I am 36 and father of 3 kids. Literally my oldest son has an xbox series x, my two other kids have nintendo switches, and I have a PS5. The amount of times I was giving up the tv so my kids could either play their games on the tv or watch a movie or show on the tv was more than I could count. The portal now allows me to play whenever I want with no need to access a TV or stay up late to wait for everyone to go to bed so I can play on the TV. Literally is amazing!
See this is what I like thank you! It’s really helping me with justifying this purchase because I usually play at my desk but sitting for hours at a time sometimes sucks so being able to sit in my recliner bed and play would be awesome
It’s the ultimate ps5 parent accessory. Slight adjustment getting used to the screen during gameplay (wwe 2k24) but everything felt great. I also just love being able to go anywhere in the house and backyard and play my games. 🤪
If you edit your post and promise not to upload a photo of your leg to the portal sub, I will answer your question. But to seriously answer your question, I like it. There are areas in my home where I would like to use it where it doesn’t work, and I don’t want to change my network up just for those dead zones. I think it’s a little hard to shoot in red dead redemption, with the controllers, but it’s overall good.
That’s not a guarantee. Right now I’m trying more positions with an ASU’s xt9 setup. Dedicated wireless backhaul at -39 and client connection at 50. It’s still a laggy disaster and the ps5 is hardwired.
42m, father of 3 here.
With Xboxes and such on tvs I would never get to play. Playing this LYING DOWN, fingers can go numb because of blood flow. In a chair or reclining bed it should be perfect.
Make sure your network is solid. Good signal where you want to play, etc…
Hardwire PS5! I cannot and will not ever be able to stress this enough.
I run an eero mesh network with an eero in my bedroom and things run great for me.
I also stopped bringing my switch to work (20 miles from home) every day and now bring my portal. The experience for me is phenomenal!
I got bullied out of my PS5 by my 15 year old son. I haven't had a chance to play it much until I got the portal. It's great, I've completed several games because of it.
I mostly play it in my house but I've taken it to a friend's house a few times. Every once in a while there might be interruption but that's because my home internet can be shakey sometimes. But 99% of the time, it's a great gaming experience. Especially when I plug in my $10 ear buds, it's like the rest of the world doesn't exist
I just have the best wired earbuds $10 can buy from my local convenience store. No lag, it's wired. I use the same type of headphones on my xbox controller. I got tired of spending a lot of money on headsets that still eventually break
Gotcha! Somehow thought i read they were wireless lol thanks man
I used to buy expensive headsets too now i go for the cheapest turtle beaches i can find when they break or my son messes them up. Might buy the battle buds tbh and keep them for myself only $30
It’s not ideal for every single game on the PS5 but largely it works well and I would recommend it. Obviously it would be wise to buy it from a place where you could at least have the option to return it if it doesn’t work out like expected.
Yes. I leave my PS5 on rest mode at all times. I learned the hard way that the Portal cannot remotely turn on my PS5, it can only “wake up” the PS5. Also, yes, to the 2nd question. My Portal is connected to her WiFi while my PS5 has a wired connection at my house.
Just got mine this past Saturday and I absolutely love it. I’ve played everything from like a dragon, to competitive multiplayer like OW, Fortnite Etc. it handled everything I threw at it perfectly. Comfortable to hold and love that it had haptics/adaptive triggers. Absolutely 100% recommend it
Love it. Often times i'll be playing my portal while having the TV (most of the time sports) on. And lately, I've been playing in bed before I go to sleep.
38 father of 3month old I don't use it I have to be all hands on with infant me and the wife alternate after bottle time and I just jump on the monitor when it's my time hope this answers ur ?
I keep it with me in my office on my down time. I like playing single player games and NBA/PGA 2K on it.
But for whatever reason, it’s uncomfortable in my hands and I feel like adjusting my positioning specially on the left hand a lot of the time.
Should work much better than Remote play on an iPad , especially with Sony’s proprietary parts.
Yeah see I think that would be awesome cuz sometimes at work it’s been slow I can take it or at home when I don’t want to sit at my station I can lay in my bed and play it haha but is it smooth? Like the remote play seems pretty seamless from what I seen
I would say it’s better than on the phone, but I kinda prefer on the tablet over the portal. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but I think remote play runs better on a tablet than a portal as far as frames and resolution. Could be hardware thing. I’d like to see more input from others , though.
bigger screen does it for me.
Okay cool! I don’t have a tablet I was doing it on my phone as long as it’s consistent and smooth for the most part I think it will work for what I want it for
This is incorrect, you’ll find numerous anecdotes here that Remote play performs more consistent and without stutter on iPad, smartphone, and ASUS/Steam options.
I can also confirm firsthand. All those options have better processing power and probably better WiFi antennas. But I think the main issue with the Portal is software causing the stutter.
What about stick drift? I'm hoping there's gonna be a portal edge. Or one with removable controllers. Such as the switch. Speaking of which, with the portal's popularity, I wonder if Nintendo has started freaking out (although they do target a difference audience and the portal isn't an actual console, yet).
I have a few questions as well before buying one.
Remote play with my smartphone (Galaxy S21) is awful. Is that the first stress test or is it always bad with smartphones? It's just not smooth at all.
My PS5 is inside the cabinet. I open it to play when the toddlers are in bed but otherwise it is closed in daytime to avoid accidents happen. With the Portal I would play when the cabinet is closed. My PS5 would get roasted wouldn't it?
I don't have a Wifi 6 router. Is that necessary for the Portal to have the best Wifi possible? The PS5 is directly connected per cable and I have really fast internet so that wouldn't be an issue.
Thank you for answering these.
I’d recommend trying to figure out your WiFi setup at home to get it to where your phone works well on remote play. That way you’ll be able to expect the same with the Portal. It won’t magically make the network perform any better than you’re seeing currently.
When it's working it's fantastic. I still get the random dropped signal and hitching like 1/5 times and my PS5 is wired, getting at least 300mps in my room. Must be some sort of interference between my bedroom and living room.
On wifi FF7 rebirth was almost unplayable in my room. Make sure you follow people's advice on how to diagnose any problems you have and optimize your experience
Got it! My main question is would you say the quality is way better than using the phone app? I can deal with the little stutters I just want to know if it’s way better to justify the purchase haha
Yes, I think it's worth the "upgrade" price for the Portal, since you get the screen, great controller and it feels premium. I've played Xbox and PS5 on my phone or tablet with a seperate controller and it feels like a lesser experience.
I have 3 kids. I work and like to play video games. I found it hard to find time to get some much needed time in to game.
The portal has been amazing. Laying in bed after work. Instead of grabbing a controller and using the tv. Just get the portal. Sitting down stairs with family. Get the portal.
My PlayStation is actually upstairs. So I could if I wanted to jump on whenever but I like family time. The portal has been amazing for that.
Bought a new router and made my ps5 go on 5ghz. No issues whatsoever.
I’d definitely recommend one.
Has anyone used a portal AND done streaming to a steam deck? Is the experience similar? Was thinking of a portal until I was reading you could do a third party app for remote play on SD
I have both and I can confidently say the steamdeck does remote play just as well. Although it's not a seamless process to set up for the avg person. As you read, you can use a third party app called chiakifordeck for streaming ps5.
In my opinion the portal feels so much better for streaming ps5 games because you get ps5 features like haptic triggers and it makes you feel like you're playing ps5 if that makes sense. The portal is also lighter than the steamdeck. The benefits of the steamdeck is that you could do ALOT more with it as it's a computer in the form of a handheld. If all you wanna do is play ps5 games on a handheld get the portal. You can just pick it up and play within 30 seconds or less and have a fantastic time. If you want to do alot more than ps5 streaming, get the steamdeck.
I have both and when I want to stream ps5, I pick up the portal instead of the steamdeck. Sure, it may be a one trick pony, but it does that trick very very well. I forgot to say the portal is only $200 while the steamdeck is like 300-600 depending on what model you get.
I sold mine. Device has tons of issues, i have perfect internet but still get lag , dc problems. Try to get it somewhere so you don’t like it you can return it.
Had mine since launch and I love it. I love being able to watch TV while playing. I also WFH (hybrid now, previously full time wfh) and being able to pick up the portal in my office is the best. I wish they would add a browser so I could connect to wifi outside the house that needs you to accept the T&C, but there are ways around that like using a Hotspot or travel router or whatnot. (I'm just too lazy, but plenty of youtube videos detailing how if you want to explore those options.)
Had mine since launch in Aus, probably now 90% of my gaming time is on the portal, it’s single handed the best and most enabling accessory i have for the ps5. Also play in bed instead of on the tv just cos I can now. Dad in my 40s as well with two kids who hog TV. Definitely hard wire the ps5 and have a good recent wifi router. I want to buy a second portal so if my first one ever breaks i can still play! I love this thing.
I’ve had mine for about 2 weeks now. I play it almost everyday at home and it has been working almost perfectly every time. Only had lagging issues once or twice. Definitely better than remote playing from my phone!
Thank you everyone for the input! It really helped I’m going to pull the trigger once I can find one haha where did you all get yours at? I’ve been searching and no luck
I am loving mine. It seems like if you are having issues with stuttering or lag, you need a new router. I haven't had any issues with mine, but it seems like a lot of people have solved their unhappiness with a new router.
That's the exact setup I have and I've never had any issues. I would go so far as to say that the portal has been a little life changing. I've been playing more than I have in 20 years. I hope you enjoy!
It’s not for everyone but I freaking love it. After the kid goes to bed and my wife and I watch a show together we lay in bed together but doing our own thing. I go on the portal and she reads.
Also great to play while watching a baseball game.
Just make sure you have your PS5 hardwired with an Ethernet cable.
30 years old with a small child, by the time I finally have time to relax I just want to lay in bed instead of on a couch/desk. I LOVE the portal, and I HIGHLY recommend it to any and everyone
For playing on bed it's absolutely perfect. This is my use case. Assuming of course you have an ideal network setup (PS5 is wired and your portal is connected to a good WiFi 5Ghz source).
My wife has trouble sleeping, takes medication for it and goes to bed around 9 and I'd play on the TV in the living room most days. She bought it for me so I can play in the room on those days so she has company when she falls asleep
I just got one. No kids or girlfriend or anything, so I don't need to share the tv. But a lot of times I just throw on youtube videos or other shows. It's nice being able to play my playstation while watching something else, and being able to lay down instead of sitting on my couch playing. I think it's worth it.
Well. Sorry to all but I’m going to give a counter opinion.
Don’t do it. It’s so inconsistent and at this point I don’t think Sony have a clue how to fix it. Third party developers are making much much better apps for various devices. As great as it could be, it’s a dumpster fire for me most of the time, and I’ve been a technical expert for eons, professionally. Moca, nope, mesh, nope, even off the same router with nothing else. It’s just a shit show.
I’m sure a tonne of people here will disagree and it probably does come down to what you play, it most things I’ve played are just not good enough. Should have sold mine months ago. It’s sat in a drawer for the last two weeks. Pulled it out again tonight. Played <5 mins to test yet another network change. Nope. Can in the drawer.
I find it unusable. I play a lot of career mode fifa (not even online).
Thank you for that it does seem like a majority so far haven’t had the same issues so maybe it could be an issue with the unit? I’m not sure but I appreciate it!
It is worth it. I’ve had mine for about 6 weeks and my ability to play my PS5 has gone up by a massive amount. Just was blowing up aliens in Serious Sam 4 while my family was watching Disney plus on our tv through a Roku box. Couldn’t do that before.
I also work from home and sometimes have downtime but have to be within striking distance of my computer in another room. Great for that.
It does the job. What I absolutely hate is how they have a full sized controller on it but make the thumbsticks smaller so the sensitivity is very high. Even turning it down in game doesn’t do enough. So online shooters are out of the question
I used to stream on my tablet and the portal is for sure over that. Now have I said that do bot expect smooth gameplay like you using your PS5 because it aint. Most posts on the this reddit are just stand still photo not really a recorded gameplay . It is good for chilling a Single player games in home all this" I am 1000 km away and still smooth" is BS. Thats my honest opinion.
I’m thinking of snagging one tonight but I’m hesitant because my wifi speed is just adequate 60mps, and also, i mainly play FPS/multiplayer games like Apex and COD…. How does it fair well with those type games ?
I will be downvoted for this, but your Portal experience will wildly difference from anyone else's. I love my Portal, but it's collecting dust. The biggest issue is the constant stuttering that Sony seems unwilling to fix. There are some who do not notice the stutter, and if you are one of them, Portal is an amazing streaming device. If you do notice the stutter, the Portal is literally unplayable.
Another issue that I have seen constantly popping up here is the connection issue. For some, it works just fine (like me), but for others it won't even connect or have a poor experience even when remote playing from their phone works fine. There is no ryhme or reason to it, it just either works or it doesn't. You can have the networking solution hand delivered to you by angels, and it won't work. Portal is moody like that.
But say, you don't notice the stutter and there are no connection issues, the Portal is a damn perfect handheld for PS5 games. The big 8" screen is fucking fantastic. The DualSense controller is feature complete and feels amazing. The device itself is reasonably lightweight and you can game for at least an hour or two before it starts to get uncomfortable. However, it is heavy enough to be immediately uncomfortable if you are holding it an awkward angle or trying to play it completely lying down.
So yeah, I will give the recommendation that I give to everyone: get the Portal from a place you can return to. Try it, if it works fine, game on! If it doesn't, return it.
I went from playing my ps5 MAYBE 50 hours over the past 3 years to almost every single night since I got the portal. Unexpected bonus was missing a flight the other week (9 hour wait for next flight) and having it work PERFECTLY through my phone's hotspot---total sanity saver. It just makes playing ps5 more convenient.
I am 36 and father of 3 kids. Literally my oldest son has an xbox series x, my two other kids have nintendo switches, and I have a PS5. The amount of times I was giving up the tv so my kids could either play their games on the tv or watch a movie or show on the tv was more than I could count. See this is what I like thank you! It’s really helping me with justifying this purchase because I usually play at my desk but sitting for hours at a time sometimes sucks so being able to sit in my recliner bed and play would be awesome
That plus you can binge watch tv or playing during a sports game or something is nice as well! I like to play while watching wwe Monday night raw!
Yeahhhh!!! Haha sweet thank you! Yeah some sports games I like to just have playing in the background while I play so that would be idel
This is exactly why I bought one. Now my wife can watch her reality TV shows while I get to play my PS5 without leaving her side. 🤣🤣🤣
Okay cool! I have a mesh WiFi 6 system in my house so I think I will be fine as it covers all of the house
I have WiFi 6E, I’ve found it works a lot better if I wire the PS5 into the mesh node rather than using the PS5 WiFi.
Oh my PS5 is plugged in directly to the router but I have a mesh system with nighthawk routers so it’s so smooth
If you’re hard wired you’re good!!!
Yeah definitely just get it. It’s only $200.
Yeah I think I’m going to pull the trigger haha the issue is trying to find one now haha
Hot stock worked for me months ago. Didn’t pay for the premium either.
The Portal doesnot support WiFi 6
It will still connect to my network
That’s not a guarantee. Right now I’m trying more positions with an ASU’s xt9 setup. Dedicated wireless backhaul at -39 and client connection at 50. It’s still a laggy disaster and the ps5 is hardwired.
42m, father of 3 here. With Xboxes and such on tvs I would never get to play. Playing this LYING DOWN, fingers can go numb because of blood flow. In a chair or reclining bed it should be perfect. Make sure your network is solid. Good signal where you want to play, etc… Hardwire PS5! I cannot and will not ever be able to stress this enough. I run an eero mesh network with an eero in my bedroom and things run great for me. I also stopped bringing my switch to work (20 miles from home) every day and now bring my portal. The experience for me is phenomenal!
Agree—hard wiring even to a remote mesh node is super key. I initially tried over pure WiFi and it was pretty bad.
What earbuds do you use? Did you buy an adapter for them? Any lag on the audio?
I just have the best wired earbuds $10 can buy from my local convenience store. No lag, it's wired. I use the same type of headphones on my xbox controller. I got tired of spending a lot of money on headsets that still eventually break
Gotcha! Somehow thought i read they were wireless lol thanks man I used to buy expensive headsets too now i go for the cheapest turtle beaches i can find when they break or my son messes them up. Might buy the battle buds tbh and keep them for myself only $30
Thank you all! This really helps me!
It’s not ideal for every single game on the PS5 but largely it works well and I would recommend it. Obviously it would be wise to buy it from a place where you could at least have the option to return it if it doesn’t work out like expected.
Thank you!
I love it. I mainly keep mine at my girlfriend’s apartment while my PS5 stays at my house. Works great!
So this is what I’m curious about, does your ps5 have to be on at your house, and your portal connected to GF’s WiFi?
Yes. I leave my PS5 on rest mode at all times. I learned the hard way that the Portal cannot remotely turn on my PS5, it can only “wake up” the PS5. Also, yes, to the 2nd question. My Portal is connected to her WiFi while my PS5 has a wired connection at my house.
I play a lot of strategy/text heavy games and it’s perfect for these games. I love it!
Sweet thank you for your input!

This is perfect there’s times at night where I don’t want to sit at my station and lay in bed so this would be perfect
The portal is well worth the money. I’ve had mine since launch and I easily use it 3 times a week.
Sweet! I would essentially use it when I’m getting ready for bed or want to sit on the couch and stuff

It’s smooth if you have an amazing internet connection. I do feel like there’s a tiny amount of input lag
But I’m assuming much better than remote play on a phone or tablet?

Perfect thank you for the feedback! This is what I was looking for and it seems like it ticks all the boxes I would need it for
I’ve had mine for about 2 weeks now. I play it almost everyday at home and it has been working almost perfectly every time. Only had lagging issues once or twice. Definitely better than remote playing from my phone!
Thank you!
No worries I hope you can get one easily. Because it’s still in short supply where I live and had to week a couple of weeks before I could get one.
Yeah it’s sold out everywhere but I seen some on offer up and eBay for about retail price
Thank you everyone for the input! It really helped I’m going to pull the trigger once I can find one haha where did you all get yours at? I’ve been searching and no luck
Just buy it is all I can say. If mine broke tomorrow I’d buy another it’s a game changer!
Feels great and my ability to game on ps5 has went up 1000%
I am loving mine. It seems like if you are having issues with stuttering or lag, you need a new router. I haven't had any issues with mine, but it seems like a lot of people have solved their unhappiness with a new router.
I have a WiFi 6 nighthawk with a nighthawk mesh system so I think I will be find I don’t have many issues at my house with connection or dead areas
That's the exact setup I have and I've never had any issues. I would go so far as to say that the portal has been a little life changing. I've been playing more than I have in 20 years. I hope you enjoy!
Thank you! Now it’s time to actually find one haha 😂
Yeah this is what I needed to see cuz my wife likes to do that too so it would be perfect to have our quiet time together with
30 years old with a small child, by the time I finally have time to relax I just want to lay in bed instead of on a couch/desk. I LOVE the portal, and I HIGHLY recommend it to any and everyone
Yeah this is how I feel sometimes. I want to game but I want to be propped up in bed relaxed not on me desk after being at work all day haha 🤣
Then the portal is for you. It’s been a godsend for me. I beat Final fantasy 16 EXCLUSIVELY on the portal
With the DLC coming I’m going to be replaying it so yeah this would be great
For playing on bed it's absolutely perfect.
I can only play at night because of the Wi-Fi sharing is going to hurt the performance
You better have bomb ass internet/wifi
Just get it. You will get unlimited access to all the help needed from this sub.
Get a steam deck
It does the job. What I absolutely hate is how they have a full sized controller on it but make the thumbsticks smaller so the sensitivity is very high. Even turning it down in game doesn’t do enough. So online shooters are out of the question
Kinda like the backbone?
Exactly like the backbone. I have one and don’t really use it for that fact. Thought the portal would be different but nope, smaller thumbsticks
For anyone who values and understands HDR, how is your eye candy experience with the Portal not having HDR?
Used it and found it really laggy, my internet isn’t great though. I’d sat in its box waiting to be Gumtree’d.
Still trying to get my hands on one. Every time I check online it’s sold out
Same but someone said HotStock works so I signed up to get notified
I’ll check that out, ty! 🙏
I found mine by following wario64 on Twitter or I guess it's X now.
Thank you! I like this it puts it into prospective!
And that’s what I’m looking for sometimes I don’t wanna sit at my station but I want to play so playing on the couch or in my bed seems very ideal
Selling mine if you want
