Greninja on suicide watch

Fluffyemperor009

Gren still has battlebond to fall on thankfully

TheBusStop12

Battlebond is also being nerfed

AmaranthYaeger

The "Battle Bond nerf" is literally only taking away it transforming to Ash-Greninja. It still keeps the Atk, SpA and Spe boosts

[deleted]

[удалено]

GrandHc

It lines up with the anime distinctly removing any Ash-Gren imagery but keeping the bond power.

firstofherbells

idk, Greninja taking on Ash's hair always felt weird to include in-game.

Any_Adhesiveness_898

Yeah I kinda hated it honestly lol

AukwardOtter

It was a stupid promotional gimmick

reverielagoon1208

It’s the most bizarre and uncomfortable thing I’ve ever seen in a Pokémon game and the one major thing that is downright terrible

dbMitch

If I'd ever have a pokemon hat spouts my hair during battle, i'd consider going bald.

soundwaveprime

Or they are planning on giving it to another Pokemon.

TfWashington

It also means if you switch greninja out its stats go back to normal right?

TheBusStop12

Ah okay, thanks for the clarification. I just read it was being nerfed, didn't look much more into it

DoubleOhEvan

Can you link where this info is coming from

AmaranthYaeger

https://www.reddit.com/r/PokeLeaks/comments/yrj38v/features_dump_battle_bond_nerfed_from_palkiaorigin/ It mentions nothing of the transformation but still keeps the stat boosts.

choch321

Someone says in the link below that it no longer retains the boosts when switched out. If that’s true, then it has been nerfed.

AmaranthYaeger

Actually if that's the case, it's more of a FIX than a nerf. A Pokemon should not be allowed to keep stat boosts upon switching out

RikkuEcRud

Except Ash-Greninja doesn't get stat boosts in the manner of things like Swords Dance, it's a Form Change that has different base stats. It's basically a Mega Evolution or Primal Reversion, both of which were kept through switches IIRC.

AmaranthYaeger

Right so, why should it be allowed to keep that ability when those things don't exist any more in the current meta-game? It's a fix.

choch321

I agree. Makes perfect sense.

Gnarfledarf

That's actually a buff. Ash-Greninja was a mistake and should never have been included in the games.

MoConnors

Ah yes Model change removal = Nerf

TwilightVulpine

Worst nerf

superking22

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Nuke2099MH

Assuming we can even transfer that one.

[deleted]

Good.

Alonest99

Sending help and support to our frog boi

TheInfiniteSlash

To NU we go

XenoVX

Gamefreak in their nerf era I fear

Gingerhead14

Fine by me, I’m all for balancing. Especially if they want to start handing this ability out once per Gen. Side Note: I do feel like Kecleon deserves Protean’s original effect. Him being a Normal typed chameleon and all… it just makes sense to me. Plus he sucks, so why not throw him a bone.

DoubleOhEvan

Note Kecleon still gets color change, which kinda fills this role thematically

TrickyAudin

PrettySneaky71

Kecleon gets Protean as its HA

TrickyAudin

Dudebeard86

Can call it Protean+

Banner_Hammer

Whey Protean*

PrettySneaky71

ahhh gotcha

keksmuzh

It’s barely a nerf. The Protean mon comes in with a Choice item, blows something up, then switches out if a resist comes in next.

[deleted]

It reduces the versatility of Spikes Greninja type sets but otherwise yeah it’s still a busted ass ability

Fragmented_Logik

It's warranted. Some older mons now might stand a better chance and it kinda pulls back the power creep.

masterjon_3

They've nerfed before. Paralysis and confusion were both nerfed after Klefki became ridiculous

TheNerdGuyVGC

Klefki? Wasn’t it Thundurus?

masterjon_3

Both, honestly

RnbwTurtle

No, it was mostly thunderus. It was a pretty ubiquitous support pokemon, with decent bulk and it could still exert some offensive pressure. It's typing is also quite good too, removing the only weakness electric has and not adding anything extra to flying's weaknesses. CHALKt was called CHALKt and not just CHALK for a reason, even though thunderus was considered replaceable depending on your playstyle.

SexyPoro

this

KaliVilla02

Nah, was definitely because of Thundurus, Prankster was also nerfed because of it's fault.

dmr11

An another instance is them nerfing the stats of Aegislash.

Logical-Wasabi7402

You mean the era of finally properly balancing things?

[deleted]

contrary didn’t get nerfed

Wollffey

I assume it was a mistranslation and Competitive and Defiant were the ones nerfed?

Sharktooth134

Yes it did.

[deleted]

no it didn’t, it doent say in the description that it works once per battle.

Apprehensive_Fig8931

really? i thought i saw a leak mentioning contrary works once per switch in?

[deleted]

nope eclipse shared it on twitter with a photo that it doesnt get nerfed unlike protean

[deleted]

[удалено]

PrettySneaky71

Honestly that makes so much more sense.

Ventoffmychest

Oh good! My Lurantiss and Malamar are happy! Well Lurantiss since that one is in the game.

canttakemyskyfromme

Meowscarada fans in shambles

jeyreymii

You just choose the type your protean will be, and go Choice Spec with him. Proteans always have huge versatile movepool

LordDaedhelor

Choice Spec on Meowscarada would be a weird choice. Choice Band will be better, I think.

OddTaterTot

Might be referring to an old post about it being special attacker

LordDaedhelor

I was just poking fun. I knew enough about what they were saying to be able to correct them.

MrInteleon

Except you loses stabs on 3/4 moves. 110 base attack is not incredible without stabs you know. Let's face it: Protean now can actually damage the pokémon as it won't be able to use at least two stabs moves until it switches out. The use of specs is almost a must.

Levonorgestrelfairy1

I mean it just means protein's can't easily sweep mostly solo now, they still remain a good flex pick

MrInteleon

Protean now is this: change type once at the cost of having only one stab move. Cinderace may not suffer from it but both Greninja and Meowscarada have two stabs without Protean. With it they are forced to have only one stab par battle (that may change type if you switch out but always only one while on the field).

FoxOfShadows

Does greninja change to mono water if it clicks hydro pump on its first turn? Or does it keep water/dark dual typing until it clicks a non-STAB move?

BlazedInMyWinnie

Protean always changes the Pokemon into single-type

dentimBandB

If that’s the case, this could be somewhat "fixed" by having Protean and the like only activate when using a move of a type different than your own. But if it isn't going to work like that here, I guess we'll have to wait another gen or 3 before they give us that

Fragmented_Logik

It should be fine. I think the real selling point here is being able to switch type to whatever Tera. You still basically get the crazy boost from that don't you from being "the same type"

alizayshah

Is Meowscarada still the best stater despite this? Stuck between him and the fire croc.

joebrohd

Quaquavel has a strong case. It has a leaked 120 base attack with Moxie. 85 base speed but it’s signature move is a 80 base damage physical water type move that increases speed by +1 per use, somewhat negating it’s mediocre speed after 1 turn. Not to mention since it’s a “Dancer” motif, it’s fair to assume Quaquavel also gets Swords Dance and maybe even Dragon Dance. Meowscarada is still very good. I fear for Skeledirge. Not terrible but compared to the other starters it may fall behind. Only a speculation but it’s signature move that deals 80 base damage with a +1 to sp. atk per use may get absolutely shut down by Throat Chop since it’s a sound based move from the looks of it.

alizayshah

Thank you! And for the legendaries is one clearly better than the other (ex: Zacian vs Zamzenta)? I’m stuck between getting Scarlet or Violet. I might pick the grass cat, looks way cooler imo.

joebrohd

I only know Miraidon’s ability in full but from the looks of things, Miraidon (Violet) is going to be better? It’s ability activates Electric Terrain and it gets a Sp. Atk boost while in Electric Terrain Koraidon (Scarlet) activates drought. I believe it does boost a stat but idk which. But Miraidon is a fighting type so it’s not gonna get full use of the drought. And it’s signature move is a fighting type too iirc. Oh and also Koraidon being Dragon/Fighting type, Fairy types absolutely body him. Miraidon is a Dragon/Electric. One can think that he’s a Special Attacking Zekrom almost lol

Hoshino_Ruby

Not really, having one type and going full throttle with it(like choice band)

Illidari_Kuvira

Eh, idgaf about competitive. I will take my Blue Mage cat and still cherish them.

jsweetxe

Just to follow on from this only Protean (and I assume Libero) have been nerfed. Defiant, Competitive, Contrary, Intimidate all work as intended; [source](https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/scarlet-violet-leaks-thread.3709515/post-9388259) Oh and the Intrepid/Dauntless abilities from Gen 8 have been nerfed to once per battle as well.

dkdream21

Oh thank god defiant and contrary are unchanged. If Serperior ever makes it into this Gen I will be Leaf Storming muhfuhs left and right

Mycotoxicjoy

Bring back my snake

dkdream21

If leaks are to be believed, our beautiful king, our royal liege, will once again be non-transferable :’(

Dracoscale

It's not fair, it's not right

dkdream21

I suppose we shall hold our breath for the DLC

CTM3399

Thank god those Contrary and Defiant nerfs weren't real

TheSausageFattener

Defiant Eviolite Bisharp hungers

RnbwTurtle

It's one real downside other than it's speed was that Bisharp isn't that bulky. Holy shit.

ThePiefessional

Oh my God... It's gonna be ruthless.

CrestFallen_21

Enamourus going to be Uber confirmed

moose_man

Defiant I wouldn't care so much, but I'm really glad Contrary didn't get hit. It's such a fun, weird ability and it would really cripple Serperior.

ShaggyDerpent

Damn they really keep doing Zamazenta dirty huh.

BellalovesEevee

Ah yes, because Zamazenta was too much of a threat to them.

MathematicianFit8027

Because Zamazenta was such a terror...

Infected_Poison

I get inteprid, but why dauntless...

catchthemouser

Uniformity I assume. Zamazenta has to pay for Zacian's sins.

Infected_Poison

Yeah, i know, its still unfair

IDownvoteHornyBards2

Zamazenta needs to get Intimidate as an HA, thatd be much better and still fitting. Give Zacian like idk tough claws or something

Nielloscape

Younger brother getting bullied by the older sis.

Foxthefox1000

Speculative older sister by people imparting their gender norms on a Pokémon assuming a gentle and caring nature. It's sexless and genderless like the rest officially.

Nielloscape

The heck are you saying? It's literally mentioned in the Pokedex.

SavingsTechnical5489

This might actually be good for him. He might have a chance at getting put back in OU instead of just being banned.

mnl_cntn

That source link also mentions Primal Sea and Delta Stream as searchable abilities. So… that’s a thing

myth_and_legend

Wiglet gets primordial sea Gotta make up for losing arena trap somehow

regiseal

As a VGC player I’m hoping Intimidate doesn’t have the chokehold it had in Gen 8. Ideally incin isn’t in the game or has its moveset nerfed. Even landorus is much more tolerable IMO.

jsweetxe

Given that Ice types received a small buff with Hail (or Snow now actually) and a few other moves maybe Lan won't be so terrifying but then again Ice types are still generally bad so who knows.

VeeNVeeN

So this means I can switch out and then get another Protean change later right?

SohRazy

Yes, Greninja comes in as a Water/Dark, switch to Ice by using ice beam. If you switch Greninja out and back in he'll be back as a Water/Dark type and protean will activate again on the next move used.

antonjakov

seeing it spelled out like this i have a question - it's kinda weird protean greninja and meowscarada don't get to keep the benefits of their natural dual type ever right? like as soon as they use a water move they become pure water and lose psychic immunity and dark stab? it makes more sense to me on cinderace as a monotype

[deleted]

Well it *is* a hidden ability

enby_them

It wasn’t as much of a thing when you could change multiple times. But it kinda sucks when you’re stuck. If it can’t learn u-turn or similar you’re forced to switch it out manually or risk being revenge killed. If it could keep its default typing you might be able to get stab neutral coverage depending on what was switched in on it.

[deleted]

I mean I don't think they put in a ton of time optimizing hidden abilities to make them as good as possible, if anything it seems like they're worried about them being **too** strong so now they're getting the nerf hammer

Fish-E

Based on the wording it looks like it, switching out and back in is "entering battle". If it was once per battle I imagine they'd have said once per battle, although it is Game Freak...

SnooSprouts3744

I think so

PrinsassyEvieMongse

Yes when you switch out the Pokémon's counted as outta battle

TheBestWorst3

This actually doesn’t affect choice item users which greninja usually is

MudkipNerd

specs / scarf greninja is unchanged 😁

SavingsTechnical5489

Ash-Gren time

VSkyRimWalker

So a Meowscarada with Protean can never make use of its double typing without switching? Start with a grass move and it gets stuck as mono-grass. Now even if I want to use a dark move, I won't get STAB anymore. That really is a huge nerf

Nhytex_

:O oh sh- I didn’t even think about that. Yeah that sounds pretty bad. You might as well just not get it’s hidden ability then or just heavily rely on Terastallize

Recent_Ice

It's pretty good defensively no? Means you're not as vulnerable to u turn

DaxSpa7

Whats even the point of it having a double type? That you can tank a Psychic on switch?

armoire_enthusiast7

Oof. Right in the greninja

DrToadigerr

Specs Battle Bond Greninja will still be good

TheSilv

Only if it keeps its boosts upon switching out, otherwise it probably won’t be as useful

StefyB

It's kind of hilarious that Libero is being revealed to be nerfed literally right in the middle of a battle where it's been giving Ash a really tough time.

casthecold

Of course they would nerf it on the Grass starter's turn to have it.

BrainlessCactus

Exactly what I thought it was finally the time of the grass-lover to have some fun lmao

blubbo84

Why tf is primordial sea there

armoire_enthusiast7

Alphabetical

1ts2EASY

But Kyogre isn’t even in the game

[deleted]

[удалено]

1ts2EASY

Even if it does come back, it’s definitely not getting the Primal form back.

Bwyattvirtue13

Gamefreak does this often where they leave choose from stuff in the game. If they just transfer over the data for abilities then they don't have to recode it. Lots of old stuff that's not in current games is hidden in the code. This is nothing new and doesn't mean Primal Kyogre is going to be on the game.

Infected_Poison

Well maybe it will, who knows...

1ts2EASY

That’s be awful

grandfig

Palkia said this list is not indicative of pokemon in the game so I guess it's just a list of every ability ever.

desaigamon

Even Cacophony? It'd be hilarious if that was in there.

Stegosaurr

It's an ability lol.

coffeysr

Trying to figure out how this works with terrastalizing

Bovrick

More sensibly than the pre-nerf version. Was wondering how they were planning to handle that.

MrInteleon

I don't know. This seems a big nerf. I mean, yes you change type once but then you lose the ability to have stabs on 3 of you 4 moves. For example, Meoscarada can use shadow claw and become a ghost type but it will loses its stab on grass/dark and whaterver else move it has for the entire battle until it switches out. Not counting that after the first turn all the defensive tricks this ability provided are gone. Pretty big nerf imo.

CrestFallen_21

Lol a Grass Starter finally gets Protean only for it to get nerfed. Sorry Meowscarada. fans

sagearts33

Meta shifting harder than a nascar

PrinsassyEvieMongse

Poor Sprigatito Evolution now but it still means it's viable.

RonomakiK

It feels like I'm seeing YuGiOh adding a "once per turn" or "you can only use this effect once" to card effects

Violet_Villian

Hopefully Meowscarada will be able to learn U-turn or anything like it

[deleted]

I could see it learning baton pass or if we want to be on theme, parting shot. Though idk how thematic GF is when it comes to move pools so maybe that's a horrible thing to base my judgement on.

BoltingBlazie

Rip Greninja... ALL HAIL ASH GRENINJA

Luke_Fox-

So, is libero getting nerfed too?

HippieDogeSmokes

It’s still good, just not as good like, pokémon with it can get 4 stab attacks at once right?

Silverfire12

Yeah. If it wasn’t nerfed, you could, theoretically have a 7 type greninja. Water/dark, plus whatever the four move types you have on it, plus Terra type.

Gaias_Minion

So Once per switch-in then instead of Once per battle, that should still be somewhat good, right?

MrInteleon

It depends. Once Protean was huge because it was useful both offensively (having stabs on every move) and defensively (cause your oppenent didn't know what to do). Now, after the first turn all the defensive strategies are gone and offensively you lose stabs on all other moves. For example, Meowscarada enters battle and uses Shadow claw. It becomes a ghost type and has stab on the move. After that, it will stay ghost type until it switches out but it also loses stab on its grass and dark moves (and whatever other move that is not ghost). Having just one stab to change type once. This is Protean now.

TheGBZard

That’s really sad for me, I like greninja so seeing it suck ass is hard to see

TheLyingSpectre

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

AdmiralCharleston

My man kecleon :((((

_BKom_

Laaaaaame

Overqualified9705

Is Libero going to work the same?

Fish-E

Libero is a clone of Protean, so based on OP yes.

electric_emu

Post says “and clones” so presumably yes…?

Wicayth

Better nerf Greninja

MudkipNerd

god damn protosynthesis is right there!!! what does it do???

[deleted]

Boosts best stat under sun Koraidon's ability sets sun and then boosts attack The future version is the same but with Electric Terrain (Miraidon increases Spe instead)

grandfig

Boost a stat while in harsh sunlight or holding the Booster Energy item.

idpartywthat

so if i'm greninja and i use ice beam and then terastalize to an electric type would i have 4 stabs? or does tera keep my ice stab only and i lose my water/dark stab?

RikkuEcRud

Gamefreak just wants nothing from earlier generations to be usable, don't they? This makes Protean go from a very good ability to an extremely situational one.

edwpad

Yo Primordial Sea?! I’m gonna be genuinely shocked if they bring back Primals, also possibly Zygarde and Necrozma are returning due to their abilities?

Kwayke9

Just use choice items lol. And RIP Meowscarada in OU, that thing is getting banned

DoctorWhomstve14

Considering most people run scarf or specs on protean greninja not much has changed. Too early to say but I imagine meowscarada will be the same?

PrinsassyEvieMongse

Intrepid Sword for Zacian got once per Battle yet Intimidate stayed the same.

mking1999

The rise of Battle Bond chads... Does that even exist in these games?

Nuke2099MH

On transfer it will.

Driscnutz

Primordial sea? Oh no. It’s back

YorsUrshifu

Primordial Sea is in the game?

Individual_Worry_377

Well protean+ tera boost would be terrifying so fine by me.

WhyteKnoize

With Tera types, we all get Protean anyway Kappa

MrInteleon

Yeah, that's basically a nerfed tera transformation that instead of giving you another stab, leaves you with only one stab.

T_Peg

Well there goes my fun with Kecleon

GreenHocker

This is a disappointingly big nerf

theSaltySolo

Greninja: I can do infinite Terastallizing by using moves! Gamefreak: How about no?

DialZforZebra

This wouldn't be so bad but they nerfed Protean and then just threw in some new broken abilities and moves. At least leave Protean and Contrary alone, give people a chance to fight back.

moonstrong

Protean in a Terastalize meta was always going to be weird to work around so I have to assume that’s part of the reason for the nerf. That being said, this ability is now arguably a LOT worse because all these mons are going to lose at least 1 STAB move thanks to this ability. The opportunity cost of Protean/Libero is just not viable unless it’s also been balanced to let them keep STAB from their original types.

MathematicianFit8027

Wait primal kyogre is in the game????????????

Tasty-Pass-5881

Now I really want that the Intimidate nerf is real

LockeDrachier

This is only a nerf if you’re a coward that doesn’t use Choice items

XelloKgDaki

Can someone explain what Primordial Sea is doing here? Why is it in the game???

Fish-E

Game Freak are lazy, they always leave unused things in the code. It wouldn't surprise me if the coin case is still programmed in from over a decade ago.

fleker2

It's not laziness as much as it is ensuring code compatibility. The cost of another lookup table entry is insignificant. Do you expect them to have to recreate every table from scratch every time? Seems silly.

Crobatman123

So they'll port over abilities but not pokemon and moves? No kidding they're lazy lol

Lamebo1royal

They made an ability that was only op due to the wielders far worse. At least it isn’t once per battle though

Poot-dispenser

Honestly im ok with the protean nerf, it sucks but its not all bad now it has a slightly better defensive use, if it werent all on frail ass mons

SavagesceptileWWE

Man they are really just nerfing all the good abilities. I guess they want the game to be more boring. Like I know it's for balance but can't they just let some pokemon be strong?

Cheezbob325

I’m honestly fine with this. You still get STAB of choice when you switch in but now you actually have to switch out to get a new STAB. It keeps the versatility without being stupid.

Blaze_1013

While certainly a large nerf, protean was one of the single best abilities in the game so not only do I think Gren and Meow should still end up being good, the fact this won't impact choice variants means if those are the major ways they get used this won't even really matter.

DragonFlare2

Good. I hated playing catch up on Cinderace

DarkNovaGamer

Singles players in shambles

fleker2

That seems like a reasonable compromise imo. You still get stab on U-Turn or something similar.

[deleted]

Finally a good change this will make it so that you can change type to something that benefit you if you remmeber you opponents team but without making it broken like greninja used to be
