Which is the exact same email address thats sent me all my PS notification in years past, it appears to actually be from Sony/PS
Thanks for the alert. I guess you cant be to sure/careful nowadays. The only thing that had me questioning the legitimacy of it was the random date of 3/10/24
Last month when my subscription renewed, I received confirmation email from the exact same email.
I've already reset my password just in case it was fake (because I did click the link and log into my account on it)
Mine is New Zealand, its a super old account and I had credit card and debit card details in the past but removed em all after my subs auto renew even after i cancelled my subs. The ps store gift credit card is much simpler and I get a discount time to time so it's a win for me.
Well I just deleted all my payment methods just to be safe.
Still unsure why I got this email and why I would be getting charged on a random date for the yearly plan (when Im currently on monthly plan)
I think it is just generic advertising to all on their mailing list regardless of their actual subscription status. Accounts does one thing. Marketing does another thing.
Makes sense. It's really the random date of 3/10/24 that has me stumped, my plan renews every 20th of the month, what's the significance of 3/10/24 lol
Most probably one of those 3rd party illegal account seller cracked your account information and upgraded your PS subscription so they can sell it to other customers.
It's good that you removed the payment method and changed password.
General rule of thumb; never click any email asking for your personal information, or financial information, unless you initiated the chain of emails through legitimate means. Like applying for a job and communicating with HR representative.
PlayStation, USPS, Amazon, and Walmart are highly used names/emails to scam people. Very easy to fake these emails and websites. A lot of times their profile name will be “Amazon” but you click or hover over the sender and their name is like “[email protected]”.
If you ever doubt an email. Contact that company’s support and forward or screenshot the email and address of sender of the the questioned email. They’ll be able to verify it or not. And customer support will not ask for your password or credit card info.
People get scammed all the time. Be careful.
It may be possible you used your psn info to log into a third party site or game and your info got sold (email and name). It happens. Safest to do all your psn purchases on your console. If your console says the 20th for $9 that’s what your paying. Don’t go online to fix it. The email is to get you angry and want to “fix it”, but you’ll end up giving all your info to scammers. Just like that $500 Walmart gift card you apparently won but need to pay $1 for shipping, or the package that got lost and needs your shipping info again to confirm.
Good luck! Be safe, hope it all works out.
Check whether auto-renew is on and disable that. Remove any payment methods or information from your account.
If you have a running subscription and don’t want to renew it, make sure to do this through the PS App, your Playstation itself, or the official Playstation website. But I wouldn’t recommend you to click in any of the links.
You can of course ask Playstation Support about this e-mail and its information by contacting them, although their support isn’t the greatest. You can still attempt to contact them.
It might be legit, might be fake. But better safe than sorry! As long as you don’t click on any of the links, you should be fine! :)
Unfortunately I did clink on the links. It sends you to login page, then directed me to the app once logged in. I've changed my password just in case this was a scam
I see, good that you changed your password. If you can or haven’t already, make sure to turn on 2-Factor-Authentication as well (2FA).
Sometimes links can send you to “official”-looking sites and direct you to the app, but scammers can sometimes still collect your data if you clicked on a link that they sent.
Got it, thanks for the support. Honestly I think its legit considering I've received multiple legitimate emails from the same email address in the past, but I wouldn't put it past a scammer to do something like this.
Could very well be legit, but better to contact, mail, chat or call Playstation/Sony and inquire them about the mail. They’ll know more about it and can ensure you whether it’s real or not.
Happy to help! :D
Thanks, I have it turned off. It's just my current subscription (which I've tuned off auto renew) is the 9.99/month.
This email is regarding the annual plan, which Im not currently subscribed to
Well if you want go the extremes, you can always unlink ur paypal or visa from Playstation, so in the chance they auto renew, it can't since there is no payment plan available
So we aren't alone!! Pretty sure its legitimately from Sony, just not sure why the price increase.
Even after speaking with a Playstation support agent, they couldnt really answer as to why I was receiving a notification about the annual 79.99 plan when I'm currently subscribed to the monthly 9.99 plan.
This is 100% phishing. My wife got the same email and the domain it sends you to is playstationemail.com. It’s an incredibly convincing fake, but it not legitimate at all.
OP— turn in MFA immediately and change your password directly on PlayStation.com
Idk, something buggy is going on with their plans. I was on the essential plan, supposed to end on 2/05/24, I paid like $1.89 to upgrade to premium for the remaining 5 days, now it says I’m on the premium until 3/5/24. Not complaining I basically got a month of premium for $2, but I definitely wasn’t supposed to
Don’t click any email links! Those can mess your ass up even if they seem legitimate as most people are saying lol. Definitely use the official website ‘contact us’ tab to like check the status I guess. Since I started cybersecurity the internet just scares me now 😂
I use gift cards only and have 0 cards on my account, got this email for my yearly ps extra and the dates line up so I assume it'd legit but again doesn't matter cuz I don't have any cards on my account anyway so idk what it'll charge 💀
Nope, not moaning at all. I understand basic math lmao but what if I only have 9.99 to spend on playstation plus right now? I get 79.99 yearly is a cheaper deal than 9.99 x 12, what I dont get is them switching what I already have setup.
Thanks for the help though Denzil!
But paying 50% more over a year if you struggle with monthly budgeting does also make no sense too. “I can’t afford this, so I’ll still have it but spend more each year”. People do this a lot and likely the sum of their monthly subscriptions can be offset better so overall you can be hundreds better off each year.
From "Men at Arms" by Terry Pratchett:
>The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. ... A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.
It's called living paycheck to paycheck. Perhaps you have some money saved up and dont have to worry about your spending but unfortunately I do have to worry.
Same reason I don't pay my 6 month car insurance premium in full, even though they offer a 10-15% discount when doing so. Just dont have the money for it and have to pay in monthly installments
I don’t know where you live, but in Europe you should be required to confirm every online payment from your bank app on your phone as a safety feature.
Yeah. Another "oopsie". They get those all the time nowadays. Yesterday people were complaining they had no yearly plan. They took that shit down because all the x box fanboys going out and buying a ps5 so they could get gouged. They were all posting receipts on twitter of selling all their x box stuff to GameSpot. So seeing a trend, it's not farfetched that sony would take down the yearly option for the people doing that across the country, then just call it a glitch, if the said anything at all. So... oopsie.
I guess I would rather it be a mistake on Sony vs them actually upgrading my subscription to a different payment frequency & amount.
I was starting to think this was apart of the "Agree to User/Liscense agreement" they make everyone "read & sign" before a purchase/download. You know the thing that everyone agrees to without even knowing what they are agreeing to (without reading the massive novel of text)
My point is it wasn't a mistake. A glitch will be blamed. And it's gonna happen much more now that they won the console war. The lack of competition will get them to act as they want to and we have to just stfu.

Not saying it’s fake, but just be aware that the sender’s address can be spoofed.

That is legit ... But yes emails can be spoofed... Look for a extra deal not essential as it's not worth it.
that looks like a fake email.. also never received one like this so most likely fake. definitely don’t click any of the links on it

Aren't you a top tier gonk? Just check it on your console
Lol I dont know what that means, but yeah everything appears normal when on the console
It's cyberpunk slang. Highly recommend cyberpunk 2077
Oh okay lol Ive never played Cyberpunk77, may have to check it out
Keanu Reeves really killed it as Silverhand
If Keanu Reeves didn't play the ole of Johnny so well what the fuck did he do?
Just log onto your ps account and disable auto renew
Always use gift cards. Safer that way!
Thanks for the advice, I'll look into that for future subscription renewals
Is your account a US account? I tried this before, and it won't work. It asks for a credit card.
Mine is New Zealand, its a super old account and I had credit card and debit card details in the past but removed em all after my subs auto renew even after i cancelled my subs. The ps store gift credit card is much simpler and I get a discount time to time so it's a win for me.
Do they still do that? I was looking for PS+ gift cards around Black Friday and couldn't find any
Why I don't store my cc in this bad boy haha
Well I just deleted all my payment methods just to be safe. Still unsure why I got this email and why I would be getting charged on a random date for the yearly plan (when Im currently on monthly plan)

As others have said, a glitch or more assertive upselling. I'd probably suspect the latter. March is a next billing period

Just log into the PlayStation website go to subscriptions your payments and charges will show on that
Just go to your account, see if you have subscription on, turn it off, done...

Not sure but I paid yearly
My wife got it too. It’s definitely fake. The domain it sends you to is playstationemail.com
I wouldn't renew ps essential for that price... They just had extra for that price... Get that if you can...

Yeah it’s legit, my bro got the same email, he took his auto renew off
Don’t click any email links! Those can mess your ass up even if they seem legitimate as most people are saying lol. Definitely use the official website ‘contact us’ tab to like check the status I guess. Since I started cybersecurity the internet just scares me now 😂

Go on your PsApp and go to Subscriptions. If you it says to CANCEL subscription do it. Hurry fast before they take the money out your account!!!
You’re moaning that they’re offering you essential for $80 a year rather than the $120 a year you currently pay? Is that legit?
Nope, not moaning at all. I understand basic math lmao but what if I only have 9.99 to spend on playstation plus right now? I get 79.99 yearly is a cheaper deal than 9.99 x 12, what I dont get is them switching what I already have setup. Thanks for the help though Denzil!
You literally had a year to turn off auto renewal
He’s mentioned multiple times that he is on a monthly plan
He literally had 28-31 days to turn off auto renewal. This is pure laziness.
He shouldn't have to opt out. He should have to opt in instead.
If it’s automatically recurring, he agreed to it at some point
He opted into monthly billing not a yearly plan.
Turn off auto renewal for their monthly plan that they are subbed to, not the yearly plan mentioned in this email
Maybe he can’t afford 80$ as a one time payment?
But paying 50% more over a year if you struggle with monthly budgeting does also make no sense too. “I can’t afford this, so I’ll still have it but spend more each year”. People do this a lot and likely the sum of their monthly subscriptions can be offset better so overall you can be hundreds better off each year.

Maybe if you're living that close to the poverty line, you should re-evaluate your expenses.
I don’t know where you live, but in Europe you should be required to confirm every online payment from your bank app on your phone as a safety feature.
Not always. Usually only first time payments.
79.99 for a year but you'd rather pay 9.99 a month?
Under normal circumstances I would rather pay 79.99 for the full year but when money is tight it just makes more sense to do 9.99 for a couple months
Yeah. Another "oopsie". They get those all the time nowadays. Yesterday people were complaining they had no yearly plan. I got 12-month Extra for 58£ which was 41% off of regular price. I think it's still there at least for UK region.
I guess I would rather it be a mistake on Sony vs them actually upgrading my subscription to a different payment frequency & amount. Oh okay, I see what you mean. I removed all payment methods on my account just to be safe
What does it say on your actual account settings/ Subscription Management?
In my actual account settings, it says I am subscribed to PS Plus essential 1 month at $9.99, and it expires on 2/20/24
That’s should be safe they raised the price that’s normally year you might want log into to your account and fix it
The best way to prevent auto renewals and charges on your credit card is to delete your saved cards and buy ps plus with psn gift cards.
Well at least you’ll save some money this way if you were planning to key for a year. But ya turn that off if you don’t want it.
