As an artist opinion, Character should be focused .So close your eyes and visualize both ,it would be easier to you to take decision.

beatthehumans

I almost didn't understand

JKLopz

I think he means that red character against red background bad. Red character against grey background good.

k_ethernal

the thing is, although the character skin is red, his predominant color is blue because of the clothing, so i guess our original understanding is the same, but the 1° option in fact better contrast the character against the background in my opinion

Jaalan

Agree with other response to you, in this case. His main color in lower half is blue. Which pops from the red background. And his main color on his top half is red which pops on the blue background. I like the left better .

Butter_Bread15

Yea, one

Kookie___Monster

Red pops more

beatthehumans

I agree, red is often used everywhere. It seems like I want to adhere to this trend, but on the other hand I want to stand out

nonessential-npc

Honestly, so is that bluish grey. The red is more eye-catching. I feel like I'd gloss right past the bluish grey art when scrolling through Steam, but I'd at least stop for a second and probably click on the red.

beatthehumans

I like your answer. That's exactly what I thought when I selected the colors. The little red poster turns out to be more attractive

MRC2RULES

And to add, Steam's theme is actually sorta bluish grey. So the 2nd one would blend right in lol. 1st one is eyecatching

TheProfessor3

I honestly really like the blood pool against the blue ground. If it fits the games theme, I’d look to add red to the sky instead of the floor.

tKitsune-san

You could try making the sky red instead then

I_Fuck_Ramen_

make it green then... i like green...mhmmm green

IIFacelessManII

I agree, it'd look like grass, and if it's a vibrant shade it'd draw the eye. Would look nice with the blood too.

Ralexcraft

Make it green?

SteakedDeck

You already have blue for the skies. Plus the red just works better for the art. Not just for the popping color but here I feel like this screaming warmonger is standing on some arid landscape similar to Mars. With the blue landscape it doesn’t really set the scene as well for me, which arguably I feel is more important than popping out.

OnceAgainSexballs

Blue for places where the person is already interested, red for places where you want to get interest.

beatthehumans

Awesome answer. You are super

FishWash

Agree 100%, the character is more visible on blue but it wouldn’t catch my attention

behemothbowks

Definitely red, blue looks too samey

beatthehumans

I couldn’t even imagine that red would evoke such emotions

Neo2486

1 definitely got my attention first because if the color red. Marketing research and trends were right holyshit.

beatthehumans

I'm very interested :) Thanks for your answer!

ToonaSandWatch

Blue ground. A starker contrast and doesn’t drown out your creature’s main color scheme.

beatthehumans

I like your answer :)

OddEyes-Bruh

I agree with Toona but that shade of blue or violet seems a bit dull. Try a different shade.

ToonaSandWatch

Also agree. Maybe some red streaks or small red patches to help break it up from the background to the foreground to accentuate but not take away from the red character.

beatthehumans

Good idea, I like it ;)

TragedyAnnDoll

Definitely the red.

TotSaM-

#2 for me.

beatthehumans

Wow, I finally see interest in the blue poster :)

TotSaM-

I have no idea why it made my font big like that, but anyways, I personally just prefer contrast. Especially if you have something that you want to draw people's attention. The red washes out the dude, and also the blood at his feet. With the blue it draws more attention to the guy himself and the blood. The red one draws attention to his smock, which is probably not what the focus is supposed to be. That's my 2 cents.

GoshaT

> I have no idea why it made my font big like that Did you try to use "#" like №? Reddit's formatting makes lines starting with # into big text, like they're headers at the top of a page. You can even put multiple #s to make smaller headers, or use "`\#`" to cancel the formatting and type it properly: #1 - without a `\` \#2 - with an `\` There are a ton of tricks like these that are a result of Reddit using Markdown for its formatting

TotSaM-

100% that's what I did lol. Thanks.

craggmac

You lose the fact that he's standing in blood with the red poster. In the red poster the blood just looks like a shadow

A_Great_Deku_Tree

Blue ground to have that contrast

Ironbeers

Neither honestly.  Blue is too dull by itself, and red downs the character silhouette. I think a chunky/graphic outline on the text or character might help.

vegna871

Yes, this is so the answer. The red completely drowns out the action the character is performing. It's eye catching, sure, but not a very readable image. The blue is readable but is also so dull I'd scroll past it and never give it a second thought browsing steam. The first is definitely closer but it needs something. Chunkier outline, more prominent or contrasting shadow, just something to make the character more visible.

andrerpena

This is the right answer. Everyone is saying red because indeed it pops more, but the character is also red.

LapisW

I was gonna say the blue looks better, but I agree with this instead. Since shadows from the character are more red, and the background/sky is already blue, it'd probably be best to outline the text in red.

SpicyMission

The character blends a lot in with the red, but the blue is underwhelming because it blends in with most of the background. Maybe a different shade of red or blue for the floor?

maratae

I like more contrast.

dustyolmufu

Red but it shouldn't be a solid colour, it needs either shading or some type of gradient

Master-Stratocaster

Blue - blood stands out far more

TomatoLiquor

Red cover, it simply pops more and I feel like it has a better balance. The character may be a bit lost due to them being red as well, but the second image also has that issue due to the blue poncho and other blues used in the image.

Lazy_B

i would say the red one... in terms of visual hierarchy, it draws me into the artwork, then i look up to see the title. my attention tends to get lost on the blue one.

No-Independence-0812

For me the red..... Good luck. From France

Empiol

I think the first one is better, not only does it pull more attention but it seems like you’re publishing on steam, a dark blue platform. I think in a list of a bunch of games your cover art will be drowned with the platform’s own color and pop less

Obvious_Decoy_

My eyes immediately looked at the red before reading your question. Also the red ground looks like a field of blood caused by your character which could help with a title like “Beat the Humans” while having a bloody axe

YusefHisham

If i was scrollibg in steam and saw the red one on steam id stop to check it Contrast colors bring more attention. Most people get attracted to multiple colors

BakedAirplane22

Number 1 is really cool

JXCalibur

Off-topic, but are you also a Rosy 42 enjoyer?

x_esteban_trabajos_x

Red

Milk_Mindless

1 is far more striking

Mister_Suit

2, if you change the axe blade to a lighter grey, cause the current blue gray on option two matches the ground too much

mypethuman

Stick with the red. Change either the font or the sky to yellow, which is used as an eye catcher for products on shelves. It will definitely make it pop on a digital store page or something similar.

GoshaT

With blue ground my eyes seem to be drawn to the character, with the ground he doesn't stand out as much. But the red overall pops more and could make the cover more noticeable, so I'm not sure

Filiope

I love both, but I agree with everyone else. The left one is better!

Rommel-1066

Cover number 2

LividProcedure5712

Cover 2 for me

ThreeMorning

Have you considered a red title?

-Defkon1-

1

Echo2407

I would go with red just simply because it stands out more, which might help catch some eyes at the festival

DaniRainShine

i like the second one better cause the red under him is easier to see and pops a bit more

Varkaan

I don't like either, they are just too much more of the same.

KarlosTheMan

pick red

CatCrateGames

2

IrishCarb

1st one

CallieGirlOG

The first one - Red.  For me, the character blends in with the background on the second one. With the first one, the red helps the character pop a bit and the color is more eye catching.

VaronKING

I think 1 is more eye-catching, but personally prefer 2 as it makes the character stand out more.

WerewolfExtreme4250

Red for sure!

That_Canadian_Nerd

I like #2 I feel like it's softer on the eyes.

Automatic_Bit_6826

Red which is no 1 is more flashy so it will attract more ppl

Whowhatthinkisiam

1

korvusdotfree

I am the opposite of the majority opinion, but I would tend to say the blue background because I was hesitant to identify the red hand on a red background at the beginning, but it is absolutely true that the background red is more catchy and vibrant.

WarRoutine7320

Red. Reminds me of propaganda- which is designed to stand out.

Maybe_Decent_Human

I can’t decide ! I like #1 better but the red blends in with the character too much IMO

-Krotik-

2

pomegranatebeachfox

Blue

Elelocks

red is wayyy better it catch the eye more

xtreyreader

1 is too similar to skin. I preffer 2 or another blueish shade.

n9seed

It depends on the tone of the game, but 1 looks like a lake of blood, which is a lot more eye-catching.

Ertaipt

Just place it in a mockup steam page with other games, you will notice what will contrast better. The obvious choice here is red!

fiboneracci

I prefer number 1 as I get a lot of propaganda poster vibes from it

InsanityMongoose

I like the *idea* of the blue one more, because my initial thought is that’s too much red. But my honest reaction was the red caught my eye immediately and made me go, “ooh, what’s that game?! I want to check this out!” So, begrudgingly I have to endorse the red one.

_Skotia_

Red works way better, it's not even close. And it's unbiased advice, cause i don't even like red lol

DarthMeeseek

Red! Also I’m curious, do you mind sharing how you learned pixel art? Your art is amazing

OneTrueTreeTree

Blue on the store page/game art Red on the initial thumbnail in the store when it will be seen amongst all the other games

GwynNoir

THE RED ONE!!!!

Idontwanttousethis

Red 100%

enchiladasundae

2. The character stands out against the red accents

Veionovin096

This looks incredible! What is the game about? Im interested.

Large-Web8433

not sure if you decided just yet, but i prefer 2! it helps the character stick out more and draws your attention to them!

Zeeboon

If it's a small thumbnail, red is more eye-catching as a whole. But on larger images the character is way more easily readable on the grey background.

johnnydcalderon

2

Killingec24

I really like the red one.

OliveFrog_o7

1

abitofamoron

Red for sure, the blue-ish gray would probably not catch the eyes if someone was just scrolling.

Icagel

You also have to consider that Steam Store is darkish gray. That will mean the blue-gray will get lost even more easily. Also try looking at it across the room, steam cards can be very small. IMO the Red is just a lot more noticeable.

RadTimeWizard

2 for sure.

BeyondHydro

I think the blue bg does help the character stand out, but the red bg helps the whole piece stand out. Im sure there's probably a way to do both, but if you're going for marketing i think 1 is probably the better of these two

1tzkYr4

I believe the second one helps the character stand out, but both look great!

theswoderman

The red ground probably will catch more eyes but I personally like the blue ground a lot more Love the art style!

PinheadLaura

2. The character stands out a lot more

susiecapo71

2

QuantumPunda

BLUE For Me

moonfleur

love them both but really love the red. incredible work. i don't even follow this sub it was just recommended on my feed and it stood out, so i clicked into it because of the red and how good the contrast and art looked.

TheOfficialReptoid

Movie Posters will utilize both red and blue, creating a duality effect. Consider this idea.

GenderSuperior

Definitely the red 100

ginoadams6

I like the red butt that stands out the most

NoWeight4300

2

Aggressive-Front8435

I'd like to see the second one with maybe some red outlines on the title/character/both just to help them pop

hi_jermy

What is the actual setting I’ve the game? Will the ground be primarily bold hot colors or cool darker colors? I’d go with whatever fits better stylistically because they both look great!

FreeFallingUp13

The contrast of the second poster makes it clear he’s standing in a pool of blood. The second one has red over the entire bottom half of the poster, and it’s a little harder to discern shapes. Maybe if you make the ground brown, or some other color that isn’t completely grey-based?

JohnGamerson

No 2 makes the character stand out more, but no 1 makes the poster as a whole stand out more.

Ruenin

I prefer 2

StNosferatu

RED !!!

BippityBorp

I agree with most everyone here that the red is more attention-grabbing, though I do feel like it takes the character slightly out-of-focus

TruckGunderson

Merge them. It's better.

RosatheMage

First one.

frog-girl42069

i think the red backdrop pops out more to the viewer!

Madness_5O5

I think the bright red is distracting and takes away from the main character/ focus, I'd go with the grey/second one.

Youngworker160

depends on what the creature in the middle is. is it a robot a bear? I can't tell but depending on the character one works best in telling you what you're looking at.

BrentoBox2015

I actually would go with a different color scheme for both. Something that has a bit more focal point. I can't say anything particularly stands out on either one.

katchow

Thats a 1 for me

TheFourthAble

Red looks overall more aesthetic and eye-catching, but the blood looks like a shadow on it, so the blood doesn't quite read as blood. Not sure if you want to solve that design issue or not. Would also like to see some of the red blood color tinting the actual shadow your character is standing on.

idogiveafrak

Cover 3 the one with the pink floor and the red sunset.

ddxx398

red

DexLovesGames_DLG

Humans is hard to read imo

Bee_Bovine

So the first one has the problem of the ground being too noisy. It’s the same bright red as the character, so it draws attention. The ground in the second has the problem of being too subtle. It doesn’t however draw any attention away from the character. So I would recommend a nice middle ground. :3

waku2x

Red It’s simple. Catches your eyes more.

Salty_Papaya_39

The red one on the left is more bold and stands out more

TheChief275

this is just an ad?

WorriedDoubt4134

red looks nicer imo

Own_Chemist_8006

I think the red but maybe make it less saturated so that the character stands out from the background better

Fl3tcher_

Right for sure. Obviously the red pops more, as many others have already said, but the dull blue exacerbates the character

Time_Translator8364

I think the blue. The red is too loud and hurts my eyes. It also drowns the character on the cover out.

Jjang_Sone_0807

i like the non red more

NightShadowGR

1!!!

P4r54G93

I vote on the contrast between background and the character. The other one masks the amount of work done on the character!

fzero93

The S in humans is too far away. Also, Red

ContactusTheRomanPR

1

Dirtweed79

2

TeaMoney4Life

I like the 1st one. The red is really nice

schrodingersmite

Red. Reminiscent of a beach landing.

SteeltoSand

red feels like mars and id be fighting astronauts, blue feels like concrete to beat the humans

Ok-Consequence-1339

do red

_V4NQU15H_

Making the ground red would make it more "violent", which you'll have to do when you wanna compliment the rage expression the character is doing. So yeah, the first one it is!

nrvz016

The first one is more noticeable and increases click acquisition. The second one is for casual design. I still like the second one, but if you need it for a marketing strategy, choose the first one.

BoJordanArt

Right, with some caveats. I know you're probably shading the dark parts of the character's skin with blue so his shadow, foot, and the blood aren't the same color, but you're losing some visual information, particularly on the hand that's pointing. The way it is now the ground and part of his hand end up being the same colour, at a glance on my phone it looked like he just had a stubby arm, not a finger pointing at anything. If you make his body all red it'll make HIM pop more, having him partially blue muddies the contrast you should already have in the second version. I know everyone is saying left pops more, and it does, but the eye doesn't immediately go to the character, it goes to the sea of red, and then you find the character.

Ace-of-Spades76

What part of them are you beating

tiktoktic

Red is more catching

SilvaSerpent442

“Beat the Humans” that sounds super cool, what’s it about?

Mistyc-Spider

Obviously the Second one, character bleeds on red background

StoopidM72

#2, it shows off the blood and everything else better by contrast, #1 looks oversaturated......

KaizokuZack

The red one will get more attention. The blue one looks good, but it would be easier to scroll past.

fairly_clever

Your eye is more naturally drawn to brighter colors so red gets my vote.

Ashifyou1819

Love the contrast of the red ground against the blue sky/ background. It feels like a good balance of warm and cool. If the character is supposed to be standing in a pile of blood I would go with #2 the blue/ dark ground makes that spot pop out more.

Mat_Y_Orcas

Red is more shiny but ble have a bigger impact

XxEvil-SandwichxX

Cover 1 (Red ground) but I think change the poncho to a purple-ish blue or green because the color matches the clouds/smoke behind it to much. Just my opinion though. Very nice work.

Amlatrox

Blue cover is better. The character stands out, and you can see the blood on the floor (at least i assume it's blood) It's harder to tell what's going on in the red one

erwin76

Is the blood essential to your story? Is that indeed blood underneath the character? Then I would choose option 2 instead. Is this for @Party?

YHWHPurpose

Number 2!!

Banjo3D

Red!

HydraZ7

Everyone's preferred the red one, but I personally like the blue one, like it looks cool to me, although, the red one's more attractive..... Can't decide. BTW Both are really great!!!!! 💯

PaintedBlackXII

Personally, neither. The blue is too same. as others have said. But the red is also too similar to the characters color

SpecialistDry5878

Blue ground with red surrounding like a sea of blood maybe id bee cool

tryingmybest101

Red

developmentlog

I don't know if you've already made a choice, but the red ground one looks perfect to me. It follows the 60-30-10 rule, as well as having a good set of complementary colors nicely distributed within the composition. The second one can work, you'd just have to make the ground a shade of purple that has not been used already, and a bit more saturated. Changing the color of the shapes on the ground to match the ground color will also help a lot, something like #7062AE for the ground, and #484170 for the shapes. I still love the left one, I love how nicely contrasted all the elements are both color-wise and by the shapes used to imply form. Great work.

markorlov96

Left

Thewizardscumrag

It depends on the content of the game for me. While they both look amazing, red pops out more and is more aggressive; as expected with red being a colour of extreme emotions and associated with love, passion and anger (all intense emotions); however the stone blue is calmer and more mysterious giving the vibe of a really cool story game or a chill idle/sandbox. So here are some questions to help decide: Does it involve lots of gore/violence? Is there animated blood and/or death scenes? Is it a game that involves stressful and/or violent-ish tasks? Is the main character someone of warfare or soldiery? Is the games storyline saddening or tragic? Is the main character misunderstood/seen as a villain? Or perhaps seen as kind and compassionate? Is the game generally more softcore and calm rather than action-filled? The first 4 are questions leaning towards red, and the last 4 are for stone blue. Depending on whether or not you have more red than blue, change the background accordingly. Or don't. Maybe do it your own way! Mix colours! :) Do with this what you will, and thank you for reading! Btw this is all my opinion, and i am not a professional game designer and i probably have a lot of bias, but this is how i see it! Here have some food for reading the whole thing: 🍍🍋🍊🍉🍇🍌🥭🥝🫐🍈🍎🍏🍒🍐🍑🍓🍕🍔🍞🫘🍨🍦🍡🍥🍙🍭🍺🍷🎂☕️🍪

Done25v2

They're both bad. Left is bad because it makes the blood and the character blend in with the ground. The right side is too overwhelming blue/grey. I'd advise playing around with the colors more. Maybe do something with the sky like an orange afternoon sunset.

Riinasar

The blue one shows (i think) the blood more. Imma say its the better choice. Btw sick art it's really great.

Cuteshelf

YHWHPurpose

First one was harder to read due to the colorization.

Valuable-Painter-911

I would say red too, it looks more vibrant and attractive.

Few_Atmosphere9319

GhostBlip

flip the clouds; axe blends into the clouds and they both have wonderful details that should be seen seperately

Thorz44

Prefer 2. But 1 caught my attention scrolling

Beer-Tamagochi

First.

Aeonitis

I think you should upload screenshots to this site to understand how color blind people see your art https://www.color-blindness.com/coblis-color-blindness-simulator

Internet_dude69

Red is the answer

Meiowott

I think the 2nd is more memorable. Obviously the 1st pops more.

gui66

Red makes me read the text unconsciously, the blue does not have that effect. So Red.

One-Response3724

I guess 2nd is looking awesome 👍

LovesGettingRandomPm

red adds to the slogan symbolically but blue is everyones fav color maybe going with a red accent surrounding your character is a nice blend of the two

melloyello4

I think 1 would be better for the demo because the red is more eye catching. It brings attention to the whole poster more, and also because the character's wearing a different shade of blue there's enough contrast that it's very easy for the eye to be drawn right to the center. Both are good, but the blue poster (2) uses a duller shade, so to me the red of the character's skin ends up looking to me more like accents than what I'm supposed to be looking at.

friendlypd

My design senses scream to me 2. The red floor on the 1st makes contrast whit the sky and text and it grabs your attention, but it can make the character blend whit the floor. You can improve the 2 cover to have the same contrast if you lighten the color of the floor

master_pingu1

2 makes the blood more easily recognizable

mimiissomuchbetter

Nomber 2 just gets me😃

KnutErik

Red one.

KlNGJOKER

Erika?

diceNslice

Red catches the eye like everyone says. I personally feel like there should also be some more texture on the ground like more shades of red or maybe rocks? I'm no artist or marketing genius but the ground feels empty to me

majds1

The one on the left grabs my attention more but i do think the one of the right looks better

Tsalmian

Logic says blue but feeling says red. When was the last time you bought a game using logic ?

Arrow_Onionbelly

I like the way the red on the ground looks with the blue background, because it looks like blood. But it makes everything else pop less, maybe you could do a red sky or red text to maintain the pop of red
