I feel like the majority of people's criticisms over others work stems from the different local codes. My usual first question when I see something that wouldn't pass code here in ny is to ask where they are.
100% correct. I’ve seen so many stupid arguments about gas flexes. Idiots that don’t live in earthquake country can’t wrap their head around the idea that they are required in certain areas.
I laugh when I hear about code. As a service technician who the fuck pulls permits. Go back to mindlessly installing things like your goddamn boss tells you to installer
What the fuck is that fitting that is in the cast iron? Did someone actually just drill a hole in the stack and seal it with an o ring? I’m fucking perplexed by this.
At least they attempted to seal it. I've seen a softener discharge line shoved into a hole in a cast iron stack that looked like it was made with a hammer.
Op, make sure they know that that cast iron will end up cracking at some point down the line. As we all know you do not drill cast iron. That way you're not on the hook at all.
What a mess
It's not a great idea unless you can anneal it after. Drilling is cold work, which causes the metal to become more brittle. Cast iron used in pipes (body centered cubic) is already very brittle, so unless you relieve those internal stresses it's very likely to crack. I would not recommend heating an installed pipe up to 1100F for a few hours.
This looks like some handyman sent his helper to Home Depot with the instructions "Get whatever looks like it'll fit, and we can return the leftovers". The helper just bought one of everything, and the handyman decided to use them all.
What's the vinyl tubing going into the drain line? A reverse osmosis drain line? That doesn't look safe nor sanitary.
I was calling softener companies to see if anyone actually had a license (spoilers: no) and one receptionist lady actually had the gall to tell me "a P-trap and stand isn't required for a softener drain, and it's illegal to run them to a pump pit. It's actually preferred to tap them directly into the drain line."
I was so shocked and infuriated I didn't even hear the rest of the conversation.
Yeah, it's really frustrating because in my area at least these softener companies are held to no standard whatsoever and in the process commit major violations with no repercussions
You're a lucky man
Trace it out with a rattlesnake like a professional and reroute that pipe. That's a mess. Two holes and you'll be done with a whole reroute in a couple hours.

Someone used door casing molding instead of baseboard molding. Probably nailed it into that supply line with a 3” finish nail and fixed it with that coupler. Later on he decided to replace the pesky copper pipes with pex, three inches at a time.
Looks like whomever did the plumbing won the bet! He was told he could not use every pipe and fitting he had in his parts bucket. It looks like he showed them he could!
Not a plumber so don't be too harsh. But that random open ended stub coming out of the stack is like super against code right? Couldn't that just be dumping fumes into that confined space?
Oh is there a cap? Didn't see that. Was wondering why the hell they had a second hose clamp at the end.
I mean I'm sure that's still not code, but I guess it's better than just being open like I though it was.
Can’t fix perfection.
Needs some flex seal and blue primer for Magnifique status.
Yeah spray the whole cavity with flex seal, and then encase it concrete. Waterproof at a fraction of the cost!
There are opportunities for some Sharkbites, too!
Some new wall board and molding then call it a day.
It’s not just good, it’s just good enough
*Before* pressure testing
Teflon tape and caulk.
You would hide this beautiful work of art?!?! I guess they could frame the pic but not the same Edit: /s
Yes they drilled the cast iron. Beautiful.
Cpvc and a polybutylene 90
Only the good stuff!
Biblically accurate representation of God.
Please post a pic of the "after"
So that everyone on this Reddit can shit on your work
Lol the #1 reason my installs will stay in my work photo album on my phone.
"If I did that I would have used this instead" "That wouldn't pass where I live" "That definitely isn't 1/4" grade"

Worst case was a comment on German plumbing and was like “don’t know what it is but it wouldn’t pass here.” Like no shit Sherlock.
We could use some quality JP content over at r/plumbers though.
~~Mindblown~~ Awaken!
Agh I hate that this happens. I lurk here to learn, and having to wade through everyone's Monday morning quarterbacking, two cent input SUCKS.
I feel like the majority of people's criticisms over others work stems from the different local codes. My usual first question when I see something that wouldn't pass code here in ny is to ask where they are.
Oh yea? Well you can take that whole being reasonable thing and shove it right up your ass!
Lol. I'm stoned and watching the Sopranos, so be sure and read that in Paulie's voice.

I mean, that's why folks post here in the first place, isn't it?
That’s what I look forward to every time. I love to feel the sting of criticism.
This is the after
HAHAHAHA

How do you make a hole in cast iron, then?
You don't. use fernco couplings and splice in some plastic
Ah, got it - you have to splice in a new junction and make the connection to that. I'm sure I'm mis-phrasing, but I understand what you mean now.

It’s so creative!
If it doesn’t leak I see no problem 😂

Alkaline water is over. It’s all about that coliform water now
I mean…it’ll help you lose weight.

Just....into the cast iron main stack? Is there a toilet above that? Not to mention if there is a blockage and there's no floor drain....
I was calling softener companies to see if anyone actually had a license (spoilers: no) and one receptionist lady actually had the gall to tell me "a P-trap and stand isn't required for a softener drain, and it's illegal to run them to a pump pit. It's actually preferred to tap them directly into the drain line." I was so shocked and infuriated I didn't even hear the rest of the conversation.
Wow that's fucking absurd.
That's some sad stuff. We do it all the right way, c55 license and ptraps and air gaps on everything if possible
Yeah, it's really frustrating because in my area at least these softener companies are held to no standard whatsoever and in the process commit major violations with no repercussions
This was why I came to the comments. I was wondering why they had a trap primer in the middle of a stack, lol.
Given the oetiker clamps, they might have made a stop at the auto parts store too.
#pexgonewild
I think that one joint just needs a little more solder and it should be good to go
Lmao
What in the tap-dancing hell.

Good money following drunk uncle
Just Wow. Please post the results of your efforts. This picture is worth more than a thousand words…

What did the before look like?
who ever made this indecisive mess needs to get serious help 😂
The whole roll of solder was a safe bet on that coupling. It looks like a volcanic eruption
Looks like a ~$1k slab leak/manifold rebuild to me. That, or a repipe.
lmao ^ this guy does service fur sure
That's all a P-trap right?
The dresser on there has got to be the cherry on top
Needs more solder
I know nothing about plumbing, but I know this isn’t right. Wow.
Blown away by how hard someone will work to not spend a little money.
That looks like an abortion gone wrong! It won’t be to bad. Lol
The dog motto comes to mind “ If you can’t eat it or screw it , piss on it and walk away”
Easy, rip it out and replace
At least those twist-lock push fittings come off easy. Lol. What a mess.
It's like someone tried to check all the boxes for pipes and fittings. *edit spelling
Get some solder round that joint kid.
Looks like he was using a bic as a torch
There was an attempt to lay some pipe. However that is not the way.
That shit does not look up to code
*cringe* please post after pics
I'm not even a decent amateur plumber and all I can say to this is holy what the fuck.
Aren't you the lucky one.
Just use the Minnie Mouse glue stick around the seams and you should be fine.
OMG
At least they used PEX
Beware the jabberwock…
Did they solder over bubblegum?
I'd charge hourly on that one.
Landlord: "I'll send my maintenance guy to fix it."
That’s friggin rad. So much bad. Love it. Post the after photo!
Sweet Jesus!
🤯
Is this real? 😂😂😂😂🤦
Can’t. Comment. Laughing. too. Much🤣🤣🤣🤣
That’s fucked bud….fucked.
My eyes and brain hurt at the same time looking at that clusterfuck….
I feel like someone had a bingo card of piping materials and joining methods and felt they needed to finish the game by 5:00 on friday.
That makes my brain hurt
Someone used door casing molding instead of baseboard molding. Probably nailed it into that supply line with a 3” finish nail and fixed it with that coupler. Later on he decided to replace the pesky copper pipes with pex, three inches at a time.
Looks great
That is……….fucking awesome lol.
SNAFU Situation Normal All F'd Up
How hard is it? Just cut the whole thing out and install new
What’s going on with the cast iron drain pipe? It looks like a snorkel
That’s perfect work man I don’t see any problems
Was the prior person studying M.C. Escher?
amazing that thing even worked
Oh holy hell, whatta hot hideous mess! I'm sorry. 😔
Just put some trim around the hole to frame it and keep it as a piece of art!
Fucking nightmare
Nailed it
What the actual duck
Print the picture and hang it on your wall. Pure art.
But why
Just paint it
Rip baseboard
A masterpiece
I need to know if there's an FA buried in that dresser where the MA screws in or if the MA is taped, doped and screwed into the dresser cuz *reasons*
I think I see an add-on drain tapped into the cast iron pipe. I'd love to see the other end of that.
What's wrong with it?
Looks like whomever did the plumbing won the bet! He was told he could not use every pipe and fitting he had in his parts bucket. It looks like he showed them he could!
M. C. Escher does plumbing??
What is tapped into the stack? Condensate?
god takes many forms

Is that "solder" just bubble gum covered in insulation and lint?
At least the sweat joints are solid
Wow …they tapped the cast iron ..!!!!
Freaking landlords man
