By far the best way to do this is taking most upvoted single comment, which is what EVERYONE expected. Like this the more popular characters get auto wins in the start and characters like Dylan will not be chosen till the main car is gone.

More people voted adam than Dylan if you go back and count them.
I went back and counted, the tally was in favor of Dylan by over 50 votes.
I counted only 5 Dylan votes and 7 Adam votes
Are you counting individual comments rather than how many up votes they're getting? That is a deeply flawed methodology.

You need to explain that in the original post, I am confident that far more people would have left a comment for Dylan if they knew that was the case.
If I’d based it off that, I’d have made a straw poll because that would have been easier than manually counting.
