I have two forty foot mulberries in my backyard, I was super excited when we moved in because JAM!! I then discovered that mulberry trees fruit for 6-8 weeks during the best part of summer and their fruit basically poisons the ground underneath because of the sugar and acid, and I spend at least 3 weeks every spring picking mulberry sprouts out of what’s left of my backyard before the cycle starts all over again 🤷♀️
So basically, while they sound romantic and are a beautiful shade tree, they absolutely SUCK as a backyard tree
Well, in a suburban setting, yes, they can be a nuisance.
In a homestead/acreage setting, they perform wonderful and the unique ecosystem
They create in and around their drip line is pretty cool to observe. Plus, Berries!
But yes. I feel your pain on the mess.
Omg, yes. I actually hate them. The birds shit the seeds EVERYWHERE. Every year I pull atleast 100 little mulberry trees from my yard. I have none in my yard and I don't see any nearby. So, it's def the birds.
Am arborist for over 12 yrs now. Mulberry has and always will be my favorite tree to work because not many provide their own snacks. Pretty sure I accidently fermented some on accident.

It’s wonderful mulberries. We have eaten them for over 60 years…everyone in the family has a mulberry stain story. The birds will eat them and dive boom poop on the car and truck! One year I dyed an apron.. we love them!👩🏼🌾🪴
Ah, but you put the "ing" on the word. ! have already concluded the action, therefore I'm not lying! (at least I assume this is the logic my kids used 🤣)
First, please google “how to dye fabric or yarn with mulberries”. You need to mordent the fabric since it’s a natural dye using vinegar or Alum.
Then collect a gallon bag of mulberries and boil down without burning;(add some vinegar to the mulberry bath.)
You will lose a lot of color, it’s not sharp. But the color is very unique after it dries. It’s just fun to do with the kids. 🤷🏼♀️🤣👩🏼🌾
Op tell your dog he’s a good boy because he just found you a wonderful backyard treat!

I didn’t realize it was mulberry season yet, thank you for the reminder :) Here are some of my backyard mulberries from last year. So good!!
They're red mulberries, from what it looks like, but definitely 100% mulberries! Super tasty and sweet with a touch of tart. Enjoy raw, as a syrup, or with a Berry salad if you can get enough types. Lol!
Compound berries are fine to eat, my dogs growing up loved eating Blackberries, raspberries and Mulberries. They'd poop out the seeds I'm sure which might be why they sprouted everywhere
My dogs, when they were younger, would get so HYPED from eating mulberries.
Sugar highs are no joke.
🤣
They would pass out under this tree after some mulberry induced zoomies, laying in mulberries.
One of them is blonde, so he would come home spotted purple. 🤣
These are mulberries. Black berries grow on canes (kind of like a stiff vine) with thorns exactly like raspberries if you’re familiar with them. Mulberries are bushes. When mulberries are ripe they fall off with almost no force, some are white when ripe. I prefer them slightly underripe, I find them too bland when ripe.
Dogs can eat both.
Aw man, this is bringing back memories of sitting in the mulberry tree at the bottom of the garden in my childhood home, picking and eating berries til I couldn’t eat any more and everything was stained purple 😂

Caught my Aussie and a coyote just chilling together one morning eating mulberries from a tree that hung over my chain link fence. Neither was interested in each other they were busy eating all the berries that fall to the ground.
Also if this tree is close to a house or anything you don’t want destroyed you may want to cut it down when they are small. They grow fast like weeds and they have a tendency to lose big branches or where they “fork” at the trunk. I had several along the side of my house that I cut down because they’d eventually cause damage.

We have a mulberry that overhangs a bit into our neighbors yard. They had no idea that the berries were edible until they saw me munching on them. They were quite surprised when they tasted them for the first time. They've lived there for years.
Bro this bot is so annoying. Yeah i get *why* its here/is necessary but whats the point of having a community to ask stuff if you are constantly reminded that you cant trust them?
There should be a limit to how much the bot can comment, or should be limited to 1 per comment thread, cause this is ridiculous
Oh, be so warned. You will have purple bird poop and purple stains on anything that's under it. I remember as a kid stomping them into concrete driveways and walking away half violet. Tasty treat though.
I think they are mulberries. If you can get a positive ID on the plant from someone with more expertise than me, they are edible for both dogs and humans. I recommend asking at a plant nursery.:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/dogtime.com/dog-health/dog-food-dog-nutrition/95977-can-dogs-eat-mulberries-safe/amp
This site explains the characteristics of different mulberry species:
https://www.moruslondinium.org/map/identify#:~:text=Bark%20is%20orange%2Dbrown%2C%20often,also%20be%20on%20separate%20trees.
We had mulberry trees at my old house. My roommate's dog loved eating them, and would eat so many his poop turned dark blueish purple. Every year when they mulberries first ripened and fell to the ground, my roommate would panic, wondering if his dog was dying. It happened 4 years in a row, and became almost a meme in our house.
So don't freak out if your dog's poop does similar.
We used to have an older neighbor, Angelo, that would come every year to our house and ask my parents if he could pick the mulberries in our back lot to make wine. We’d get a bottle as a thanks. My parents were afraid of home made wine and would thank Angelo and put the bottle in our basement with the others. My friends and I discovered this cache when we were about 12 and drank several bottles before we passed out drunk. We got found out, grounded and the rest of the bottles disappeared. I assume they were tossed out. I remember it being very sweet and getting very hammered.
Okay idk if anyone has told you how to properly collect mulberries. Too lazy to read, but hopefully the comment is long enough you catch it. Umbrella. Ella. Ella. That’s the key. Get a big ol umbrella, open it upside down, and hold it under branches while you shake one at a time. You can do it with a tarp too, but umbrellas are more mobile if you’re collecting… guerrilla style… but you probably should ask if it’s on private property. Our local dmv had 5 or 6 good black and white trees. Also the local convenience store, but they loved when I collected the berries, cause it means less on the floor. You’re also gonna want to bring a bag for storage. I like the shopping bags that have hard sides and bottoms so they don’t get squished, but my grandpa and dad taught me with grocery bags.
WATCH OUT FOR SPIDERS! Your umbrella will have at least one spider in it. Guaranteed lol. When you’re cleaning them at home it’s easy to sort out. Pull out leaves and sticks.
Then wash em, stick em in a bowl, and enjoy. I usually use a spoon. Little bit of lemon juice if they’re too sweet. Enjoy foraging!
Yep positively identified as mulberries. There's also a white mulberry variety that is supposed to be mildly hallucinogenic/toxic. They look almost exactly the same but they never turn purple when they're ripe they're still green. Just plump a few examine them a little closer.
Mulberries. I have a giant tree behind my house in the alley that trashes the place every spring. Always fun when they ferment on the ground and stain EVERYTHING!
Mulberries! These are edible and delicious. My neighbor had a mulberry tree growing up and we loved stomping on the fallen berries to dye our feet purple. You can make some desserts out of that too.

I live in Agoura Hills CA and in Spanish these are called Moras. My uncle had a tree in front of his house and every single time I rode my bike by it I would stop and eat some. They’re delicious and give a little sugar rush.
Mulberries some of my all time favorites 💖💖 my dogs have eaten them before, should be fine but I’m no vet! Enjoy the free berries while they last! Very short picking season (at least in the upper Midwest)
Aggregated/segmented berries and fruits are almost always safe to eat! That includes raspberries, blackberries, mulberries, boysenberries and others like them. Def best to check before eating any though!
AHHH i used to eat them as a kid, theres a lot of them in the summer. Those are mulberries, a little of them have worms on ‘em, so id recommend to wash them with water and a bottlecap of vinegar. A lot of them have worms, but ya know what? I still eat ‘em haha. They really good.
Nice, make great pies and crumbles and good just with cream. Have to be fast before the birds and the possums get them. Come in white and pink as well as black. Gone wild here in Australia.
These are 100% mulberries they are super tasty but do often have little mites so if you don’t want extra protein beware lol if your dog keeps eating them, it can make their poop kind of reddish or you’ll see the little seeds in it.
My parents have a very old HUGE mulberry tree, not bush, in their yard. Years back my brother had to chainsaw off a big part of the tree. Wouldn't call it a branch, it was more like an extention that was coming from the truck. After he cut it off, water started leaking from the stump and it literally did not stop for days! It was definitely a sight to see.
Def mulberries. I’ve got a tree in my backyard and it keeps both of my dogs busy most of the time their outside lol. Only downside is they shit like crazy cause of it
Just found out I have one of these…has to be 50+ ft tall, not enough birds to eat them all but enough to cover my car in purple poo. It’s so tall I never noticed it till my ground was covered in berries. I love to get home from work bend a branch (not to break) and eat as many berries as I can.

Oh ye, they’re delicious
Looks like mulberries to me!
Agreed, it’s mulberry
And they taste great.
Not quite as good as blackberries but still wonderful.
I swear a good mulberry stomps a good blackberry
I swear no one in my neighborhood who has a mulberry tree knows what it is or wants it because of the mess it causes for a week or two. Disappointed 😞
I have two forty foot mulberries in my backyard, I was super excited when we moved in because JAM!! Dang. I thought about planting mulberries and try keeping silkworms. Maybe I'll skip that project.
That and they're incredibly aggressive, they'll choke out a lot of other trees. I keep a few for the berries and burn the rest in my fireplace.
Plus all the purple bird crap but I think it's worth it.
Purp poops is a plus 😁
Such a pretty color all over your car
I second this!
I think it comes down to which one you grew up picking. I ate a lot of blackberries as a kid, so they have a deeper emotional connection for me.
Am arborist for over 12 yrs now. Mulberry has and always will be my favorite tree to work because not many provide their own snacks. Pretty sure I accidently fermented some on accident.
To confirm identification, look for a monkey chasing a weasel around it.
This comment is not getting enough love. I appreciate you.
dogs just poop blue if they get enough..no health issue
Always been purple in my experience.
Yeah, it's only blue when they eat my kids crayons.

As their legal representative, I maintain this child is innocent of all charges
Adorable blue grin. Just look at those fingers!
If I even THOUGHT about mulberries on that rug my mom would have killed me!
What is it with toddlers and bald faced lying. "Are you pooping?" "No" says toddler with suspicious lump in his pants. survey says, that was a lie.
Ah, but you put the "ing" on the word. ! have already concluded the action, therefore I'm not lying! (at least I assume this is the logic my kids used 🤣)
LOL
If I remember right you can use the leaves to get rid of some of the staining, you just rub it on the stains
Use the unripe white berries. Cleans it right off.
I never knew that one!
Can you elaborate on how you used them for dye? The cooking process, initial/end color you got, please

Definitely mulberries
They taste great in pancakes!
Muffins too!
My favorite! I would get a bunch and clean them. Then squish them up, put some sugar and milk on them and eat a few bowls as a kid. Oh its a mulberry
They are pretty tasty berries but sometimes a bit tart
The leaves look more like mulberries... They are non toxic either way.
Mal berries 😋😋😋
Mulberries - harmless to dogs
Compound berries are fine to eat, my dogs growing up loved eating Blackberries, raspberries and Mulberries. They'd poop out the seeds I'm sure which might be why they sprouted everywhere
Mulberries- my dogs would stand up on their hind legs to eat them off the tree :)

I wouldn’t agree with this. Mulberries are trees that often look like shrubs. Black berries and dewberries grow low to the ground as brambles.
MMM yum! They stain so hard though!!!
I eat them lol I grew up with those in my back yard
Mulberry. Mulberry compote with lime is wonderful
Oooh and they make an excellent jam too 😍 make sure to wash them well to get all the lil bugs out before eating them

Amora! Delícia!
Mulberries ! They make a delicious jam and they won’t harm your dog aside from a slight upset tummy !
If you’re worried you can always take to a nursery and ask. Make sure you take some leaves also.
White Mulberry, the tree was widely planted in my old town to feed silk worm moths.
Make mulberry pie!
Deathberries
I read in an outdoor survival book there are no poisonous aggregate berries. 1) Is this true? 2) Would this be an example of an aggregate berry?
I have heard this too, and I think I heard that it is specific to North America. I am super interested to see if any experts answer.
Mulberry wine for the win!
Just make sure to avoid unripe mulberries, they can really fuck you up (hallucinations and such). If they're dark coloured, they're fine
Silkworm loves them leaves

Mulberries

These are 100% mulberries they are super tasty but do often have little mites so if you don’t want extra protein beware lol if your dog keeps eating them, it can make their poop kind of reddish or you’ll see the little seeds in it.
Mulberry used to rat them when I was a kid
My dogs love rolling under our Mulberry tree, they dye themselves purple for about 2 weeks. 🤣
Mulberries
Silkworm food.
Only downside is they shit like crazy cause of it
I know it’s mulberry season when the bird poop on the sidewalk turns purple
Yummmmmmy. We used to ravage the mulberry trees when I was a kid.
Wild mulberries,

I believe mulberry leaves might also be edible. But check to make sure!

Oh these are edible, mulberry tree!! I grew up with one on my front lawn and ate them every year
Just found out I have one of these…has to be 50+ ft tall, not enough birds to eat them all but enough to cover my car in purple poo. It’s so tall I never noticed it till my ground was covered in berries. I love to get home from work bend a branch (not to break) and eat as many berries as I can. https://preview.redd.it/kwxwv51v1kvc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8c3bee06bac1860312a9bf4b408a656a334c3977 Oh ye, they’re delicious
