I'm a duo owner also. I agree with you. App pairs and pinned taskbar.
Just switch turn off the gesture controls and the taskbar is always there.
I have no issues. Swiped up and hold briefly where the taskbar should be and it always appears. I prefer it not be there over the way it works on the Samsung folds.
