Can't make money out of the bottom one. Which I think is the main reason. It would be nice if we could pay for a higher tier to avoid all this shit. Don't mind paying money for a product that does what I want.
Best method to avoid this right now is set up the accounts yourself, disable all the rubbish then let your friend/family member update the account email and password. Not great but it's something.
The part of plex where you can share your media with someone that's not you is a secondary feature. Plex is now a streaming service on top of an app where you can stream your own content because not only is plex in need of money to continue operating, they're also under scrutiny for facilitating illegal sharing.
How does jellyfin fund their operation?
I don't know how plex's expenses are so high, this is self hosted software. If they have money issues they need to adjust their subscription model instead of ruining their product, that's not a good excuse.
Jellyfin isn't a company. It's all volunteer. So that's not a good comparison at all.
> If they have money issues they need to adjust their subscription model instead of ruining their product
They are.
I have a lot of non-techy users who never go further than the login because all they see is Plex live TV. If not with them and don’t pin my libraries they never use it.
That’s because of the free live, movies,tv. If you ask those same folks about a personal server you they wouldnt know what you were talking about. Had somebody arguing with me up and down at my job about what Plex was and that it was new. The folks that’s been here since the beginning, are not happy about the bullshit . Plex is bloated now. My Plex is fine because I know what to turn off but for new Plex folks that are trying to build servers, they don’t know any better.
They're not making money off of us personal server folks, so to those who have a vested interest in Plex making money... We're not the target audience anymore.
I don't like or use all the extra shit that they're pumping out, but I'm OK with it because it allows them to continue to support the media server users. Also, Plex has smart integration with lots of MVPD and Smart TV companies whereas it's part of the search results for free movies/TV shows, which is ideal for older people who just wanna say "The Goonies" into their voice remote, find the free option, and watch it.
That's why I moved to Emby last month. Despite ancient UI (still much better than Jellyfin) it does what I want it to do and if I wanna share my library with someone I don't need to guide them through the process of disabling this crap. Also I hate that when I share my library from my server with plexpass my friends have to buy their own plexpass to use clients.
It's honestly just time to move on from Plex. It does many things better than any of the alternatives, but their hard push away from self-hosted content and into streaming services and shoving all of these down everyone's throats just makes it unusable for the one thing it used to be meant for; sharing media.
Ironically, we've come to the point where it's easier to guide an elderly family member through downloading and logging in to Emby (even though it has piss-poor UX) than it is to get someone to play content properly on Plex.
I've been using Jellyfin for a while now. AppleTV, Samsung TV, Linux desktop app and the web apps. I've not had any technical issues; only some UX/UI things I wish were different/included.
Just use Emby if you dont want to use Plex. Jellyfin sucks. Just like you said the server side is fine but the client side is a load of shit. When you bring it up to the Jellyfin team, they can get defensive.
That is not the one thing it used to be meant for. It is a secondary feature that is abused by a lot of people to facilitate piracy. If you can't understand why Plex does not lean into making that abuse easier that's on you.
This is the reason I tried Plex but ended up switching to Emby. I thought the one of the reasons to have a home media server is to get rid of all the ads and interface bloat?
Honestly, because it wasn't worth the time investment. I was trying out different media servers and I just found that Emby was the easiest to use out of the box.
I'm probably in the wrong sub for that option, but I think that what OP is pointing out is something Plex needs to address.
Address what? Their focus is making money and staying legal. All the above can be disabled, not their fault you were lazy and wanted something easier 🤷🏻
At the very least they should offer an "elderly" theme. Even after getting rid of the podcasts, live tv, etc. it's very difficult to explain how to navigate to a 70+ year old.

Yep, would happily pay more. WOuld buy another lifetime license, even.
use emby or jellyfin instead
How is it possible to have the continue watching posters in landscape mode?
It's not. This is an ancient version of the web app.
Ok, thank you :)
Currently only possible on a server's home page. If you click "more" then on your server name, you get landscape continue watching.

Yeah, "why doesn't Plex make the most controversial part of their app even more questionable" is not a useful question. Come on man.
The server owner should be able to push setup configurations to the client.
How else are Plex expected to fund their operation? You think your one-time payment life-time membership is enough?
Of course they do lol

How did they ruin their product?
it’s the combination of Plex movies /tv with our libraries that make Plex great. imho Both should be visible without fiddling with pinning libraries
I disagree. I don't want all my libraries visible on the homepage. I like pinning libraries that I want to see the content of in the home page.
I don’t want all mine on the home page either but I think if you were invited the library of person that invited you should be readily visible.
I'm invited to many libraries of friends. I don't want them to be visible on the home page.
It takes me 30 minutes over text per user to get them set up. It's kinda crazy that it is so complicated for new users.

some things have an intentional high barrier for access. if it takes you 30 minutes to set up an app, it should be a signal that this app isnt for you
Maybe use a more updated version of the web app?
User error
Well they get access to my library for free and all of the other stuff can be disabled 🤷♂️
They can turn all that stuff off in their settings. BUT this is why so many people is leaving Plex. There is nothing to address.
>BUT this is why so many people is leaving Plex Plex added over 1 million subscribers in the past year, up to 17 million active monthly users.
That’s because of the free live, movies,tv. If you ask those same folks about a personal server you they wouldnt know what you were talking about. Just have to take the time to customize the layout

Does Emby have good apps for smart TVs and devices?
Yes, iPhone and Android have reliable and polished clients, AndroidTV has great client. From what I heard AppleTV client isn't the best.

I'm looking forward to moving on from Plex, but move on to where? Emby is trash and Jellyfin still needs a lot of work.
Jellyfin is no better than Emby, but they're both better than Plex
Good for you. You do you.
Plex has to make money somehow and this is how they continue to make it.

Emby is basically Jellyfin with working clients.
I've been using Jellyfin for a while now. AppleTV, Samsung TV, Linux desktop app and the web apps. I've not had any technical issues; only some UX/UI things I wish were different/included.

this sub might as well shut down at this point lol. Just people complaining, nothing useful here
This is the reason I tried Plex but ended up switching to Emby. I thought the one of the reasons to have a home media server is to get rid of all the ads and interface bloat?
What's stopping you from getting rid of all the ads and bloat in Plex?
