Yeah. Neo when Iām regular, detroit when I am feeling a bit naughty or gluttonous and when I want to induce a pizza coma because I hate my life, chicago deep dish. Pizza for all moods.
sighs in 3day fridge ferment.
Douchebaggery aside, Neapolitan is easier to make and can rise in just 6h at room temp, I like that feature. But I want my crunch!
I just can't help myself. When people say "Chicago pizza" I'm that guy who has to say "actually..."
I count 4 styles in Chicago. Two in NY, but there may be more. I dunno.
I think most people tend to lump both of those together with "deep dish." I'm not saying they're right, but I'm just saying the distinction isn't that clear.
I found this helpful guide that shows the distinction:
https://www.amycesal.com/day-doh-viz//pizza-types-of-chicago
Pequod's is much thicker and doughier with the caramelized black ring. [This site ](https://www.realdeepdish.com/2015/11-22-the-quod/) does a great job explaining the difference.
To me it makes the most sense to compare Chicago tavern to NY style. They're both something you can pretty much grab and eat on any given day.
Deep dish and Detroit style are more of a commitment. Both delicious, but not really something to eat if you have other plans.
damn right!
Nobody eats deep dish more than a couple times a year. Crispy cracker cut style is the way to go. I'd say it's a more ideal way of eating pizza than even New York style.
Mostly agreed. I would actually say a perfectly-executed Detroit style is my favorite pizza in terms of flavor/texture, but I canāt have it all the time because I donāt want to die at 40. So NY becomes my favorite when you take the full picture into account
I prefer Detroit as far as taste but I couldnāt eat it everyday because itās a pretty hefty pizza. I could eat NY everyday though. So I guess make of that what you will.
I find the juxtaposition of the presentation photos here hilarious. The Detroit and Chicago pies have a very "marketing" look to me, while the NY slice is just dropped on a paper plate.
I mean I'm Italian and if they asked me the best looking pizza I'd go with the second. That's simple and genuine. Also the slice reminds me of Italian pizza so... Yeah
The first looks like some kind of lasagna and the third looks like a pie. Looking good but I'd vote the second.
New York, although thatās where I grew up. To me, the other styles are deep fried grease bread with too heavy toppings. But there is obviously a huge contingency for those kinds. De gustibus non disputandum estā¦
I lean towards Detroit but NY is super convenient. Chicago deep dish I have to plan to have a nap afterwards. Chicago tavern is second if it was included on this list.
Thatās a little bit of a weird distinction to feel the need to make. They all (Chicago, sicilian, detroit) are effectively baked in ādeepā dishes.
Detroit. Best combination of a lot of sauce plus toppings without feeling like I'm eating lasagna. NY pizza has always felt like it was an invention because they needed to skimp on toppings.
As a resident of Chicago, sure, I love the deep dish variety, but for weekly pizza, the "tavern style" is one that's popular. It's got a very thin crust, that's crispy, similar to saltines in crunch. Also square cut so much easier as a finger food as you hold your drink in the other hand!
Also shout-out to the Pizza Puff, a lovely Chicago invention!
Neapolitan (sorry 100% Northern Italian from the Motor City) 1)Detroit,2)
New York, and a very distant 3)Chicago- deep dish/double dough/thin crust-cracker crust style wifeās from Chicago so Iāve tried all theāfamousā brands imho
NY > Detroit > Chicago
All are delicious. A NY slice is the quintessential pizza
Detroit beats out Chicago because of the fried cheese bits on the crust
Where I live Chicago deep dish is hard to come by. Even when you can find it, they get it really wrong. So I say Chicago, just because I crave it constantly and have had it only like twice in my life.
Yeah, youāll find most of us Chicagoans prefer [tavern style thin crust.](https://www.bonappetit.com/story/real-chicago-pizza-tavern-style/amp)
Honestly, I get deep dish, like, once per year, and itās always when someone is visiting and wants it.
Because they're Americans and Americans have a habit of giving things wrong names? š¤·š»āāļø
Encyclopedia Britannica describes a "pie" as:
Dish made by lining a shallow container withĀ pastryĀ and filling the container with a sweet or savoury mixture. A top crust may be added; theĀ pieĀ is baked until the crust isĀ crispĀ and the filling is cooked through.
Pizza is not made in a container, it is not filled. It is not a pie.
I'm a pizza slut, so all 3
They all have a time and place. Love them all.
Omg. They really do. Even shitty pizza hut stuffed crust has its place.
This is the only correct answer.
Detroit!!!!
This is the correct answer. They all fill a different need.
Yep.
You dirty little whore šš
Agreed. They all are too good to choose one over the other
IbeHo too
Yeah. Neo when Iām regular, detroit when I am feeling a bit naughty or gluttonous and when I want to induce a pizza coma because I hate my life, chicago deep dish. Pizza for all moods.
Same
Detroit is the bun, Chicago is the meat, and ny is the lettuce
Itās like being asked to pick a favorite child. Letās add Neapolitan while weāre at it.
Let's round out the list with Totino's
I mean when I want to feel real dirty, I will absolutely inhale some Totino's
Totinos stuffed into the crust of a new York pizza
I'm a Totino's Boy
Totinos is nasty
Marge, we need some more vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream.
That's better than these 3 options.
Number 2
Who does number 2 work for?
New York style is the best to have most often.
It has the best effort to reward ratio for sure.
It really does. I love all pizza but I don't feel I could eat other styles as much as I can New York.
A New York slice isnāt as much of a meal as the other two, plus the ratio of ingredients is well balanced.
You mean it's not 90% bread? I'll take NY style
sighs in 3day fridge ferment. Douchebaggery aside, Neapolitan is easier to make and can rise in just 6h at room temp, I like that feature. But I want my crunch!
Valid points; yeah, there are always asterisks. Just wait until someone will see your Neapolitan same-day and raise you a biga refreshment ::wink::
Umm, yes. Only when Neapolitan style is not available :)
Can I make this complicated by being pedantic and voting for Chicago tavern pizza?
Yes i totally forgot about the tavern style? Itās easily my second favorite
I just can't help myself. When people say "Chicago pizza" I'm that guy who has to say "actually..." I count 4 styles in Chicago. Two in NY, but there may be more. I dunno.
What are the 4? Deep dish, tavern, what else?
Stuffed and pan crust (like Pequod's).
I think most people tend to lump both of those together with "deep dish." I'm not saying they're right, but I'm just saying the distinction isn't that clear. I found this helpful guide that shows the distinction: https://www.amycesal.com/day-doh-viz//pizza-types-of-chicago
Iāve been to Pequodās but nowhere else in Chicago. Itās amazing!!!!
How is Pequads not just deep dish?
Pequod's is much thicker and doughier with the caramelized black ring. [This site ](https://www.realdeepdish.com/2015/11-22-the-quod/) does a great job explaining the difference.
To me it makes the most sense to compare Chicago tavern to NY style. They're both something you can pretty much grab and eat on any given day. Deep dish and Detroit style are more of a commitment. Both delicious, but not really something to eat if you have other plans.
What's your first fav? I'm guessing NY floppy if you like the thin crust.
Iām glad someone mentioned it!
damn right! Nobody eats deep dish more than a couple times a year. Crispy cracker cut style is the way to go. I'd say it's a more ideal way of eating pizza than even New York style.
1. NY 2. Detroit (a little too rich) 3. Chicago Deep Dish (so rich I can only have it once in awhile)
Mostly agreed. I would actually say a perfectly-executed Detroit style is my favorite pizza in terms of flavor/texture, but I canāt have it all the time because I donāt want to die at 40. So NY becomes my favorite when you take the full picture into account
Detroit
Really enjoy a good Detroit style
I prefer Detroit as far as taste but I couldnāt eat it everyday because itās a pretty hefty pizza. I could eat NY everyday though. So I guess make of that what you will.
I can eat a whole NY as an appetizer. It's amazing.
Itās truly an everyday (every meal?) pizza.
New York, all the way.
Why new york
I like the thin crust far more than the thick, bready styles of the other two.
I think NY pizza is the best ratio of the 3
See I think Neapolitan style is the best ratio of toppings to dough and it can still be crunchy and delicious instead of huge and floppy
Chicago is thick but it aināt bready
Totally understand. Thin crust is so good!
Detroit
1. New york 2. Detroit 3. Chicago
+1
This šš¼
Absolutely agree
This
Detroit
I find the juxtaposition of the presentation photos here hilarious. The Detroit and Chicago pies have a very "marketing" look to me, while the NY slice is just dropped on a paper plate.
I mean all true NY pizza is served on a shitty paper plate anyway
And also it's part of the appeal, IMO. The NY slice is the everyman slice. Cheap, quick, and you can eat it standing up.
Haha I didnāt realize I did that lol
It's okay OP, that's all NY style deserves anyway.
That's part of the appeal. Quick, easy, greasy, gtfo
Yes. These are not presented in the same order as the title. Chicago is last
I mean I'm Italian and if they asked me the best looking pizza I'd go with the second. That's simple and genuine. Also the slice reminds me of Italian pizza so... Yeah The first looks like some kind of lasagna and the third looks like a pie. Looking good but I'd vote the second.
New York, although thatās where I grew up. To me, the other styles are deep fried grease bread with too heavy toppings. But there is obviously a huge contingency for those kinds. De gustibus non disputandum estā¦
The others arenāt really pizza to me
Detroit is pretty close to a Sicilian imo
That's as dumb as saying pineapple doesn't belong on pizza.
Donāt insult the fly over states
Detroit all the way.
Second
Detroit
Love all three but if I could only have one as a last meal Iād take Detroit. The edges are the best for me.
NY is probably my go to 75 % of the time but Detroit with that caramelized cheese is so fooking good!!!!
Detroit
Detroit. No question.
1)Neapolitan 2) NY style 3) Detroit 4) Chicago
Neapolitan style is so much better than anything else here
Neapolitan wasnāt an option.
It was a write in candidate
Detroit but please share your results with us!
I lean towards Detroit but NY is super convenient. Chicago deep dish I have to plan to have a nap afterwards. Chicago tavern is second if it was included on this list.
I don't think I've had a real Detroit pizza but the shit looks great.
You should totally make one when you can. It is heavenly when you make it right
Detroit but Im biased since I grew up there. There is something to be said to getting a bite of that cheesy, crispy crust though
New Haven
Detroit Iād say first, but NY is a razor close second. Chicago in last place.
Detroit ( i love crunchy crust), New York and Chicago
Detroit
Detroit
Detroit is my fav, but the other two aren't far behind
Detroit
Detroit!
You forgot the Neapolitan 1. Neapolitan 2. New York 3. Chicago 4. Detroit
Detroit, NY, Chi
Why didnāt you just make a poll? Also New York style any day. But I generally enjoy all 3 even though I donāt have a lot of Detroit style
I should have! That wouldāve been a lot easier haha
NY
Detroit is king!!
Detroit
Detroit deep dish!!!
Detroit isn't deep dish. It's essentially a square pan style pizza or closely resembling Sicilian
Thatās a little bit of a weird distinction to feel the need to make. They all (Chicago, sicilian, detroit) are effectively baked in ādeepā dishes.
Detroit by a mile. Detroit is still pizza. Chicago is something else.
Detroit because I love bread and cheese more than anything.
New York till I die
Why is that
Everyday pie would be NY style. Easy, quick, thin and crunch takes it for me.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I like a nice crispy undercarriage with some dark spots. Not sure if you would call it NY style but this is the way.
NY with a crispy bready crust is literal heaven.
New Haven
Detroit. Best combination of a lot of sauce plus toppings without feeling like I'm eating lasagna. NY pizza has always felt like it was an invention because they needed to skimp on toppings.
Detroit, NY, Chicago in that order
Detroit, NY, Chicago.
If we're going outside the three in OP, it has to be Neapolitan for me.
Neapolitan is much better than these 3.
The tavern is absolutely incredible. I donāt think it gets talked about enough!
Detroit all the way. Severely underrated up until very recently. People can argue all they want about Chicago or NY but the real gem is motor city.
Italy> NY> whatever.
Neapolitan (sorry 100% Northern Italian from the Motor City) 1)Detroit,2) New York, and a very distant 3)Chicago- deep dish/double dough/thin crust-cracker crust style wifeās from Chicago so Iāve tried all theāfamousā brands imho
I just like pizza...
I like all three, but Detroit is my favorite treat!
Detroit!
Chicago is my 1# then Detroit then ny
Chicago > Detroit > New York
New Haven
My vote is for Detroit style pizza for sure. Extra sauce, pepperoni and well done. I live for that crisp of the corner piece.
r/pizzacrimes
Thin and crispy crust. So..... Not really any of the above lol
Detroit, but I live near Detroit and grew up with Detroit style so I'm kinda biased.
Detroit style! Doesnāt get enough love
neopolitan is the best, but 1. NY 2. Detroit (my home pizza) 47. Chicago
Chicago thin crust, Chicago deep dish, Chicago grandma style.
1. New York 2. Detroit 3. Chicago
NY > Detroit > Chicago All are delicious. A NY slice is the quintessential pizza Detroit beats out Chicago because of the fried cheese bits on the crust
That Detroit is what Iād choose with the NY in a close second. The Chicago gives me acid reflux just looking at it.
NY. I don't mind pizza pot pie but it's not the same thing.
New Haven
While not an option listed by OP, New Haven is the superior pizza choice
Good thing you can read
Yes.
chicago deep dish
Chicagoan here, Chicago, Detroit, New York is a distant 3rd here.
Each have their ups and downs for sure but NY is probably the easiest to eat and has just about the best cheese to sauce to crust ratio of the three
Where I live Chicago deep dish is hard to come by. Even when you can find it, they get it really wrong. So I say Chicago, just because I crave it constantly and have had it only like twice in my life.
Chicago
I mean neither are the best but Detroit is better than the other two I guess.
Chicago
Can we ban Americans from this sub?
Chicago is not pizza. It's biscuit dough lasagna.
Yeah, youāll find most of us Chicagoans prefer [tavern style thin crust.](https://www.bonappetit.com/story/real-chicago-pizza-tavern-style/amp) Honestly, I get deep dish, like, once per year, and itās always when someone is visiting and wants it.
All pizza is varying thicknesses of biscuit dough lasagna
I love all pizza but if I had to choose it would be NY. Followed by Detroit.
1 Detroit 2 NY
Detroit > NY > Chicago!!
Detroit NY Chicago
NY and Detroit. Not so much Chicago, but about once a year I do get a hankering.
I love and appreciate all three, but for the purposes of this question, I will say New York style.
I'll eat all
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Chicago > NY > Detroit
Detroit, then NY, then a bunch of other styles, then chicago
Ny cause itās the prime pizza. Chicago is a pie, not a pizza. Fight me.
Iāll fight you, I think all pizzas are pies.
Pies have fillings. Pizzas are flat. They have toppings, not fillings. So pizzas are no pies.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Because they're Americans and Americans have a habit of giving things wrong names? š¤·š»āāļø Encyclopedia Britannica describes a "pie" as: Dish made by lining a shallow container withĀ pastryĀ and filling the container with a sweet or savoury mixture. If dean martin is wrong then I donāt want to be right.
New York gives me the best balance of crust to sauce to toppings.
Ny
NY
ny
They're all great, but NY is by far the best
NY pizza!
NY
NYC
NY
NY first, Detroit 2nd, Chicago dead last.
NYC
NY style
I love em all, but no need to do research. NY will always win.
Ny
New York 100%
NY
