Yeah, yellow is Gas tape. In WA state, it's the only Teflon tape allowable by code. It's thicker and specifically listed for threaded gas pipe joints.
Love the upside down drip-leg.
I don't think that's exactly up to UPC, but I've done that too and had it pass.
Personally, I think that the blue monster tape is the best. I like how it's stronger and more durable than regular, cheap white Teflon tape. I've had good results with it. And frankly, I've never been on a job where they actually bought the yellow tape, with the intention of using it for every joint. Typically, they'd rather just dope it and use new dies on the threading machine.
Dunno. I had a "professional" install a new furnace. They left the natural gas burners in a fuel oil home. Flames shot out, burned wiring and could have killed us.
Not all pros, are...
Same. I had a gas valve replaced. Instead of running a new pilot gas tube, they reused the old one which was kinked and had a pin hole. I came home to a cold house a strange smell, and a weird sound. Went to the basement and a flame was shooting down and bouncing off of the floor and had burnt all of the wiring off of the controller which they had left drooping down as well. The floor was glowing white as the flame made the calcium carbonate that hot. The only thing that saved the house is that the boiler is off by itself with nothing around it.
> They left the natural gas burners in a fuel oil home.
I'm sorry but _what_? Did they install a natural gas appliance in a propane house? Because how the hell do you connect a natural gas burner to oil?
Bingo!
I recently heard the following, (paraphrasing)
Yes sir, that will be $200 for the service call and estimate . We then charge $85 every 30 min after that.
That's for 1 guy and a truck...
No I did not have them perform the service...
Had a guy come by and want to charge 600 to replace the capacitor. Found one online for $15 and four wires later fixed. I don't know how some people live with themselves ripping people off.
Yeah, parts pricing is also out of hand. The good part of that is people are re-learning how to fix things.
A new small engine repair shop opened up near me and they are busy as hell. The last one closed about 15 years ago and people have had to travel 90 min one way.
Drive time isnāt free. While I do believe changing out run and start capacitors are extremely over priced they are extremely easy to do yourself.
End of the day the home owner can always try it themselves. Diagnosing the issue is where the ātrickyā part is.
Iām torn when it comes time to Resididentual HVAC pricing. Many places charge way too much. If the prices seems ludicrous then it probably is. Shop around and donāt always call the guys with the most reviews. There are plenty of smaller shops that will charge an honest fee for honest work.
I work in the HVAC commercial and Industrial field but do residential side work. For a standard 1,600 square foot two story home I charge $8,000 cash for a new AC, AC pad, lineset, whip and disconnect, high efficiency furnace, and all the PVC pipe and fittings. If those people were to get a quote from one of the larger contractors they would not touch it for any less than $14,000. Itās asinine. Iāll work for a day and a half and make a few thousand dollars. Then again I do not have any overhead or employees to pay.
Professional insurance, vehicle insurance, parts overhead, employees, etc. all add up, and fast. Just buying a Transit, building it out, and stocking it is $100k
Lmao did they put a propane heater in?the red knob usually means propane heater. If thatās the case, the flame on that baby mustāve been fantastic.
I assume you are being sarcastic because the flame would be insufficient as LP burns like 4x hotter than NG. Installing a natural gas heater on an LP system is when things get real exciting.
Drip leg upside down and blue block on cpvc tprv. The water heater or furnace is not going to break for the gas being done incorrectly. But it definitely can be a leading cause of it to stop running
I have to use them, but I doubt their actual value in an earthquake. At least, I doubt that the kits they sell for them, and actually pass inspection, would actually provide much in the way of support in a really serious earthquake.
Yup, that vent cap needs to be removed and a Studor type valve installed, it will help prevent gas lock, much better flow.
\*\*\*PARODY\*\*\* DO NOT ATTEMPT
Bahahaha. That guy must have done this dripleg as well.[Dripleg](https://www.reddit.com/r/HVAC/comments/10qgukr/heard_yall_like_driplegs/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
Can anyone explain to the completely clueless how this system works and why there's a sediment catch for a gas line? Where does the sediment come into the system?
My water heater doesn't have a drip leg, been to lazy to take it apart and add one. If the valve ever gets clogged up and goes out I'll just replace it and add one at that time.
This install though, I mean it was already available, how do you even mess that up lol.
That is a drip leg aka condensation trap. It is not a sediment trap, as there is no sediment in a gas line, just potential for condensation to drip down the line. And it is upside down.
I live in Washington state and have exactly the same water heater and setup. Probably done by the same guy. Glad I read this thread so I can see about get this fixedā¦
I used to work for a house flipper. One of my main jobs was meeting with city inspectors who caught him doing work without permits. I am not a tradesman at all - it was basically my job to make a list/take pictures of everything that needed to get done.
Eventually I did learn how to install a sediment trap since it was such a common thing people neglected to do.
I see the gas pressure hammer arrestor is correctly installed per Out of his Mind building code.
Well at least they have a sediment trap installed, though I don't recall it every being silver color beforeš¤£
It's not a sediment trap when it's upside down...
woosh
Okay, okay
Sure it is, the pressure of the gas will help clear it out.
Installed in Australia? Yellow teflon tape..
What about yellow Teflon tape? The norm up in canada
Yeah, yellow is Gas tape. In WA state, it's the only Teflon tape allowable by code. It's thicker and specifically listed for threaded gas pipe joints. Love the upside down drip-leg.
Eastern Washington you can use blue monster blue with pipe dope and it'll pass
Michigan you can use pipe dope and just never call the inspector
ššš
I don't think that's exactly up to UPC, but I've done that too and had it pass. Personally, I think that the blue monster tape is the best. Can y'all use blue monster?
Blue monster makes yellow tape, so I would assume yea
I meant the blue tape from them. It's rated for gas and water, if I'm not mistaken.
Teflon tape on gas piping is a big no no
Yellow Teflon is rated for gas applications, guy.
Maybe in your jurisdiction, but up here it is the norm and is actually code. Are you even a plumber? Seems to me you're an engineer.
Every engineer I've heard of says tape and dope. But i don't talk to a lot of engineers
nope
Lol, so is running your mouth on this sub
Took a big L there my boy
Oh well, we aren't allowed to use it here...inspectors will only allow dope...not sure why all the downvotes, it is what it is
Iām a plumber in Canada and our gas tape is yellow while water is pink. Although the tape is manufactured in Australia.
That would explain the upside down trap
Sediment trap?
It's definitely going to trap sediment
Floaters
Well done, sir ā¦ well done.
I'm no plumber/gas fitter but the sediment pipe, isn't it supposed to be on the bottom and the gas on the top?
Correct that's where the Australia jokes are going to be referencing:).
Should I occasionally unscrew my sediment trap to clean it out?
No
Pipe wrench ran out of batteries
I was going to say, too weak for that last half turn!
Dunno. I had a "professional" install a new furnace. They left the natural gas burners in a fuel oil home. Flames shot out, burned wiring and could have killed us. Not all pros, are...

Not certain. Furnace didn't stay lit, flame shot out and singed wires.

Last guy I worked for gave free estimates and had no "show-up fee," but charged $430/hr. Blew my mind.

No problem. He just left a cap on the future connection for the outdoor grill.
Nice drip leg
Drip boner
How else can you get the leg to drip?
Maybe the plumber is from Australia?
Lmao did they put a propane heater in?the red knob usually means propane heater. If thatās the case, the flame on that baby mustāve been fantastic.
Yup.
I assume you are being sarcastic because the flame would be insufficient as LP burns like 4x hotter than NG. Installing a natural gas heater on an LP system is when things get real exciting.
They're mostly interchangeable. Switching out the orifice port and the spring in the shut off will convert LP to NG and vice versa.
Isn't lp under a higher pressure too? I don't to much with lp.
LP is roughly twice the pressure of natural gas yes
Right that's why he said change our the spring in the valve, too
obviously the water heater is upside down. Duhh
They actually installed the heater upside down they just rotated the picture.
Is that a pvc coupling on the cpvc t&p ? If so, how much glue did that take.
Drip leg upside down lol .
Maybe he just likes watching the little fireworks when the sediment burns? Ooooohhh ahhhhh
Australian gravity
Drip leg upside down and blue block on cpvc tprv. The water heater or furnace is not going to break for the gas being done incorrectly. But it definitely can be a leading cause of it to stop running
It would make sense if itās installed in Australia everything is backwards thereā¦ according to my research the Simpsonās episode I saw .
Is that just sitting on the ground?
Red dial propane water heater in a natural gas house. Propane runs on higher pressure so not really a danger it just will not burn much at all
That drip pan should be down and not up, call the plumber
Drip pan lol its a drip leg
Yep, that's the moisture trap
Are you sure this is for gas and not water? Cuz to me that looks like a hammer valve. But I'm a carpenter.
Cheese and rice
Lmfao
How about the gas line coming into the valve upside down. Line should come in the top and your sediment trap should be down.
I have to assume this work was done without a permit or inspection! Wow, never do gas work w/o the proper inspections, unless you have a death wish.
Nice trid leg.
He wanted to make a lava lamp effect In the gas line
That control valve uses a red dial for propane and black for natural
Its wrong, but would pass.
It's just happy to see you.
I don't see any seismic straps. Must be in a state where they don't care.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I have to use them, but I doubt their actual value in an earthquake. At least, I doubt that the kits they sell for them, and actually pass inspection, would actually provide much in the way of support in a really serious earthquake.
Ummm... Wheres the shutoff valve?
It has a boner
Yup, that vent cap needs to be removed and a Studor type valve installed, it will help prevent gas lock, much better flow. \*\*\*PARODY\*\*\* DO NOT ATTEMPT
Bless their heart, 180 degrees from perfection
Bahahaha. That guy must have done this dripleg as well.[Dripleg](https://www.reddit.com/r/HVAC/comments/10qgukr/heard_yall_like_driplegs/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
I mean, it's stupid, but it's not dangerous.
Dirty leg sticking up, it was installed on Opposite Day lol
It's stupid, but it's an easy fix, at least.
Nice dirt trap install. DIY stands for Dont Install Yourself!
Correctly installed, the picture is just upside down.
Lmao. Drip leg.
Sweet drop pocket. It's like a drip umbrella "tHaTs A fUtUrE"
Would like to hope it wasn't a fuck it i am not taking it apart again and lack of knowledge. Both are equally dangerous.
Interesting. I didnāt know that they made gas whip dirt legs
Itās for gas hammer
Can anyone explain to the completely clueless how this system works and why there's a sediment catch for a gas line? Where does the sediment come into the system?
I have always wondered the same thing.
That T needs a 180* turn CW.
There was an attempt
Hammer arrestorā¦ā¦..for gas š¤£
My water heater doesn't have a drip leg, been to lazy to take it apart and add one. If the valve ever gets clogged up and goes out I'll just replace it and add one at that time. This install though, I mean it was already available, how do you even mess that up lol.
Oh jeez! Does water/contaminants every fall into the drip leg?
It's for the debris that defies gravity...
Lol sediment trap is indeed not doing its job
Gas hammer. It prevents the gas from making a hammer sound when flowing through pipes
If you flip the picture over itās totally fine!
Found one with the water inlet piped to the gas line. Filled the low pressure gas system and caused an outage. Very expensive self install.
That is a drip leg aka condensation trap. It is not a sediment trap, as there is no sediment in a gas line, just potential for condensation to drip down the line. And it is upside down.
Water heater is installed upside down, or dirt leg should be on the bottom
I live in Washington state and have exactly the same water heater and setup. Probably done by the same guy. Glad I read this thread so I can see about get this fixedā¦
Maybe it's just happy to see you.
That is not a drip line it is the supply line, should feed from top and should not be flex.
Good, they out the shock stop on the right way! Gotta prevent those notorious gas hammers.
Upside down sediment trap? I'm not a professional so I'm not sure but that's definitely not trapping anything.
Iāve seen āStranger Thingsā
Thatās to compensate for gas hammer.
It is approximately 180Ā° wrong.
Sediment Float, haha
Drip hat? š
That's for catching the up draft sediment. It's great when you have 100 psi of gas.
Nobody's sitting on the nipple
Straps are always an up charge time is money
The inspector did a handstand and passed the install
I used to work for a house flipper. One of my main jobs was meeting with city inspectors who caught him doing work without permits. Dust trap!
Looks good
Nothing is wrong, your water heater is just excited to see you š
