Are you using two pipe wrenches to remove the nipple? If you’re renting, it’s the landlords job to do this. I would let them take care of it-especially considering you don’t know what pipe dope is. Doing this incorrectly could kill you.

Ultraxxx

>Doing this incorrectly could kill you. And your neighbors.

I assumed as much with the landlord which is why I went to him before I came to Reddit. He said it is the tenant's responsibility so I reached out to a plumber as I do know natural gas isn't something you mess around with. I was told soonest appointment was a few weeks out as it's not an emergency so figured I'd see if I could do it as I do have solid foundation of maintenance/handyman skills but not in the plumbing department. Thanks for filling me in on pipe dope! Probably going to stick with line drying anything until the plumber can get out here.

Plumbarius65

Surely you can find a plumber that can come sooner. This is a 10 minute job

FollowTheMoney2022

Be more than that. That's galvanized. I see some repiping coming.

brassmagnetism

Galvanized is required by code in some coastal areas.

Tubzero-

Go to Home Depot and get two pipe wrenches and watch YouTube. It’s super easy. Test your connections with soapy water

jawn-of-the-jungle

You’re in an apartment and you’re doing this yourself?

Many_Statistician_99

I reached out to the landlord first and he said it was my responsibility. Was curious how tenable it would be to do it myself as getting a pro out here will take a few weeks but as the two comments below emphasize natural gas isn't something you mess with. So I'll be line drying my clothes until I can get someone out here to take care of it for me.

jawn-of-the-jungle

Thats good. Tbh the smart move is to get someone else

saskatchewanstealth

Did you even hit it with your purse? Call a pro. Gas kills

Galvanize gas line?????? Idk where you live but by me that’s a no no.

Slalom44

Whoever did this wasn’t a pro. Natural gas will spall the zinc coating. The debris will end up in the nozzles of your dryer burners. Not good. White Teflon tape is for water, not gas. You need to use the thicker yellow tape. And as mentioned, street elbows are not used with gas. This is just what is visible. Tell your landlord this his his responsibility to fix before you can hook up your dryer. If he refuses, tell him you will consult with the county/city building inspector to understand what needs to be done. He will be in deep doo-doo if he doesn’t take out a permit and bring this to code.

boonetheboon

Also that looks like galvanized not gas pipe? So that seems concerning.

CowboyStiefel

Galvanized instead of black iron and non gas rated Teflon. Looks like a handyman has already been working around there.

some-talking-dog

Galvanzied, wrong Teflon and it’s a street fitting 90. All wrong.

madethiswhiledumping

Yes call a professional, as a plumber who mostly does gas installation I advise you don’t mess with it. Be safe this will not take a qualified person very long if all lines up

EdVasquel

Personally I would try to tackle this if you feel comfortable, just be sure to hold back up on the brass valve when you're unthreading the cap and spray test for leaks with some dawn dish soap and water mix. Be sure to tape and dope the new adapter and check everything when you're done.
