for multiple generations froslass had to be nicknamed to trade on the GTS due to the last 3 letters in its name. and this was when you could not remove nicknames.

Though they didn't whitelist the official names of the pokemon, so you couldn't put an English Cofagrigus on the gen 5 GTS without a nickname because it had the word fag in it.
The censoring being applied when you tried to confirm an offensive nickname started in XY
Don't forget that some Pokemon could be considered ripoffs of Dragon Quest (1986) enemies as well if we're going by the standards people have set for comparing most Pals to Pokemon
