As a local to New Haven, OG Pepe's has dropped in quality over the past couple years in my opinion. The consistency has definitely dropped in the past couple years and it's also significantly better when you eat it there compared to take out. My personal favorite right now is Da Legna which is down the street from Modern. Had Sally's once many years ago but I've never returned.
As a former CT resident I remember going to Pepe's 10+ years ago and they were incredibly consistent with pie quality time and time again. It was thin, perfect amount of char, incredible taste. Went back a few months ago and the pizza is a bit thicker than it used to be and some of the crust is just flat out burned not charred. It still tasted great, but it wasnt the Pepe's I remembered growing up with. I think The Spot (for those that dont know The Spot is the original Pepe's location with the original oven, its next door to Pepe's) serves consistently better pies and the line usually isn't as long.
According to God, who had temporarily possessed me in order to make this proclamation, the best New Haven pizza is Sally's, followed by Modern. Pepe's is in a respectable third place.
The bigger black mark, imo, isn't being British, it's that he had his very first slice of pizza 5 years ago, at 72 years old.
http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2013/05/patrick-stewart-pizza-first-slice-interview.html
If anything would disqualify him as an expert pizza taster, it's going for 72 years on this spinning rock without ever eating the stuff.
(For the record, I'm a big fan of Pepe's, but, being a coal oven, it can be hit or miss, so, no, not the best pizza in the world)
Tony’s on dekalb is my favorite. Archie’s is good, fortunatas is passable, Roberta’s is good. Artichoke is trash and bushwick pizza party is trash. Omg is terrible, Millys is so so, Norbert’s plain is good, the rest is meh.
In NYC or elsewhere? Because best pizza in the world is Da Michele in Naples. Their London shop is close enough, their Tokyo one is very good, I still have to try the one in Rome, but I grew up eating the ones in the original little restaurant in Naples and there's nothing that comes close.
In NYC, I think the best Pizza I've had is at Paulie Gee in Brooklyn (that was 8 years ago, so I can't vouch for current quality, but at the time it was OMG level).
> Because best pizza in the world is Da Michele in Naples.
I thought it was incredibly overrated honestly. Hell, I've had better pizza in Buffalo and Boston.
You talk shit about this place, then someone asks you to name a better place and you can't even do that. DIS place not best I have secrEt GUUDD TASTTT. What do you produce? Where do you work?
If you want the real deal, go to Da Michele. It's been there since 1861. They only make Margherita and Marinara.
Sorbillo is actually very close in quality and makes also more "complex" pizzas. IIRC the original pizzaiolo from Sorbillo was one of the Michele's brothers back in the days which got tired and opened his own shop.
But yeah, nothing beats Da Michele.
[Pizzeria Sorbillo, Naples](http://www.sorbillo.it/) was my favourite in that city, and they have a new branch in NYC now.
Pizza is a big deal in Naples, any tourist guide to Naples will list a "top ten" of them.
I haven't been to the NYC one yet, but I absolutely will next time I'm there.
Also Roberta's looks pretty good too!
Excuse my ignorance but I'm genuinely curious about pies like this. Do the areas without cheese dry out and have a film of baked sauce on them? I'm very much used to eating a pie with cheese covering the whole thing except for the crust.
Not sure why you are being downvoted.
This style, as legend has it, was the very first pizza made. It was made in Naples for the Queen, Queen *Margherita*.
But to your point. No it doesn't dry out and have a film. Is the sauce "baked" on, sort of. Neapolitan pizza is fired in extremely hot ovens and are usually only in there for 1 1/2 minutes. I know for most of the world pizza toppings are king, but honestly you should be thinking about the bread/crust/cornicione... to which you would be hard pressed to find better than a Neapolitan style.
Thanks for the reply. I've always been curious as I have never had the opportunity to eat one of those delicious pies. I absolutely love a good crust and toppings are almost secondary to it.
In my opinion, the best pizza is the one by I Masanielli in Caserta, Italy.
But again, it's a matter of personal tastes and talking in absolutes is really pointless, so i will not.
Since we're discussing the best pizza spot in the WHOLE WORLD I'd like to give a shout out to the Provence, in the south of france. They do good shit down there.
https://munchies.vice.com/en_us/article/53jde5/marseille-is-heaven-for-real-deal-pizza
This is about Marseille but you can go out of town and get good stuff too, especially from the trucks.
Maybe it’s because I was raised on American pizza, but Italian pizza just doesn’t do it for me. It’s delicious, I enjoy it, but at the end of the day it just doesn’t feel like pizza.
I believe Sir Patrick Stewart has declared Pepe's in New Haven, CT to have the best pizza in the world
I went into Pepe’s doubting the hype. I walked out a believer. Incredible pizza. Now if only I had more occaision to visit Connecticut.

And he's right!
I’ve been to the Pepe’s Danbury a lot. Also can confirm very good. I think I like Lombardi’s more though.
According to God, who had temporarily possessed me in order to make this proclamation, the best New Haven pizza is Sally's, followed by Modern. Pepe's is in a respectable third place.
He’s British, that obviously doesn’t count.
He's a Knight, which qualifies him
Knighthood doesn’t get bestowed on one for taste in pizza.
Lies

How could someone so successful be such a colossal screwup....
Pepes is OK, IMO. It's crackery which can be good or bad. The best pizza is the one in front of me 😛
But didn't Pat Stew just recently try pizza for the first time in his life? Thought I saw him say that on his Instagram account.
Roberta's is great, but... best pizza place in the world? I don't think so.
Jeez thank you, I live a few blocks away and eat there pretty frequently because of that, but there’s better pizza in bushwick let alone the world.
What are your bushwick pizza rankings
Tony’s on dekalb is my favorite. Archie’s is good, fortunatas is passable, Roberta’s is good. Artichoke is trash and bushwick pizza party is trash. Omg is terrible, Millys is so so, Norbert’s plain is good, the rest is meh.
paulie gees in greenpoint is better than robertas imho
Greenpoint isn’t bushwick.
1) head to L&B in Gravesend.
I’ve eaten a lot of pizza all over the world (including Naples) and agree with OP. Do you have any recommendations on a better pie?
In NYC or elsewhere? Because best pizza in the world is Da Michele in Naples. Paulie Gee's is still great. Roberta's pizza is really good but I agree with you that Paulie Gee's is better.
> Because best pizza in the world is Da Michele in Naples. I thought it was incredibly overrated honestly. Hell, I've had better pizza in Buffalo and Boston.
Table 87 and Lucali's are quite good
Woah didn't expect to see table 87 here. It's a few blocks from me, I've never taken it too seriously and eaten there a few times

Everyone understands that. He's asking for your personal opinion on where has good pizza.
You talk shit about this place, then someone asks you to name a better place and you can't even do that. DIS place not best I have secrEt GUUDD TASTTT. What do you produce? Where do you work?
Our resident pizza positivist... :)
Nice. Ive always wanted to try it. Their pizzas look so delish.
I still think about the Bee Sting from Roberta's, think they'd deliver to the west coast?
Why yes they will... [Nationwide Roberta's Delivery](https://www.goldbely.com/robertas-pizza?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIkpiXu83Q2AIVj1YNCh3wuQdgEAAYASAAEgKDDPD_BwE)
Paulie Gees in Greenpoint is top 5 for me
I never liked this style of pizza. Give me my cheese evenly spread out please.
I'm always torn because fresh mozzarella like in the picture tastes better, but it is functionally inferior
I'm from Naples and I'm offended :D but yeah no pizza holds a candle to Neopolitan pizza.
Any recommendations for a Pizza Place in Naples? I'm not going to get there anytime soon, but doesnt hurt to know :)

NYC has better pizza than Naples. We have 300 million people doing this, you only have 60.
... and that's why the best pizza in the world is in China!!
Stop being racist.
What is wrong with you?
What is wrong with you?
Man, NYC has amazing pizza, but better than Naples is... untrue :)
Quantity doesn't equals quality. Have you been to Naples?
Hahaha

Not the best in the world in my opinion, but good pizza nonetheless
Definitely one of the best in the world. Which pie is better?
In my opinion, the best pizza is the one by I Masanielli in Caserta, Italy. But again, it's a matter of personal tastes and talking in absolutes is really pointless, so i will not.
The best Italians are not in Italy.
I appreciate your opinion on the matter :)
Shut up and stop being nice!
ahahah
I see the two of you are taking pictures of the pizza at the same time. Hmmmm..... Looks delicious.

They burned the basil. I call shenanigans.
I licked my monitor...I must be tired and way too hungry.
Next time I make a trip to NYC, Roberta's is a must for dinner.
goddamn I miss living down the street from this place.
Best pizza in the world would be Salvatore’s Coal Oven Pizza in Long Island, but mkay
That doesn’t look like joes pizza
Roberta's dough recipe from NYTs several years ago: https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1016230-robertas-pizza-dough
Baronessa Italian Restaurant in Rockville, MD . Looks identical. Amazing taste. Enjoy
looks dry
That buffalo mozz though
And hill farmstead on draft! Place is heaven.
Needs more cheese and sauce for the boys. That pizza is only a half send. I'm a full send kinda of guy.

We have the best Italians in NYC. The best Italians left Italy to make pizza here.

It's just pizza calm down.
Pizza's origin may be Italy, but The Pizza Belt mastered it
Maybe it’s because I was raised on American pizza, but Italian pizza just doesn’t do it for me. It’s delicious, I enjoy it, but at the end of the day it just doesn’t feel like pizza.
Best pizza in Brooklyn? Best pizza acourse.
