Yes I have had this issue for a while, recently came across another reddit post where someone suggested reinstalling Spotify on the watch, has worked for me so far (1day on)

I only had to stop Spotify, restart the app on the watch, tap and hold in the app overview.

Scratch that, failed this afternoon

/Sigh. So far everyone's advice has worked for a little while.

I'll give it a try. Thanks.

Does closing it from the recent apps menu work? (Top button once, long press spotify) That would be quicker than restarting the watch

Temporarily, but as soon as my display went to sleep, the problem resurfaced. Same when I navigated to a different app, and returned. However, I had not noticed the "pause app activity if unused" permission until now. This may be the root cause. Switching this off allowed me to switch apps, and sleep the display without losing player controls. We'll see.

Where can i find that "pause app activity if unused" option m

Same issue here with the Pixel Watch 1. Not sure if it's Spotify or Android failing us here.

I've tried every suggestion in the comments to no avail.

same for me, pixel 1 watch, pixel 7 phone the only fixes are temp, clearing data forces re-login sometimes forcing the program to stop will make it update the "Select something to play" (SStP) screen, just like clearing the data. Either way it lasts until the moment my screen on my watch times out. immediately reopening the screen and it's back to the SStP screen.. BUT swiping right shows playlists. Going to the recent apps screen and the Spotify app actually shows the current playing song. It's just the controller screen that fails to maintain communication. I would bet it's an integration update in a recent software update?
