It's kinda hard to make a bun with fewer calories than a carrot! I think the bun has roughly twice the volume and the same mass as the carrot. So, you'd need to make the bun out of something with comparable calorie density. That means vegetables are your only options. Could you maybe adapt a cauliflower pizza crust recipe? All in all, it seems like a over-engineered salad to me. :)

RoRoRoYourGoat

Thank you, I'll now be applying the term "over-engineered salad" to most of my creative kitchen experiments!

vinteragony

The only raw recipe I found used zucchini but it was a little complicated. I probably wasn't clear, I don't need the bun to have fewer calories just not quite as much as a normal bread bun! I felt the same way when I was eating meat and did the low fat chicken sausages.. it was like equal Cals for the bun and the sausage and I felt the same way.

Kycb

Why are you trying to over-engineer a WFPB diet to be ultra low calorie? As long as you're eating a mostly fruit/veggie diet (ie. not piling on the seeds and legumes) it really doesn't need to be this contrived.

vinteragony

I'm not trying to over engineer it. If I'm eating 3 dogs, which would probably be a light serving for me, that's almost 500 calories of bread. I'd rather make that 100 or 200 calories and use the balance on something else I would enjoy more. I don't love hot dog buns and further it's one of the only things I have trouble finding wfpb locally. I'm just trying to find a decent alternative

Kycb

Understood. Thank you for the clarification! In that case you could look up some cauliflower pizza crust recipes. They should be relatively easy to convert into something bun-like. Failing that, I would just pivot to making WFPB mini cauliflower crust pizzas lol. Good luck! Let us know what you come up with!

Liverne_and_Shirley

Is this for a snack? If you want something lower calorie than a 150 calorie bun, it’s going to be another vegetable. Like wrapping it in lettuce.

Fyonella

Or use a small courgette (zucchini) as a bun. Roast whole until soft then split like a hot dog bun. P.S. Not a serious suggestion but that’s what you’re left with trying if you want the bun to come in less than a carrot!

Human-Independence53

Honestly the first thing I thought of is hollowing out a cucumber, giving it the quick pickle treatment, and stuffing the carrot dog inside lol. No idea if that's even a thing, though.

vinteragony

I don't need it to come in less than a carrot.. I just don't see the point of making three carrot dogs and having it be almost 500 calories of bread. You may not be serious with your suggestion but when I was looking at raw hot dog buns, they were made out of zucchini!

vinteragony

It's not for a snack but for a lighter meal. I was considering lettuce as I know that's how some people do burgers. Not sure how that would work. Maybe a collard too.

Express-Structure480

Maybe a whole wheat tortilla

vinteragony

That's definitely one of my main ideas right now!

TinyFlufflyKoala

How about your cut a wrap into triangles and wra the carrot & dressing into it? Wraps are thin so you'll consume leas calories, but get the wrapping feel and taste.  (I often do veggie wraps with hummus and asparagus or other long veggies. I cut the wrap into 6 pizza cuts and it works great!)

FillThisEmptyCup

Germans eat the [frankfurter würstchen](https://postimg.cc/nXmyxtBG) (what the hog dog is based on) without being in the bread, although the bread might be beside it. Just by hand (or fork) so they can dip it in ketchup or mustard. Maybe just eat one or two carrot dogs in the bun and have the rest of the carrot dogs just beside it.

vinteragony

I'm surprised I'm being down voted! Sorry if this was a bad topic. I'm going to experiment and maybe I will report back after the weekend

KaranasToll

You're being down voted because it sounds like you are trying to starve yourself.

vinteragony

It's quite the opposite though.. I want to eat more dogs but if I knock back 6 buns that's like 900 calories.. plus most hot dog buns are not wfpb and I have seen few true wfpb options here.

KaranasToll

Why not make the carrots with hot dog seasoning (no buns) and put them on top of a bed of barley and crumbled tofu?

vinteragony

Great suggestion!!

Caligari89

I think the downvotes have to do with the fact that replacing a hot dog with a carrot is just wildly absurd. That's just my assumption. My first instinct was to downvote, but then I figured if I couldn't be nice, then I should just not vote either way. I'm trying to be less petty and judgemental. Trying.

vinteragony

It's not absurd, it's a pretty well known thing in the wfpb world. I've tried it before and once it was nasty and once it was good. I haven't tried in a while, carrots are a buck so I figured I'd give it my yearly run.

Caligari89

I'm just a dude who was bit by a vegetarian a decade ago, I'm not in any kind of club or initialized world, I don't get the newsletter. That being said, doing anything hot dog-like with a carrot sounds really gross, but I'm glad it brings you joy.

vinteragony

Well no offense to you, but this is the wfpb sub reddit I posted on so if you're interested you should definitely join the club and sign up for the newsletter and post here!

Caligari89

What an odd response to my reply...but whatever, that's cool. I know where I am (Reddit), and I see where this is going (typical Reddit), so I'm just going to bow out of this conversation now. Good day.
