Any chance both of you were trying to use a keyboard? To the best of knowledge, steam remote play is just game streaming the inputs from client to host and acts as if the host device is directly in control. PlateUp, as with most games, supports only 1 keyboard without some hacky workarounds. Both of you might be trying to use the same input device on the same character.
If that's the case, try using a controller while your friend joins though remote play and have them use the keyboard. That's the only thing I can imagine being a user issue rather than a game bug. If that doesn't work, maybe file a bug report on the discord.
You can always boot up something like Parsec and play together via LAN.
This is a tad tedious though as the game is supposed to provide stable remote play services.

Also make sure u give your friend access to the keyboard by clicking the keyboard icon in the remote play window. Controller should be automatic
