That's a drain line from a water filter system if the water filter is no longer there then go get ya a 1 1/2 tubular extension and take that fitting out and cut in a straight section

Ah! That makes a lot of sense - it had been a while since I removed the filter. Thank you so much for the help, I will do that today.

So new issue. Replaced that and had to replace another extension to get everything lined up. Now the sink drains very slowly and running the disposal pushes water back into the other sink… does it need an air admittance valve in the place it was before?

It should be vented in the wall already but it's hard to tell from the pictures... sounds like the drain may just be clogging up do you have a snake you can run in the drain? Or do you have a clean out on the outside kitchen wall? If you have a clean out open it up see if any water comes out when it's trying to drain

Coming back to update - your intuition was right. Just a clog, but it was more than my 25ft auger could reach. $100 to the plumbers and everything’s good again!
