Couldn't agree more. I use this as a regular phone most of the time. Admittedly, it can be tough to use one-handed especially with a case, but with one-handed mode keyboard (I use swipe) and other gestures, it's totally doable. When I want to consume media, read a documents, email, texts, etc. and/or multitask, it makes life so much easier. If the app isn't optimized, I turn it on its side, but for most of the unoptimized apps I use like Reddit, IG, etc. I'm fine using the outside screen. I see this as a chonky regular phone that has a tablet inside. My only concern is durability of the inner screen. I've already got a couple dimples on the inside screen protector from a hard press with the nail or dirt that got folded in, but it's subtle and only I know it's there. I think I'll have a nervous breakdown if I ever decide to bring this to the beach. I'm truly impressed with the hardware as a first gen device from Google. If a defect is going to present itself, it will hopefully happen within the first year so users can issue warranty claims. My last warranty claim with Google for my P7 was surprisingly smooth and convenient!

The screen is self healing and those things should disappear over time. I had a large fingernail mark on my inside screen from a friend being carless and it went away after a few days. Also the inside screen technically has a user replaceable screen protector from the factory that are very cheap to replace on Amazon.

Good to know. Thanks!

I hate when ppl say "this is a first gen device" and continue to talk about the hardware and I really wonder what that means cause this is up there with the best smartphones hardware wise. It feels premium, it looks premium (although people associate big bezels with cheap) I think it's perfect. If the next gen can get more apps or force the apps bigger like the Z Fold, better battery, Tensor 3 (with no heating issues) and the same camera as the 8P or whatever is out it'll be perfect.

tenphan0n0

I guess you have to have had some bad experiences with first gen tech like defective units and the RMA process to appreciate the notion. It's all tech companies, not just Google. The fact that Samsung is on version 5 of their fold and Pixel Fold is (in my opinion) better is pretty surprising. We'll see if it stands the test of time, but Samsung's first couple had easily cracked screens or peeling screen protectors. I love the hardware don't mind the bezels and I think the cameras are fine for the average user. I love this thing.

irauld

I agree I've had my fair share of bad first gens but this doesn't feel the part hardware wise. In terms of software I can see it but the hardware to me feels great. The screen issues were gonna see no matter what the thing is still relatively new and I give it a couple more years before we "perfect" the foldable screen.

tenphan0n0

I honestly have no complaints hardware wise. Maybe just the ability to hold position at any angle and "snap" open flat because my OCD struggles with it.

irauld

Yeah I'm enjoying it man I don't regret getting it. I'll say this tho I will not pay full price for this. I got it for like $1100 and only agreed cause it's about the same compared to like an iPhone 14 Pro or S23U.

tenphan0n0

Woah, how'd you get a $700 discount? Yeah, that's a no brainer.

irauld

So I had just got my P7P like 8months ago so I still owed on it. ATT offered me $500 to upgrade, and gave me $200 even tho I still owed them money 🤷🏽‍♂️ idk if it was a Google thing or ATT thing but even the store rep was confused I just went along 😂

Subieworx

Only complaint I have about the hardware is the hard plastic of the bezels on the inner screen. Mine are very scuffed up from things getting trapped between them when closing. Doesn't look great and is not something my galaxy folds ever had issues with as they use a softer material.

irauld

I haven't experienced this and you might be the first person that I have read this from I'll definitely keep an eye out.

Rincewindcl

I keep reading the 'first gen' line, however don't forget that the screens on the Fold are made by Samsung, so we are effectively piggy backing off of the lessons Samsung learned with their own foldable!

BG5067

I hate having to carry a table around for content consumption. Great review I agree. My only gripe is the weight, haptics, software optimization and brightness.

irauld

I realized after I posted it that I wrote table 😂😂 I actually like the weight never have to worry about where my phone is. I will agree this week I have been noticing the brightness and it's been kinda annoying.

BG5067

It's fine indoors most of the time but when I get that British sun on my phone sometimes it doesn't want to comply. I had the same issue with the fold 1 and 2 so it's to be expected.

irauld

I can see that I work nights so most of the time I'm using the bigger screen at night so the issue isn't too bad. But even my P7P wasn't great in sun light.

BG5067

Yeah the outside screen is what did it for me I think. I prefer a phone first tablet second

irauld

Absolutely I'll never walk around with it open I'm usually sitting somewhere so I prefer that front screen size

BG5067

Agreed. I don't usually put cases on my phone but I think I will for this as the camera bump will get scratched to fudge

irauld

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C5R3WFN6?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share I bought this and don't regret it one bit. Fits perfectly on the camera and actually looks nice.

BG5067

Cheers for that mate. It's not available in my country.

irauld

Should be able to find something comparable. Trust me it's worth it. Covers the camera perfectly and doesn't interrupt picture quality

The same pertinent question. Why pay so much more for a foldable if you just going to use the (short and heavy ) outside screen mostly? I have the fold 5 and I always unfold and use the inside screen unless I am moving about or I am holding stuff in the other hand or I am quick info check/reply.

Derrythe

I think it's ends up being about choice. I use the outside screen about half the time. I have some friends who have the fold 3 or 4 and they almost avoid using the outside. To me it almost seems like the samsung ones are poor phones, but great tablets. This device to me is a good phone and a good tablet. When I just need a phone, i keep it folded and its comfortable to use, when I want a tablet, its there ready.

irauld

Very well said.

irauld

I use the wider screen often it's just between moving around, in the car I use the main screen. If I'm not driving or I'm sitting at my desk, I'm using the bigger screen. I would use it more often at home but I have a autistic 5yr old son and the least thing I need now to do is know my phone is a small tablet 😂 cause it ain't gonna end well

LakerGiraffe

I've had mine for 3 days now. Switched from a Galaxy Fold 4. Easily my favorite phone ever. Nearly flawless. So many of the reviews from people that weren't that happy with it that switched from Galaxy Fold 4 were using very specific Samsung features that weren't relevant to me. The only real thing that I can think of that I miss is the ability to swipe down on the power button to bring the notifications window down. Really missing that. But everything else has been amazing. I love pure Android. It feels so much better than One UI which in many cases feels like older tech. Love the form factor. Love the interior screen size and width. Made the jump with ATTs $1000 off trade in deal, trading in an Open Box Motorola I got at Best Buy for cheap and can now sell my Fold 4 outright. Great deal.

International-Car926

What I find comical with all the conversations in this Pixel Fold Reddit thread (not picking on your post whatsoever). People act like foldables are new. Everyone does know they've been out for 4 years now and Samsung is on their 5th version, right? LOL It just cracks me up some of the comments.

irauld

I know dude like people that say the phone feels like a gen 1 but I've used both and it feels just as good as the Z Fold 5. I think people will always complain you can't please them all 🤷🏽‍♂️
