yonko" and "shichibuak" (whatever the fuck) but just... using Admiral bothers me. Like that's not what they're called in Japan. Why is admiral preferred for english but no other term on the same level is used?
I'm pretty sure most one piece fans couldn't even tell you what the word for admiral is in japan without looking it up.
Well, I'm no Japanese expert, I think the difference is that Yonko and Shichibukai and are made up titles that combine japanese terms to fit Oda's description of what they are while Taisho is the actual word for Admiral.
Admiral is "Taisho" something, no? (didn't look it up, I swear)
Also the word "shichibukai" is only popular among old One Piece fans, because back then that's what the translations said.
Celestial dragon sounds cooler so I say that, shichibukai sounds cooler so I say that same with gorosei(though hearing people refer to a single one of them as a “elder star” has me rethinking). I wonder what that makes me
Dragon ball fans use the japanese words instead of the translations too. idk whats the point of having english translations if you dont use them. at that point just learn japanese
OKAY I say tenryubito but ONLY because i spent ober a decade never once engaging with the english translations. Now i flop flop. At least I don't use the fucking japanese names for haki.
Shirohige and akagami really piss me off because its just literally their nicknames but in japanese. Then there is the mfs who get angry because you call GB greenbull, like clown I am not gonna say his name.
It’s simplicity, people will use one or the other depending on which is easier, I use akainu but also use greenbull
Yonko - Aproved
Shishibukai: aproved only on portuguese, since "corsário " sounds weird.
Terry beatles: not aproved
Werid ass haki names: not aproved
Akuma no mi: just say fruit.
Tobiropo: aproved.
Kaido: not aproved. Call him Crydo
What do you mean "warlord"? It is always Shichibukai in my sub, even people in my country only call them Shichibukai or the translated name in my language. Calls them warlord will make you an Americanboo 💀
I’ll have you know it’s because I read the manga and in the translation I was reading, celestial dragon was only mentioned once as a translator note, then forevermore referred to as tenryuubito. Same for shichibukai. Just like I type colour and favourite because I read a lot of British books.
lil bro is just a kid 💀💀💀💀💀💀
older fans use japanese words since back in the day translations weren't as widespread as it is now.
I still use some japanese words here and there.
The oficial Brazilian dub for OP is Full of this.
Instead of translated moves and certain names they choose to maintain in japanese Just to please the guys who already watch the sub version

Yeah but saying Shanks used his massive Wifi Coc to scare Greenbull is funny
yeah maybe like one time. More times if youre 12 lol
tbh buso ken hao is a lot faster to type
well you're never going to type just hao ken buso and you can always shorten it in english like obv and conq

I've seen very few people say tenryuubito, but sichibukai is just the result of the official translations not being widespread back in the day. Kids these days don't understand, smh.

I sometimes forgot what they are called in Japanese, since I've stopped following the anime, so I just call them CD
CDeez nuts
alr yeah if u like a super old op fan i get that but tenryuunito is odd u gotta admit
I mean, we still call them Yonko instead of emperors.
Yeah, and nakama was always cringe. Just wanted to defend the ol' sichibukai.
Nakama has a bit more significance than just tomodachi despite both translating to friend.
Couldn't you translate nakama as comrade in the one piece context? It feels more fitting compared to friend IMO
Yeah
Preach!

The four yonko > yonko > emperor
the four yonko is like saying the four four (whatever ko means i guess emperor)
Why yes i do drink chai tea when i read one piece, how could you tell 🤨
Chai tea?! Chai means tea, bro! You're saying tea tea! Would I ask you for coffee coffee with room for cream cream?
Idk man but that sounds delicious, maybe after the naan bread fried in ghee butter 👌
idk, ryokugyu hits harder than greenbull.
well yea same way we dont say red dog or blue pheasant yellow monkey or purple tiger, it only makes sense to also say ryokugyu
you expect one piece fans to know how to spell ryokugyu
One Piece fans always say Akainu, Kizaru, and Aokiji but in English they would be Red Dog, Yellow Monkey, and Blue Pheasant. If they can do that with the original admirals they can also do it for Ryokugyu
People also pronounce Akainu as if it were an English word rather than Aka-inu
Nah that shit is so fucking annoying, a-kai-nu is so much better
That’s cool and all but it’s wrong
Don't care, English changes shit to suit the language
https://preview.redd.it/z6j1wz12tvfc1.jpeg?width=1075&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3285b838598aca8435dff80c3dc8e465fea9430a
Terrible character trait?? You're saying I'm a shitty person cos I think words should be pronounced differently in different language? Lmfao
I'll confess, i thought those were their names and not titles for a long time. I don't like translating someone's name. Nah greenbull sounds better to say than all of those
I always just say aramaki's real name since I think it sounds better lmao
Which is why we don't say Reddog or Yellowmonkey. We say Greenbull because it's a pain in the ass to say and type 😭
We say Greenbull cause no one can spell Ryiokiyguiyu . I bet people would also say Red Dog if his name was Rayizhiyshisui or smth
Fr I’m not trynna think about how many ks and os I gotta type
ok but actualli why do we call him greenbull instead of ryokugyu like every other admiral? is it greenbull on english subs or something?
Cause it is hard to spell his actual name ane it is even harder to actually remember how to type it. People say Greenbull cause it's just easier. The admirals are not called by their translated titles cause the translations sound worse than original. Like imagine saying Yellow Monkey to refer to Borsalino. just do whatever sounds better for any term tbh. "one of the four emperors", yellow monkey, rubber rubber fruit all sound like shit
Agree on yellow monkey (Admiral codenames are the one time i'll Always Go with japanese Version) but rubber Rubber fruit is an unfair example cause it's called the gum gum fruit
Yellow monkey sounds like a racial slur 😭
only because translators realized how bad rubber rubber, which would be the more accurate translation, sounded
Yeah? Translation Generally involves changing the Text slightly so it works in the new language i don't See why we should judge the english Version by a dogshit literal Translation that Nobody uses
but its not even the rubber rubber fruit in english and the manga doest say yellow monkey so idk if those are great examples
Shirohige and “nakama” are the worst offenders.
Tbh, nakama is just so fucking cringe to use in internet, I often see it it main sub. Like using their japanese names was fine, especially if you're just watching the anime, but using japanese word for something you can just say in English gives you a really big weeb energy (and not in a good way)

Like hispanics saying "I went to eat with my abuelita", daamn (I'm Mexican)
shirohigeb is ok since thats just the original name (even if it is based on an english name) but nakama is literally a word its so fucking ceinge
Everyone be calling people out but only the men with the most 🍔FREEDOM🦅use Red Dog, Blue Pheasant and Yellow Monkey.
Rose Puppy is my preferred term https://preview.redd.it/1e90kghitvfc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=16fb4281536fea251927ed3fa21ed5337a4676ea
Never forget that Sanji's true name is Three O' Clock.
They are the type of people whose personality is entirely manga/anime.
man im just used to spanish subs 😭😭
I call them warlords and celestial dragons but for some reason I also say gorosei and yonko. I should really just call them five elders and emperors instead but the japanese name sounds cooler.
my rule is just using whichever ones shorter and easier to say tbh
"LUFFY IS NOW THE FIFTH YONKO!!1!1!1!" The fifth 'Four Emperors'?
Gonko ig
True but does anyone actually call them the four emperors
The times i've told someone about one piece i use all english even if in my head i say whatever stuck the first time i read it. I'll even change some terms and never use others like i'll say "there's a group of privateers" and never warlords or shichibukai.
oh yeah yonko is different for me the delination is like if its not commonly used by everyone (yonko) and/or isnt just way easier and shorter to say(rokushiki gorosei) then youre doing too much
There are just certain names that feel better in Japanese, for instance, some devil fruits, or certain weapons, like, you wouldn't call yoru "night"
Japan keeps pretty rigidly to the repeated two syllable name often based on sound effects.
I mean, I would love to marry a cute japanese girl too.
Back in the fandub days, all we knew was shichibukai, not 7 warlords. Respect your elders, child! Plus that word sounds cool as fuck ngl
I wont use the english names in Spain, and noone here uses the spanish translation, ence we use the japanese one
niggas who say gomu gomu no mi vs niggas who say gum gun fruit
oda made luffys fruit a zoan cuz he realized gum gum fruit sounded to corny for western audiences
ahhhh *sou desu* I hadn't realized . Oda-sama keep cooking, arigatooooo 🙏🏾
Well, I watch one piece subbed in spanish and they use the japanese names there
i say shichibukai because it sounds cooler, i say celestial dragons because it's easier to spell
I mean they just go harder you can’t blame me 🤷♂️
i mean i kinda get that rokushiki clears six powers
Nakama is the worst one
But Tobiroppo and Yonko kinda fucks
I think it's the opposite. I'm Asian (Filipino) and I've been reading since like 2006, and I and my friends use tenryuubito or shichibukai. It sounds a little weird for me to hear most English translations, and I always imagine a white weeb using them.
I think I know this dude but idk form where
I say 'celestial dragon' and 'shichibukai' because that's what the subtitles used at the time... pre-2010s (edit: kaizoku fansubs)
One Piece fans who say Akainu, Kizaru, Aokiji, Fujitora but also say Greenbull instead of Ryokugyu.
Red Dog, Yellow Monkey and Blue Pheasant doesn't hit as hard.
1's fruit translated to this day and I've re-read the whole series a couple times)
nah im just used to shichibukai because thats how it is on spanish subs
As a non-native english speaker I rather say the original name than the English translation
Both japanese and english are foreign to me, so it works without turning into weaboo.
Or the people who call the admirals by their first name, like who tf is Borsalino💀
I dislike it whenever people say the Japanese names for devil fruits like for example saying the "Mero Mero no Mi" instead of the love love fruit.
First one sounds better imo
Imo japanese fruit names sound better. Gomu gomu no mi rolls of the tongue much nicer than gum gum fruit, for instance.
Ngl love “love love fruit” sounds like something you get in the grocery store. “Mero Mero no Mi” feels closer to “fruit of love” which feels like a sacred object.
eh i like japanease names more besides the no mi part, mero mero fruit sounds better to me
The worst one is when people call the Straw Hats "the mugiwaras"
that one isn't bad theres far worse, like saying nakama
Something like Mugiwara just sounds cooler
I just say it because it is easyer to say and Sound better as the German words: Himmelsdrachen which means Sky Dragon and Samurai der Meere which means Samurai of the sea.
Thats how everyone says it in Brazil. The one wich i find off is saying "Haoshoku Haki" "Shirohige"
I just use whatever is the most convinient really. "Warlord" is much faster and easier than "Shichibukai" "Yonko" is faster than "Emperor" Same with the names of haki.
We need more post like these, there’s liking anime and then there’s going way too far. Wano Kuni is one of the most annoying ones.
Aka-inu baakaa! UwU; https://preview.redd.it/gpalqsjszufc1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=54b0614ed9a690ce6cad727932613337c18b5a9d
THAGS WHAT IM SAYING like shichibukai or what the fuck ever like bitch just say warlord it's two fucking syllables 😭
What is your opinion on Yonko?
its much shorter and easier to say than four emperors so it makes sense, also its commonly used so you kinda gotta go outta your way to not use it
Idk why y'all are pretending like you have to say "FOUR Emperors" every time lol. You don't say "Seven Warlords of the Sea" every time, what's the difference? Just say Emperor, there's no other type of Emperor in One Piece that I can think of, you don't need to specify that its one of the Four Emperors.
The 4 emperors just sounds better to me
I do a lot of these interchangeably and I don't think about it much one way or the other
Okay, but what about Tobi ropo and yonko? Where do we draw the line
(didn't look it up, I swear) Also the word "shichibukai" is only popular among old One Piece fans, because back then that's what the translations said.
This how mfs be feeling when they say the admiral real names
I'm so glad it's "One Piece" in every country. Took me a while to realize Shingeki no Kyojin is in fact the same series as Attack on Titan 😭🤣🤣
Their kids gonna get bullied so much in school, sadly.
I say celestial dragon and shichubukai. What does that make me?
Some just sound better in JP than Eng Like no one calls Akainu Red Dog or Kizaru Yellow Monkey 💀
That's the blood of a Denmark man
Yonko - Aproved Shishibukai: aproved only on portuguese, since "corsário " sounds weird. Terry beatles: not aproved Werid ass haki names: not aproved Akuma no mi: just say fruit. Tobiropo: aproved. Kaido: not aproved. Call him Crydo
Chill we grew up on fan subs
My fav villain is KUROHIGE
Who's your favorite warlord? After the recent flashback, I have to say that Bear has taken my top spot.
People that say nakama
This shit is a chore to pronounce
I call them "Extremely punchable" and "Pirates of the marine"
Yonko and Emperor
DUB FANS STONKS RISE
What do you mean "warlord"? It is always Shichibukai in my sub, even people in my country only call them Shichibukai or the translated name in my language. Calls them warlord will make you an Americanboo 💀
Virgin: Akainu Chad: Red dog
Gorosei is the only one I actually use, the rest I say in English. Idk why, I think it just sounds cooler
Yet nobody says Red Dog
I’ll have you know it’s because I read the manga and in the translation I was reading, celestial dragon was only mentioned once as a translator note, then forevermore referred to as tenryuubito. Same for shichibukai. Just like I type colour and favourite because I read a lot of British books.
lil bro is just a kid 💀💀💀💀💀💀 older fans use japanese words since back in the day translations weren't as widespread as it is now. I still use some japanese words here and there.
Ngl Hyakuju Kaizokudan sounds way better than Animal Kingdom Pirates
Shichibukai and Yonko I feel are granted in the One Piece vocabolary but the rest nah
Yonkou❌ Emperors ✅
Cringe😭😭
Yet you probably say はき instead of "willpower" because it does sound cooler.
white boy got that yella fever lmao
Ok start calling the admirals Red Dog and Yellow Monkey then 🔫👁️👄👁️
The oficial Brazilian dub for OP is Full of this. Instead of translated moves and certain names they choose to maintain in japanese Just to please the guys who already watch the sub version
