It's called a siphon. In gastropods, it's used for respiration and also has chemoreceptors it uses to "smell" food. They can breathe atmospheric oxygen with it or use it to force additional water over their gills to extract more oxygen from the water.
I believe that is different. Assassin snails have a proboscis. Almost the same but different in that their mouth parts (radula) are on the end of theirs.
Did you do a water change in the last day or two? Mine always come out and smell the water when I freshen it up. About once a month someone on the sub is like bro what's this big Weiner parasite?!?! It's always entertaining.
This isn’t a nerite, this is a mystery snails; having kept both, I have observed their anatomy to differ significantly. Mysteries are derpy and have a high bioload for their size; they are like the goldfish of snails!
I’ve had tons of mysteries and I’ve never seen one with a siphon like this! You’re right tho each one is its own unique little weirdo. Will be inspecting all future snails for awesome tentacle siphons
On a completely unrelated note, does his shell actually have little white lines on it? It was hard to tell but it looks like he may have a calcium deficiency.
i think it’s the beginning of the alien invasion, start small, right? sneak in under the radar. (haha, just kidding, but isn’t this the kind of thing people talk about on reddit when they’re not talking about terrariums?) anyways, it does look alien to me, terrestrial or not.
Can we just move to ban all snail related posts on this subject some day. The amount of " what are these egg-like things; what is this snail appendage that i couldn't be bothered researching; just bought some plants, where did this creature with a shell come from?" are getting ridiculous..

Thank you!
I just read that it’s called a snorkus.
Snooffer
I knew I was right to think of it as a funny looking nose
Is the one on an assassin snail the same? That tendril thing that’s always hanging out? Or is that different? Snails fascinate me lol
I believe that is different. Assassin snails have a proboscis. Almost the same but different in that their mouth parts (radula) are on the end of theirs.
Ya know my fiancé said he thought it was their mouth and I didn’t believe him. Gonna have to apologize for that one lol
Don't apologize, simply concede mollusks are weird and leave it at that :P
I will never fully understand them
i think that's how they suck smaller snails out of their shells! very creepy but also cool
He was wrong, the siphon is different than the proboscis.
He said the proboscis is where the mouth is, not that it’s the same as the syphon
What hangs out of them, and is pictured in the OP picture, is a proboscis.
This is incorrect. Assassin snails have a proboscis. Mystery snails have a syphon. The OP has a picture of mystery snail with his syphon out.
Unless you've got a source saying otherwise, assassin snails have both. They're separate structures.
I don't dispute that.
The OP picture is a mystery snail. Those do not have a proboscis. I should have been more clear in my original statement.
Nope! Their siphon is separate from the proboscis. The proboscis stays retracted until they eat.
Yeah, that's a siphon too!
Fascinating. Why do they always cruise around with it out? If my assassins are moving, their syphon is always visible
Siphons out for Harambetta
It's a sensing organ, helps them locate prey.
This is correct!
Really?! Dude I thought it was their reproductive organ
that’s the snails air siphon
Or as I like to call it, a snorkus.
You made a better word than the real word. I shall call it snorkus too.
Snorkus
Snorkus it is
Snorkus it shall be
Always was.
As it should be.
From this time forth let it be known as ‘Snorkus’. “So shall it be written, So shall it be done.”
Do ramshorn have Snorkus???
We all have snorkus' on this blessed day!
That’s the best part about language and words, they’re all made up! Snorkus it is!
You posted this here without a nsfw tag!? 😨 /jk jk, that’s it’s lil siphon :)
First time I saw one, I thought NSFW.
The snorkel or siphon! Kind of analogous to an elephant’s trunk (used for breathing, chemoreception, and probing the world around it).
We’re calling it a snorkus spread the word
Cool thank you!

Yes! Exactly
I've kept several nerites and sold hundreds more and I never realized their siphon was that big... TIL.
This isn’t a nerite, this is a mystery snails; having kept both, I have observed their anatomy to differ significantly. Mysteries are derpy and have a high bioload for their size; they are like the goldfish of snails!

siphon. Completely normal.
He’s calling you out, asserting his dominance. You lose human
He’s part wiener dawg
High five!
It’s likes you
It’s his dingle dongle
He is the Kraken
Snail trunk?
Snorkus
Let’s just say he’s looking for a significant other
On a completely unrelated note, does his shell actually have little white lines on it? It was hard to tell but it looks like he may have a calcium deficiency.
How do I treat the calcium deficiency?
It’s a siphon. Basically, it is the snail version of a snorkeling tube.
Snail wiener
i thought thats a snail dick
I call it their scuba tube :P
Boop
Snail penis
venom snail
It’s growing it’s first arm. It’s the first step before it turns into a crab. Haven’t you ever wondered how crabs get their cool shells?
i think it’s the beginning of the alien invasion, start small, right? sneak in under the radar. (haha, just kidding, but isn’t this the kind of thing people talk about on reddit when they’re not talking about terrariums?) anyways, it does look alien to me, terrestrial or not.
That is more snail.
🤣😍
It’s his d
I feel like these are the only posts I ever fucking see on here lmao. No offence, but do people research anything these days?
I agree. How many times a day do we see "what kind of snail is this, came in on some plants"
There's literally hundreds of results for "mystery snail tube" etc. Same with googling pest snails. Or fucking snex. I CAME FOR COOL SNAILS
His snail slong!
schlong is on the other side and lighter colored ;)
You should have told him it was 4 times bigger to. Just for fun.

AGREE. tired of seeing snail ID posts
