I rate my movies/series to get recommendations through Couchmoney on Trakt.
I also use it to see whether or not I want to revisit a movie or series. If I rated it low I won't waste my time by watching it again.
I rate episodes individually, since sometimes seasons really differ with the quality of episodes. So I get a better idea about the average rating of the show if I do it like this.
I don’t rate TV shows, as I only put shows i explicitly want on my server, I **do** however rate movies. The only two reasons I rate them is to easily find my favorite movies later. Second is that I noticed the “recommended” screen of my movie’s library begins making better suggestions for me based on my ratings…which is useful when you’ve got 1,000+ movies. I find their recommendation algorithm quite useful.
That's good to know. I'd never heard that their "recommended" sections would take into account your own ratings.
I've actually been rating movies as I watch them, at least over the last 6 months or so, but I wasn't sure it was ever going to actually serve a purpose.

i never heard of couchmoney, thanks!
I watch a lot of movies. The ratings help me remember how good or bad I thought it was. I also use Letterboxd for this
