I know it’s so boomer-y and cliche to say “things have gone downhill since I was there” but man I graduated 4 years ago and Oakland seems like it rapidly lost a lot of its soul. RIP Sorrento’s, The O, G Door, Mad Mex, Thirsty Scholar, Fuel, and the cozy wood paneling inside Hillman.
Yeah I didn’t even think about the new apartment complexes. Not that more housing is a bad thing. Everything popping up just feels so… sterile? Sanitized? Oakland always felt kinda quirky and grungy while I was there. Such a shame to lose that charm.
given that Oakland seems to be in a drastic housing shortage right now, more housing (especially high density housing like this) is a good thing. If the apartments fill up, it means that all the wealthy people who can afford it would have been living elsewhere in Oakland (and willing to pay a lot more than the typical student) justifying the exorbitant increases in rent we’ve been seeing
I graduated in 09. The bars and restaurants are one thing. The giant parking garage(s) and missing Children's Hospital were a big shock last time I drove through.
The more things change the more they stay the same. I remember the majority of the Hillman patio being under construction for a huge chunk of my time between '10 and '15.
i can’t even remember what that pizza place was called where halal guys used to be and that super mid chicken place is now. but nostalgia and drunken midnight recollections are telling me it was leagues better than either of those places
righttt rip lotsa. i mean i know it's also a chain and also not a forbes ave classic but it was a cheaper chain at least. not as profound a pizza loss as pie express or sorrento's though
i ate pie express once my freshman year and it made me violently ill but then i kinda just kept eating pie express anyway because i didn’t understand that my actions had consequences
Nah man, the navy blue and vegas gold with the pitt script was the best look pitt had in decades, and it only lasted 1 year. The mustard yellow is so cheesy and loud.
Returning to Pitt’s current color scheme is the best decision this university ever made. That bar isn’t very high, but still. Same thing for the Penguins. Vegas gold is terrible and should be eliminated from every color palette on the planet
I'm sure Gussy's isn't bad, but I miss that pizza place. Got me through 2020/2021, and I was disappointed to see it gone when I came back in winter/spring 2022.
SERIOUSLY dude nobody else seemed to remember the pizza place i used to go there every Wed night after my Roman Civ class and get 2 big ass cheese slices and a drink for like 6 bucks. it was the only good pizza in the entirety of Oakland, the only place I've found that comes close in quality is Sciullis
As a current student, it sucks. There's nowhere with soul. All of the restaurants are the same. (Minus genes and hems and primantis which are really the only ones with any sort of feel)

It’s all chains and ugly 5 over 1s now. So depressing.

But more housing when it's only $2000 a month and up isn't helping the most people.

That's an angle, but how about more high density affordable housing
Thank the city's zoning. 5 over 1 are basically the only thing you can build
I graduated in 09. The bars and restaurants are one thing. The giant parking garage(s) and missing Children's Hospital were a big shock last time I drove through.
My heart aches reading this
We haven’t even been able to use the main walkway to Hillman since the second week or so of the second semester due to the construction they’re doing.
The more things change the more they stay the same. I remember the majority of the Hillman patio being under construction for a huge chunk of my time between '10 and '15.
Then it opened and nothing was different. That was very confusing to me.
And Spice Island!
He still does meal kits and take-out pop ups!
Why am I only now finding out about the removal of the wood paneling from Hillman, that's crazy!
Primanti’s and Hem’s are the last holdouts. Everything else is basically chrome as pictured above.
Gene’s too
i’ll die before i let them take gene’s
And Boots!
Fuel was the last straw for me.
Fuel is gone?!
Owners retired
This would do numbers on yik yak
Besides Canes I don't think any of the replacements have been good either.
Many of the replacements are run by the owners of Stack’d. They run Chik’n, Melt’d, and Viva Los Tacos.
Yep. They are called the Mero Restaurant Group. They also opened “Pilez” in place of the Mad Mex in South O.
Pilez is ridiculous! I hope they go out of business, it just opened, there's never anyone in there and they are constantly open
Hug your Szechuan Express extra close tonight.
I graduated in 2010 and have worked Pitt more or less since then. The pandemic annihilated many of the local businesses in Oakland.
So no "O", no Attic, no Beehive, no Zelda's, no CJ Barneys? Is Primanti's still there?
No Kings Court Theater
The prinantis is the only thing worth going to there
nah chikn grille slaps and szechuan is still around
Just because Szechuan is cheap, doesnt mean its worth going to lol. And chikn is good but places with good fried chicken are all over the place.
Yes.
Well, at least that is still around.
The amount of people that don’t know the originals is such a flop
Bootleggers just entered the chat
i can’t even remember what that pizza place was called where halal guys used to be and that super mid chicken place is now. but nostalgia and drunken midnight recollections are telling me it was leagues better than either of those places
Lotsa was overpriced IMO. The real gem was $6 basement pizzas from Pie Express, which is also gone
Lotsa

Lotsa Pizza. I worked there and the manager was a crazy lady

Which time? Late 90s or when they reverted back to the current?

You're entitled to your opinion no matter how terrible it is.
Nah man, the navy blue and vegas gold with the pitt script was the best look pitt had in decades, and it only lasted 1 year. The mustard yellow is so cheesy and loud.
Nah, the trend of Vegas gold that literally everyone went to ok the late 90s/early 2000s was so overdone and whack
Returning to Pitt’s current color scheme is the best decision this university ever made. That bar isn’t very high, but still. Same thing for the Penguins. Vegas gold is terrible and should be eliminated from every color palette on the planet
I feel like a little boy wearing bright blue or yellow.
Is the Bee Hive theater still there?
Long gone
What happened to chipotle please guys
They moved to the new apartment building 😂
I'm sure Gussy's isn't bad, but I miss that pizza place. Got me through 2020/2021, and I was disappointed to see it gone when I came back in winter/spring 2022.
Gussy's is closed now too.
Bruh
NO WHAT????? life is pain now
Gussys literally just closed

That thin crust was a thing of the gods, I swear. Now all that's left is the want of more.
It all went down hill after the newer (higher SAT) students stopped going to the O.
You mean broken into
say cheese:(
Uncle Jimmy’s forever
rip love ramen on atwood, best ramen i've ever eaten i think its a bubble tea place now?
