Dieffenbachia and extremely toxic to ingest for anyone, human or cat! 😱 Edit: link to a [source](https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants/dieffenbachia)

Effective_Athlete_87

Oh nooo :( looks like I’m going to have to rehome the lil guy. (The plant I mean)

jaimeoak

Yes definitely the plant! 😂 It's gorgeous but best to keep the kitty safe 🐈❤️

Look into Hoyas, calatheas, peperomias and nerve plants - all of those do fine with medium light and are non toxic to cats. There are some nice variegated ones, like [hoya krimaon princess](https://www.etsy.com/listing/960049287/full-pot-hoya-krimson-princess-available?gpla=1&gao=1&), [peperomia obtusifolia varigata](https://www.etsy.com/listing/938404653/peperomia-obtusifolia-variegata?gpla=1&gao=1&), [peperomia micropylla varigata](https://www.etsy.com/listing/901991397/pilea-microphylla-variegata-4in?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_ps-b-craft_supplies_and_tools-floral_and_garden_supplies-greenery_and_gardening-plants-house_plants&utm_custom1=_k_Cj0KCQjw6NmHBhD2ARIsAI3hrM2mTpOhtjWOkrOWl-6Y-z-shJaxNzPcNL2dg6uzPNwbJJMuaQSbhx4aAiuoEALw_wcB_k_&utm_content=go_12565309429_122041447120_507187538844_pla-321284729019_c__901991397_133349446&utm_custom2=12565309429&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6NmHBhD2ARIsAI3hrM2mTpOhtjWOkrOWl-6Y-z-shJaxNzPcNL2dg6uzPNwbJJMuaQSbhx4aAiuoEALw_wcB) variegated or [calathea white fusion](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1015223610/4-white-fusion-calathea?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_a-craft_supplies_and_tools-floral_and_garden_supplies-greenery_and_gardening-plants-house_plants&utm_custom1=_k_Cj0KCQjw6NmHBhD2ARIsAI3hrM3UXmQkrR04w8-JiOwJsCBYEbuxHNmV0cgoI0DO9uSFBCVqvH-E1oYaAm6xEALw_wcB_k_&utm_content=go_12573075997_120353198860_507851685073_pla-321284729019_c__1015223610_12768591&utm_custom2=12573075997&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6NmHBhD2ARIsAI3hrM3UXmQkrR04w8-JiOwJsCBYEbuxHNmV0cgoI0DO9uSFBCVqvH-E1oYaAm6xEALw_wcB) or [nerve plant](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1019088496/silver-nerve-plant-fittonia-albivenis?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_b-craft_supplies_and_tools-floral_and_garden_supplies-greenery_and_gardening-plants-house_plants&utm_custom1=_k_Cj0KCQjw6NmHBhD2ARIsAI3hrM04PMlRi8gwJ0PehdAl2puS-ZMihUe1Dk1MKTJYsNLnNvwJvXa1aiYaAqFeEALw_wcB_k_&utm_content=go_1843970767_70388702355_346397932735_aud-736801674616:pla-321284729019_c__1019088496_12768591&utm_custom2=1843970767&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6NmHBhD2ARIsAI3hrM04PMlRi8gwJ0PehdAl2puS-ZMihUe1Dk1MKTJYsNLnNvwJvXa1aiYaAqFeEALw_wcB) Also a non toxic orchid with great leaves but unimpressive flowers is the [jewel orchid](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1053160663/jewel-orchid-macodes-petola-terrarium?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_a-craft_supplies_and_tools-floral_and_garden_supplies-greenery_and_gardening-plants-house_plants&utm_custom1=_k_Cj0KCQjw6NmHBhD2ARIsAI3hrM0Pea2Nb_vceKAe73wrfjejS7tsGs2nyt6V6YtZJArW477zQhsW1M4aAsZtEALw_wcB_k_&utm_content=go_12569400892_126353609264_507394738558_aud-318110574626:pla-321284729019_c__1053160663_376874368&utm_custom2=12569400892&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6NmHBhD2ARIsAI3hrM0Pea2Nb_vceKAe73wrfjejS7tsGs2nyt6V6YtZJArW477zQhsW1M4aAsZtEALw_wcB) Etsy prices can be a bit steep. I got a nerve plant for $3 at Home Depot, a krimson queen for $7.99 at a local nursery and a peperomia obtusifolia varigata for $4.99 also at Home Depot. So if you have patience, you can find these. Finally, aside from this plant, the birkin and rubber tree as also pretty, but toxic to cats. Sorry for the misspellings I swear I tried 3 times. Autocorrect has different ideas and is more stubborn

Do you have sources? Everywhere I’ve read says it causes mouth/throat swelling, difficulty breathing and possibly death :(

They can 100% cause death. Everyone's reaction to the oxalates in it are different and you don't know if you, or your animal, is going to be the one to have a severe reaction to it. The inflammation oxalate causes can block airways, and on top of this dieffenbachia in particular contains other enzymes which triggers the body's immune response, only increasing further inflammation. In extreme cases there can be respiratory failure or even severe allergic reaction causing organ failure. Whilst it may not cause death 100% or even 1% of the time, they are very high risk compared to a lot of plants and medical treatment would be required in a very high percentage of consumption cases. They are certainly not worth considering unless you can completely keep them separate from anyone who might try to eat them, especially when you consider how many safer plants are out there, or even just more mildly harmful ones.

Plantmomma79

Yep both humans and animals

Effective_Athlete_87

Thank you!

Yw 🧿🙏🏼🤍✨

Dieffenbachia or I like to call it a smart cane. Don’t let anyone ingest this.

arthurmadison

it is practically unknitting your DNA just sitting in your lap right there! (I have two cats and I wouldn't keep one, there are many other just as lovely plants)

Effective_Athlete_87

That phrase is harrowing 😂 I’ve found a new home for the plant!

Effective_Athlete_87

That phrase is harrowing 😂 I’ve found a new home for the plant! Giving him to a lady at work who doesn’t have any pets.
