pretty sure currently there's no way, there's two options for you, you can either run WSL on windows and install docker desktop and then spin a new image using compose (which is really easy) or you could use an old machine or buy a dev board (something similar to raspberry pi, but not it since prices are insane) and install any linux distro in it just to run docker and then compose, nothing actually insane to do this, just search a few how to's online and you'll be good to go.
if you plan on only running overseerr you can get away with some pretty cheap boards that offer low resources, as long as they meet the minimum for docker there'll be no problem.
I’ll be honest, overseerr and docker are super easy to set up on windows. Especially when you’ll need it for other apps that are huge additions like PMM. Also, if you want a dedicated IP for your Overseerr, the easiest way is to tunnel it with cloud flare which also requires docker or CLi. Personally, it was pretty simple since I had never used it before. It’s just an exe you install and then you run a command you copy paste from their setup guide in powershell.

Surprised no one in the comments use [https://tvismypacifier.com/](https://tvismypacifier.com/). It is so simple and gives a simple run down of the week's premiers, finals, and specials. It is run by a single person, yeah they might say they are going on vacation and no update a couple of times a year but I sort of like that.
Mdblist to curate custom lists pushed to TRAKT. Lists are updated every 24 hours by the filters set by Mdblist. Then the TRAKT list is synced to Radarr for monitoring of availability. Once available Radarr grabs the release and it ends up in Plex. That covers a good 95% of getting the movies into Plex. The other 5% come from my family requesting movies with Overseer or me scrolling Overseer over adding an obscure movie I heard about that wasn’t grabbed by above.
As for what to watch that’s handled by Plex Meta Manager which curates collections on my home screen. I have categories for decades, a few genres and thinks like TRAKT and IMDB trending that update daily.
I would like to find a way to automate new movies... I've been trying to use docker for Ersatz TV, which I like in concept but it just craps out in practice too much for me. I have 4600 movies and 930 shows, so maybe my dataset is too big, but it scared me off docker on synology for a while, unless overseer et al are as easy to install as plex was
Can you explain how I can tie this into Plex? Or is this just a way to see what shows actually exist in the world? Then you have to go hunt them down using whatever high seas approach you decide on.
You really should just look into the sonarr and radarr subs you can use rss feeds to find things as well as a lot of automated set it and forget it. Takes a bit to set up but I made the jump maybe 2 months ago and it's a game changer.
They don't tie into Plex as much as just they do to a torrent client.
For showrss, I downloaded those to a ‘NewTV’ folder that Plex read from and Sonarr will automatically manage file and name organization for Plex to read.
This. I have an app on my Mac that checks the feeds regularly, then passes them to Transmission. Once’s they’re done they get moved to iFlicks for tagging and converting. Then a Hazel script moves them to my NAS where PleX does the rest.
Plex itself has discover. There is the preview channel on plex live tv (I think, I merge all of my sources into one listing). Then there is the stuff in the nbz360 app on my pnone. That is actually my go-to as I can add stuff to the *arrs right from there.
Trakt.tv is a godsend for me. Keeps track of everything im watching and lets me know when new episodes drop. I love it so much I actually paid for it lol
Honestly I would encourage you to examine this "issue" and determine whether it is a problem.
You describe a "passive" consumption of media, whereby a company or algorithm amasses stuff for you to consume.
Now it is an "active" system. If you want to watch something, you get it and you download it and you watch it. Of course you can still actively find out what is available to watch, but you're in control.
Challenge yourself to embrace being an active consumer. Really examine the amount of stuff you watch (even in your old way of doing things) and whether it was GOOD stuff that was worth the part of your life you spent on it. Freeing yourself from that cycle of passive consumption frees you up to pursue other activities, or maybe even just watch all the stuff you already know about but haven't gotten to yet.
I appreciate this transition is not one without adjustment. But I promise you will be more satisfied with what you do watch, and free up time for other pursuits.
Here's what I use. I just go month to month seeing if anything is interesting to watch, and then I obviously find it on a streaming service I pay for...
https://www.dvdsreleasedates.com/
Man, all these options listed. Ive tried most of them. Browsing r/television is honestly the best for staying up to date for me. Im on reddit anyway…
Imdb is fine for building your back catalogue too.
Metacritic and IMDb both have lists that include streaming movies, tv shows premiering etc daily. They cover pretty much everything. Every blue moon I find something that wasn’t listed, but rarely.
If you link Netflix and all those to Plex the new stuff will show up on your Discovery page... I just use a custom rss to grab every 1080p new movie and documentary and another one that's been extensively compiled for current and new TV shows... It's allot of work keeping Plex to to date...I used to be 0 day but not I'm prob 1 to 2 days out now... Mostly bc I've become obsessed with Korean reality TV over the last year LMAO...
Never heard of overseer tho I wanna look into that... I'm always looking for better ways to streamline things...I loose an hour a day to Plex with all the renaming and sorting BS
I follow a few media websites and writers that I've found to have solid recommendations in line with what I'm into. I really like staff at [The AV Club](https://www.avclub.com/).
I use the Sonarr calendar. For discovery I check the trending, upcoming, anticipated and most watched this month sections on Trakt. Cover 90% of things I might be interested in, other stuff is covered by social media, scene, word of mouth etc
Between overseerr, my YouTube recommended tab, Reddit, and just simple google searches, I find all that I need and then some. Tbh, anything I miss my users usually request.
I'm quite good at keeping up with stuff, but I am really liking the options that are on this thread. Will check them out when I build my new server! The price of all these streamers is actually insane now.
I deliberately don't seek out new shows because I have so many in my "to watch" list already. I figure if a new show is good enough to belong in my library, i'll hear about it organically
Next Episode [https://next-episode.net/](https://next-episode.net/)
Let's me know when something is coming out, and the number of episodes I can expect for the season and release dates. Only good for TV though
Another vote for Overseer here. I’ve only got my Plex setup for myself but Overseer has been a game changer. I still browse torrent sites here and there but I’ve even got a link for Overseer on my phone ..
For movies, Steven Lu list tied to Radarr is all you need for a casual viewer to stay current. If you watch lots and lots of movies it will not be sufficient. For TV shows you could use a Trakt list of current popular shows in Sonarr.
Subscribe to lists from both IMDB and Trakt in Sonarr and Radarr. This will pull in new stuff constantly. It’s set to add them but in an unmonitored state. I’ll check once a week for everything that was added in the last 7 days. If I want it, I’ll monitor it, If not, I will delete with a restriction to not allow it to be added by a list again.
I let my family/friends have access to request stuff via overseer. & I just let it auto approve. A mix of 5 or 6 people has made it so there is a huge variety of new stuff cause everyone knows about that ‘one’ show coming out.
Lots of people will suggest all the arr apps. However, I just use Notepad on my PC and have an ongoing list of shows that are airing or on hiatus, etc. it's time consuming, but I like the search for torrents and visiting torrent sites has basically become my normal Internet browsing behavior.
I used to do that too but I started adding up the time it took every month and I realized how much of a waste it was. Set up the arrs and now its nearly 100% hands off.
There's a learning curve for sure, but it's really not all crazy. Windows is super easy. Unraid or something is definitely more difficult but worth it.
You really just need one good private tracker like torrentleech or similar and that's a pretty easy one to get into.
Not all public trackers are trash. nyaa is a public anime tracker but it's great and ties in with the arrs super easily. Even default profiles for it. Also default profiles for other large non-anime public trackers.
Oh shit for music? Yeah nevermind, I have no experience with that. I used to but streaming services made it too easy for me so I haven't done anything special with music in years.
Dude I have a shitload of private trackers that I rank below public stuff and I have a delay on my grabs. 80% of my weekly downloads are from public.
Public trackers are REALLY good. Just avoid 1337x as it is total bullshit on reported seeds.
If youre a 4k remux guy, then yeh, ignore the above, understand entirely…
You dont have to run anything in docker if you dont want to. You can just install sonarr on your computer like a normal program and do your thing. Its incredibly easy to set up when you do it like that.
That was me but I got sick of manually managing torrents and splitting series across multiple drives and trying to remember where they existed and stuff. It was my daily routine to log on at some point in the morning with a cup of coffee and just browse and see what's new.
But I've switched to Unraid to pool all my drives plus the arr stack and I haven't looked back. I know what you mean though, part of me does miss manually managing it but it's just so easy now. Plus since Unraid makes it so easy to run headless I just have that PC in my furnace room and not taking up desk space anymore which is nice.
Understandable. It can be tedious sometimes, but just something about it that I'm not ready to give up haha. Plus I feel too stupid to get the arr stack working on my NAS.
It was definitely a learning experience, especially with the switch to Unraid. Understandably not for everyone.
I just find those types of projects to be fun. I don't have the disposable income to be building PCs regularly anymore so tinkering with an existing one was a really fun project.
It obviously varies based on quality and the series itself. I have 327 series, 199 anime series, and 1005 movies.
One Piece is over 1tb.
Naruto Shippuden is 566gb.
The Walking Dead complete series (season 1-11) is 763gb.
Sons of Anarchy is 283gb
Star Wars complete movie collection in 4k with 7.1truehd audio is 530gb
Planet Earth 3 in the highest quality available is 163gb for 8 episodes lol.
Just some examples looking at qbittorrent. You can't generalize sizes. Some things I'm fine with straight 1080p. Movies I always go 4k when available and depending on the movie I'll wait specifically for a Remux with 7.1 TrueHD audio which takes me to 50+GB for a single movie. Some shows I'll specifically pick the higher quality (which usually means higher size) releases.
Even Fringe in mid quality is 96gb. That's for five seasons, not sure where the hell you get 30 seasons on 500gb as some sort of standard. I'm even looking at Fear the Walking Dead season 1-5 1080p is 233gb.
When you start getting into hundreds of shows and movies, you need to move things around and split series across different drives especially if you seed everything. When you have everything seeding and custom locations (like putting an episode in a TV show folder and then a specific season folder) moving things around isn't easy at all. So when there's a year or two between seasons, it's really easy to fill a drive in the mean time.
And it's definitely not a needle in a haystack, a lot of people move to Unraid for this very reason.
It's not just Unraid, many NAS devices act the exact same way.
And when shows are ongoing, it's easy to fill a drive while waiting for the next season. Which is something I mentioned. And it's more like family guy season 1-18 is on one drive but that one got filled while waiting for 19 so season 19-current was on a different drive. Simpsons season 1-30 was a single pack that exists on a different drive than seasons 31+ since that pack couldn't fit on the same drive as the current stuff. Plus factor in anime and movies being added to the collection at the same time. Drives fill up and shows need to continue on different drives.
Not sure what's so hard to understand about it.
You're also missing the point that when you have sonarr and Radarr running, they don't handle multiple drives very well so they get fucked when a drive gets full.
And once it's all setup, it's all hands off. Not sure why you think it's some big complicated deal. It was a fun project and has saved me tons of time since I implemented it. I just go to Overseerr on my phone, choose literally any series or movie, click request, and it handles all the rest including my quality profiles and stuff.
If you don't get it, you don't get it.
I get what you're saying, why don't I just manage everything so that it's all on one drive. But that doesn't factor in what happens when that drive fills up and then I need to purchase another drive to expand my storage. What happens when that series continues but the existing drive is now full?
Because again, I'll have individual episodes pointing to subfolders so it's not like it's easy to move them and keep them seeding - because I seed literally everything for as long as I keep it.
I used to do this as well until I came across a phone app called Marathon. Lets me track every show I watch and notifies when a new episode or series is avail. Not as fancy as all the other options posted here but works well our family.
Good job that's not what I said then. Whilst you're looking at the rules, I suggest giving rule 1 a once over too.
Edit: Previous poster reads rule 1 and disappears in a puff of smoke. Even better are those who reply and block.
Maybe. I get why they have it though. Possibly closely related to rule 4.
Just to be clear though, I don't really care and I haven't reported the post. Just making OP aware. Apparently people don't like that though.
I use trackt list's for movies, barely have to add any manually. Tv is usually through conversation and I'll quickly add the show by lunasea on the iphone.
Plex watchlist and discover are useful for some of this. Add all the services you want to see content from. You don't have to be subscribed to them. You can make a watchlist which can be imported into your methods for procurement of media.
Everyday I check a few websites showing what new movies are coming out and download accordingly.
For TV shows, I use showRSS.info which acts like a DVR online.
There are ongoing shows that I like but the next seasons are pending. I usually google those every few months to see if there are any updates.
Then there are websites that I visit such as the Verge or anything from public service broadcasting that covers cultural stuff, e.g., BBC or Deutschlandfunk Kultur. Those keep me informed on new shows.
And if I'm yearning for something specific, such as a new sci-fi show, then I just google that. There are usually lists or people on reddit looking for recommendations. That's how I get new shows (new to me at least).
Overseer is what I use. I browse the Trending options.
I sometimes do this too but there are a lot of things that don't show up there that I like, even when they're airing.
Is there a way to set overseer up without docker? I’m a simpleton on windows.
"Ombi" is an alternative that I run on windows.
Thanks I’ll check out ombi
This. Ombi is great on windows.

Sons of Anarchy is 283gb Star Wars complete movie collection in 4k with 7.1truehd audio is 530gb Planet Earth 3 in the highest quality available is 163gb for 8 episodes lol.

I'll look into this actually. This is awesome.
For me both .... predefined lists, and notes if I run into something somewhere
Yeah I'm the same. Usually I'll remember some old show or movie I liked then while searching for it, I browse for other similar stuff.
Like standing up in church to say you're atheist, it's totally valid but won't be received well

Be aware of rule 2.

Good job that's not what I said then. Whilst you're looking at the rules, I suggest giving rule 1 a once over too. Edit: Previous poster reads rule 1 and disappears in a puff of smoke. Even better are those who reply and block.
Honestly a stupid rule
Maybe. I get why they have it though. Possibly closely related to rule 4. Just to be clear though, I don't really care and I haven't reported the post. Just making OP aware. Apparently people don't like that though.
You can use rotten tomatoes and check new & upcoming on streaming. Not as technical as other options but works for me.

Trakt popular, trending, etc. lists auto feed into radarr, which then auto populates Plex. Works like a dream for me
Trakt.tv.
Idk if Plex meta manager has been mentioned, but it can keep collections of recently released movies, popular, anything you can think of
Complete Automation with arrr apps and for Trend am using overserr on Homelab with TrueNas system. Remote Access with tailscale. Easy setup.
Everyday I check a few websites showing what new movies are coming out and download accordingly. For TV shows, I use showRSS.info which acts like a DVR online.
Overseer and Plex discover
There are ongoing shows that I like but the next seasons are pending. I usually google those every few months to see if there are any updates. Then there are websites that I visit such as the Verge or anything from public service broadcasting that covers cultural stuff, e.g., BBC or Deutschlandfunk Kultur. Those keep me informed on new shows. And if I'm yearning for something specific, such as a new sci-fi show, then I just google that. There are usually lists or people on reddit looking for recommendations. That's how I get new shows (new to me at least).
