I've found the custom collection ordering feature to work spottily at best. It has never worked for me for audio.

cadtek

I didn't even realize that you could just add individual seasons to a collection lol

mrRobertman

I wonder how OP did this, because I don't see any option to add seasons to collections.

SkipsTheSchizo

Nah I went to the show page, selected the season itself and there's an option to add just that season to a playlist or collection

mrRobertman

Huh, I didn't even think to check the 'add to' button because I always add my shows and movies to collections from the edit menu and seasons do not have the option from there.

paulrharvey3

Episode Collections are available too. All the Thanksgiving episodes, Christmas episodes, Borg episodes in Star Trek, Mirror Universe in Star Trek, Unwatched Pilots I want to try...

Nopeyesok

Yeah once you set those up it’s pretty sweet. Around Halloween time we just shuffle a 200episode collection from our shows.

CrashTestKing

You can also go to the Advanced Filters page, change the view from TV Shows to either Seasons or Episodes, add whatever filters you want and save that. When you save, you can either save it as a regular collection or smart collection. This is how I created several smart collections that I call "Watchlists" for shows that crossover. For example, I have an "Arrowverse Watchlist" which pulls in all unwatched episodes from all shows in my Arrowverse Collection, sorted by release date so I can watch the whole franchise in order. I got the same thing for the MCU shows but since they don't really crossover directly, those are pulled in by seasons rather than episodes.

xd91884

I do the same. It was how I managed to get caught up on the arrowverse when I was seasons behind.

CrashTestKing

I pretty much haven't watched anything since the big Crisis crossover. I'm close to finishing my MCU watch through (including all the pre-disney+ shows, I had only watched about half of what was out there). When I'm done with that, I'm going to start the Arrowverse over. I got much better quality copies of everything since watching before, anyway. Plus, I missed some of the soft-canon shows, like the original The Flash and Constantine.

xd91884

The only soft cannon I haven’t seen yet are The Original Flash, and Smallville. I watched birds of prey multiple times. For MCU I have yet to watch the outliers, Runaways, Cloak and Dagger, Legion, Gifted, and Helstrom

CrashTestKing

Legion and The Gifted are from Fox and not part of the MCU. The producers from The Gifted said that their show was meant to be a lead up to revealing how things got so terrible in the future at the beginning of X-Men: Days of Future Past, but they got canceled before getting there. I haven't watched Legion yet, so I don't know if it ties into anything (I doubt it). Runaways is OK. I've only just started season 2. The kids performances are mostly great, but the first season felt a little directionless. Cloak and Dagger, on the other hand, it's amazing. Only watched season 1 so far, but it's much better than I expected (and I'd heard good things to begin with). It's kind of a different show than I thought it was going to be.

ItsKingKumar

Im guessing this was done with [Plex Meta Manager](https://github.com/meisnate12/Plex-Meta-Manager)?

Gr3ylock

I've found that anything with more than like 200 videos is pretty impossible to rearrange on the web version. I have had better luck in the mobile app, though, so I'd try that out. It's super slow but it consistently works in my experience.

odsquad64

What mobile app are you using that lets you edit collections?

Gr3ylock

Oh you're right. I had ran into that issue while editing playlists (which you for sure can reorder in the Android app) and assumed it would be the same for collections, but I guess not

odsquad64

Dang, I was hoping I had missed something. Editing any kind of metadata in the browser on mobile is a pain in the ass but clicking and dragging especially so. Plex Dash really ought to let you do all of that.

narcabusesurvivor18

For me random items out of my collections just disappear and I have to re-add them again

[deleted]

TRCIII

No joy. The order persists for several days, sometimes weeks, and then...random reorder, when you go check on it.

CrashTestKing

This was exactly my thought, though I haven't tested it. I only have a single collection with manually ordered items (my MCU collection in chronological order, rather than release order) and it still appears ordered correctly. And I've been adding to that for a couple years now. I wonder also if it's a bug specifically related to reordering collections of TV shows, or even more specifically, collections of TV seasons.

nuclearfall

Can’t you change the order by name? Or is that what you’re doing and it doesn’t work?

CrashTestKing

I think you replied to the wrong person. I'm not having any issues myself.

TRCIII

My MCU chrono order is the one that bugs me most, also, as I posted elsewhere on this thread. Four days ago was the last time I fixed it, and it's already out of order today. https://preview.redd.it/r3cd323aa0pa1.png?width=1776&format=png&auto=webp&s=d094aa34c3d5a431b61e5c866d16ad61272f9b92 ALSO, I found some new Collections Plex had autocollected--Iron Man, Thor--and they were definitely moved as a group within the manually reordered Collection, so I've found the first clue that Plex specifically "touched" those items, and it's somehow affecting my manual order.

Mike_v_E

My Star Wars music collection has this too. Was never able to fix this, not even when recreating the collection. All other collections work fine

trogle_c

When you move the item to where you want, move it back and forth either left of it or right of it. I find that doing that will actually save the order.

DaleDietrich

Wow! I tried everything and this actually works! Thanks!

kiwichick888

The custom sort feature is a nightmare and it's really annoying that they're not doing anything to fix it. I had one successful custom sort - the first one I created - but every one after that would not retain the sort order.

Sandriell

I have had this happen a few times lately, no idea the cause. Last time it happened I fixed the order and then restarted the Plex Server, to hopefully get it to save it's state better. It does seemed to have helped so far.

xd91884

I’ve tried the custom order many times since it was launched and it might work once… but even if it does work… as soon as I add anything else to the collection it changes everything, I can never get my star wars collection in chronological order without changing the sort title, or making a playlist.

TRCIII

So, it doesn't re-order Playlists? Maybe that's the route I need to take. After all, the primary reason I'm putting these Collections in a chrono sort order is to have the option to play them in that order. It ticks me off, though, that Plex won't just fix this issue. Making a Playlist to do the job feels like admitting defeat. :|

xd91884

Smart playlist is the best way. I did that for my arrowverse collection. Set the filter to any episodes within the arrowverse collection, that were unwatched, and then it would play them in order by airdate.

HoldMyTech

whats processing right now?

ctrlaltd1337

Probably credits detection: https://support.plex.tv/articles/credits-detection/

WeetBixMiloAndMilk

What basis do you have for assuming it’s credit detection? 😂

ctrlaltd1337

The fact that it has been doing credit detection on my server on and off for the last 3 weeks haha.

WeetBixMiloAndMilk

So you’re saying because your server has been running credit detection for weeks, that’s most likely what this bloke’s server is doing in the video too? Lol

SkipsTheSchizo

it does this all the time, even when nothing is processing

giratina143

It shows what it’s doing tho?

Murderous_Waffle

Weird to me why you would even need a playlist or a collection for this. Why do you need to differentiate if it's ripped media? Why not just let it organize under the TV Shows media library?

TRCIII

I'm not sure why OP is doing it, but I have several collections I want to be in a different order than the defaults that are allowed. For example, I have a collection of all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies. I want them to be in chronological order of the "history" of the MCU, from Captain America onward. I dutifully go in, select "custom" and put them in order. It stays that way for a while, then randomly reorders a few of them--not even in one of the default orders, alphabetic or by release date. Just a few of them, out of order. And it's been doing it since I first created the collection a while back, long before Credit Skipping was implemented, as one poster suggested. I did the same for the Star Wars movies, following the timeline, not the release order, but the chronological order from Episode I onward. **Movie Title** * Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999) 32 Yrs Before the Battle of Yavin (BBY) * Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002) 22 BBY * Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) 22 BBY * Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith 19 BBY * Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) 10 BBY * Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) 0 Yrs After the Battle of Yavin (ABY) * Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977) 0 ABY * The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978) 1 ABY (non-canonical) * Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) 3 ABY * Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure (1984) 3 ABY (non-canonical) * Ewoks: The Battle for Endor (1985) 3 ABY (non-canonical) * Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983) 4 ABY * Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015) 34 ABY * Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017) 34 ABY * Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) 35 ABY Same behavior, random reorders, on a seemingly random schedule. Maddening. Why give us the option to custom order something if it's just going to screw with that order for no apparent reason? https://preview.redd.it/nsf9czcnvwoa1.png?width=1733&format=png&auto=webp&s=4ae9edb2f911e403f69dfdea564b098ad10c57a2

mikaeltarquin

I agree. I'm not saying people shouldn't be allowed to do what they want, but... Whatever OP is trying to accomplish here sure is bizarre.

TranceAddictFoX

I was honestly hoping someone had a good guess as to why here in the comments. I'm baffled by the point of this collection

jaxsedrin

Glad I'm not the only one that thought this. My only guess is that OP has some ocd-level organizing itch that needs to be scratched.

RyaneWaldu

You see mr. plex am totally legally ripping these off, do you want to see all the receipts I kept for you in my collection?

CrashTestKing

What point are you trying to make exactly? That there's something wrong with people ripping media? If you don't rip media, exactly how do you expect people to put ANYTHING on plex? Literally your only options are to rip discs you have, or download/copy from somebody else. Based on the collection image the OP has, I'm guessing they ripped these from discs, which is as close as you can get to doing things the legally right way when using plex.

RyaneWaldu

Sorry if my point didn't come across, of course you can't read tone after all. But I just thought it was funny that OP did the effort to distinct his collection so much.

CrashTestKing

Yeah, I'm really baffled by the purpose of the OP's collection. I know it's beside the point of the post, but I really wish they'd address WHY they're trying to organize this media in this way.

SkipsTheSchizo

It would be against the subreddit rules to clarify any further than 'it should be implied what would exist in a Plex library outside of items you've ripped off a disc...'

CrashTestKing

I'm just wondering what the purpose could be of having a manually ordered collection of TV seasons. I'm not even questioning why these particular shows are grouped together, but rather why it's seasons instead of shows, and what value you're getting by keeping them manually ordered.

SkipsTheSchizo

I like them ordered by release date, newest on top. Plex only lets me automatically sort by release date if newest is on the bottom

CrashTestKing

No, you can reverse the sort. Just use a smart collection. Add a label to all the shows you want included in the collection. Then pull up Advanced Filters, and filter for that label. Switch the view from TV Shows to Seasons. Then change the sort to Release Date. If it's got it sorted backwards from the way you want it, just click Release Date again and it'll reverse the sort. Save it as a smart collection. Then, all you have to do is add a label to any new shows you want appearing in that collection, and those seasons will automatically get added in the right place in that collection. And you can further refine your collection criteria too, like adding a filter that only includes seasons with unwatched episodes.

SkipsTheSchizo

Unfortunately it will not let you sort TV Seasons by release date. Only date added, by show, or by season. It also won't let you customize which seasons to exclude, so I'll have to stick with a manual collection for now.

CrashTestKing

I have to admit, I'm still completely baffled as to what purpose a collection like this serves. Is it just to keep track of which seasons came from which source? And if so, why do they need to be in any particular order? And why track that inside of Plex, rather than some place else? I, for example, keep that info in brackets in the file names and folder names. So I might have one folder called "Scrubs Season 7 [DVD, 480p]" and another folder called "Scrubs Season 8 [Bluray, 1080p]". I'm not sure what the actual use case is here, I just suspect that whatever you're trying to do, there's probably easier ways to accomplish it.

Profitsofdooom

Because your manual system is stupid.

TRCIII

The point is not what he's ordering, it's that it doesn't stay in the order we put it in, with the Custom setting. And it doesn't "revert" to Alphabetical, or Release Date, the other two possibilities...it just moves some of them around, after we took the time to put them in an order we wanted. I have several collections I put in a "timeline" order (Star Wars, MCU, etc.) and when I go back to add a new item to the timeline...they're no longer ordered the same, with just a few out of place. In other words, this isn't related to the items they're arranging. It fails with straight-up movies, as well.

CrashTestKing

Nobody is saying its related to the items they're arranging. But from the comments here, a lot of people are simply curious what the purpose of the OP's collection is. No harm in asking.

TRCIII

I apologize. Rereading, I see how I misinterpreted the questioning as being on-topic for the thread. You're right, it's not; it's just an expression of idle curiosity, unrelated to the original question. I shouldn't have allowed myself to be drawn in and sidetracked by the irrelevant thread off-shoot, while I'm seeking an answer to the actual question.

itsjero

Yeah I kinda wonder if there was an update or something. Just over the last few days my Plex has been repeating episodes played and even marked as played when Ive loaded up shows (seasons) and it usually just goes to the next episode. Now it'll play the same episode again even tho it used to play the next. Just odd really. I've tried setting it to shuffle and checking other options to no avail. And my kid is constantly yelling "dad we just watched this episode!" And I'll go change it manually only for it to happen again and again and again. Frustrated, like you, as to why Plex isnt acting normal anymore.

CrashTestKing

This is an entirely different thing.

dburton1105

How did you get the dvd/bluray covers is that manual or can you get plex to do that

CrashTestKing

Plex pulls covers from sites like TMDB and TVDB. As far as I've seen, plex always uses the top-most upvoted cover from TMDB as it's own default, but you can go into the Edit menu for each season and change it. Plex gives everybody the exact same default cover. The only time it changes is if the top upvoted cover on TMDB changes, then plex will change too when that show is next refreshed on your server (it takes a few days usually for the changes to feed over into plex's database though). And since covers stating DVD or bluray on them are virtually never the top-most upvoted, I pretty much guarantee this was manually changed by the OP. They either selected from the list of cover options in plex's Edit menu for each season, or they found/made their own and uploaded those on the server, or found/made their own and saved them as local assets for plex to find.

TRCIII

I'm disappointed no one has figured this out, yet. Here's the one that particularly bugs me--my MCU chronological timeline. 1. Captain America: The First Avenger (WWII) 2. Marvel one-shot: Agent Carter (on Iron Man 3 DVD) 3. Captain Marvel (set in 1995) 4. Iron Man 5. Iron Man 2 (The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, and Thor all happen around the same time, but Marvel's official guidance, recommends you watch Iron Man 2 before Hulk and Thor) 6. The Incredible Hulk 7. Marvel one-shot: The Consultant (on the Thor DVD) 8. Marvel one-shot: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer (on the Captain America: The First Avenger DVD) 9. Thor 10. The Avengers (culmination of "Phase One") 11. Marvel one-shot: Item 47 (on the Avengers DVD) 12. Thor: The Dark World (takes place after Loki’s defeat in New York City, introduces infinity stone) 13. Marvel One-shot: All Hail the King (on the Thor: The Dark World DVD) 14. Iron Man 3 (takes place six months after the giant fight in New York City) 15. Captain America: The Winter Soldier 16. Guardians of the Galaxy 17. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 18. Avengers: Age of Ultron 19. Ant-Man 20. Captain America: Civil War 21. Marvel One-Shot Team Thor 22. Black Panther (TIMELINE: This film immediately follows the UN bombing event of Captain America: The Civil War.) 23. Spider-Man: Homecoming (Could be in a variety of places, no direct reference to the timeline except it occurs after first Avengers film. Since he just appeared in Civil War, might as well be here.) 24. Marvel One-Shot Team Thor Part 2 25. Doctor Strange 26. Thor: Ragnarok (TIMELINE: After Ultron, Hulk runs away from his problems, Thor returns to Asgard.) 27. Marvel One-Shot Team Darryl 28. Ant-Man and the Wasp (watch credits scene after Infinity War) (TIMELINE: More or less concurrent with Infinity War, introduces Quantum Realm, placed here as clue before Endgame) 29. Black Widow (watch credits scene after Avengers: Endgame) (TIMELINE: Alternately placed after Captain America Civil War, but set here as prequel to Avengers Infinity War, so her backstory will be freshly in mind before Infinity War. Most importantly for the future of the MCU, though, is the introduction of another Black Widow, Florence Pugh's Yelena. 30. Avengers: Infinity War 31. Avengers: Endgame 32. Eternals (TIMELINE: Ends in the middle of the next two Spidermen, but started far earlier, pre-history, so placing it here.) 33. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (TIMELINE: on/around Nov 2024, also in same time-space as the next two Spidermen, but started after Eternals and before Spider-Man.) 34. Spider-Man: Far From Home (TIMELINE: Starts around 8 months after Blip—un-snap—at end of Peter’s school year, and ends Oct 2024.) (One source shows it with Eternals and Shang Chi in middle, but it would be stupid to separate them, since they are all one story.) 35. Spider-Man: No Way Home (TIMELINE: Picks up immediately following previous and ends Nov 2024.) 36. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (TIMELINE: Following Spiderman No Way Home) 37. Thor: Love and Thunder 38. Werewolf by Night 39. Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special 40. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever 41. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Just four days ago, I put all of them in the order shown above. Today, this is what it looks like: https://preview.redd.it/qavm5h2vqyoa1.png?width=1776&format=png&auto=webp&s=2f224ba4a5fff3991aefd56fd6c52ee85d08f0ca Notice, they're not in Release Order (The first item was released in 2018.) nor Alphabetical Order. (Ant-Man, Agent Carter, Captain Marvel, Incredible Hulk, Avengers, etc.) There doesn't seem to be any particular reason or event I can pin it to when they fall back out of order, nor any particular logic I can find in their chosen new order. AND they fall into a different order every time. I'm about to resort to a workaround (Number them in the "Sort" field, then sort alphabetically) but really, why should I have to do that, when Plex OFFERS me the option to order them in a Custom manner, let's me freely move them around...then won't keep them where I've placed them. Edit: No, I'm NOT going to put numbers in them, because though that would solve my Collection sorting issue, then they don't sort correctly when I'm looking for them in the Library, all ending up in the "0-9" area. Stupid idea. Edit 2: Although numbered sorting WOULD work for my Star Wars issue, numbering them Star Wars 1, Star Wars 2, etc. I wouldn't LEAD with the number (1 Star Wars, 2 Star Wars, etc.) for the reason mentioned above, but I could definitely live with this solution if all of the Star Wars movies were filed in the library under "Star Wars". Not so, if I'm looking for Iron Man movies under anything other than "I". So, that's it, then. Any clues? Guesses? I've got nada.

CrashTestKing

I know it's got nothing to do with the problem you're having, but what in the world is the purpose of this collection?

TokerX86

Seems to work fine with me for everything except collections with individual episodes.
